Big Obsidian snow

The Big Obsidian Flow is the youngest lava flow in Oregon, at the juvenescent age of ~1,300 years before present. It's a product of the most recent eruption of Newberry Volcano, the largest in the Cascade Range north of the California border (Medicine Lake Volcano is the largest overall). Newberry is a bit enigmatic - it's a huge volcano with a high rate of large eruptions but is not on the main Cascade volcanic arc. There's a number of converging fault zones in this area, which probably create significant crustal weakness allowing magma to percolate through the crust quickly.
Obsidian is common in lava flows of the rhyolitic composition, which is the most evolved kind of magma. Rhyolite magma spends lots of time spent in the crust for crustal rocks to contaminate the magma body and for heavier iron/magnesium-rich minerals to settle out, leaving behind a melt with over 68% silica (quartz). Silica is the same stuff regular glass is made of, so the higher your silica content then the glassier your lava flow is likely to be on the surface. The bands present in big chunks of obsidian are the result of shearing, differential cooling/composition, and flowing during the lava flow. This is very thick, sticky, viscous lava that doesn't like to flow. As it cools, it breaks rather than bends and turns the lava flow into a moonscape of glass shards and boulders.
The large amount of obsidian at this and other flows around Newberry Volcano is interesting because the volcano is mostly made of basalt - a lava with a near-opposite composition from rhyolite. Akin to Mauna Loa or Iceland, most of Newberry's lava flows form a broad shield more than 60 miles N-S and 30 miles E-W (roughly 100x50 km). The central part of the Volcano is about ten miles (16 km) across and contains a caldera formed when the central summit collapsed ~75,000 years ago. The caldera has been filled by subsequent eruptions and by two lakes separated by a big pumice cone. This means that the volcano produces - simultaneously - a wide range of magma compositions, indicating a complicated and long-lived magmatic system. Hazards from Newberry (to the 200,000 people living on its slopes) are not limited to fluid basalt eruptions that slowly blanket the landscape but also major explosive eruptions. The Big Obsidian Flow is a representative of the latter. Ash and debris from that eruption is found as far away as Idaho, and is many meters deep near the eruption's vent.

Celebrating a special day with this amazing birthday cake for a wonderful boy!
Before crafting this delicious masterpiece, I made sure to ask his mom about his interests, and guess what? He’s a fan of kitsunes (Japanese foxes)!
Just like the birthday boy, our little fox cub here is growing, proudly displaying its 5 tails.
Fox figurine crafted from chocolate sits atop a cake covered in rich ganache.
Here’s to a day filled with sweetness and joy! 🎉

Did you know that there is only one Blockbuster store in the world still open?
Tumblr media
If you grew up in the 90s or early 2000s, you probably remember the thrill of going to a Blockbuster store and browsing through hundreds of movies and video games. You might also remember the disappointment of finding out that the movie you wanted was already rented out, or the annoyance of paying late fees for returning your rentals past the due date.
Blockbuster was once the king of video rental stores, with over 9,000 locations and 60,000 employees at its peak in 2004. But as online streaming services like Netflix became more popular and convenient, Blockbuster’s business model became obsolete. By 2010, Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy and closed most of its stores. By 2019, only one store remained open in Bend, Oregon.
The Bend store became the world’s last Blockbuster in July 2018, after the last stores in Alaska and Australia closed down. It has since attracted visitors from all over the world who want to experience a piece of nostalgia and history. The store also sells merchandise like T-shirts, hats and face masks, all made by local businesses.
The store is managed by Sandi Harding, who has been working there since 2004. She is known as the “Blockbuster Mom” and is the star of a Netflix documentary called “The Last Blockbuster” that was released in March 2021. The documentary shows how Harding and her staff keep the store running despite the challenges of stocking new releases, competing with online services and dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Harding said she has received flowers and calls from people around the world who thank her for keeping the store open. She said she is proud to be part of a community that values nostalgia and real-world interactions.
The Bend store has no plans to close anytime soon. It has a steady lease agreement and loyal customers who support it. Harding said she hopes to keep the store open for as long as possible.
So if you ever find yourself in Bend, Oregon, don’t miss the chance to visit the last Blockbuster on Earth. You might just find your favorite movie or video game from your childhood, or discover something new that you never heard of before. And don’t forget to say hi to Sandi Harding, the woman who keeps the Blockbuster dream alive.

Is it winter or is it spring? Or should we just call Sprinter what it is, a manic and sometimes unstable tease that relishes in the mind games it plays.
One moment the sun is working, as in throwing some heat, and the next it jacks up the wind, drops the temp and seemingly gets a good chuckle at playfully giving you the finger and maybe even rolling on the ground in laughter when your frozen hands drop your hot coffee.
I once was into gardening and drooling over seed catalogues. I still can get suckered in at times and still have some garden groups I follow. Sprinter loves an unseasoned Central Oregon gardener, and their vibrant enthusiasm on a lone warm day. Sprinter giggles as they plant seeds way to early or purchase plants to get a jump on the season.
I think I’ve taken Sprinters humbling garden lessons and have accepted my successful garden harvests will be mint and horseradish in mass (they thrive in my tough love gardening approach of enjoy the water when and if you get it, though I’m not sure who needs such massive quantities of mint and horseradish).
Instead of fussing over seeds and plotting when to plant (like in late May for the three blinks and we’re done season), I instead fuss over and plot and plan knitting. Hands downs it is my sort of gardening. And pesky Sprinter does a great job of reminding us to get outside but wear a darn hat or headband.
Showcasing a Mirror Pond Headband shortly after Sprinters tantrum of temporary crazed snow globe weather this morning followed by pristine blue sky. I’m guessing more tantrums are in the forecast.
How is your Sprinter? Just as crazy making or a more sensible version? (at Bend, Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co7w5MPpajb/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Today's painting This was painted from a photo reference I took when visiting my son Wyatt Pace in Bend Oregon last winter. We drove up into the mountains to get a view of the Three Sisters and surrounding peaks.I was especially intrigued by the glimmers of light reflecting off the distant slope edges on Broken Top. I did use masking in this painting to save the light of the sky and highlights which gave me the freedom to work the rest of the painting as a wet in wet.I ended up keeping the sky white because I loved the contrast against the blue/purples of the mountains. I used Cobalt Blue,Alizarin Crimson,Lavender and Verditer for the distant Blues and gradually added Turquoises and Yellow Ochre as I moved down the page.I softened the masked edges with a scrubby brush and then worked wet into wet over top to integrate the shapes into the larger forms. Foreground took several applications, working vertically, to build up the darkest darks with Ultramarine Blue, Perylene Green, Paynes Gray.I then touched on pure opaques, Jane Brilliant #1 (Holbein) Lavender (Daniel Smith) as highlights and let gravity do it's thing. The end....
