A few days ago, my beloved godmother passed away. She helped to raise me, guide me, and fill my life with blessings, and the shock of losing her has been painful and difficult to navigate. Though, incorporating her into my Quietus Altar and Ancestral Work has been helpful in allowing me to mourn her and say goodbye, without feeling like I'm truly losing her.

Today, as I thought about my godmother and pondered the nature of loss, I worked to let myself hurt without holding onto the pain. As I reminisced and allowed the feelings to move through me, I was a bit surprised to see a deer and her young buck coming directly up to me. I recognize them both, as she has been mothering fawns in the woods behind our home for years, and while she's rather friendly for a wild deer, she has never let herself or her young ones get too close to people. I got part of a sqash from our garden, left over from cooking, and tossed a few slices of it to them. They ate happily, and before I knew it, the mother was eating right out of my hand. I don't know what moved me to it, but I reached out to her and was shocked to find that she allowed me to pat and stroke her head and neck for a long while, though she'd never even let me get close to her before this.

Being approached in this way by a mother doe while in the throes of grieving a mother-figure was such a lovely and comforting surprise.

One of the things that makes the Samhain candles feel special to me is the herbs I include. Some are here because they’re autumnal and they evoke this season. Some were chosen because of their connection to Celtic faery and Samhain lore. Some because they hold certain divination properties. I grow my own rustic tobacco and I make the mead that I use in the herb blend. The coffee is here because my Nanny Carlton loved coffee and it’s my daily offering to her. (tw pet death) hello i know some people might think this is silly but. my dog recently died and i set up an ancestor (?) altar for him. i've been burning incense at it and he's all over the house, we hear him trot around and he gets in the bed with me sometimes.

my question is, i'm unsure what to leave him as offerings. toys would pile up quick, (tho i have left a few) and he didnt really have a favorite treat other than human food scraps. i've never offered perishables to a spirit or deity and i kind of. dont know what to do with them after? and i obviously cant give him alcohol. just water feel a little lackluster, he was my best friend. i see you talk about ancestor work a lot and i know this is a weird case but if you have any advice i'd appreciate it

I would probably categorize that as a shrine to the Beloved Dead instead of Ancestors but it mostly amounts to the same thing, just slightly different terminology. But it's a good idea! I had a rabbit who died almost two years ago, and she's still around sometimes, too.

For perishable offerings, I usually leave them out for an hour or two, or sometimes for a day or so, and then throw them away or pour them down the sink afterwards. I'm sure your dog would still love human food scraps! And perhaps things like chicken bones, since there's no choking hazards for a spirit dog.

For my bunny, I usually put her treats outside since she's buried in the yard, but on a shrine would be just fine too.

But also - fresh water isn't lackluster. Those of us who've spent our whole lives getting drinkable water directly from a tap in our house can take it for granted, but fresh (and cold!) water is sometimes a Very Appreciated offering.

Beloved Beyond Time

A DeadSerious Prompt where a young Damian follows his mother's advice about finding his future 'Beloved' and is smitten with a TimeTraveling Ghost King (Prince) Danny when his grandfather summoned the eldritch being.

Damian, despite being young, will want no other to be by his side once he takes over the League. Especially since the King was able to strike fear in his grandfather for even just for a moment.

Danny, whose just started taking up his soon to be Kingly title and duties, at first freaked out when a kid who just got out of toddlerhood is offering marriage. Who wouldn't. And well while he didn't fully encourage it, he found it a little adorable and tried to nudge the kid away from said... err crush feelings?

He was a little sad to have to say goodbye to the kid when his month long stay with the al Ghul's (mostly to see if they're worthy to keep the Pits) he was pretty for sure he'd never run into the kid again and if he did who knows how old they'd actually be because again.. time travel.

So Danny now at the age of 16 really wasn't expecting to be basically be cornered on his first day at his new school at Gotham Academy by a 17 year old Damian Wayne who is leaning over him and says "Hello Beloved. Time has been kind to you it seems."

Danny's poor half-alive heart is currently dying from being cornered by an older Damian.

i keep thinking about digital ghosts. or maybe digital hauntings would be a better term. the final messages shared between you and someone you no longer speak to, for whatever reason. a webpage, or blog post, or inactive profile on a social media forum that you still return to sometimes, no longer even hoping for something to have changed, just to remember, like returning to a grave year after year. video and audio recordings of people who've left your life that you play back over and over until the tape wears out. in the realm of the more fantastical, maybe a hologram that bears their likeness but only a pale, shallow imitation of their complexity, their personality, or an AI or other imperfect replica built on a lifetime of data collected from them that only reinforces their absence but is all you have left to remember (or replace until you forget the difference) them by. all these records that they existed that will inevitably only last as long as the technology that supports them takes to become obsolete, or the data corrupts and begins to break down, or the archives storing it are no longer hosted anywhere. you haven't cheated death, or the grief that comes with losing someone. you've just prolonged it.

Burrows End is SO SO good and Aabria is such a master of story telling. This season, despite being genuine DnD vs other systems Aabria has used, hasn't actually seen all that much full blown combat. Like, of course they've fought things throughout, but it's been so much more information hunting and puzzling together all the lore. But this obviously means those scenes we do have such full blown COMBAT with sets so much more important, which was obvious in the reactor....but the bear....so obviously it's been focused on in reference to Tula's reveal, or as a show of how fucked up biology wise this world they live in is and how dangerous it is in the forest.

But it's also Aabria laying such incredibly subtle groundwork. It's showing us "this is possible in this world. This happens. They can get inside of you, burrow into you, and you will be their walking warren. Parasite and host intertwined."

And then we move on...we focus on the secrets of the first stoats and learning of all these human things, and the chipmunks and bear are just fun tidbits to throwback to about how scary and fucked up things are, but no longer relevant.

Last week we heard those tapes, and I thought "that voice change there...the 'they're so sneaky'...was that a first stoat, who we only heard as squeaks, instead speaking through Dr. Wenabocker as he died?"

And I forgot about the bear too.

But the SECOND it was revealed that Wenabocker left, that his body was gone and that Phoebe left too? It all clicked.

The Bear wasn't just a fun, really cool fucked up battle set for an episode, it was incredibly important foreshadowing. The foundation, the trap, the big bad all at once hidden behind a cool, fucked up bear in the second goddamn episode of the season.
