How long has Paw Borough been in development?

Paw Borough has been in development for over a year. We started initial concept design in early 2021!

Will Paw Borough be free to play?

Paw Borough will be free to play after the closed Beta, with premium currency bought with real money; however, premium currency will also be obtainable through regular gameplay.

When will Paw Borough be playable?

As long as we reach our funding goal for Kickstarter, our roadmap puts public launch in 2024. We predict the closed beta will release late 2023 - early 2024. We will keep backers updated if there are any hiccups that may compromise this timeline.

Where do I download Paw Borough?

Paw Borough will be a browser game free to access from your web browser, and we plan to convert it to a mobile app for the best mobile accessibility in the future, but it is not currently playable. Our demo (cat creator) is available for everyone to test a key functionality for the game!

Will Paw Borough be mobile friendly?

Yes. While we would like to convert the game into an app to better accommodate mobile users, the website itself will be playable on mobile.

When is the Kickstarter?

The Kickstarter will run from October 5th at midnight EST to November 5th at midnight EST. Here is a link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tbpt/paw-borough-the-feline-virtual-browser-rpg

Can I back the Kickstarter without a card?

As far as we know, Kickstarter does not allow payment without a card. If you're very anxious to back it, we recommend sending the money needed to a trusted friend or family member to back it for you, under your own e-mail address.

Will there be more breeds/genes/colors?

Yes. We intend for a color wheel expansion, which will bring our color total to 151, but no more colors beyond that. Paw Borough will have 20 breeds in its site's lifetime, counting both "Domestic" and "Mystic" breeds. We intend to add new genes and eye types to the game indefinitely.

Can cats die?

No. While we will have a feature to allow players to "retire" cats, which will give players a small payout, cats will not die due to inactivity. Feeding your cats is an incentive for site bonuses, but never a punishment.

Is there a cap on how much regular currency a player can obtain every day?

Players will be able to obtain a daily amount of currency through minigames, daily site activities, and the site's future battle system. After the cap has been reached, site activities and battling will give players items instead (daily activities will function similarly to Nook Miles from Animal Crossing New Horizons.)

Additionally, players can sell items in their Inventory back to the site, or receive a payout for "retiring" cats, neither of which will have a cap. The daily currency cap is to prevent inflation in the site's economy.

Can players cancel unwanted nests?

There will be an item for players to cancel an unwanted nest. Cats can also be made infertile with an item, and have the effect reversed. This secondary function exists for the purpose of roleplay.

Will the Kickstarter items be obtainable after the Kickstarter?

No. They are exclusive to the Kickstarter. If you are looking to obtain any after the campaign, you will need to trade with another player. Moontails and Longhairs will still be obtainable through breeding and trade, but you will not be able to obtain a Luna Stone to "breed change" a cat into a Moontail or Longhair without trading.

Can I get more than just 2 Luna Stones?

Yes, we have Luna Stones among other perks available as add-ons on the Kickstarter. Luna Stones as an add-on are $30 each, or $35 for two.

How will I receive my beta key and Kickstarter rewards?

Two codes will be sent to your email, one for the beta key and one for your rewards. You will be permitted to use the rewards code twice; once during the Beta, and once again after public launch.

Can Domestic Breeds be turned into Mystic Breeds (and vice versa)?

Yes, with caveats. Any breed may be changed into another breed with conversion. We will release a chart to allow for more comprehension of our specific breed-change system.

Can Domestic and Mystic Breeds produce offspring?

Yes. All Paw Borough Breeds can breed with one another, with a chance of one or the other Breed being passed down to the offspring, not hybrids.

Will some Breeds/Genes/Colors be more rare than others?

Breeds and Genes will have rarities. Offspring have an equal chance of being any color between two parents' colors on the color wheel for each gene. Additionally, cats with previous lineage have a chance to pass on their parents' color ranges to their offspring.

If I miss story events, how can I catch up?

Story events will be summarized for site-wide consumption in the site library. We also plan to turn the site story into fictional reading.

Can two or more people share an account?

No. However, multiple people under one internet connection may have their own accounts. Paw Borough does not wish to be liable nor responsible for disputes between two owners of the same account.

Can system members have individual accounts?

