Jitters - Eddie Munson x Reader
An As You Wish story
Tumblr media
Collaboration with my darling @munson-blurbs
Summary: It's the first day of school for the Munson children--ever for Eliza, but their dad is being the biggest baby of them all.
Note: With all the back-to-school excitement going on I thought, "What would Eddie be like when Eliza first starts school?" So, voila. As always, I am so thankful for all of you who read and have the loveliest things to say 💕
Words: 3.2k
[As You Wish masterlist]
Tumblr media
If someone were to take bets on which Munson is the most miserable on the first day of school, they might pick Ryan. Sixteen years old, starting his junior year, and seemingly irritated by every move someone makes.
They might pick fourteen-year-old Luke, the Tasmanian Devil himself, constantly lamenting about how boring his teachers are.
Or they might pick Eliza, no longer getting to be the big fish in the daycare’s small pond, but now a full-fledged preschooler—one who is not happy about getting up early.
Any of these would be fine guesses. But they would also be dead wrong.
“My babies are all grown up!” Eddie bemoans, watching Eliza slide a comically oversized Little Mermaid backpack over her tiny shoulders. He stares at his sons as they shove their feet into their new sneakers, conveniently ignoring the repeated warnings not to break their shoes.
Ryan catches his dad looking at them and rolls his eyes. “Take a picture; it’ll last longer,” he quips, groaning when Eddie dashes into the bedroom to grab his camera. “Crap, I didn’t mean literally.”
“Swear jar!” Luke chirps, all-too excited to catch his big brother slipping up.
“‘Crap’ isn’t a swear word, dumbass.”
“Another dollar in the swear jar!” Luke roars, nearly colliding with the wall as he darts away from Ryan before the elder boy can get his hands on him.
You give the two boys a biting glare from across the room. If you can't keep them from using bad language all the time, they at least need to adhere to the rule when their little sister is in the room. Luckily, Eliza is currently admiring her new black Mary Jane shoes and was paying no mind to what was happening around her.
Before Ryan and Luke can start bickering again, you herd them over to the side of the living room where the lighting is the best for pictures.
“Come on, come on,” you say as you practically push them across the space. “Dad’s getting the camera, let’s get this show on the road.”
Ryan groans and drops his head back in irritation. “Can’t you just take some of Eliza? You have enough of us.”
“We never have enough of you,” you tell him, moving towards him on instinct to press a kiss to the top of his head—only to come face to face with the reminder that he’s taller than you now. “Eliza, come on over here, baby girl.”
Eliza looks up from where she’s now inspecting the pink overall dress she’s wearing. Her two curly little pigtails bounce with every motion. She hikes up her green sparkly princess backpack as she skips towards you. She becomes derailed, however, when Eddie walks back into the room. Eliza diverts her attention and makes a not-quite-a-surprise attack on his legs.
“Rawr! Gotchu Daddy!”
“Oh no!” Eddie feigns, clasping the camera to his chest. “I guess I can’t take you to preschool then, huh? Such a shame.”
“Nice try,” you tell him. “She’s still going.”
Eddie’s brows furrow together in another one of the little pouts he’s been giving you for the past few days. He thinks his baby girl is growing up too fast—does he think you don’t feel the same way? You just don’t show your emotions as expressively as your husband does.
“She’s only three,” Eddie says about your daughter. “Shouldn’t we wait until she’s at least four?”
“She’ll be four next month, Eddie,” you remind him. “This is when she’s supposed to start preschool.”
The sullen father has nothing to say in response to that, so he just looks down at the camera and fiddles with it, making sure there’s enough film and that it’s on the right settings. You take the opportunity to walk over towards Ryan.
“Was he this bad when Luke started school?” you ask in a hushed voice.
Ryan considers it for a moment before shrugging. “In my childhood mind, no. But I also used to believe it when Dad told me I’d look like Popeye if I ate my spinach, so who knows?”
“I can only imagine how he was with you.” With a small smirk, you grab Ryan’s arms and give him a small shake from side to side. “His first born,” you coo in a sickeningly sweet tone. Ryan shoos you away from him, but you can see the smile on his face that he’s trying his damndest to hide.
In the meantime, Luke grabs a Kleenex box from the kitchen counter, lowering onto bended knee and presenting it to Eddie.
“A gift for thou, Sir Sobs-a-Lot,” he says, adopting an exaggerated British accent.
Eddie thumps him on the back of the head, but takes a tissue regardless.
“Wayne always said I’d be screwed if my kids were as weird as me,” he muses.
“Dad,” Luke fake-whines, “don’t say that about Eliza!”
Eliza furrows her little eyebrows and makes a run for her brother, charging towards him like a provoked rhinoceros.
Luke is quicker, though, and holds her prisoner against his chest with a menacing cackle.
“Mean brother,” Eliza mumbles, face smushed against him.
He grins triumphantly. “That’s why you love me so much.” He presses a big smacking kiss to her cheek and lets her go, gasping in feigned offense when she wipes it away and wanders back to Eddie.
“Time for school! Let’s gooooooo, Daddy!” She takes his hand and tugs him towards the door, equal parts eager and exasperated.
Eddie obliges, but you can tell that this isn’t easy for him. “Why is she so eager to leave?” he asks you under his breath. “Ryan and Luke were practically wrapped around my ankles begging me to let them stay home.”
“I think she’s just excited to meet new friends and learn new things!” you say with a smile, trying to hold back your own tears. “Isn’t that right, Liza Bean?”
Eliza nods vigorously. “Luke says I get Play-Doh!”
“Remember,” Luke crouches down to tell her, “it’s important that you taste the Play-Doh before you use it.”
The comment earns him another thump to the head from Eddie.
“Please don’t eat Play-Doh,” you beg your daughter. Or listen to anything Luke says, you silently add.
“Yeah, just stick to your lunch,” Ryan offers, always the voice of reason.
“Lots of fruits and veggies,” Luke jumps in. “Remember why?”
“SCURVY!” Eliza proudly shouts, beaming from ear to ear.
Eddie exhales and rubs the bridge of his nose, at a total loss for words. “Can you crazy children just take the pictures so we can go?” he finally manages, patience sufficiently worn thin.
“Sir, yes, sir!” the boys salute in unison.
“Yes, sir!” Eliza chimes in, happy to emulate her big brothers.
You take the camera from Eddie when you see his jaw clench. You’d been afraid of your daughter having a meltdown today, but you obviously should have been worrying about her dad.
“Okay,” you say, nodding for them to arrange themselves in front of the wall for a picture, “all three of you, first.”
Begrudgingly on the part of the teenagers, and happily on the part of the little girl exiting toddlerhood, they come together and manage to stand still while you grab a few shots of them.
“Now just Ryan, then Luke, then Liza,” you instruct. Ryan rolls his eyes as his two younger siblings step away from him.
“This is never going to end,” he mumbles.
Figuring it’s just easier to ignore him, you get your pictures of Ryan before moving on to solo Luke and then Eliza. “Now get in there, Dad,” you tell Eddie, gesturing him over to join the kids.
The moment Eddie is within reaching distance of her, Eliza raises her tiny arms to her father and insists that he holds her in the picture. Eddie, unable to deny her anything as always, complies.
“Just me and Daddy!” Eliza says.
“Eliza’s will be done,” you say before snapping one of just the pair of them.
“All right, all right,” Luke says, motioning for you to give him the camera. “You get in there, too. We’ve got a monumental day here. Another Munson in the school system.”
