romeo and juliets driving theme is not silly teenagers falling in love, it is the male cycle of violence and how children will always be it’s worst victims
and the sooner you guys realise that the better

I want a version of Romeo and Juliet where the Prince goes fucking OFF in his speech after Mercutio’s death.
I want a Benvolio who is weeping as he explains what’s happened, who is trying to hide his
I want actors who take the general iambic regularity of Benvolio’s speech and the slightly less regular metre of Prince’s pronouncement as evidence of the attempt at controlled performance but who just jump on the Caesurae of lines like ‘who, all as hot, turns deadly point on point’ or the messiness of ‘of stout Mercutio, and then Tybalt fled’ if they’re Benvolio and then contrast that with the insane regularity of ‘this is the truth or let Benvolio die.’
And I want a prince who fucking jumps to finish that half line of Montague’s with ‘and for that offense/ immediately we do exile him hence’ and then loses it for the next two lines which cannot be contained by metre but are balanced in rhyme.
I’ve just always loved the way the Prince’s speech juxtaposes the ‘hearts’ proceedings’ of the feud with ‘my blood for your rude brawls doth lie a-bleeding’ and the way he cannot speak of Mercutio but personally, the way he speaks of the feud as the proceedings of their heart but of Mercutio as his blood, essential to himself.
Also Mercutio and Benvolio should kiss and I will say more about that if anyone literally looks in my direction.

My lukewarm takes on Romeo and Juliet characters, heavily influenced by the specific production I watched yesterday
Romeo: So extra. Absolute drama king. He would watch Encanto and not be able to stop thinking about it for a month. He absolutely fell in love twice in a week based purely on looks, but that love was pure and romanticized to no end. In his mind, it was worth dying for. He should have been allowed to be a stupid kid, but under the circumstances he felt forced to marry in secret.
Juliet: Every adult in this girl’s life failed her. Of course she fell in love with Romeo, she’s thirteen. Their relationship isn’t particularly profound, it’s their devotion. Their innocence. When you were a thirteen-year-old girl, didn’t you fantasize about doing something drastic just to make your father understand? She’s the girl who acted on that fantasy, in the most horrible way. And she’s a child. A baby. They’re all just babies.
Paris: Himbo. Yeah, he tried to marry a thirteen-year-old girl. Yeah, he’s probably an adult by our standards, or close to it. However misguided his feelings toward her, though, they were real. He felt protective toward this girl he’d barely met. That wasn’t the blood feud talking. It was his meathead himbo brain. What caused this man to think it was okay to marry a little girl? How was he so casual about it? Why so violent? We’ll never know.
Benvolio: Shares an archetype with Horatio. Guy who lives, but at what cost? When I read the play he seemed like the sweet, reasonable one, but this production really played up the teenaged boyness of it all. The important parts to him, though, are that he loved Romeo, and he didn’t want any of this. Noticeably absent in the final acts.
Mercutio: Baby. Actual tiny baby man. I read this book when I was fifteen, I had no maternal feelings toward any of these kids, but this actor’s Mercutio broke me. He was just a little goofball from a rich family, he had no concept of consequences. The actor was an adult but somehow made his voice crack. When he started a swordfight over a cause that had nothing to do with him, it was like I was watching a puppy trying to play keep-away with a tiger. Tybalt even backed off and tried to sheathe his sword, but Mercutio gave him a little *boop* on the backside and it started again. His death scene started off laughing and ended in screaming. After Act III, all jokes in the play cease.
Nurse: I just feel bad for whoever gets cast as the nurse to get insulted for three hours.
Friar Lawrence: Who does this guy think he is? Okay, he couldn’t have predicted the plague or the duel, but he seems very confident about courses of action that have a high likelihood of ending in tragedy. The lesson is, don’t enable teen hormones just because you think it’ll help you end a blood feud. I can’t discount his good intentions, though, and the kids would probably have been worse off without him.
Tybalt: I seethe.
Lord Capulet: I’m doing this for your own good but also I’ll ruin your life if you disobey ok? <3
Lady Capulet: She definitely shares some of the blame for what happened, but her love was genuine. She had been brought into this cycle at Juliet’s age, how was she supposed to break out?
Lady Montague: idk why shakespeare thought killing her offstage was necessary. we don’t even find out until after the climax so why? it’s more thematically consistent if all the deaths are young people.
Rosaline: If thou findeth thyself in a Shakespearean tragedy, get thee to a nunnery.