Separate members of a system are welcome to each have their own account, but will each need their own beta key if they wish to play closed beta. Furthermore, evidence of exploitation, such as the transfer of daily bonuses, which would create an unfair advantage to those not in a system, will result in account termination.

Can you change your Borough after choosing one at signup?

Yes. Each member is given a free change and then charged currency thereafter. Changing Boroughs will require a month-long cooldown.

Can you change your username? Will multiple people be allowed to have the same username?

Usernames are limited to 1 per user, and all users will get a free username change. However, changing thereafter will require currency.

How much can you customize your two Founder cats?

New players will be allowed to choose Overcoat, Undercoat, and Accent colors, as well as Overcoat and Undercoat genes for both of their Founders. The Accent gene is Basic at the start. Players can also choose the Breeds of their Founders from Shorthair, Snowfoot, and Ragdoll.

Will Players be able to sell their art through the site?

Yes! However, players will only be able to sell their art for site currency when using site facilities for sales. This is to prevent liability concerns. However, players are welcome and encouraged to facilitate their own real-world currency sales in the forums.

How will data wipes happen during the beta?

Following the conclusion of the closed beta, partial data will be wiped. Players will have their cats and currency erased, but will keep their accounts, IDs, and usernames. If a player purchases any premium currency during closed beta, the accumulation of these purchases will be liquidated and carried over into launch!

What will happen to the premium currency I bought with real money during the data wipe?

Purchased currency will be given back to players after the wipe, and any items purchased with premium currency will be liquidated back into the accumulation of the purchased currency. Premium currency obtained through "free to play" means will be wiped, however.

Is there a limit to how many Beta Testers there will be?

No, the Beta tester tier is an unlimited tier. However, there are two "Early Bird" tiers that allow backers to play the game three days early, limited to 100 each. Backers who want to reserve a low ID number or specific username should aim to purchase an Early Bird tier.

Can I use a cat I made in Paw Borough as an original character/purchase commissioned art of the character?

Yes, as long as Paw Borough art and original species are credited back to pawborough.net, and as long as the project the characters are used in is not commercial.

Will kits be able to wear accessories?

We would really like to have this option! On our Kickstarter, if the $90,000 stretch goal for kits to wear accessories is reached, then yes! This is an expensive endeavor and must be committed to at the start. Unless we can fund this feature within this campaign, we will NOT be able to implement accessories for kits later on.

If this goal is not funded, we will scrap this idea entirely. However, kits will be able to equip pelts and partials regardless of if the stretch goal is met.

How will players obtain "Generation 1" cats?

An item called an incense will be available, which can attract a cat (Shorthair, Snowfoot, or Ragdoll) with random colors and no previous lineage.

How old do you have to be to play Paw Borough?

Players must be 13 years of age or older to sign up. If a player lives in the European Economic Area, they must be 16 years or older to play. Regarding content, we are allowing tagged description and depiction of death, violence, and pg13 themes, but we are not allowing any mention of sexual proclivity or any 18+ imagery. Swearing is currently disallowed.

How will Paw Borough prevent inbreeding regarding the cats?

Related cats under 5 generations apart will not be able to breed.

Is Paw Borough accepting artist applications?

Paw Borough is always taking applications for decor, accessory, gene, and backdrop artists. You must be able to replicate and follow the style we have currently cultivated. You must also be able to deliver your files in PSD format. Please send your resume and what types of assets you would like to work on to [email protected].

Is Paw Borough accepting developer applications?

Yes. Please send your resume and a breakdown of your skills to [email protected].

Why only 20 breeds? How will the game remain interesting?

We believe the model of indefinite breeds and indefinite accessory/clothing for said indefinite breeds is a faulty one which grows into uncontrollable, insurmountable, costly hurdles for small art teams the longer a site is running and in effort to keep a userbase happy. We could easily dig holes for ourselves with breeds taking years and years of cost and production with no guarantee of release, and every gene or accesory asset we produce grows the cost and time of the next new breed until it's a monster of a problem.

We are not insisting that a draw of our game be the indefinite release of breeds. In that way, we differ from the goal of other sites. Our candid assertion is to be sure not to string along players who are joining with the express intention of seeing new breeds. Rather we'd like our unique mechanics and the allowance of a large variety for users to create and experiment with in a huge, virtual sandbox, to be our goal. Twenty breeds, with full functionality, is a large number with significant variety, and one we hope users will have fun creating with!

