maddox doesn't speak to ashlyn at all, even following to the next day. if they do have to communicate, maddox does it through sharp, irritated gestures and scowls. ashlyn's heart aches whenever she sees her, imagines tiny maddox and even tinier jet, scrounging to survive... she's always had an overwhelmingly vivid imagination, so she can see it, see maddox trying to get enough food for her little brother, probably forgoing her own needs in favour of making sure her little brother would like. it hurts and she wants to reach out, wants to say something, but maddox takes any and every excuse not to talk to her.

ashlyn thinks they'll have to talk to get on the horse, right? wrong, maddox gets up—ashlyn holds her hands up again, but feels almost disappointed when maddox doesn't slip. then, she flushes red. it was bad enough the other day, now you want it?

they set off again, and while she's tempted to put her arms around her waist again, she's sure maddox would personally stop the horse and kill her herself. so she holds back, although as they get faster at some points, she can't help herself. she lets go immediately every time.

finally, finally, they reach the northern heights' base. it's a pretty small abandoned village, but they've set up camps in a few areas. they tie the horses to the bars on the window to the house they're closest to.

as ben mazzara shares the jobs and what they'll be doing, the rest of them peek around the corner.

right in their line of sight, in one of the little camps they've set up, are the captives, and ashlyn gasps, and she feels maddox tense beside her.

from this distance, it's impossible to tell fully, but jet seems to have a black eye. val, tied to him, is holding her head up but doesn't seem to be much more aware of her surroundings. ricky, however, is slumped over and unconscious, and has a cut on his forehead. they're surrounded by some of the northern heights—lily and a big burly boy. even as they watch, lily's talking to jet, and maddox tenses even more, somehow.

then lily straightens and nods at the guy next to her, who slaps jet.

ashlyn barely manages to put her shock aside in time to grab maddox and yank her back before she does something she'll regret.

"we can't—" ashlyn whispers to her.

"i'll fucking kill them, i'll kill them all—" maddox kicks away but EJ, mazzara and carlos all grab her too, and bring her back. "we have to—"

"we will get them back." miss jenn tells her, eyes sharp. "but we need to wait until the big guard boy is alone. the more people there are, the more likely they are to be used like carlos was."

carlos flinches, and it's clearly the memory of madison which makes maddox clench her teeth but stop struggling.

maddie wanted to charge in right there and then. she wanted to shoot down every fucking stupid northern light in sight before getting her friends back. she didn't care. but minutes of waiting became an hour, which then became hours and hours. they camped out in one of the furthest huts, where no one seemed to be coming that close to at all. everyone took turns to lookout for when the guard would change or be left alone, but it seemed like it would never happen.

maddox said there was always the option of attacking at night, but ej reminded her that if they couldn't see the rest of the northern lights, they could all be waiting and surround them right there and then. she hated it. she just wanted her brother back, why was that too much to ask for?

at first, ej and carlos watched over, while nini was busy with the horses, making sure they wouldn't make any noises that could bring extra attention to what there already was. mazzara and jenn slept, which left ashlyn and maddie. ash wanted to say something, anything during the whole of ej and carlos' day shift, but from the way that maddie kept loading and unloading her gun, it seemed she wasn't in the talking mood.

but soon came the nightshift. as much as nini said she wanted to do it, maddox put her name in for it first- and ash just had to pitch in to do it with her. what the fuck was her game? to try and kill maddox with kindness?

the darkness of the desert and village brought peace that maddie wasn't expecting. sure, was she still set on saving everyone, but it was all quiet, which helped her mind. she didn't need this. she was meant to be on her way to the south lake region by now to see what goods she could get for the hunters. but instead, she'd spent the last few days trying to get her bro bear and friends back.

the two sit there at the doorstep, with one concentrated maddox and a concerned ashlyn. they hadn't spoken since the argument in the tent. ashlyn had been thinking about it. hell, it was all ashlyn could think about. maddie had thought about it, too. but she didn't want to admit it. she didn't want to admit that maybe she was contemplating if she'd come off slightly strong on ashlyn. jet would tell her to stand her ground with her argument, anyways.

the wind lets out a low whistle as it passes them by, and ash watches as maddox clicks her gun all back together again for what felt like the millionth time. she can't stand it anymore. she doesn't know if its the silence or the repeating noises from maddie's actions, but she couldn't bare to listen to it anymore.