As you pose next to your daughter and husband, you see Ryan out of the corner of your eye. He leans in behind you and holds up two fingers as bunny ears behind Eliza’s head. His little sister didn’t see him, but she was going to get a kick out of that once you got the pictures developed. Luke also noticed the photobomber, so he takes another nicer picture.
“We ready to go now?” Luke asks. “Big day for me too, ya know. Starting high school and all. No one’s all fussy over me and I bet it’s because I don’t have pigtails. Damn.”
Eddie claps Luke on the shoulder as you take the camera from your son. “Didn’t wanna make ya nervous, kid,” Eddie says. “Also, dollar in the swear jar.”
Luke scoffs and presses a hand to his chest. “Have I ever been nervous a day in my life?”
“Well,” Ryan starts with a smug smile, “that depends if you count the time that you got paired up with Missy Collins for that science project.”
Luke’s face turns pink and his nostrils flare. You’re almost taken aback because you think this is the most flustered you’ve ever seen the usually cool and mischievous boy. Luke goes from standing perfectly still to lunging toward his older brother in milliseconds.
Ryan just lets out a whooping laugh and dodges him by heading outside. Luke is hot on his tail.
Eliza looks up at you and shakes her head, little brown pigtails swaying with the motion.
“Boys,” she says, an air of sophistication older than her three years in her tone.
“Boys,” you agree, offering her your hand. Her little fingers slide into your own and you head out the front door behind the two teenagers. Eddie grabs his keys and follows his family out.
The keys jingle in your husband’s hand, a nervous tic as he walks over to the car and unlocks it. The three kids pile into the back and Eliza and Luke bicker over buckling her car seat as you slip into the passenger’s side.
“Everyone have everything?” Eddie asks as soon as the arguing stops. “Backpacks? Lunches? Or lunch money?”
A chorus of “yes” comes from the backseat so Eddie starts the car and pulls out of the driveway, instantly wishing he could turn around and take everyone back home.

You, Eddie, and Eliza somehow arrive at the preschool on time, but not before your daughter had thoroughly embarrassed her brothers on the high school drop-off line. She’d begged Eddie to roll down her window so she could yell to them as they joined their friends.
“Bye, Ryan! Bye, Lukie!” she’d shouted. “I love you!”
You and Eddie thought it was hilarious. Luke and Ryan? Not so much.
But now, your husband is a total wreck as Eliza marches full steam ahead towards the school’s doors. Truthfully, you’re almost as bad as he is, but you’re trying to keep it together—for Eliza’s sake and for Eddie’s.
“You ready, Eliza?” You crouch down and place your hands on her shoulders.
“Yep!” She nods, baby teeth on full display when she grins excitedly.
Eddie narrows his eyes in disbelief. “Are you sure?” he asks, making you roll your eyes.
“Yep!” Eliza repeats; thankfully, she’s oblivious to his inner turmoil.
“You’re going to have a great time and make lots of new friends,” you tell her.
“And I’ll be right here, ready to pick you up when it’s over,” Eddie adds as he crouches down next to you.
It takes all your strength not to roll your eyes again or elbow Eddie in the ribs.
Eliza nods her head, little pigtails bouncing with the movement. She hikes her backpack up higher and gives you both another wide smile.
“Ready to go in?” you ask.
“Uh huh.”
You take her hand and she leads you into her new classroom, Eddie following along behind you. He’s quite literally dragging his feet, a human version of Eeyore the donkey.
A teacher, not too much younger than you, comes up to greet you all. “Hi, everyone!” she chirps in a tone that signals over-caffeination. “Welcome to preschool! I’m Miss Riley, your teacher.”
For the first time this morning, Eliza seems hesitant. She looks up at you for approval and you nod your head at her.
“I’m Eliza Marie Munson,” she announces, and you bite back a laugh at her formality.
“It’s very nice to meet you, Eliza,” Miss Riley says. “You’ve got both Mommy and Daddy with you here today, huh?”
“Yep! Was just gonna be Daddy but then Mommy said she didn’t think he’d really take me here.”
You squeeze your lips together as your daughter calls out your husband’s behavior; Eddie closes his eyes, a small smile appearing on his face. Both of you know (partially due to your experiences with Luke and Ryan when they were younger) that anything that went on in your house that Eliza knew about would be fair game to be shared with her whole class.
“Well, I’m very glad you’re here,” Miss Riley replies, holding a hand out for a high-five that your daughter eagerly returns. “Would you like me to show you where your cubby is?”
“Okay!” Eliza turns around and waves to you and Eddie.  “Bye Mommy! Bye Daddy!”
“No hugs?” Eddie asks, a pout forming on his plush lips.
Eliza rolls her eyes as if this is the most unreasonable request she’s ever heard, but obliges.
You give her a tight squeeze, pressing a kiss to her temple. “You’re gonna have an amazing day, baby girl,” you remind her.
“I know, Mommy.”
Eddie’s hug can only be described as bone-crushing, with Eliza letting out a dramatic grunt as he holds her.
“Eliza Munson, you are the smartest, bravest little girl I know,” he says, voice catching in his throat. “I want you to go out there and kick some a—butt,” he hurriedly amends, but not before earning a glare from you.
“Most importantly, be nice,” you emphasize, hoping your advice trumps Eddie’s little half-time pep talk.
“I will!” Eliza happily declares before following Miss Riley over to the cubbies.
Eddie looks back and forth from her to you. “That’s it?” he asks. “That’s all we get?”
“What did you want?” you ask as you slip your hand into your husband’s. “Want her to cry and beg you to take her back home?”
“Well, no.” At your disbelieving eyebrow raise Eddie shrugs and amends his statement. “Not entirely.”
“We got hugs and goodbyes,” you point out. “Ryan barely acknowledged us, and Luke gave you a Wet Willy. I think we should cut our losses.”
“I know,” Eddie says, letting out a defeated sigh.
You gently tug him in the direction of the door to exit. “She’ll be fine,” you reassure him with a whisper. “And she’ll be so excited to tell you all about it later.”
Eddie nods, and just as the two of you are about to walk out the door, something rams into Eddie’s legs. He looks down to see Eliza grinning up at him, little arms wrapped around his knees.
“What’s up, Sweet Pea?” he asks, suddenly worried that something’s wrong. Was someone mean to her? Did she forget her lunch at home?
She jumps like a little jumping bean until she’s right in front of the two of you.
“I love you!”
Your heart swells and the pressure of tears is heavy behind your eyes. There’s no way you can look at Eddie because clocking his emotion will absolutely send you over the edge.
Eddie’s already tearing up though and has a bright smile on his face. “We love you too, Liza Bean,” he tells her. “So much.”
She giggles and you scoop her up in your arms. “We love you more than anything.”
You and Eddie press kisses to her cheeks at the same time, and Eddie blows a raspberry with his, making her giggle.
Once you set her down, Eliza blows you both a kiss before skipping over to a table where a few kids are drawing, already settling in.
Eddie wipes at his eyes as the two of you step out of the classroom and into the hall. “That’s what I wanted,” he admits with a tearful chuckle.
You wrap your arms around one of Eddie’s and lay your head on his shoulder. “You okay?” you ask him.
“No.” He sighs when you press a reassuring kiss against his shoulder. “I’m just trying to keep it together for your sake,” he says.
At his words, you pull away to look at him, eyebrows raised. “This was you holding it together?” you ask.