Fellow academics, Shakespeare nerds, book lovers, and just anyone who is good at finding stuff, I need your help.
There’s an old Tumblr post (I feel like I remember seeing it somewhere around 2013-2106) that I’d like to include or at least cite in my dissertation, but I can’t seem to find it to save my life. My dissertation centers around engagement with Shakespeare in online spaces of fandom, and I’d like to use this post to demonstrate how some of the ideas I’m discussing have been a point of interest for fans for years across various sites.
The specific post was a set of photos of different stage directions from Romeo and Juliet, showing all of the times that Benvolio and Mercutio enter/leave together and it ended with Benvolio’s final entrance alone. There may have been some text accompanying the photos, but the photos are what I remember the most. If you know the post I’m talking about, I would greatly appreciate your help in tracking it down!

ㄨ Romeo
⁺ Although extremely stupid- as exhibited from his irrational behavior, I believe he actually learns quite quickly.
⁺ When he was dancing at the Capulet part (1968 film), he learned quickly how to dance, although a bit poorly.
⁺ Anyways, he'd be the type to mess up a bit, glance over to someone else doing the same thing and then copy off from them.
Has probably tripped once or twice and always snaps his head back to blame someone for tripping. (Tybalt has been there once or twice...)
Secret handshakes with Mercutio and Benvolio- sometimes making one that requires all three present at once.
Everytime he's scolded his brain just. Flatlines. He literally doesn't take anything in. (Although a lesson not to do whatever got him in trouble in the first place.)
Plucks flowers from gardens to gift to Mercutio/Benvolio as a joke- more seriously to Juliet (..or yourself, if you'd like).
Every time he writes letters to specifically his friends, he adds a small " ! " to his signature.
Has so many inside jokes..
If he were to fall/trip, he'd fall right on his face. I don't make the rules. (I do)
When Romeo is happy, he always has a little pep in his step- like he's all giddy and happy.
Scratches his head when he's confused.
Seems like the type to be writing something and then accidentally misspell the easiest word ever.
Has a habit of just dozing off, leaving a lot of his friends confused
Sneaks out a bit, not a lot like Mercutio may but a reasonable amount to either meet up with friends or just for himself.
Writes horrible poetry that Benvolio and Mercutio support.
Definitely is the type to have a bedtime and tell his friends, "I can not come, as the moon rests high in the sky and beckons for me to sleep!"
Sneezes like a little girl imo
He definitely has a goofy, silly little smile.
Juliet
I just know she smells like flowers every day- how she does it? Remains a mystery..
So many little jokes with Nurse that no one else would know about.
Doesn't openly call Nurse "mom" but she enjoys to refer to Nurse as she would a mother rather than her biological mother.
Also kind of clumsy, she couldn't carry a bucket full of only water to save her.. (💔)
Actually sometimes indulges in reading poems time to time.
Very, very much the type to pick a flower and smell it.
Loves to pick up flowers, pedals, feathers, etc.
Probably has a collection of dried up flowers gifted to her over time.
Juliet really enjoys incorporating little cute things in her outfits!
Views Tybalt as an older brother rather than her father's cousin.
Makes references to things only Nurse knows so it leaves everyone else much confused- and on rare occasions Tybalt might get it, too.
Picks up her dress when she runs, like a princess.
Definitely the type to be like, "Excuse me. Mind your manners..." whenever she hears someone curse.
Whenever she sees Romeo, she faces fully towards him and holds her hands out - and he comes to pick her up and spin her like a little ballerina !!
Has attempted to draw/paint multiple times before, and whenever done- Lord Capulet always hangs it up with much pride no matter if it looks "funky."
Tybalt
"Grab me my rapier"
Definitely the type to take great pride in his swords
Actually, seems like the type to keep a GIANT sword collection.
He's definitely the type to overhear conversions in secret but then give the fattest side eyes/disgusting glares.
Tybalt 100% has his lips sealed with any secret. Never could get anything out of him.
Juliet actually hides behind Tybalt quite often (not usually physically), and Tybalt isn't afraid to defend his younger sister.
Also, 100% defends Nurse, or rather any woman in his life. He's most definitely a woman's boy.
Has the most sly grin you'll ever see in your life.
His deep voice actually very often scares people, so depending on who he's talking to; he'll either lower his volume and attempt to speak softer or keep speaking in much confidence.
He'll soften his voice for the nicer, quieter folk and speak loudly for the annoying and cocky guys.
Little bitty scars all over him from him attempting to perfect his sword fighting skills.
Very often flaunts off and attempts to look flashy and show-offish.
Even though he's old enough and pretty mature, he'll never ever consider drinking or smoking. He believes it's far too disgusting for himself.
Although Nurse isn't Tybalts true mother- Tybalt will have moments where "momma Nurse" slip out.
Actually kinda enjoys keeping things neat in order - in his room at least, outside, he doesn't mind getting a little messy.
On that topic... Tybalt very often helps out Nurse with chores and such, but no one really notices because he doesn't want to be seen like that (question mark)
The definition of wet soggy cat
Other than that- he just is overall very sweet and polite.
Benvolio
Definitely the type to write little poems or works of literature but always puts it to the side to "continue later"-
He never finishes them and usually Romeo would come by and read those works out to Benvolio as a way to just tease.
Has very, very specific humor- he only really laughs at inside jokes.
Of course, he'll have a nice laugh at a funny joke but, inside jokes are what really get him.
The type to accidentally snicker at the wrong moment and have to excuse himself. (😭)
Though this would only be around friends, he most definitely can control himself from laughing around Lord Montague and such.
Very polite fellow
Seems like the type to like cross his hands when sitting down and he sits down very politely and tightly-
He doesn't want to take up much space on benches anyways.
If he was a cat, he'd be that one cat with an apple that just sits there all polite getting pet by a giant wooden spoon.
Very gentle with everything and everyone. Either physically, emotionally, or verbally-
Despite being extremely polite, he is the one that has the best insults ("thee mother looks like a yellow belly, tavern hopping maniac, it's no surprise thou looks alike!", also said in the most polite way possible)
Has a nice, gentle voice. Slightly accented, though, unlike many.
The hat he usually wears - the one seen in act 1 (1968 film) - is one from long ago.
It was gifted to him, and he constantly wore it when he was a teen-ish, but it was a bit too big, so it'd cover quite a bit of his face.
Longer hair >>>
Somehow, has extremely beautiful, long lashes.
He strangely enough seems like the one to get hurt least often, but when he does, it's like the worst thing to ever happen. (Que Benvolio accidentally falling out a window)
Picks up little branches and sticks to collect randomly ?? He doesn't really do anything with them. The sticks either end up getting thrown out or forgotten about.
The type to be writing something and then accidentally slip up and create a massive mark in the middle of the paper without a way to hide it.
Has maybe fallen out a window before ?
Benvolio has so many unnecessary items laying around in his home
He has a collection of beads/rocks of sorts- all very polished and shiny.