"if you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?" ashlyn quietly asks her.

a horrified, confused look spreads across maddox's face as she turns to the girl next to her as if she'd just asked her to kill another person, "what?" the question in response has a bitter tone, which ash tries to not take too carefully.

ash turns to look back at the village in front of them, and maddox is pretty sure that ash is then going to keep quiet. what kind of question was that? what fucking book had she read that in that claimed it was a good conversation starter?

"i ask myself that a lot." ash murmurs to maddox beside her. "it used to be where i lived or, my job or something like that." maddox stops clicking the gun and then waits for ashlyn to continue, "but now. it would be to help those who need it." maddox doesn't know what to say. wasn't that the whole fucking point of the sheriff? "not in a general sense- i wanna help people and give them shelter, use the money that we have in the village for good, not for power." maddie stays quiet at ash's words. was it a trick? was this to get back on her good side? "i think i'll resign as sheriff when i get back home." but then maddie freezes. what? no. that doesn't make sense.

"don't do that." maddox says it before she thinks it through. ash's head turns to her, slightly surprised she even replied to what she's said. "the northern heights will come back even more regularly if you stepped down, although richard is funny, he doesn't have the guts to stand up against lily." maddie continues to say. "you can probably do all those lovely community activities and still be a sheriff." she then mumbles.

ash stares for a second at maddox before receiving another glare that she didn't like, making ashlyn turn her head back to in front of them. "what about you?" she asks after another long silence. the way maddox then snickers causes ash to think it was all a bad idea to talk at all. she decides to at that point just keep all her thoughts to herself and that there was no point to really try with maddox anymore.

"i would find my parents. i don't know what i'd do, though." maddie then says. ash listens, nodding to show that. she's not about to start another argument. she knows damn well there's differences between her and maddie, but she wasn't about to give up. "they left when jet was seven. what was i supposed to do with that?" "i would tell them everything that's led up to where me and jet are today. just to see if they care."

"you didn't deserve that." ash tries to comfort the girl, but it's not easy. "neither of you did." maddie doesn't have a comment back, instead she holds back from rolling her eyes. when the two then sit there at the doorstep, ashlyn thinks, taking in everything that maddox has said to her since this whole situation had began.

"you were right." ash says. maddie turns her gaze up at ash and away from her gun again. ashlyn caswell admitting the outlaw was right? write the time and date down. "i get it all handed to me- all because of the fact i was born a caswell. and i've never even realised it until you said so." ash chuckles at how stupid she'd been up until then. "but i won't continue to let it happen."

"yeah? what're you gonna do? reject your monthly extra pay from your uncle?" the snarky comment slips from maddox before she can even stop it.

"no." ashlyn tells her. "i'm gonna do what i said i'd do. use it for good."

"like the stupid fund that's just for when people with jobs can't afford a horse that month that your uncle started to stay mayor?" maddox questioned, patience running thin. it was just a never-ending marathon for her.

"no. his idea was stupid and was made to get him votes, anyways." ashlyn agrees, "no- i would have a place that offered free shelter and food for those who don't have a job or need a fresh start. people from wherever could come and visit- all of it would be free."

"wow..." maddox nods at the thought, "can't wait to hear how you're gonna get the bucks for that one, sheriff."