Do Kickstarter rewards stack (am I getting 2 Luna Stones or 10 with my Monarch Tier)?

No, items do not stack over previous tiers. Backers can receive up to 2 Luna stones before add-ons. The reward chart available on the campaign outlines exactly every item you will receive with a tier.

How much earlier do Early Bird tier codes get into the Beta?

Three days!

Can you change something about your art direction?

Thank you for your feedback. There is an amount of subjectivity to art and taste, and unfortunately we can only do so much before accepting that an artistic choice will not please everyone. If you do not enjoy the art direction, that is completely within your right! But please understand that we are, in the end, making the game with aspects we enjoy, and this will include an amount of subjectivity in style.

Will there be events during the game?

Yes! We plan for there to be monthly events, including Borough-specific holidays. Some events will be bigger than others and some smaller.

Will new colors be added to the demo?

Once the Kickstarter is over to make sure we have the funds, yes! We plan for a “gene overhaul” which will clean and update all the genes.

Is Paw Borough done through volunteer work? Can I volunteer?

Nope! All of our coders and artists are paid for their labor, which is why costs are so high. We will not be accepting any volunteer work.

Will you have feathers behind the ear as an accessory?

No. We are aware of the disrespectful connotations of the accessory to Indigenous cultures, especially within the Warrior Cats community, and do not intend to contribute to this. Thank you for your concern!

Will I be able to attach tags to my cats? Such as #kit?

Yes, and there will be a search and filtration system for these tags.

How will I receive my Kickstarter rewards?

You will receive an e-mail with a code after the Kickstarter.

Will I lose my Kickstarter rewards after a Beta wipe?

No. You can redeem the code twice; once during the Beta, and again during public release.

What do I lose during a data wipe?

You will lose all of your cats, items, and currency. Any premium currency you bought directly from the site with real money will be reimbursed to your accounts. Premium currency gained through free to play means will not be reimbursed. You will keep your ID number, username, and account details.

Is the alpha open? Can I join?

Our Alpha test is a closed test, sorry!

Will multiple cats be able to have the same Companion?

This isn't in our current plans, as it may disrupt the functionality of the Faunapedia, but we may look to see how we can make it possible. For now, the answer is no.

Can we still pledge to the Kickstarter after it's fully funded?

Yes! We have stretch goals up to a total of $130,000 yet to meet.

Will cats ever be too old to breed?

Paw Borough cats have eternal lifespans and breeding functionality. If you wish to remove a cat from your page, you can "Retire" it for a small payout.

Will there be a safe way to exchange premium currency (Moonstones) for regular currency (Sunstones) with other players?

We plan to have a way for players to exchange Moonstones for Sunstones directly on the site, but we will consider a way to facilitate trades between players the other way around!

Will Luna Stones be tradeable or will they be locked to your account?

Luna stones will not be locked to your account and can be traded to other players.

Will the site have achievements?

Yes!

Am I allowed to have a "side" account?

No. As outlined in our TOS, each user is allowed only one account.

Will there be side/minigames?

Yes!

Can all Kickstarter tiers have add-ons?

Yes!

Are Moontail wings randomly chosen when using a Luna Stone on a cat? What about when you breed a Moontail?

Yes. There will be in-game items to change a Moontail's wings. When breeding two cats, the wing type of the parent will be passed down to the kit.

Will there be a way to make my cat stay a kit forever?

Yes, we plan to have an item to make your cat permanently a kit.

Will colors in the Color Expansion be available for Founders?

Yes, all 151 colors will be available for your starter cats!

What is the character limit on usernames?

As of now, we're intending for usernames to be able to be a single character, but that may change depending on coding difficulties, so we are not promising any number at this point. Our upper bounds limit will be 18 characters, and players can use letters (including accented letters), numbers, and dashes (-) in their usernames.

Will I get refunded for the extra shipping costs?

Yes.

Will I get my account banned if a housemate and I both play Paw Borough, and you recognize the same IP address?

If we suspect multi-accounting, we intend to communicate with players instead of resorting to immediate termination, and we will not question or ban any accounts that share an IP address without probable cause (i.e., egregious examples of transfer of daily items/currency).