“Oh, this could’ve been way worse, babe.”
You chuckle as he slips his hand into yours, knowing that he’s likely telling the truth.
The two of you take one last look inside the classroom and see Eliza talking and laughing with a little girl and boy at her table.
“Come on,” you say, patting the back of Eddie’s hand with your free one.
With a reluctant sigh, Eddie starts to walk with you towards the exit.
“And I know Miss Riley is younger than me but don’t get any ideas.” You smirk and nudge his shoulder with your own, trying to joke around and cheer him up a bit.
Eddie puts his hands up in defense. “Hey, she’s a teacher. I only go for babysitters.”
The late summer morning is hot as you make the journey back to your car. Still the gentleman as always, Eddie opens your door for you.
“Man,” he shakes his head as you slip into the passenger’s seat. “I can’t believe my baby is in preschool.”
He closes your door and walks around to his side, giving you time to open your purse and pull out a small object, hiding it beneath your hands in your lap. He starts the car, though you’re fairly certain your heartbeat is louder than the engine.
“Well,” you start before clearing your throat. Eddie looks over at you and there’s suddenly a million butterflies not only in your stomach, but throughout your whole body. “She’s not going to be the baby for long…”
You hand Eddie the test, watching as his expression shifts from sadness to confusion to awe as he stares at the two pink lines.
“You’re pregnant?” The excitement in his voice rivals that of a kid on Christmas morning.
“I’m pregnant,” you confirm, grinning with your own excitement. The emotions that you've been trying to corral all day finally come out, relief and giddiness flowing through you as you tell your husband what you've been dying to amongst all the other chaos of the day.
Eddie lunges across the center console to wrap you up in his arms, letting the positive test drop into his lap. “Holy shit, princess.”
“I know,” you say with a giggle.
Eddie’s still in shock, grinning from ear to ear and rubs his hands over his face. “We’re gonna have another baby,” he says, just to hear it aloud.
“And just think,” you say, “you get to do this first day of preschool thing again.”
His nose wrinkles at that prospect. “Maybe I’ll just homeschool this one.”

Can I go where you go? Can we always be this close forever and ever?
Last race before the summer break was Spa, a race that held a special place in Charles’ heart. He had there, his first F1 victory ever but it had been tainted by the loss of Anthoine, the day prior. It was always pretty emotional for him to come back here. But today, it was even more special. He was there as the leader of the championship and it added an unexpected pressure. As usual, Lyanna was there to support him and he was grateful for that.
Charles dominated his rivals on the track and finished first once again, securing not only the win but also managing a Grand Chelem. As the Monegasque anthem was playing on the podium, Charles looked at the sky while closing his eyes and Lyanna knew that he was thinking a lot about his dad. But as soon as it stopped his eyes found Lyanna and he pointed first to his trophy and then to her mouthing an “I love you” that was caught on camera. But both of them did not care.
Summer break was finally there and Charles was excited to finally be able to relax. His idea of fun was spending every moment possible with Lyanna, his family and friends and if possible, on his boat away from everything. But it was also an important time for him and Lyanna since it was marking the first year of them knowing each other and he wanted to make it special. That’s why one morning as she was sleeping soundly in his bed, the early rays of sunshine kissing her naked skin, he went to the bakery to buy chocolate muffins. Careful to not wake her when he came back in the bedroom, he got to his side of the bed and proceeded to cuddle her and kiss every inch of skin his lips could come across. She whined before stirring up, her lips finding Charles’.
“Good morning, beautiful.” He whispered against her lips as she slowly curled up in his arms.
“Good morning.”
“Did you sleep well?”
“Very, very well. I have to say that you tired me out last night.” She added a smile in her voice.
“You loved it.”
“I really, really do.”
“And since I don’t have anything else to do, I promise you that I’m going to spend the next three weeks worshiping you as you deserve.”
“Words, words, Leclerc. I need less than those and more action.”
“And I promise you, you will but first, breakfast.”
“Thank you, I’m so hungry. Let me get some clothes first and I join you.”
She took a quick shower before walking to the kitchen, her wet hair in a messy bun and saw the table dressed impeccably.
“Are we celebrating something?”
“Not necessarily. It’s just… it’s been a year since I’ve met you and I wanted to do something nice to celebrate.
“That’s very sweet.”
“I bought chocolate muffins.”
She looked at him knowingly.
“You remember.”
“Of course I do. How could I forget the way you looked when I opened my door and saw you holding them and how you were ready to run away. Back then you were just the pretty girl I had met in the elevator. Those muffins hold a special place in my heart. I could never forget them.”
Lyanna smiled gently at him and went to him. Charles welcomed her with open arms as she sat in his laps and buried her head in his neck.
“You’re the best boyfriend ever.”
“Wait until you see what I have planned!” he laughed, kissing the top of her head.
Curious and excited, Lyanna let Charles guide her with absolute trust. She didn't question him when he gave her a sports outfit to put on and did the same. And neither when they drove off in the car and parked by a footpath away from the town. But when Charles took the backpack from the trunk and held her hand, Lyanna understood.
“Don’t tell me we are going to hike to La Tête de Chien.” She complained, making him laugh at the déjà vu feeling he got.
“Yes, this is exactly what we are going to do. But this time, I’m not letting go of your hand because I know that you are resourceful enough to run away.”
And he didn’t let go. And just like the first time, she complained all the way. Half-way to the top, Charles couldn’t handle her protests anymore and decided to carry her on his back. It was hot and the sun was bright in the sky but he didn’t care, she finally was quiet and seemed content with her position.
“How is it up there?” he asked as he could feel her hair tickling his neck.
“Perfect. It’s comfy and the view is amazing.”
“Beware that I’m not dropping you.” He teased her, repositioning his hands below her knees.
“You wouldn’t dare.”
“Do you want to test out that theory?”
As he was talking, he abruptly lowered his arms making Lyanna squealed and gripping his neck a little too hard.
“Don’t worry, love, I’m never going to let you fall. But if you could stop strangling me, that would be nice. I need to breath to be able to carry us to the top.”
They finally made it in one piece and just like the first time, Lyanna was blown away by the view. They settled on the ground as Charles was handing her a bottle of water and an apple.
“Even a year later, it’s still the most beautiful view of Monaco.” She admitted while taking pictures.
“I agree.” Said Charles not really looking at the landscapes, something Lyanna caught.
“You’re cliché.”
“You’re my most beautiful view, Lya. In the morning when I wake up, when I’m on the podium, when we’re cooking dinner, when we’re watching the tv and you fall asleep on my shoulder or late at night when I’m about to go to bed. I love watching you.”
“Stop, you’re making me blush.”
“I love to do that.”
“You’re exceptionally romantic today.”
“I know, I just have a hard time realizing it’s already been a year and, in a few weeks, it will be officially our first anniversary. Time went by. And so fast.”
“I understand exactly what you mean. If someone would have told me how much I was about to change a year ago, I would have laughed at them. Life works in the strangest and most unexpected ways.”
They stayed up there for a while before finally deciding to move. As nice as the view was, tourists were beginning to arrive and their peace and quiet was disturbed. They spend the rest of the day walking around the Monegasque streets, until the ended up in the late afternoon at Le Jardin Exotique.
“Last time we were both there it was late at night.” Whispered Lyanna.
“And you were acting weirdly cute. I remember thinking that you were someone I needed to get to know better. I wanted to be your friend so badly back then. Knowing what I know now, I think I was already attracted to you.”