"i'll get ej to talk to cash to give me the money." ashlyn dismisses. "he apparently can't say no to his golden son." and it makes maddox laugh. only for a second. but it is a laugh. "whatever happens tonight, you and the hunters will be welcome, maddox." ash tells her.

for a second, maddie wants to believe ashlyn, she really does. but then she remembers all the looks she and the rest of them would get the moment they'd step into town. the questions they'd get about where they get their money from. god, it would never end. "i wish it was that simple, ash."

L'ottava nota, Palermo

Nella Centrale Palermo, tra vecchi palazzi questo ristorante dell'arredo moderno offre un contrasto con l'ambiente circostante.

Il menu offre alcuni piatti alla carta e una degustazione. I piatti si basano su ingredienti locali ma con un'impostazione molto contemporanea. Ottimo il carpaccio di gambero rosso di Mazzara servito all'interno di un cornicione di pizza. Molto bello e suggestivo all'occhio e molto buono al sapore. Anche se con un mome non molto originale, le bavette mari e monti sono molto ben fatte con un insieme vario di sapori ma ben riconoscibili.

Ottimo il cannolo con ricotta freschissima e pasta croccante.

Servizio molto gentile anche se un poco I'm affanno sul vino.

Carta non molto grande ma con qualche etichetta di piccoli produttori naturali.

Ok so episode 8 thoughts In no order whatsoever

And EJ my baby yes to the singing

I knew EJ’s dad was gonna call in a favor or get EJ in somehow and of course he has decided he doesn’t want to go. I was hoping for more of a scene though than the 30 sec moment but maybe next episode we’ll see what happens next

Next episode definitely looks like it’s mostly gonna be through group video call probably because of COVID but they only filmed 2 episodes without COVID so???

The scene of how is singing to Kourtney was beautiful and I love the montage with the other characters really showing feelings without saying anything you can just tell. Which also means they totally confirmed that EJ likes Gina even more than the episode already had.

EJ SINGING FINALLY IT BETTER NOT BE THE LAST TIME THOUGH I WANT AND NEED MORE!!!

Also Matt did an amazing job with the eggs I wonder how long he practiced that

Ricky and nini broke up and I was definitely way more sad about it than I thought I’d be but it did seem inevitable with where they stood at the beginning of the episode

Ashlyn trying to help big red with his career day stuff was cute but she went way overboard but the end showing up in a slices shirt was adorable and allowing Ricky to be there because he needed his best friend was so nice.

EJ staying until Gina fell asleep was interesting to say the least and leaving the duke jacket was precious but what happened after Ashlyn showed up before that? Also they totally would’ve kissed had she not shown up

Mr mazzara crushing on miss jenn has obviously reached its peak and I think she maybe figured it out idk but I hope to see more cause I’m more interested in them than anything else (with the exception of EJ of course)

EJ seems to put a lot of pressure on himself so I thought maybe it’s because of his dad pressuring him but it seems his only pressure was for him to get in to duke but then he calls in a favor when EJ doesn’t so he didn’t really seem to pressuring so now I wanna know why EJ tries so hard

If I was writing HSMTMTS S3

So, we know the drama kids go to theater camp:

Have the theater camp be run by Ashlyn and EJ’s grandmother: Penny Caswell

This would lead to Caswell Family Drama

which would lead to introducing the grandfather: George Caswell

We already know that George and Penny met at Duke. George was going to be a lawyer and Penny was studying theater. Penny got pregnant her senior year with Cash. She lost her chance at being a Broadway star to stay home and raise Cash (and eventually Dennis)

George bought the camp for Penny to shut up her complaints that he got to be this big shot lawyer and she never got to follow her dreams. George doesn’t understand/like musicals/theater.

George is close with Ashlyn, while Penny is close with EJ. Penny doesn’t mind that EJ is still exploring life, while George is furious that EJ isn’t going to Duke. Penny internally sees a lot of herself in Ashlyn and therefore pushes her extremely hard.

When Ash and EJ introduce Gina and Big Red, it’s Big Red who Penny doesn’t like. She thinks he is below Ashlyn’s standards and spends all summer trying to set Ashlyn up with another boy at the camp who has huge dreams.