What's the difference between an Accessory and Decor item?

Accessory items are fitted to a cat and have separate illustrations for each breed and pose; think clothing. Decor items are single illustrations that can be moved around a scene; think furniture.

Will there be a breakdown of how many of each item was bought?

Yes, we will be releasing population reports!

Does the Monarch tier include both the Opal and Onyx tiers?

Yes!

Are we allowed to trade art for beta keys with other users?

Yes.

How long will the Kickstarter run?

One month! It ends on November 5th at 12 am EST.

Can you add a nonbinary/third gender pose to the cats?

Due to the mechanic of breeding, we cannot turn the venus and mars symbols into a nonbinary option, as this would confuse the mechanic. However! We are adamant in insisting that this mechanic be completely divorced from gender, and be isolated solely to breeding, and you are more than welcome to insist your cat nonbinary and enforce any pronouns of your choosing.

Could you add a pronouns section for a cat's page?

We've discussed this, and what we want to avoid is a requirement for a person to choose their cat's pronouns. We feel the user should get to choose if they want to display such information, and not be forced to. We will consider if there could be a section that is choosable to add, but we welcome our users to display pronouns in the biography of a cat!

Are there any plans for a battling system for cats?

Yes, including PVP. We are avoiding giving out too many details at the moment as the system is still in development.

Will you have a suggestions page?

Yes, once the beta opens.

Will there be a way to change a cat's eye type?

Yes. We have several items planned for this feature.

How many accounts will be reserved for staff use?

We are reserving 4 head staff accounts, and 7 Borough accounts before the Beta. Otherwise, ID numbers for users will be assigned in order of signup.

Can players terminate their account?

Yes. When you terminate your account, you will have a 14-day window to re-activate it. After that time expires, your account will be terminated, cats retired, items deleted, with your username changed to free up the name for other users. (I.E. "Blue" deleting on May 31st, 2025 would become Blue-05312022.)

What timezone will Paw Borough be in?

EST!

What will I receive with my Kickstarter tier?

This chart shown below outlines every item you will be receiving when you back a tier. Everything outlined in a tier is the exact amount you will be receiving!

Is there a list of add-ons available?

Is offsite trading allowed?

Yes, but only to sites that own the rights to the property and assets they are using (i.e., not Pokefarm). Additionally, be sure to familiarize yourself with the TOS of the website you are trading with; some websites, like Flight Rising and Dappervolk, do not allow off-site trading with games in beta.

Can we change a cat's birth Borough/eye color?

No, this is not an option at this time.

To what extent do you allow violence?

We are allowing a more lenient amount of violence than on other sites, but we are implementing a mandatory tagging system, meaning if you choose to depict blood or gore, you must tag it. Our TOS will reflect these rules during beta and at launch. Furthermore, photorealistic or real gore will not be allowed under any circumstance. But we are aware of the content from which our community has been fostered, and none of us want to staunchly limit it. Nor do we want to be vague and wishy-washy. So we will be outlining these terms explicitly. If you want to share written or drawn mild bloody art in one of our spaces, you are free to do so so long as you tag or censor it.

What meats are disallowed for recipes and cat consumption?

We are currently disallowing any meat which corresponds to the exact species of inspiration for mythic breeds, alongside any and all meat from a feline. The key difference here: beef is not allowed due to Bovines, but this does not exclude all hoofed animals! Goats, for example, are allowed! Venison, due to Prancers, is also disallowed. In a similar vein, a generalized bug-cat or fish-cat does not exclude these animal families from being acceptable meat! If a backer designing a recipe suggests meat which would directly clash with a breed we have planned, we will say so!

"My stream looks bad."

This is a pretty common issue that creators face and it all stems from one common misconception: 1080p doesn't mean quality.

The above video is in fact 1080p, but as you can see there's definitely something wrong about it. Here's that exact same freezeframe but at 480p:

So what's happening here? Bitrates.

A Crash Course Through Video Compression

Computer video has historically been a really hard problem to solve. Computers used to be slow (Like, really slow). Computer scientists (read: nerds) figured out that the human eye is bad and have developed techniques that abuse this fact.