“Oh, you had a crush on me, Leclerc?” she teased him, poking his side.
“I think so, yes. Even if I didn’t want to admit it to myself.”
“You know? I think I was already crushing on you as well at the time but I was a scared and unconfident girl. I would have preferred to die rather than admitting it.”
“Everyone could see that we were destined to be together but us. We were both too stubborn to see it when it was right in front of us the whole time.”
He looked at her straight in the eyes and lowered his head to capture he lips with his.
“There is one last place I want to take you before we go out on my boat to eat.”
The last place he took her was the graveyard and Lyanna knew exactly what he had in mind. They walked on the alleys, in silence, until they reached a grave, a little on the side of the others, under a tree. Charles stepped forward and knelt down, sweeping up the leaves with one hand.
“Hey dad, it’s me. It’s been a while, I know. I could’ve come sooner but… it’s still hard you know? Even after all this time. I didn’t come alone, though. I have a very special someone that I would like you to meet.”
He grabbed Lyanna’s hand and pulled her to him before squeezing it slightly. The young woman walked up to the grave, beside Charles.
“Hi, hello… oh my God this is so awkward. I’m Lyanna, your son’s girlfriend. Charles, it feels so weird… I… I just wanted to say that you raised an amazing man. Sure, he can be stubborn sometimes and a real pain in the ass but he is also loyal, caring, strong, honest, funny, and patient. He is my safe place and my home. I’ve never thought that i would be able to love again, or to know what love feels like but your son… he shows me what it’s like. Everyday. I’ve not been the perfect girlfriend or even friend to him in the past but he never failed me. And God knows I failed him more than once and he could have given up on me. But he never did. Not once. Instead he built me up when I was falling down to my knees on the ground. And I’ll be forever grateful to him for that. So I guess, what I’m trying to say is thank you. For raising him like you did, for bringing him to me. I would have loved to meet you and I hope that from wherever you are, you can see how amazing he is.”
Charles let involuntarily a tear escaped. He kissed her temple, whispering with a voice laced with emotion.
“He would have loved you; he would have said that you were perfect for me and that I should marry you someday. And I would have looked at him with a smile and said yes.”
This time, it was Lyanna’s turn to get emotional. The talks about their future were limited. Not because either of them were scared or uncomfortable to talk about it, but just because they wanted to enjoy the moment. But when Charles mentioned by simple sentences their future together, it never failed to make her tear up. It was never big talks, just little things that made her confident about the future. They would stay together. It was happening. That was it. No need to say more or to have grand gestures. They were two souls, designed by fate, that had managed to find their ways together. And it was all.
As promised, Charles brought her on the boat for a picnic. They were on their own, on the water, far from the land but not far enough for it to disappear completely from their sights. As they were drinking a glass of rosé, Charles looked at her weirdly and gulped.
“I want to ask you something. You can say no, I won’t take it the wrong way, I promise you.”
“Are you okay? I’ve never seen your face look this red.”
“It’s nothing, it’s just… well… Move in with me. For real, I mean. You have already the keys of the flat, you spend more time in it than in Nice, and this flat is on paper yours as well. We basically already live together but I just want to make it official, with your name alongside mine on the mailbox and all your stuff in my drawers. I want to take the next step in our relationship. Do you want that too?”
Lyanna didn’t know what to say anymore, he left her speechless. She took his hand in hers and tugged at it slightly trying to make him look at her.
“Charles…hey. I know I said that I needed my own independence and all, but it has been on my mind for while if I’m being honest.”
“So it’s a yes?”
“I need to take care of the paperwork first but it’s a yes.” She assured him.
He stood up and took her in his arms, twirling her around, making her laugh before putting her back down and kissing her passionately.
“So, we are really doing this? We really are going to live together for real?” he asked her, a part of him not believing it totally.
“We are. I’m going to bring all my stuff to your flat and I have so much that you won’t recognize the place you are currently living in.”
“Make it yours, Lya. I’m so happy.” He giggled.
This time, Charles did not help her moving out her things considering how things went wrong the last time. Instead, Lya asked a professional moving company to help her. She was not taking everything. Most of her furniture had been sold or donated to charities as she didn’t need them. Meanwhile, Charles had spent the entire day reorganizing his closet, his bathroom, and the kitchen cabinets to make some space for Lya. He was excited.  It felt official. It felt right. It felt like a new chapter in their life, one he was ready to take on.
A few days after the big move, as they were settling on the couch, Lyanna’s head on Charles’ lap as he was playing with her hair while watching the TV, images of their future together started to flow in his mind.
“I want a big house on the hills of Monaco.” He said out of nowhere, making Lyanna drop the book she was reading and look at him.
“We just finally moved in together and you already want to move out?”
“I’m not saying right now. The flat is perfect for both of us, we don’t need more space. I was talking about a few years from now.”
She straightened up and sat down, her arm behind the back of the sofa and her body turned towards Charles.
“I would love a big garden to go with the house. But somewhere peaceful, you know. So we are not bothered.”
“And the house would be an open floor, with a big living room to welcome our friends and family and so you can all gather to watch my races if you can’t come. I would put the piano at the center so we can play whenever we feel like it and it would resonate everywhere in the house. And a big kitchen so we can cook together without bumping into each other every two minutes because we lack space. And a big dining room so for Christmas we can have a big table to fit both of our families.”
“I’d say at least four bedrooms would be ideal. One for your simulator, an office for me, our room and a guest room.”
“I want our room to face the garden, or maybe we could have our own private balcony? What do you think.”
“I would love that. And I want a pool! Imagine all the parties we could organize if we had a big garden!”
“And we could have so much space for the kids, as well.”
“That would be important indeed. So they can run around and play outside. We would’ve to protect the pool then, we wouldn’t want them to get hurt.”
“Security first. What do you think about a dog? A Golden Retriever or a Colley? They love kids.”
“Going for the whole cliché of the family with the white picket fence, I see.”
“I’m a family guy, Lya.”
“I know… How many kids do you want?” she asked a little shy.
“At least two, maybe three. But only if you want, I’m fine with two. I would love to have two girls. You three would be my princesses. I would spoil them rotten. But I don’t care.”
“And what if we have two boys, then?”
“I would cherish them and teach them how to become great men. And I would love them to go karting. Even if we have girls, actually. I would love to have at least a kid with who I can share my love for racing.”
“What if they tell you they want to be in F1?”
“I’ll encourage them, I’ll help them but they will have to work hard. It’s not going to be offered to them, I want them to get there because they proved that they had what it takes, not because they would be my kid. And what if one of them would tell you that they want to become an actor?”
“Same as you. But I’ll look over every single contract they could get because I know what type of shit is written in some of them. But before, I would encourage them to have a degree, and to study. I didn’t and I regret it.”
“It’s not too late for you if you to go back to your studies, you know. I would support you.”
“Maybe one day when I’ll stop acting. For now, it’s not in my book.”
They looked at each other, smiling and happy to see that they wanted the same things in life.
“I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you, Lya.” He confessed.
The few weeks of summer break went by quickly and then it was time for Charles to go back on the tracks. Zandvoort did not go as well as Charles would have hoped, only ended up P6 after a mistake from his end. He wouldn’t have been this disappointed and angry if Max had not won his national Grand Prix, allowing him to get closer to Charles in the drivers’ championship. But then, it was Monza and he was pretty excited. There was always something special about it since it was Ferrari home Grand Prix and where Lya and him became an official couple a year ago.
