Courtesy Beyond Russia OBJECTIVES Here, in this essay, I will restrict the scope of my discussions to the experimental playhouse Grasim Lebedev founded in 1795 under the banner “Bengally Theatre”. The playhouse was alive only for two gala nights within a range of three months before it was lost into fragments of historical irrelevance. I intend to restore…

The Art of Offering Naivedya to Mother Lakshmi by a Ritual of Surrender (Samarpan) of Optical Geometry of Beauty to the Eyes of the World
In the woodcut lithographs and serigraphs in the luminous moons of tetra-aeonic manuscripts, the pulsating pattern of her movement in poise, her dancing feet over icy waters, amazonites, corals, rubies and milkwood roses, strings the lyre’s ephemeral songs They are sung in the orbs that dazzle in her celestial diadem and in the grasses that hung over blue bells or autumnal seeds Gazing into the…

A benevolent patron decided to pay for 5 twenty minute slots to be awarded to people who'd like to commission me but lacked funding at the moment. Aside from making me feel like a renaissance artist being supported by a wealthy noble, it was also just a lovely thing to do!
Here's the 4th slot, 20 minutes of @supernovasolace's gorgeous bengal kitty!

I swear to god that Cholera is like the Corn of diseases. Like yes the word "Cholera" has been used in English to describe various diseases involving nausea and vomiting since at least the 14th century, but nowadays Cholera refers very specifically to a much more lethal disease caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacterium. While this bacteria seems to have been present in the Bengal region since at least the 16th century, the first pandemic level outbreak of it did not occur until 1817 and it didn't reach Western Europe until the 1830s during the second outbreak (having spread from Russia, which it had received it from Central Asia where it had traveled along trade routes from it's origin point in India). Also notable is the extent to which it was a disease of poverty. While certainly not restricted to the urban poor, due to their terrible standards of living it affected those segments of society to a very disproportionate extent; both spreading easier in the cramped and unhygienic conditions and acting with even greater lethality on bodies already weakened by malnutrition and overwork. Meanwhile wealthier people could outright avoid it by leaving the city during period of outbreak. The connection between poverty and cholera was very much noted at the time; before being explained in bacteriological terms this connection was attributed to causes ranges from Miasmas released from dirty soil and water to divine punishment for the immorality of the poor.
Basically my point is that Cholera didn't even exist in Europe until the 19th century and while it may have claimed some high profile victims the vast majority of the people it killed were impoverished city dwellers. I am sick of people casually talking about like Renaissance Noblemen coming down with it. He would not die of that

