এক ফালি ইতিহাস
A Slice of History
So my father went to the Kolkata International Bookfair or any Bangali's favourite Boimela. He saw a stall of Sulekha inks...The Sulekha inks and of course he had to explore.
Let me share with you a brief history of Sulekha....
Around 1932 Satish Das Gupta, an ex-chemist of Bengal Chemicals prepares Swadeshi ink, names it Krishnadhara and sells it through Khadi outlets. He then hands the recipe over to Maitra brothers Shankaracharya and Nani Gopal and asked them to make the ink commercially and call it Sulekha ( there is also a story which claims Kobiguru Rabindranath Thakur gave them the name সুলেখা or Sulekha ). After years of an illustrious journey they closed around 1990 and then reopened in 2006.
So my father purchased three things. Two inks and a notebook.
The first ink is a blood red ink called সেলাম ( Selaam or Salaam ). It was made as a gift to Bangladesh commemorating The Language Movement ( ভাষা আন্দোলন ). At first 21 bottles were gifted as a tribute to 21st February. And the creator of the ink mixed in a drop of his blood in the first 21 bottles. Then the ink became popular and was manufactured more. It is a beautiful red colour...and every drop of this ink holds in it the memories of every drop of blood shed for my beloved Bangla Bhasha.
The second ink is a vibrant green. Coloured just like the green of India's Tiranga. This ink was formulated on the day after India's Independence. It is called Swadhin or স্বাধীন.
The third is a notebook made in collaboration with jamini Ray's family. And I absolutely love that notebook.

Mahalaya is so wild because you'd think waking up at 4am is some religious ritual, but no, it's entirely social. Some ninety years ago everyone just collectively decided that it's Absolutely Necessary to wake up at the ungodly hour of 4am every Mahalaya to. listen to a radio program. We Have to listen to it every year otherwise the economy will be in shambles

A little poem
(tr. "Green waters, where the waterlilies bloom red, as it became dark, fog hid the lazy lake's bank")

There is a Bengali serial on Star Jalsha called Ramprasad about the famous eighteenth century Bengali saint, Ramprasad, who wrote poems dedicated to the goddess Kali. As a Shakt and a devotee of Ma Kali, I wanted to like it so bad but oh my god. It's dripping with so much melodrama and the typical, age old, cliched cunning evil mother-in-law versus sweet innocent daughter in law. Some of the actors are such nautankibaaz as well. Ma, please forgive me, but sitting through this serial is a pain 😭😭😭

কাল এমন চমৎকার রাত ছিল।
সমস্ত মৃত নক্ষত্রেরা কাল জেগে উঠেছিল- আকাশে একতিল ফাঁক ছিল না;
পৃথিবীর সমস্ত ধূসরপ্রিয় মৃতদের মুখও সেই নক্ষত্রের ভিতর দেখেছি আমি;
অন্ধকার রাতে অশ্বত্থের চুড়ায় প্রেমিক চিলপুরুষের শিশির - ভেজা চোখের মতো ঝলমল করছিল সমস্ত নক্ষত্রেরা;

Folk Goddesses of Bengal
বনবিবি (rom. Bonbibi)
In the sparse region that confines the largest mangrove forest on Earth is the Sundarbans. The delta of the mighty Ganga, Brahmaputra and the sisterly Meghna is the region of co-existence between man and the wild. Bonbibi is the protectress of the forest, the wild, the bees, the birds, and the people. She represents the bounty of the forest, and her foe the tiger king Dakhin Rai, the hazards of the same. Her fierce battle with the evil Dakhin Rai has been inspirations for many. She doesn't differentiate between who pray to her, the hindu, muslim, christian. Just as the forest doesn't differentiate between who it welcomes, or who it discards. The forest, and the rivers form the livelihood for the forest dwellers, who pray to the mistress of bees, tigers and the creatures of the forest before embarking of their daily hunt for bread. However, the goddess has one condition, for she is the mother of all of the forest,
"Take what you require, not more not less. Don't harm the forest, and no harm must come to you."
A simple norm by which those who enter the delta, must abide by. A simple norm, which we all must abide by.
