Q: How did you first start doing music?

I've always loved listening to music and singing and I used to play the saxophone and guitar at school. When I was 16 I started putting some covers up on Soundcloud; just for friends really. A few people in the industry reached out and that's how I started working with my producer Josh Fountain.

Q: In what kind of environment and with what equipment do you makeyour music?

Normally I create in the studio with my producer Josh or whoever I'm working with in LA. At home I use Logic and my interface to record vocals and do some production. I always head into the studio with some lyrics and melody ideas I record on my notes.

Q: What is important to you when making music?

The most important thing is that I like it!

Q: Any music or other art that has had an influence on you.

I'm inspired and influenced by all sorts of musicians and artists ...I love finding new music and exploring music from all over the world.

Q: What was the first song/album (and from which artist) you bought,and why did you buy it?

Overgrown" by James Blake was an early favourite which really showed me what sort of music I truly love. He continues to inspire me today.

Q: Do you have another job besides working with music?

Not any more! At the very beginning I washed dishes and made Pizzas at two different restaurants and made music in my spare time. Luckily I was able to give these up when I signed with Republic early 2019.

Q: What do you think you would be doing if you didn’t work with music?

I would have liked to have been an astronaut or worked in animal rescue

Q: What is something that makes you feel glad that you are working with music?

I get to do so many different things and work with some amazing people making music, creating visuals, shooting stills and videos . I'm involved in every aspect of my career and I make all the decisions myself. This is super empowering and I'm very grateful to be in this position.

Q: Any artists that have caught your interest recently, or any artist

in particular you are feeling respect for at the moment?

I love Pink Pantheress, Alice Phoebe Lou and WhizzKid. In New Zealand I have recently started a female lead Record label called Olive Records and I'm so keen to introduce the world to the first two artists we have signed: Muroki and There's a Tuesday, they're so incredibly talented.

Q: What is music to you?

Music is my form of comfort and a place to express myself

Q: How were you as a child?

I was active and creative. I loved playing sports like netball, water-polo and football. I also loved drawing and making things. I loved animals and insects ; I was always trying to save spiders in trouble !

Q: If you could give any advice to your younger self, what would that be?

Stay strong

Q: Something you have been really into recently? (For example: agame, a type of food or dessert, a show on Netflix. Please share aspecific example)

I've rekindled my love of surfing so I've been driving out to Piha with my new longboard . Piha is an amazingly beautiful , wild black sand beach on Auckland's West Coast.

Q: Do you think that you have changed in some way recently? And if so, how?

I'm definitely happier than I was last year. I feel that things are slowly coming right in the world...at least I hope so!!

Q: What is the best news you’ve had recently?

That my world tour is finally going ahead!!

Q: What is something you bought recently that you really like?

Two large wall rugs by Claudia Kogachi and two paintings by Tanja Jade ; both NZ artists I love.

Q: What is something that has caught your interest recently, and why?

I'm very aware of Climate change and the effect this has on our Pacific Island neighbours in particular; it's such a pressing issue. I'm trying to reduce my use of plastics as much as I can.

Q: Any social issues you have been paying extra attention to lately?

I'm very interested in mental health and animal welfare. So many people are suffering from poor mental health at the moment. The way some animals are treated just breaks my heart.

Q: Tell us something good about your country.

We have an excellent female leader who has steered us through the pandemic with very little loss of life. Maori culture is such a unique and important part of Aotearoa.

Q: What do you think is important when it comes to communication? Honesty

Q: What do you do to relieve frustration or stress?

I like walking my beloved dog Tui somewhere beautiful.

Q: What is your dream?

I'd eventually love to live by the sea on a big piece of land , surrounded by family and animals that I've rescued .I want a fluffy cow, a pig and a pony !

After 22 years living in Chicago, I would have never thought I would be moving back home. Traded a home near the lake to a home on the beach to be near family. Thank you Chicago for being so great. Benee is such a good artist and this songs will always make me thing of Chicago.