Gina, for the first time in her life, is settled and happy. She helps EJ discover what he wants in life and helps EJ and Ashlyn with their family troubles.

Enter Ricky... He brings Lily along with him to summer theater camp. Lily puts on a fake front, but Gina senses that she is being fake.

Soon, an instagram account is created and begins bullying the East High Drama kids: Putting a pig’s nose on a pic of Ashlyn, a DUNCE cap on a pic of Seb, etc. One picture is revealed during each episode starting with 2 and ending with 7/8. All these pictures were taken at camp. So, the instagram has to be run by someone there. Gina, Kourtney, Big Red, and Carlos are the loudest voices telling Ricky that its Lily. But Ricky continues to defend her.

Gina call out Lily at one of the campfire sing-a-longs and Lily acts all dumb and hurt. Ricky and Gina argue (#Rina angst). Big Red breaks them apart and pulls Ricky aside. Red tries to reason with Ricky and explain why everyone thinks its Lily. Ricky blows up at Red and complains that the reason he’s team Lily is because ever since Big Red started dating Ashlyn, he’s changed and doesn’t have time for Ricky. Big Red goes off (#Redky angst)

Howie, seeing how Lily’s lies are pulling the friend group apart, pulls Kourtney aside and admits Lily stole the harness and he knew about it. Kourtney fumes. Breaks up with Howie and we get a girl bonding moment with her and Gina and Ashlyn. Kourtney shifts focus on making costumes for the camp’s summer musicale. Her costume prowess impresses Penny and Penny offers Kourtney a job at Caswell Camp anytime she would like one and writes her a letter of recommendation to Kourtney’s top college.

After Lily posted the Seb picture with a DUNCE cap on him, Seb confides in Carlos that he is dyslexic and learning is hard for him and when people put him down or call him stupid, it really hurts. Carlos decides that he comes from money and decides (with Seb’s permission) to hire Seb an amazing tutor to help him with school.

So, to recap: Ricky is fighting with EVERYONE, EJ is fighting with his grandpa, Ashlyn with her grandma, EVERYONE but Lily is mad at Ricky, Howie and Kourtney are on the outs but Queen Kourtney is thriving elsewhere.

As for Miss Jenn and Mr. Mazzara, Mr. M took the California Job and Miss Jenn is trying to make it work with Mike, but with every passing day she regrets it. She talks to Penny about her troubles. Penny explains her story with George and Miss Jenn realizes she wants Mr. Mazzara, that she is forcing herself to work in Mike’s life, but her and Ben just click.

CUTE COUPLE MOMENTS:

3x05: It’s the 4th of July and this episode contains the Seblos talk about Seb having dyslexia. In this episode, Seb confides in Carlos and Carlos decides he will do any activity that Seb wants to do that day. At night, during the fireworks, Carlos had EJ and Big Red spell out “I LOVE YOU SEB” in fireworks. Seb says ILY2 and they kiss under the fireworks.

3x08: Big Red is fed up with Penny trying to push Ashlyn closer to the camp guy and during a conversation with Ashlyn, he gets super short and testy. Ashlyn puts it together that Red is worried again that he’s not enough for her and tells her grandma to back off. She loves Big Red. It dawns on her what she just admitted and plans to tell Big Red under the star light (since lights are their thing). She drags him to a midnight picnic under the stars and they say their ILYs.

Portwell are cute all season. EJ defends his relationship with Gina to his grandfather pretty early in the season. They are full of fluff all season... until 3x12. EJ decides to go to Penn State (or any out of Utah college) for communications and videography. And Gina (once again) gets the rug pulled out from under her, and confused about what that means for her and EJ.

After her talk with Penny in 3x10, Miss Jenn misses the beginning of the camp musicale in 3x11 and flies to California to confess her feelings for Mr. Mazzara. They finally kiss and Mr. M admits California isn’t for him. He’s more of a Utah guy anyway.

