On the subject of Mamoru Hosoda films, what are your thoughts on Mirai and Belle?
I haven't seen Mirai, so I can't comment on that, but I was cautiously optimistic for Belle and picked up the Blu-ray... and was pretty disappointed.
The music and art are beautiful; I listen to the songs on repeat all the time. It's got a stellar English dub full of passionate performances, and while I like when dub actors sound different from the original, there's also something incredibly impressive about how closely Kylie McNeil's Belle matches Kaho Nakamura's. MrPloXx has some mashups on YouTube that just blow me away.
But the story...
I think my main complaint would be that I was simply not captured by the Beauty and the Beast aspect of the plot—which is sad, because that was definitely one of the draws of Belle for me. The relationship felt nonsensical, and while I do think that was partly the point, considering a certain parallel between the beginning of the story and the end, there wasn't enough exploration about why Suzu was so drawn to this guy for it to really work for me.
Plus, the Beauty and the Beast elements took away from this story of Suzu suddenly finding herself an Internet star, when I don't think it really had to? Both Belle and The Beast are online celebrities, though obviously in different ways, and actually delving into that would have been interesting! It would have vastly improved their scenes together for me, and it would have tied the story threads together nicely.
I wouldn't say that Belle has the uncomfortable messaging about two worlds that Wolf Children and The Boy and the Beast do, but the way it handles a particular issue in the end also doesn't bode super well with me, so it could be read as offensive in other ways.
Ultimately, Belle solidified to me that I love the concepts of Mamoru Hosoda's films, but the execution just never really hits the right spot.
But, then again, I've only seen The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Wolf Children, The Boy and the Beast, and Belle, so I'm absolutely limited in what I know. Still, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is the only Mamoru Hosoda-directed film that I didn't have huge issues with... and it's also the only one where he doesn't have writing credits. I sadly think I simply don't jive with his writing very much.
It's too bad, though! I really wanted to love Belle. I love relationships between humans and "monsters," I love secret identity shenanigans, I love deep dives into social media and fame; it was totally up my alley but didn't deliver on any of these concepts in ways that I found especially satisfying.
The music is still amazing, though!

I wish we had more female characters like Eleanor Shellstrop. One of the most unlikable people you've ever met. Read a Buzzfeed article on most rude things you can do on a daily basis and decided to use that as a list of goals. Makes everyone's day worse just by being there. Dropped a margarita mix on the ground and tried to pick it up, only to get hit by a row of shopping carts which pushed her into the road where she was hit by a boner pill delivery truck, killing her instantly. Cannot keep a romantic partner despite being bisexual. Had a terrible childhood but will die before she gets therapy. Best employee at a scam company. Just the worst but also can't help but root for her to improve.
Absolute loser. Girl-failure. Bad at almost everything. Literally perfect female character.

matt ruling that the technical damage from the explosion was irrelevant due to the power and weight of fcg’s sacrifice is what really got me. even if sam rolled the max possible number on the dice, it wouldn’t have even brought otohan to below where she was before she took the health potion. mechanically speaking, she should have survived that blast by a LOT of hit points. but this was a player willingly killing their own character, beyond reviving and even potentially beyond resurrection, to give the rest of the party any advantage they could, and he rewarded that with the death of an antagonist that has haunted this campaign from the very beginning. unreal fucking plays by both matt and sam tonight.

I know there’s been a few posts on it already, but godsdamn Travis was clutch in last night’s game
Not Chetney. Chetney didn’t do shit. (jk)
But Travis Willingham. the player. the CEO. the fan.
He got his shit absolutely ganked in round 1. Fully dead. Before he got a turn. I’ve seen players rage quit after that. Hell, i’ve been a player that rage quit after that.
And he hung around, making jokes and talking strategy until he was like “ooh, a burger” and got his noms on until he was brought back up
When a TPK looked imminent, he told Matt it was okay. He knew they could move on, even from that. He was a calm and comforting presence at the table.
when Sam pulled the hail mary, he was the only one not yelling, crying, or both. He, in the moment, let his appreciation for the big move and the killer story beat shine through.
Travis did a hellova job last night, and it was easy to see why he captains the ship, and he’s someone i strive to be like as a player, a gm, and a friend