It’s Lyanna who woke up Charles, the Friday before FP1 by leaving little kisses on his chest before disappearing under the duvet making him groan.
“Happy one year anniversary, baby.” She said as she went up to kiss his lips.
“Happy one year, love.” He wished her, flipping her over and starting to kiss her collarbone. “It’s early, I don’t have to leave before a while.”
“I know, I just thought that it would give us more time to celebrate before you go.”
“I promise I won’t be wasting those precious minutes.”
“I hoped you would say that.”
The Friday evening, Charles took her out in a fancy restaurant to celebrate. As they were waiting for the dessert, he took out of the bag he had carried out with him ever since they stepped out of the hotel, a rectangular form carefully wrapped and gave it to Lya. It was a photo album with pictures of them taken at different moments throughout the year they had spent together. From when they were still just friends to the last hike to La Tête de Chien they had done during the break. Beside every pictures were found little love words to remind her how loved she was.
“So you have a part of me even when I’m not there.” He had explained to her.
“I have that for you, as well.” She told him while giving him a little box.
Charles opened it and recognized immediately the horsey bracelet he wore all the time unless during races as it was often Lyanna that kept it. She had made some alliterations to it, adding the Monegasque flag and a movie clap on it beside each sides of the horse.
“I added them when you were not looking. And I thought that this bracelet could be like a tradition of ours? Like, whenever something big or important happens in our lives we can add a signification on the bracelet. I don’t know, maybe it’s stupid.”
“It’s perfect. I already loved it before but I love it even more now.”
The rest of the weekend could not have gone any better as Charles, just like the year before, won in Monza and this time when he walked on the podium, his eyes looked straight at Lyanna. He pointed at her and then at the trophy and then to her, like he wanted to tell her that this win was for her. She was so proud and happy for him. Fred who was right beside her, couldn’t help but throw one arm around her from happiness.
“He will be world championship Lyanna; I can assure you. He is going to do it.”
“I hope. I don’t want to jinx it.”
As they were coming back towards the hospitality to wait for Charles, Fred pulled her aside.
“Lyanna, I wanted to ask you something a little bit personal.”
“Yeah sure, go ahead.”
“I don’t know if she told you, but I started seeing your mom since your birthday.”
Lyanna almost spat out the water she was drinking.
“Seeing, as in dating?”
“She is not comfortable with that, considering that you date Charles and I’m well… basically his boss. I understand her, but she is a wonderful woman and I really like your mom.”
“Are you asking for… my permission?”
“I think that if she knew her daughter would be okay with it, it would help.”
“I like you Fred, I’ve no doubt that you are someone that could treat her right but… it feels weird. But… I can’t tell you no. It would be unfair. I guess, as long as you guys don’t act all lovey-dovey around me it would be fine. Does that make you my stepdad, then?”
“We’re not there yet.”
“Thank you. For letting me know and for taking care of my mom.”
When Lyanna told everything to Charles, he was not that surprised.
“I didn’t know but it’s been a while since I’ve seen Fred looking this happy. I thought that it was because of my performance but I guess I was wrong. Or at least, it’s not only because of me.”
“Isn’t it weird to you?”
“No. Fred is a good guy, don’t worry about your mom, she is in good hands.”
The next two races were not great for Charles with Max winning them and him ended up to positions he was not used anymore. The one month break between Singapore and Austin was welcomed. With Charles, they had planned a getaway of two weeks in Greece, just the two of them, away from distractions and people. They had rented a little house with a private beach.
They spent their days or in the beach and in the water, or in bed, leaving the house only when it was needed. But they didn’t care, they needed this time off away from everything before both of their schedules were starting to get busy again. With the last part of the season for Charles and the start of the Ferrari promo for Lyanna. She knew that she would not be able to come for the last races of the season beside Abu Dhabi, obviously, where she would be. No chance she was missing it.
“I’m going to miss you.” She said as they were laying in bed, Charles drawing patterns on her naked skin as she was listening to his heart beating.
“It’s just a few weeks and then I’m back home hopefully with a world championship title.”
And Lyanna believed him.

I fan myself in this most languid heat, The forest invites one to lay all bare. I hang my hood upon a rocky crag, My head exposed I bathe in fragrant air.
-Li Bai, In the Mountains on a Summer Day
~~~
"Why is it so hot?" You grit your teeth as Mikey asks the question for what feels like the tenth time.
"Perhaps because it is the middle of summer," you reply, trying your best to keep irritation out of your voice. He has no internal temperature regulation, you remind yourself. It's only mostly his fault that you're here.
"But we're in the mountains, it's supposed to be cool!"
"Not in the middle of summer."
Mikey just moans piteously, pulling his hat off his head to fan himself with it. You wipe the sweat off your brow and then pull the sunscreen out of the side pocket of your backpack.
"Here, you're gonna get sunburned. Let me." You pour some of the sunscreen in your palm and smooth it over his head. He lets out a happy chirp at the sensation and leans into your touch.
You smile at him. Perhaps suggesting a hiking date in the middle of summer and then doubling down when you warned him against it wasn't his brightest moment. But you did agree to it. Eventually. And despite the buzzing heat and Mikey's complaints, you are enjoying yourself.
It is a beautiful day. Due to the heat you've only seen a couple of other people crazy enough to be out here, so you have the area to yourself. The flowers are abundant and beautiful, as Mikey promised. And he takes your hand with a bright grin of his own as you continue towards the nearby treeline. What more could you want?
You both breathe a sigh of relief as the trail takes you into the shade of the trees. It's still hot, but definitely more manageable. You hum a little in happiness as you look around at the gorgeous scenery.
Suddenly Mikey perks up. "Do you hear that?" He hustles off, pulling you along heedless of your protests. However, as you get closer to the source of the noise, you start hustling with him. It sounds like...
"A waterfall!" Mikey crows in delight. It's a small one, tumbling over a short cliff into a round pond before heading downhill in a stream. But that doesn't detract from the beauty.
Mikey spends ten minutes taking various aesthetic pictures for his So-Shell account while you sit on a rock and watch him, grateful for the rest. Perhaps you and Mikey should go hiking more often, you are clearly out of shape.
You take off your own hat and lean back, closing your eyes as a slight breeze ruffles the trees around you. It's cooler near the water, and you can smell the earthy loam of the pond bank. The sound of Mikey's camera mixes with the insects and bird calls in a surprisingly pleasant melody.
A rustling sound that definitely isn't the trees interrupts your quiet contemplation, and you look up to find Mikey sliding his shorts off his legs.
"What are you doing??" You hiss at him while looking around frantically. The trail is within sight, someone could come by at any time!
He stares at you deadpan while he straightens up. There is nothing on display, because he is a turtle. You, ah, forgot that. You bury your face in your hands while he starts to laugh.
You hear his laughter approach, and then he starts to tug on your shirt. "Come on," he urges, "you should try it. The grass feels great!"
"Mikey! The trail is right there," you gesture towards it with one hand while the other tries to pull your shirt back down. "Someone could walk by!"
"I will hear them before they can see you. I'll give you plenty of warning, I promise!" Mikey gives you the same pout that broke your resolve and caused this date in the first place, and you groan internally. You can't resist that face and he knows it.
"You just want to see my chest," you grumble as you let go of your shirt and let him whip it off of you. Mikey grins and waggles his eyebrows as he tugs you up and towards the pond.
