Dating from 542, it’s the oldest church of Paris! It became a Benedictine abbey in the 8th century. As a lot of monuments, it was rebuilt and restaured over the centuries, but its present plan dates from the 11th century.

my feelings towards the bbc series are a mixed bag overall but i do love milady’s scene in the confessional where the writers dared to have her utter the words “why did god abandon me? why didn’t he answer my prayers?”

The monks graveyard by Rob Sutherland Via Flickr: The Benedictine Abbey at Fort Augustus, built in 1874 and later a private school before becoming The Highland Club. This is a view not often taken of the place (which I have been desperate to explore for a long time) is taken from the monks graveyard which occupies a piece of land between the main building and the southern end of Loch Ness. I was shooting a video and some interior shots on Friday but the weather was terrible so I left the externals until this morning which paid off in terms of the final results!

More ceilings, specifically Gothic ones! Not to be a dork about it, but I think they’re super neat!!! Gotta love that English Gothic architecture.
In this case, it’s Bath Abbey (aka the Abbey Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul)! Founded in the 7th century CE, it’s gone through a...number of reorgs and renos, in the intervening 1,400-ish years. It was caught up in the dissolution of the monasteries (1539 CE) and then was just a regular church, not an actual abbey, but like, before that, it had Benedictine monks, so that’s pretty nifty, I guess. It’s still referred to as an abbey, anyhow.
It was restored by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the 1860s; he was known for that sort of thing, apparently. Victorians, am I right??
It’s right down in the middle of Bath, in Somerset. Which is beautiful, and just as vaguely pretentious and expensive as one might imagine, given that the entire city is a World Heritage site. And yes, there are baths in Bath.
