Black and White in Harsh Light

When I was out and about last week looking for some photographic fun, the light and cloud/sky interest were a little weak, so I decided to focus on some details in the environment and cut out the sky entirely from any shot I took. Additionally I wanted to convert to black and white to help the eye focus on the textures of the Rock and long exposure water.

This is shot on my favorite camera of all time, the Nikon D750, @ f/13 for maximum depth of field, and is around a 1 to 1/2 second long exposure. I took a few of each and frankly I can't be bothered to check right now just for the post.

I made this photo while using a Hoya CPL filter (circular polarizing fillter) to cut down on a little of the glare and shine on the wet rocks, and and this was stacked on top of a 6 stop ProMaster ND filter (neutral density filter) to allow for longer shutter speeds in bright light.

Godrevy Blues by Lloyd Austin Via Flickr: A thoroughly enjoyable late afternoon exploring the rocky ledges during low tide at Godrevy. Having arrived early I could scout the area and look for compositions I could work with. There was a photography group snapping away when I arrived at this particular spot so I waited patiently and before long I was alone and loving the scene in front of me. Although the light wasn’t ideal, there was some nice blue tones and fast moving cloud… A little later I was joined by fellow Flickr friends Dom Haughton and Lee Finney for a sundown shoot and some cliff top shenanigans, so more tales to come… Thanks very much for viewing, take care and have a great weekend :-)

an island in the sun by adrian harrison Via Flickr: well its been over six months since ive picked up the camera gear, thought id break myself back in gently with a walk around rydal water. mist and fog seemed to be blanketing the whole lake district and i was quite tempted to go elsewhere but stuck to my guns. pretty glad i did as the conditions were just perfect.