"Maybe. But also, the grass really does feel good." You lay down next to him at the edge of the pond. He stretches out with a happy chirp and tucks one hand under your neck.
The grass does feel good, cool but not wet. Even the blades tickling your sides feel nice, soft, rather than annoying. You watch the sun shine through the trees above you with half-lidded eyes.
You fall asleep as Mikey starts to churr.
you sat on the bench, swinging your legs back and forth as your eyes traveled across the landscape before you. you were waiting for minghao at the bottom of the mountain where he'd texted you to wait. your backpack had your camera gear in it as you hugged it closer to your chest, many people passing by you as the seconds passed slowly, paris in the rain playing loudly through your airpods, drowning the world out.
black nail-polished fingers snapping in front of your face had snapped you out of your trance as you stared up at the chinese man. you took your airpods out, placing them in their respectful spots before tucking them in your backpack. "let's go." the man urged you as you put your backpack on, following after him.
"here." he extended a paper cup towards you as you slowly grabbed it, fingers brushing against one another while you sniffed the drink. "that's why i was a bit late." he murmured, loud enough for you to hear as he slowed his pace down a bit to match yours.
you were awestruck by how he’d guessed your favourite drink, looking between the cup in your hands and the man, before your eyes settled on your footing instead, a shy smile making its way to your face. "thank you." you mumbled, seeing him nod in your peripheral.
in fact, minghao hadn't guessed your favourite drink, he simply took notice of the one you were holding at the cafe only a few days ago, and it hadn't slipped his mind since then, as well as your dimples. he also told seokmin to make up some plans so he could hitch this trip with you and try and get to know you.
he couldn't deny that you were pretty, really, really pretty and that he'd be a fool if he didn't at least hint at something. especially after that night.
“uh, also…” you trailed off, pursing your lips shyly before you continued. “thank you for the lighter…and for taking me home.”
minghao couldn't hide his shock. he thought that you were shit-faced drunk that night and you wouldn't remember a thing in the morning, but there you were, thanking him about it.
he nodded in acknowledgement, suddenly getting shy at that as he shoved his hands in his pockets and looked the other direction of you.
“i didn't think you'd remember.” he commented and you chuckled awkwardly.
you cleared your throat, glancing up at him for a brief second before you looked at your steps again. “i actually still don't remember that night. i just saw the lighter the next morning and seungkwan wouldn't stop teasing me about it every time he came over, so…”
he nodded in acknowledgement, doing his best to his disappointment and focus on the flight of stairs ahead instead.
only a few moments later, you called out to the man again, making him halt in his movements this time as he turned to you. "why, uh, did you pick this place?" there was a slight pant between your words as you urged yourself up the mountain, and it had minghao rethinking his choices and debating whether he should look for somewhere else. but it was already too late.
"don't you and mingyu do this?" he questioned. mingyu did certainly tell him you preferred to photograph natural sceneries than people photography, that's why you and mingyu would spend the whole day together for it, moving almost all across the city.
"we've never been hiking before, really. we usually go to a park, have lunch, then move around in his car." you'd explained, keeping your eyes ahead to watch the stairs and not trip on one.
minghao's lips puckered in thought before he turned to you. "we're basically doing the same thing, except this is healthier and would be more enjoyable." his head turned to the front again, missing the way you rolled your eyes. stairs were your worst enemy, so you were certainly unhappy with this, however, you still missed the slight pants between his words. damn mingyu, he was the one who recommended hiking to him.
it was a quiet hike between the two of you, reaching atop once the orange hues came into view and the sunset had just started. you'd found a log, quickly rushing to it and sitting down with an exasperated sigh at the work-out you'd just done. you'd unfortunately have to skip leg day with mingyu and joshua this week, which would obviously be so, so upsetting to you.
you put your backpack next to you, crossing your arms and still managing your breathing while minghao took a seat next to you, getting out a sketch instead of the camera you'd expected. "what's this?"
"a sketch."
"no shit, sherlock. i meant where's your camera? isn't this for the newspaper?" you frowned, staring at the sketch before finally meeting minghao's eyes, and he didn't look happy with you.
he sighed, shaking his head before getting his pencil case out. "it's for a project i have. seokmin and mingyu are the photographers, i'm the artist.”
"oh? i didn't know that." you murmured, nodding as you prepared your things.
“you seem to not know a lot.”
your curious gaze dropped as you felt your stomach drop as well, nodding to yourself with a quiet chuckle before you picked your backpack up with your camera in hand and walked away from the man silently, leaving him to his thoughts and drawings while you started doing your and mingyu's jobs combined, photographing people while capturing the beautiful greenery sights and the sunset as you went.
you'd almost forgotten about minghao by the time you were done, sitting down on the grass, your camera in your lap before you'd gotten a text from joshua, asking when you'd be home. you'd replied that you'd be there soon, and he ended the chat with a take care.
"hey."
looking up, you found minghao looming over you, a cup in a hand, and your things in the other with a paper bag. you only hummed in acknowledgement as you resumed surfing through the pictures you took that day. "i got you apple juice."
that had you giving him his full attention as you placed your camera in your lap while he dropped down next to you with a low grunt. "how'd you know i like apple juice?"
"lucky guess." he hummed, handing you the paper bag while he settled your things between the two of you, resting back on his hand while his legs were folded in front of him. you'd already opened the pack and had almost finished it while he got comfortable. "sorry if i was a bit mean earlier."
you, again, hummed in acknowledgement as minghao pursed his lips, unknowing of how he should react now. "is that a sign of forgiveness or is this you dismissing me?"
and then you shrugged. and minghao almost groaned aloud at that. "well, i'm sorry, again, for being mean and if-hey, where you going?"
you looked down at the man as you hoisted your bag over your shoulder. "my brother wants me home." you'd replied curtly, turning around to start your way down the mountain before you paused, turning to face the man with a tight smile that had your dimples awkwardly popping. "thank you for the juice...and the drink...and the hike. bye."
and you'd left the man like that. and minghao, in all his years he'd spent in this foreign country, had never been left this stunned and speechless, watching your retreating back as you placed your earbuds in your ears and drowned out the world.
    The planning of the vacation had been fun for Miles, but none of it felt real until the night before they were set to leave, when Mansk arrived, bringing with him all the last minute supplies they’d need. He packed his bags in a state of disbelief, stowing them by the front door so they could leave first thing in the morning. Nerves twisted his stomach into knots, making it impossible to sleep that night. By four am he gave up trying, knowing that his father was already awake.
    Sure enough Pa was outside sipping his coffee. He turned at the sound of the door closing giving his son a wry smile. Miles stood by his side, breathing in the crisp morning air, taking in his surroundings. Pa pat him on the back. “Nervous to travel?” Miles nodded. “Don’t be. I’ll be with y’a the entire time. And who knows. If everything goes smoothly, maybe we can do this again sometime.”
    That final sentence, with everything it implied, made Miles inwardly flinch. His entire future hinged on this trip going well. If it didn’t… “Pa…” Miles hated how timid his voice sounded. His father’s smile wavered, eyes filling with concern. “I…I can’t believe we’re really doing this.”
    Pa’s features softened, “I know son. It’s been a long time since we’ve been anywhere but here,” Miles nodded again, “that can be mighty overwhelmin’.”
    “Yeah,” he gasped, feeling slightly relieved from Pa’s understanding.
     His father laid a hand on his shoulder, getting into Miles' line of sight to look him directly in the eye. “We can call this whole thing off if you're not ready.”