Just a friendly reminder that these are all headcanons 🫶

when i disappear no true crime podcasts will be recorded about me. when i stop showing up to classes no one will call the police to file a missing persons report. no talking heads will be given by my grieving mother or my shocked friends or criminology experts staring down just left of the camera explaining the mysterious circumstances of my last days. no security footage will be combed. no photos of me will be rendered in black and white with my eyes crossed out. no red yarn will be pinned to corkboard.
when my instagram story goes quiet for the last time no one will notice. none of my 242 followers will frown and scrunch their eyebrows and click through and wonder what ever happened to him? no one will share missing persons flyers in their stories or post pictures of us together in the third grade on the year anniversary of my disappearance. no one will ever hover their thumb over the unfollow button wondering whether it’s worth it.
when dust begins to gather on the notebooks i filled no one will crack them open. no one will thumb through the pages and run their fingers over lines of poetry i never got to read aloud or smile at the jokes i scribbled down but never got to tell or marvel at the plans and designs for sculptures i never got to build. no one will carefully inspect every sketch and doodle and wonder how i got the ideas i never got the chance to explain. no one will read the frantic diary entries wondering what the hell is wrong with me. no one will ever again wonder what the hell is wrong with me.
when i disappear no one will remember how hard i tried. they will forget how fiercely i pleaded and how ardently i protected. they will forget how i poured my everything into heralding a world that we all knew was fated never to come. they will forget how bravely i smiled when it felt like the world was ending. and they will forget what bullshit i put up with. and they will forget how i took it all without complaining. and they will forget how i never half assed anything in my damn life. and they will forget how sincere and wise and loved and funny and tired i was. and they will forget how strong i was.