Howie tries all summer to get Kourtney’s forgiveness, but she just won’t budge. During the camp musicale he sings another AMAZING ballad and says an impromptu speech about how in awe he is of her and how he screwed up. Kourtney is touched and agrees to start again but he has to gain her trust back.

George and Penny have a sweet moment in 3x11 or 3x12 after he watches Ashlyn and EJ sing and starts to see what Penny sees in the musical/theater stuff.

Ricky, being on the rocks with all his friends, starts to wonder if they were right about Lily. He steals her phone while she’s taking a swim in the lake and sees that she truly is the one behind the horrible pictures of his friends. He confronts her the morning of the musicale and they break up. Throughout the musicale he makes amends with the gang, especially a really sweet Big Red/Ricky moment. Then, the season ends with Ricky looking for Gina to apologize after the show, and she's sitting in the dark, alone by the lake. He notices she’s crying and she admits she doesn’t know what her and EJ’s future is going to be. He sits besides her and wraps an arm around her. SEASON ENDS.

The East High Drama Club does another Instagram video but this time to “What Time is It”

a Miss Jenn/Penny duet (HSM’s Ms Darbus and HSMTMTS’s Ms Darbus)

a Kourtney/Ashlyn/Gina acoustic friendship song after Kourtney is hurt by Howie

George singing to Penny as a surprise after he understands her love of musicals for the first time

of course a bunch of others, but that all depends on what musical they do.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading! I liked season 2, but it wasn’t cohesive. Plots were dropped and the core of the characters and friendships were lost or forgotten. I feel like although the characters would be going through individual drama, all their drama is connected and plots aren’t dropped the next episode. Also, I’m neither a Portwell or a Rina, I ship more of Gina and happiness so I tried to give both Portwells and Rinas stuff they would enjoy.

P.S. NiNi is in California writing/recording music. I don’t think Olivia is likely coming back so I had all this in mind without NiNi being on the show.

HSMTMTS 2x05 Review

The Quinceañero was a truly historic ep featuring the first time two boys have ever kissed on a Disney show. Let’s dig in!

We got the second same-sex kiss in Disney history tonight, Big Shot had the first last Friday, and the first kiss between two boys in Disney history. It’s a huge step forward. That’s not to say that Disney is going to start approving more same-sex kisses or lgbtq relationships or characters but the door is now open and at least some other shows and movies will be able to eventually follow in HSMTMTS steps.

Really nice cover of The Climb, Joe has such a great voice. It was cute that young Seb had watched young Carlos’ dance vid and felt inspired. Frankie and Joe being an irl couple certainly helps give Seblos a good rapport but it also helps that creator and showrunner Tim Federle is an openly gay man himself. I think if a straight man was showrunner we probably wouldn’t get such dedication to Seblos as a couple.

It was a really funny ep too: Carlos saying his love language is riddles, Ricky asking Nini who they talk to when doing their confessionals, Carlos saying Miss Jenn was a master of smoke and mirrors, Benjamin Mazzara and Mike Bowen interacting. My personal favourite gags were when Big Red said he always wanted a nickname and Kourtney immediately did an office stare and when Nini said Picasso was a terrible person.

Gina still going through it. Kourtney is right that it doesn’t really make sense that Gina is now going to all this trouble for Carlos but to be honest the writing and pacing has been disjointed so far this season so a lot of things aren’t flowing as well as they need to. Is what Gina regrets convincing Ricky to go back on stage as that helped get Rini back together? That’s petty but fair and also true to teenage emotions (though she shouldn’t beat herself up too much, Rini were clearly on the path to getting back together by that point anyway).

Jesus Christ, Ricky needs to read the room. Last ep he correctly realized that Gina wouldn’t want to hear about his Nini issues and tried to stop Big Red from mentioning them but now he’s just doing it himself? Obviously they’re trying to drill in the fact that for now Rina is one sided but it’s a little much. Also really doesn’t make sense that Ricky wouldn’t go to Kourtney or Big Red for this kind of advice.