    He took a deep breath to steady himself, “No. I want us to go. I’ve been so excited for this trip Pa. We’ve been plannin’ it for weeks and now…”
    “Now we actually gotta do it.”
    “Yeah.” It was a lot to take in after so many years of isolation. It was intimidating, frightening, and exhilarating all at once. The prospect made a small smile tug at Miles’ lips. His father didn’t miss his son’s growing confidence, grinning as he pat his son on the back.
   “There’s my boy. You're gonna do just fine. You’ve come such a long way and I am so incredibly proud of you.” Miles felt like he was glowing from the praise.
   Calmed by his father’s words the pair made their way inside to eat a hearty breakfast before they left. Then Miles got dressed in his sturdiest clothes, with his best hiking boots, ready to leave. “Before we go Junior.” Pa said. Without further elaboration he positioned his son in front of the door, his backpack at his feet.“Smile.” Miles couldn’t contain his excitement now, positively beaming as Pa snapped a picture of him with their old polaroid camera. When the picture developed Pa chuckled to himself, pleased with the result. “That’s a keeper,” he said, stuffing it into his wallet.
   Miles strapped on his backpack ready to leave but his father held up a hand. “One more thing before we go.” Pa got down on the ground, rolling up the hem of his son’s pant leg exposing the ankle monitor underneath. He smoothly unlocked it with one hand, grabbing Miles’ right wrist with the other as soon as it was off. From his pocket he pulled out a thick black wrist watch, securing it to his son's arm without a word of explanation. “Alright let’s hit it.”
Unrecognisable Part 17
I stretched out my body on the side of the road in the midday sun. My entire body was aching after hours of hiking through farmland then along the side of a very empty road. Jake thankfully managed to wave down the first vehicle we saw. It was a delivery van, but given it was the first vehicle we had seen, we were desperate. I waited on the forest's edge as Jake was negotiating with the driver for a ride.
“Well, he can’t get us all the way to the border, but he can at least get us to the next town,” Jake sighed as he walked over to me.
“It’s better than nothing?” I shrugged.
Jake nodded and opened the back of the van. I peered in and noticed it was pretty much empty anyway. Jake climbed in first and sat down on the floor, holding his backpack in front of him. I got in and closed the doors behind me and sat down next to him. He put his arm around my shoulders and gave me a quick squeeze before pulling out his laptop from his backpack.
The driver turned and glanced back at us before driving off. He gave me a weird vibe, but if Jake felt he was ok, then he must’ve been. Honestly, if some serial killer had picked us up, I'd probably still be more terrified of Jake. I imagined him putting the likes of Jack the Ripper in his place, which made me giggle. It made me think what would’ve happened if he had found the Man Without a Face in those mines. Well, I guess the question really was, did Jake become the unhinged man he was today because of what happened, or was he always like that? Did it awaken something that was dormant underneath? I couldn’t help but wonder if he had been looking forward to the chance to take on the legend, and saving Hannah and Richy was just his excuse to fight him one-on-one. He never got that chance though; the legend was just smoke and mirrors. Did that just add to his frustration, that there was no actual monster to fight?
My attention was drawn back to Jake’s laptop as he was opening several windows. “What are you doing?” I whispered.
“Just checking on a few things,” he assured me.
“Did your contact cross us?” I questioned.
Jake paused, then turned to me, “I don’t think so. Things would have gone much more differently if it was a set up. Still, he’s not getting the rest of the money.”
Several maps of the area loaded including a standard street map showing our current location still fifteen minutes from the next town center. One of the maps was a topography map. Another showed the border crossings and defences. The last one showed the rail lines in the area and their status, including the one that currently had an obstruction on it. He spent a lot time going through the different maps and working out the best course of action.
“They’re going to make things more difficult for our trip,” he mumbled.
“Are you sure we should be traveling by road?” I asked.
He tilted his head back and forth, “We could try to wait it out, but that would mean we don’t get there in time.”
“Or? You have another idea?” I pushed.
“If not by land then by sea?” he joked. “Except in this case by river.”
“How is that any safer?” I queried.
“Then by air!” he exclaimed.
“Uhh, exactly how?” I was struggling to keep up with him.
“We hang glide across! Look, we can jump from this peak here,” he pointed to the topographical map.
“Have you ever hang glided before?” I narrowed my eyes in suspicion.
“No, but how hard can it be?” he shrugged.
I knew it, he had no idea how to do it. “Wait, what’s here?” I gestured to the middle of the forest.
“Trees?” he responded innocently.
“And? What security is there?” I pushed.
Jake swapped back to the border crossing map, “A fence.”
“Can’t we just go over it?” I suggested.
“Hmm, it will likely have barbed wire, but we could just make our own way through. The only problem is if there are cameras,” he explained.
“Can’t you hack those?” I said quietly.
“Exactly what do you think I do? I don’t just wave my laptop at things and say a magic spell,” he rolled his eyes.
“Ok, fine, we’ll just have to do what my people do back home with speed cameras,” I mused. “We shoot them.”
“You realise that’s as effective as being seen, right?” he frowned.
“Realistically could they get to us in time before we’re through?” I questioned.
“Probably not. That forest is rather dense. No off-roaders can get through,” he admitted.
“Well, I think this is better than hang gliding,” I teased.
“A helicopter could still track us moving through the forest,” he argued. “They could have people waiting for us on the other side.”
“I thought we were safe as long as we crossed the border,” I frowned.
“The southern border, not the eastern border,” he sighed. “Unless…”
“Unless what?” I leaned forwards to look at him directly.
“How much do you trust me?” he smirked.
“That sounds like famous last words,” I narrowed my eyes.
“Not even a little?” he pouted. “It’s not like I lost our clothes.”
“What are-,” I began to say before the realisation hit me. “Oh fuck.” Of course, I left our bag at my seat on the train.
“And that’s why I carry the computer,” he mocked.
“What am I going to do? Look at my pants!” I gritted my teeth as I gestured to my bloodied pants.
“Well I don’t mind if you don’t wear any,” he teased.
“Ok so we have to go shopping when we reach the town,” I insisted.
“Uh, you can’t. Not looking like that,” he frowned.
“But we have no spare clothes!” I exclaimed.
He groaned, “Fine, we find a thrift store. In and out quickly, ok?”
“Can I pick out your clothes?” I mused.
“No,” he answered simply.
“Why not?” it was my turn to pout.
“Plain, black clothes will do me just fine,” he glared.
“So boring,” I stuck my tongue out at him.
Jake leaned over to bite my tongue, but I pulled it back before he could. He smiled and sat back against the van again.
“I forgot to mention it earlier, but nice work on the message,” he grinned.
I blushed, “Thank you. I was worried you might not have heard it.”
“No, I heard it. Clear as day,” he nodded. “You just didn’t give me a lot of time.”
“The next train wasn’t going to be for another three hours,” I explained.
“No, it had to be that one,” he agreed. “I almost didn’t make the train though.”
“What happened?” I frowned.
“I jumped,” he laughed.
“Wait, what? How?” I asked in disbelief.
“If I told you, you’d probably commit me,” he smiled.
“For being suicidal, I definitely will!” I slapped his arm.
He grabbed my hand and held it, “I had it under control. It wasn’t the first time I jumped on a train and it wasn’t even at speed.”
“Oh my God, I can’t even... ugh!” I shook my head and looked away.
He laughed, then leant over to whisper in my ear, “Remember the lengths I will go to get to you. Nothing can keep me from you anymore.”