i came across a scene from devdas where He Hits her with the necklace and the night before the wedding. And everyone in the comments was Screaming how abusive that is and that she should have Hit him back and so on. Like him giving her this scar is even mentioned in Paro's next Song where she sings the scar He has given her will leave a Mark she carries like their love, so there's a meaning to it. And Not the typical "abusive boyfriend" Type. Surely what devdas did wasnt okay but the scene itself is dramatic. Paros words are literally talking him down it's a dramatic scene itself.
Ah but you see, scenes like these are not for posers on internet who don't WANT to understand context and time. They just want to use a movie scene to show outrage in account to show how amazing they are- to themselves and to random strangers online.
That scene is frankly very pivotal in emphasizing WHY and WHAT is Devdas's hamartia in this tragic tale of his downfall and that is anger. In that scene Devdas has come back after his heated fight, impulsive take off from his home, breaking off with Paro over a letter and cooling down to realize that he is making a mistake. At this point, Paro is over his attitude. Of forgetting her behind , it seems all over again, in his emotional turmoil with his father, after she risked her honor and reputation to just talk to him once and risking it all for him.
Tumblr media
It really highlights the irony that Devdas looks down on his father for inflicting trauma on him and being angry but in the end his downfall comes at similar anger. To him his father's biggest hated vice is not anger, but PRIDE. As he says to Paro, as she is shoring up her face to push Devdas away so she could proceed to finish getting ready for her wedding, "so much Pride? even Moon doesn't have this much Pride" .
"How could [The Moon have such Pride]? That Moon is riddled with stain"
youtube
At this point Paro wanted to push his button and she succeeded. This is scene ends with a mark on Paro's face which is parting mark of their doomed love. Also showcasing WHY they cannot be together- they are both failing and succumbing to their vices.
So in a way yeah Devdas is being toxic...but so is Paro. Being toxic and and being a Toxic person are two different things. This is the woman who knows her lover's trauma and his attitude but at that point in time she isn't willing to dishonor her parent's name by eloping on the day of her wedding. By the time she will be willing to risk this dishonor, to risk social stigma just to even get a glimpse of Devdas...it would be too late.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chattopadhyay like Shakespeare with Romeo and Juliet wrote Devdas to highlight the social injustices that was rife in Bengali society at that time and the class and caste discrimination, the misogyny directed against women and her family etc was something he was strictly against. He was clearly an advocate of men and women risking social ostracization in order to live their life and reform their society. He was a writer at the peak of Bengali Renaissance, a period of time CRITICAL for social, Independence and Literary reform of Bengal which will spread through whole of India and will give our country gems like our National Anthem and National Songs.
This is why he condemns the society via this story which forces Paro constantly consider the "bad name" her family will get if she steps out of line for love, and also condemns her alongside Devdas to even care about these shitty social restrictions at all!
After all, she is in the end daughter of a couple who married inter-caste. A Brahmin with a "jatra" caste daughter. Sure they don't have much money and aren't talked about in society with respect as much as they deserve even after 15-20 years of marriage, but they are genuinely happy. But this happiness , unfortunately would elude poor Paro and Devdas.
This is the foreshadowing of this scene. They have so much love but also so much pride and anger within them.
In the end Devdas dies and Paro lives a life of infamy and cloistered isolation. Neither of them got what they ever wanted with each other and even without each other.
youtube
{ ........the ending scene STILL FUCKS ME UP SO BAD..WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!}

well I’m being flippant. there’s an obvious way in which the Bengal Renaissance Hindus wanted to reconcile ‘Hindu’ belief and practice with Christian ideals. Even when I was a kid a lot of Hindu Americans would say ‘well, technically we’re monotheistic; because all the gods are avatars’ as though simply being monotheistic was a superior and desireable quality. You can see this (this is my pet thing right now, can you tell?) in Weil also. But the idea has clearly been actually ahistoricized

This is the worst year for everything to happen to Justin. Contract year, pressure from the other QB's (Tua is up and coming, and it seems Burrow found himself) everyone on his ass. God I hope he has a good support system. But I agree with the anon it's definitely lawsuit related.
This season is already feeling like the twilight zone with how things are shaping up (but it is only week 3, a lot can change).
Tua is having a renaissance after being written-off as a draft bust previously.
Burrow has struggled out the gate but that's probably due to the fact he had a freak injury during the off-season. It's week 3 so there's time for the Bengals to improve and they did beat the Jets recently so we'll have to wait and see how their season pans out.
Jalen Hurts is also fucking killing it with the Eagles, which I don't mind bc I actually like Hurts. He's a feminist so we stan.
I hope so too. He's got a strong family unit around him so hopefully he's leaning on them for support. It's gonna be a tough and long season ahead