As mentioned previously, I had one 3% beer earlier and opened up my feelings about Romeo & Juliet like they were a sleeping bag that I might crawl inside and now I’ve been IN MY FEELINGS about Prince Escalus, Benvolio & Mercutio.
And now all I want is a version of Romeo and Juliet where the whole first exchange do act 3 scene 1 is delivered by a Mercutio who is holding Benvolio by the face and pressing his forehead to his.
Because SERIOUSLY the undercurrent of that exchange is so tender and furious it makes me ILL.
It’s about ‘please don’t brawl out here for nothing, I’m calling you good I’m using ‘thee’ my metre is so measured please listen please listen’ meeting ‘I know you, you’re trying to be good but you can’t be because none of us can you’re like me you’ve got mad blood and let me make you laugh because maybe that’s all we’ve got’ and then they’re joking about death and oh it’s simple, isn’t it? The fee simple of your life is an hour and a half?
Fucking FROTHING

Hii!! I read your intro post and you mentioned liking Ninjago and Romeo & Juliet :D Who are your favorite characters in both and why?
Thank you ☺️
oh! this was a delightful surprise. I just updated my intro post today (well, yesterday as of posting this), and I didn't think anyone would notice haha. thank you for reading it ^_^
I absolutely love both Ninjago and Romeo & Juliet, and honestly it's nice to have an excuse to talk about them on my blog. however, since you asked specifically about favorite characters, this will inevitably be a long one. I can never get myself to shut up about characters.
my favorite Ninjago characters are Nya and Jay (and honorary mention Kai). my favorite Romeo & Juliet characters are probably Mercutio and Benvolio (but I could make a good reason for any of them to be the best haha). very long rant under cut
--
so! let's start with Nya. first, I have to point out that she was horribly mistreated in canon. it was sort of inevitable- since she was "the girl," I feel like the creators felt like a lot of her arc had to be... being the girl? I'm just still a bit disappointed at her missed potential of just, y'know, being a ninja.
that being said, she's a flipping icon and I love her with all of my heart, and every time she's on the screen it makes me smile. granted, I totally project onto her (and her brother, our favorite Kai~), but even if you ignore my personal headcanons of her being aromantic and loveless, she's such a smart, stubborn, and creative character, and I love that for her.
also Jay. I love Jay. I feel like, as a fanfic writer, I treat him the exact opposite of how I treat Nya. every time I write about Nya, I write about her experiences with being aromantic, or her desperation to prove herself, things like that. when I write about Jay, it's like Jay's in love with Cole, or Jay's in love with Nya (actually unrequited love my beloved), or Jay's in love with Kai. (side note- I actually headcanon Kai as aromantic, too, but sometimes I put that headcanon on pause so I can ship him. because oh my god he has such cute ships.) anyway all this to say that Jay's an adorable goofy little guy and I like putting him in situations. (he also has massive angst potential but angst isn't really my forte.)
ok. Romeo & Juliet. before I get into specifics, I must say that the characterization in this play is criminally underrated. if it were released today, it would have leagues of fans obsessing over both Romeo and Juliet, and arguing over whether Romeo is a romantic or just an idiot, and getting into shipping wars (especially Benvolio/Mercutio vs Tybalt/Mercutio- though Bencutio is obviously superior). the fact that it only has 2000 fics on AO3 is a tragedy to rival, well, Romeo & Juliet.
(also- for my WttT followers and moots, if any of you have gotten this far, I have to say that we have very nearly surpassed Romeo & Juliet in number of fics on AO3. keep it up)
now if I was forced to pick favorites in Romeo & Juliet, I would have to say the aforementioned Benvolio and Mercutio- both as a duo and as individuals, they are so flipping wonderful. I saw a local production of Romeo & Juliet over the summer, and ever since then, I have been deathly defensive of them. I will fight over the fact that they're both so well written and well characterized. (I also super love them as a ship- in the production I saw, when Romeo and Juliet met for the first time, there were plenty of duos in the background, slow dancing, and Ben and Merc were dancing together, and I just... I have no words. they're perfect.)
anyway. Benvolio first. Ben is such a big cousin sort of character, iykwim. there's something so tragic about the fact that he tried from the very beginning to get everyone to stop fighting, but no matter what he did or said, he couldn't save them- not his cousin, not his best friend. (I've never seen Hamlet, but I'm told that Benvolio is the Horatio of R&J. Shakespeare knew which archetypes work, I guess.) he's so awesome. I love him
and Mercutio! Merc is just a kid you guys. he's a teenage boy. he's so funny and free spirited and every time I watch R&J, all I can think about is "he's here for a good time, not a long time." because it's so true! his recklessness and immaturity leads to his death! (another theme, perhaps- because while he did sort of bring it upon himself, I would never say it's his fault- but that's a rant for another day.) Merc is just so immediately lovable and his death hurts me the most. his death is the turning point between a mostly light hearted play to the tragedy that we associate with it, and that makes it hurt even more. (and Ben holds him when he dies and Ben is left all alone at the end, and oh my god Shakespeare is famous for a reason.)
so, yeah. this is very long and mostly unedited, sorry. you pushed the right buttons to keep me talking for hours. maybe I'll start posting more about my other fandoms, because this was a lot of fun. thank you so much for asking :D
