Batman inc vol 3 had a lot of potential going in, but for some reason the legacy of batman inc being,,,, uh,,,, bad.... has continued. continue reading for my very informal review of batman inc vol 3 (2022)
like imma give credit to Ed Brisson, bcuz bro got thrown a lot of historical Batman characters and an underused and kinda bad concept and just had to deal
but i feel like the introduction of all the new character was,,, a poor choice. Like Phantom-one was an interesting addition, but characters like gray Wolf and everyone in Phantom-one's entourage, were just unnecessary and confusing especially when it comes to getting new readers invested.
Like cool character designs but who the fuck?? None of them really drive the plot or anything either. I feel like a lot of them could have been cookie-cutter no name Phantom-one lackeys and that would have worked much better. We're in an era where so many writers are trying to introduce cool new character, and it just doesn't,,,,, like work? Unless you've got the opportunity to really flesh out a character, they just fall flat. and in a team comic like batman inc you do not have the time to focus on any one character!
Using ghostmaker's asshole status to trim down the og cast in the 2022 annual was a great move tho
also with the ability to bring people back in the future really easily!
Batman inc also had like all the issues of normal team comics and no clue how to resolve them. Like the plot set ups were solid and interesting but it was hard to get invested because there's was so much switching between different characters in different places.
I feel like this Batman inc revival could have been a good opportunity to actually dig into the concept of a "batman incorporated" and really flesh out some cool, but lesser known characters, but that wasn't the direction they went in.
I will say even with this, it was really nice to see some little character moments like this one of Raven Red and his dad(man of bats) <3
or this one of gray wolf and the knight(beryl) at a restaurant:
but overall batman inc vol 3 just, wasn't engaging? ig?
I will say that I loved the writing of Ghostmaker in this, he was very fun and interesting and i loved the complexity of him as a team leader, hopefully brisson will write him in a better series later!

Ok Beryl Hutchinson fans and experts, do we know if Beryl is 17-18 or 19+ during the Knight and Squire run?
I’m leaning 17-18 and still in sixth form (her mum is proud and also insistent Beryl finish her A levels. There’s a general disagreement over whether Beryl should go to uni - Beryl’s got the marks and Cyril’s willing to fund it but Beryl doesn’t want to leave Cyril by himself as she’ll have to move away)
I’m willing to be convinced that she’s older but the scenes in Time in a Bottle don’t force it, because it’s the UK, no age entry restrictions, and even if there was that pub does NOT CARE, Beryl’s probably been drinking there since at least 16.

Bruce did not avoid death. Like that's a thing that did not happen. I mean, technically he's not dead, but his family doesn't know that.
I can definitely see why Tim would end up chasing off after the faintest hope that Bruce is alive, though, because he believes that Bruce had a plan to not die and could successfully pull that plan off.

saddest thing to me about batman inc is that they legitimately have such a cool cast of characters and like just either do nothing with them or like white-wash/disrespect them.