Sofia Wylie was killing it this ep, both her and Joe are showstoppers. A Dancer’s Heart was great and she did a good job of acting on the verge of tears almost the entire ep

At least EJ actually thought to ask Gina how she’s feeling though and she clearly appreciated it after she got over her shock. It does seem that reports of Portwell’s demise were greatly exaggerated, with the music and the longing stares they’re setting up for at least EJ to have a crush on Gina. Hell even Mazzara picked up on it at the end. I had noted last week that it seemed like Gina’s story line in S2 was being thrown out of balance by the writers dropping a planned Portwell plot and sure enough this week we actually begin to see Gina’s story arc not being entirely her pining over Ricky.

EJ also benefits by being given something to do instead of just standing around in the back. I’m glad he took Mazzara up on the AV club offer and they have a nice mentor-mentee relationship going on. It’s also a nice little parallel with 1x05 when Gina told off EJ and had a moment with Ricky and now in 2x05 Gina tells off Ricky and has a moment with EJ.

Matt seemingly dismissed Portwell as a friendship rather than even hinting at something between them. I guess he could have been told to keep it under wraps as much as possible but odd that they wouldn’t hype it a bit; it’s not like this came completely out of left field, people were wondering if Portwell might happen because of the moment they had in 1x10 and the facetime call they had before S2. Sofia has already said that Gina will have love interests this season and EJ being one, even if it’s brief, would make whole lot of sense since there’s really no one else for except Jack who only shows up much later and doesn’t seem to be in more than an ep or two.

Rini was sweet tonight. Yes Ricky is being clingy which stems in large part from his mom’s abandonment and in fairness Ricky and Nini have probably been used to spending much of their time with each other since they were kids. Loved that ‘I think you kinda you know’’ call back tonight. Looks like Nini will be cast as the Rose which should be interesting.

Miss Jenn is pulling Mike Bowen, Ben Mazzara, and Zach Roy. Good for her! Jike shippers certainly feasted tonight as Mike crashed a teen bday party just to see Miss Jenn and we got confirmation that everyone’s fave Disney Dilf was born in the 70s and must be no older than 51.

Well gotta love Lily’s commitment to bringing down East High and drinking scalding hot black coffee. She really seems like she just stepped off the set of Glee

Really hope we see those puppies and man was that wolf adorable

Not both HSMTMTS and Love Victor both making Okay Boomer jokes (it worked when Pilar said it to Felix but not when Ricky said it to his dad)

Big Red exposing Kourtney and Howie was good and it looks like their plot kicks into high gear next ep

Bet Tim thought he was real clever for that shot of Mazzara, Mike, and Miss Jenn in a triangle

A well shot ep except for one weird and abrupt cut from Mazzara saying Caswell to Seblos outside the barn

Looking Ahead:

EJ stopping Gina from leaving would certainly further their relationship and would parallel him being the one to bring her back in S1. I still don’t get why they didn’t just use the Valentine’s chocolates as a plot device to further this plot; just have EJ secretly send them as he was also lonely and you can still have Gina think they were from Ricky.

From what I’ve seen online this Portwell hint has been controversial. It’s true that there’s an age gap between the characters of 2ish years and a much bigger one between the actors but I don’t think that will stop Tim as he already had EJ date Nini. I’ve also seen comments that it would be a bad idea since EJ is leaving at the end of S2 once he graduates but he’s not actually leaving, they’ll keep him around in some fashion until the current juniors graduate.

So far it seems like Rini is the Rucas of hsmtmts, Rina is the Lucaya, and Portwell is the Joshaya.

Kowie starts progressing a bit next ep and we may possible see Antoine next week or the week after according to Larry.

Presumably Ricky’s clinginess starts causing trouble between him and Nini.

Still so funny that North High just up and decided to do Beauty and the Beast just to bring down East High.
