Falling from grace, I watch it all come apart Knowing I could've changed it all from the start I can't breathe, I need to break free From the anger that is constantly inside of me Fighting myself, I always lose Fighting myself, I always lose

hi!!!! ok this probably sounds so stupid but how many people do you think have read the secret history and find it exciting to be going to the school where it takes place?
Hi!
That's a totally valid question! I will say that as someone who transferred here in fall 2022, nearly every new student said that they were interested in Bennington or found out about Bennington because of The Secret History. It has been really exciting to live and study in a world that has become literary canon! The campus is as beautiful as it is described in the book, and a lot of students study literature/history/philosophy (myself included!). It really feels like the place where a novel or story or poem is just waiting to be written.
(Also, I live in Donna Tartt's old room in the 'literature' house, Franklin, on campus! This is not confirmed, but I can convince myself lol).
Thank you for your question!

I’ve been thinking a lot about Boris explaining why he stole the painting by saying “I am thief” (page 563). I feel like this is also true of Donna Tartt.
I’m not saying it’s a bad thing-- in many ways, it’s an incredible gift. she sees things, people, places-- collects them, presses them into the perfect words...
No one creates atmosphere like Donna Tartt. I mean, look at how obsessed with Vegas we all are! I’ve never been, but after reading The Goldfinch it feels like one of my soul’s homes & I’m lowkey planning a trip.
It’s a gift so powerful it’s kind of scary-- Have you heard the Bennington podcast about Donna’s college days? (Though I’m obsessed, I do think it’s probably ethically questionable. They delve into her personal life without her consent & that’s not cool, no matter how fascinating she is.)
But anyway, in the pod, they talk about how in her first book The Secret History, her fellow classmates were astounded at how she took her characters from amongst them. And she did a scary good job of it. I’m not saying there was no artistry involved-- Of course there was! Donna’s a genius.
Anyway, apparently she did it again in The Little Friend. I haven’t read it, mostly because I’m mad at Donna for it. According to the pod, Donna stole the story of her friend’s brother’s murder for that book-- without even warning the friend before it was published, nevermind asking her.
I imagine Donna feels bad about it, but if she were really backed into a corner & asked why she did it, she’d shrug helplessly & sigh, “What can I say. I am thief.”

We're pullin' apart for no reason We're pullin' a trigger in a useless war And if we come back and go into the black What are we fighting for? It's just friendly fire

The perfect article for every The Secret History fan.
It talks about the years Donna Tartt and other writers attended Bennington College.

Here are some pictures of Bennington throughout the seasons! The campus is beautiful, especially in the fall (look at the foliage!). The big building in some of these pictures is Commons, which is the main building on campus that has the dining hall, a student-run cafe (Roz's), various classrooms and study spaces, and the bookstore.
Photos taken by me!