“And if I run?” I asked suggestively.
“I will find you, pin you down and remind you who you belong to,” he responded huskily in my ear.
My body shuddered as a chill ran down my spine. The urge to provoke him was too great, but as our gracious driver glanced over his shoulder, I was reminded that we weren’t alone. It was going to have to wait. It didn't stop Jake from putting a hand on my leg and rubbing my inner thigh teasingly.
“I haven't forgotten what you said last night. Know that my plans for you haven’t changed and I intend to act upon them as soon as I can,” he spoke quietly, but dominantly in my ear.
Suddenly the van started slowly down to a stop, but it was too soon to be at the town. Jake pushed his laptop aside and moved up to a crouching position to look past the front seats. He said something to the driver and the driver said something back, but I couldn’t hear over the sound of the engine.
Jake turned back to me with a look of annoyance, “There’s a checkpoint ahead.”
“We should get out then. Before they search the vehicle,” I thought out loud.
“No, it’s too obvious,” he shook his head.
Jake packed his laptop away, then removed his hoodie and his mask. There was a baseball cap tucked away behind the driver’s seat that he took out. After giving it quick shake he put it on.
“I am going to sit up front, ok? You do your best to make that leg look injured. If anyone asks you, we were hiking in the woods when you fell and since you couldn’t walk on your leg, we got a lift to get you to hospital. Remember your new identity?” Jake explained as he ripped a section his shirt to tie the fabric around my shin.
“Emily Wagner,” I confirmed.
“You’re the same age as you are now, only born a month later. We've been together for five years, married for two. No kids yet, but we’re trying,” he continued.
“Is that last part necessary?” I laughed.
“Ok, maybe just me,” he smirked impishly. “We're celebrating our anniversary which is why we’re away from home.”
“We have a golden retriever back home. His name is Lucky,” I added. Jake looked at me confused. “If you can add your fantasy, so can I,” I teased.
“Why is he named Lucky?” he went along with it.
“Because we found him in a well,” I humoured.
“If you say so,” he smiled.
“Uh, we don’t have rings,” I pointed out. “It'll be a little obvious.”
“Keep your hand in your pocket,” he said as he got up to move to the front. “Don’t worry, I've got this.”
“Again with the famous last words,” I mumbled to myself.
Surely this time wouldn’t end in a shoot out. Right? Right!?
Yes! Switching to barefoot shoes 2 years ago was the best decision I could have made, and I won't go back. I've noticed that not only do my feet ache a lot less after a day of hiking, but my back doesn't get sore after standing for long periods and my calves are never tight. Have you tried lightweight gaiters to protect your ankles? Have a good day!
Thank you!
I have heard recommendation of wearing gaiters, just a few issues for me:
I like to get out of the house ASAP while I'm still in the mood to hike, and it's hard to find a bunch of different stuff to put on. By the time I find the things categorized in 10 different places, I've lost motivation. When I get my own place I'm gonna make it ADHD-friendly and put all my hiking gear/camera/backpack/snacks etc in one spot. Also why I haven't been in a habit of wearing sunscreen, because every extra step is a barrier to me. Not having enough money for my own place literally affects so many aspects of my life even down to "why I don't wear gaiters" and it sounds stupid but that's just how it is. I'm not supposed to install hooks here and just recently got access to more than three mini drawers, I'm so frustrated haha
Another thing is I'm not sure how gaiters work if I don't wear long pants? It's supposed to be 99 today so I'm definitely not wearing pants!
But let's see how well these seed-proof socks work!
Susie Lake - Part 3
Tumblr media
Last week on Wednesday, we went on another day hike, this time up to Half Moon Lake. On the way, we got a nice view of Susie Lake from a higher elevation.
When we got back to camp that afternoon, I did my last fishing of the trip, and caught two nice brook trout. The wind really whipped up in the evening to the point we estimated a steady 40 - 45 mph with gusts stronger than that. We turned in early because of the cold and wind, but it was tough to sleep when the whole tent kept shaking violently with every gust.
On Thursday, things settled down and we went on a final day hike to Gilmore Lake. In the afternoon back at Susie I just sat and took in the views instead of doing any more fishing. I wish it was a requirement for senators, congressmen, and others in government to spend time in beautiful places like this. Maybe there would be a little more acceptance of measures to preserve public lands and to protect the environment.
It was our last night in the wilderness and it was calm and reasonably warm so we stayed up for a while stargazing and attempting to get some good pictures of the sky. I managed to get the photo below of Sagittarius and the Milky Way, including the very center of our galaxy, despite fumbling with my camera controls in the dark.
I'd rate this backpacking trip as one of my best.
I don’t know about you - but this is 2022
We moved. I studied Spanish. I got sober curious. I put color back in my hair (purple). I screamed IM NOT OKAY when I saw MCR @ The Forum and also when they did it for karaoke at my office end of year party. I did a lot of "hurry up" hikes in the morning - at Wildwood and Wisdom Tree. I kind of love that I can see Wisdom tree from my place. Sometimes on a cloudy day I show Desmond and say, "If mama was hiking right now, I'd hike right into a cloud!" Never underestimate your book club. Not only did my witches of echo park assemble like the gd avengers after I got asked for a divorce, I also have the promise of some new friendships in my 2nd book club. I really look forward to digging into a good book attached  the end of a day, and my favorite book of 2022 was Pet by Akwaeke Emezi.
I spent a good chunk of time (while driving?) digging to identity but some of it made me angry and some of it made me sad so I refocused on meditation and philosophy a bit. I've felt ambivalent about my body - recognizing I've been a jerk to it for many years despite its strength, despite all it did for me. I am not in the best shape of my life but I've been working on getting my mind in fighting form as a priority. It actually has a heavier workload than my body. I'm also hyperaware that I'm a 24/7 role model. My attitude toward food, toward movement, toward myself is perpetually radiating outward onto Desmond's malleable mind.
Tumblr media
I saw Paramore at the Belasco and just wanted to BE Hayley Williams. I screamed "Brick by Boring Brick" at the top of my lungs. I put in my ticket request for their 2023 tour. Remember when I saw them at the (now dead) Knitting Factory? And also at some random phone store? I also crowdsurfed out of one of their pits with like thousands of dollars of camera equipment in my backpack. Good times.
I realized Lorde may have quietly outranked so many other artists, personally. I interviewed her in 2013 and saw her live and loved her then, but I felt a few of her songs very deeply this year, and wish I would've seen her on tour. Fortunately, she's not a legacy artist (yet) and her touring future is bright.
Tumblr media
I think. It felt really good to be a part of a few group chats. Thank you to my bestie for inviting me. It's a small thing but it made me laugh a bunch and made me think and it felt so much better than throwing thoughts and questions into the abyss that has become Twitter and FB. Am I unintentionally promoting Mastodon here? IDK.
I haven't had any themed birthday parties in years, and I do miss it. The opportunity to dress up (even weirdly) the curation of the theme and its photobooth and party favors.... but most of all, the warranted request that all my favorite people gather in one place. In my 2022 state of mind, the level of connection I could have with each friend in a 4-hour window while probably drinking... with the COVID precautions, not entirely worth it. But  I would love to hike with you, talk books with you, get coffee with you, watch Wednesday with you, go to Emo Nite with you, make fancy popcorn with you, spill our guts, find our flow, laugh cry, write and talk about it, share a meal, throw some axes, share some space.