Reviving Tradition: The Resurgence of Handloom and Craftsmanship in Indian Fashion
Tumblr media
In the vibrant tapestry of Indian fashion, there lies a rich heritage of handloom and craftsmanship that weaves together the threads of tradition, culture, and artistry. As fashion trends evolve and global influences permeate the industry, there has been a notable resurgence of appreciation for India's traditional textile techniques and artisanal craftsmanship. This revival not only celebrates the country's cultural legacy but also fosters sustainability, empowers local artisans, and preserves age-old traditions.
Handloom textiles hold a special place in Indian fashion, embodying centuries-old weaving techniques passed down through generations. These fabrics, meticulously crafted on hand-operated looms, carry a unique charm and character that sets them apart from mass-produced counterparts. From the intricate jamdani weaves of West Bengal to the vibrant ikat patterns of Telangana and Odisha, each region boasts its own distinct handloom tradition, reflecting the diversity and richness of India's cultural landscape.
One of the key factors driving the resurgence of handloom textiles is the growing demand for sustainable and ethically produced fashion. In an era marked by environmental consciousness and ethical consumerism, discerning individuals are increasingly seeking out clothing that aligns with their values. Handloom fabrics, often made from natural fibers such as cotton, silk, or wool, offer an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic materials, with minimal environmental impact throughout the production process.
Moreover, the revival of handloom textiles plays a crucial role in supporting local economies and preserving traditional craftsmanship. By investing in handloom products, consumers not only contribute to the livelihoods of skilled artisans but also help sustain a centuries-old craft tradition that is deeply intertwined with India's cultural identity. Many non-profit organizations and government initiatives are also working towards promoting handloom weaving clusters, providing training, infrastructure, and market linkages to artisan communities.
In addition to handloom textiles, Indian fashion is also witnessing a renewed focus on traditional craftsmanship, including embroidery, dyeing, and embellishment techniques. These artisanal skills, honed over centuries, add a touch of luxury and artistry to garments, transforming them into exquisite works of wearable art. From the intricate zardozi embroidery of Lucknow to the vibrant mirror work of Gujarat and Rajasthan, Indian craftsmanship showcases a breathtaking array of techniques and designs.
Designers play a pivotal role in championing traditional craftsmanship and incorporating it into contemporary fashion. Many couturiers and fashion houses collaborate with skilled artisans to create bespoke pieces that blend heritage techniques with modern aesthetics. By marrying traditional craftsmanship with innovative design concepts, these designers not only preserve age-old traditions but also push the boundaries of creativity and craftsmanship in Indian fashion.
Furthermore, the resurgence of handloom and craftsmanship in Indian fashion has garnered attention on the global stage, with discerning consumers worldwide seeking out authentic, handmade products with a story to tell. Indian designers and brands are leveraging this international interest to showcase the country's rich textile heritage and artisanal skills, fostering cross-cultural exchanges and collaborations in the process.
In conclusion, the revival of handloom and craftsmanship in Indian fashion represents a renaissance of tradition, culture, and artistry in an increasingly globalized world. By embracing handloom textiles and traditional craftsmanship, fashion enthusiasts are not only making a style statement but also contributing to sustainability, cultural preservation, and artisan empowerment. As we look towards the future, let us continue to celebrate and support India's rich heritage of handloom and craftsmanship, ensuring that these timeless traditions continue to thrive for generations to come.

When perusing the works penned by luminaries like Rani Chanda, envy stirs within me, for she was graced with the fortune of intimately knowing the Renaissance Man of Bengal, Rabindranath, and the venerable Abanindranath. Nightly, I immerse myself in the tome that unveils profound simplicity, unravelling what we once deemed intricate as the pinnacle of artistry. As individuals, we often misconstrue the elaborate as a testament to our intellectual prowess, failing to recognize that beneath the veneer lies nought but a fool, oblivious to the profound beauty of simplicity that resonates with the core of our being.
In our journey through life, we neglect the inherent tragedy that surpasses the allure of adventurous escapades to distant mountains. While I appreciate the tranquillity of mountains, there exists a serenity in the silence of self-dialogue, where no ears heed the uttered words. Yet, amidst the quiet companionship of souls who need not speak, a profound connection thrives. Shall we not revel in the profound silence that echoes in the depths of the ocean, where even amidst the vastness, one converses with their soul, their truest companion?
For in this expansive solitude, where souls commune without the need for spoken words, there lies a trade with the silence of Shangri-La, where companionship pales in comparison to the profound exchange with one's own soul, a rare and invaluable union.