Dithering tricks your eye into "seeing" more colors than are actually present. Here's a monotone (two colors!) that appears to also have shades of grey even though there aren't any:

Pretty cool, eh? By using clever placement of the black dots an entire range of grays emerge even though there aren't any.

You can even throw out little bits of detail to save space and the eye will be none the wiser. These are the core principles behind video compression.

Why do we even need to compress video anyways?

The short answer: internet speeds still aren't fast enough. The long answer: distribution costs.

If you are a video site, such as Twitch or YouTube, it is in your best interests to save as much money as possible for every live stream. So, every platform places limits on bitrate.

Okay, get to the point already. What is bitrate and how do I get my stream to look good?

Video compression usually has two modes: constant bitrate (CBR), and variable bitrate (VBR).

For regular video recordings it's usually recommended you use variable bitrate (note that CRF/CQ is a form of variable bitrate). This allows you to save space where you can but increase usage where it's necessary to help maintain visual quality.

But for live-streaming you use constant bitrate (the reason is due to how networks actually operate and how celluar/mobile networks handle streaming. It's complicated). With CBR, you tell the encoder that you want the result to always be at X bits per second regardless of the resulting quality (good or bad). So that means that during moments of low movement (in game, in an IRL setting, or even on your desktop) the encoder doesn't have to work nearly as hard to fit the current frame into the allotted rate. During high movement moments the encoder has to work extra hard to find those visual shortcuts — such as dithering, detail removal, or macroblocks (shudders) — to keep everything within bounds.

Obviously, removing detail will hurt the quality of an image. And doing that repeatedly will result in that reduced image quality you saw in the first 1080p screenshot. For that screenshot, I encoded the video at 500kbps, which is obviously way too low (I did that for for clickbait). For the 480p screenshot I encoded it using a VBR technique called Constant Quality. The size difference between those two files paints a better picture: the 480p version is 12x larger than the 1080p version despite 1080p having 8x as many pixels as 480p.

Alright, so what do you recommend I use?

Well factors like resolution, framerate, your internet, and your computer's hardware all play a role in determining what's best for you.

Here's a table bitrates for resolution and framerate.

Just note that your internet upload speed needs to be large enough for that bitrate AND whatever else you may use the internet for at the same time.

Youth and young adults would absolutely not spend as much time on computers and phones if we had interesting and engaging alternatives for them to go hang out with their friends and others.

Older generations love to complain that young people spend too much time on technology (that they gave us) rather than playing outside or hanging out with “real” people and being active.

This however is not a difference in how one generation is necessarily wired. Youth just have few options available. Whether that be in the city or suburbs, these are not ideal places to find anything to do. Youth do not have as much independent mobility due to the danger and distance of the environment. Not just the perceived crime rate in the area, but the danger of cars and lack of sidewalks/biking areas. These places are built for cars and that is not an accident but intentional. Streets, parking lots, and driveways take up much of the land we have available in areas close to where people live.

Also, the number of streets a child would have to cross to get to school are a factor. So this leads parents in suburbs for example to only allow their kids to stay on their street or yard. There is so little to do, especially if you don’t have other kids your own age nearby. I was lucky and there were 4 other families with kids within the 20 houses nearby in the suburbs.

When I moved to a small city, it was even less likely to see kids outside the apartments playing, because of worry from the parents. At best you could occasionally have a friend come over to play inside or have your parents accompany you to the park or something else interesting (but often not free). Kids need more engagement and interesting environments, and you’d often also see empty playgrounds in the suburbs because they were not engaging to anyone but the smaller kids under 6.

When your options for activities were more limited and isolating (as was the case with most games you could find to do in the average house before smartphones) the of course you’d rather go outside and just figure out something to do with friends. Parents were more lenient then and less worried about something happening in their community because they knew their immediate neighbors. Now we are far more isolated from them by spending more time inside, and the unknown is concerning. So they give them technology that’s promoted to keep them entertained, and that’s how they get to stay connected with their peers from school / new ones made online that seem equally as far away. Across town or across the world, this is the main way you keep friends now. And so that’s more appealing, chatting and gaming and having fun there than being alone and bored outside. Heck, when o was a kid I would sometimes get told no about going outside to hang out. By middle school in 2011, we stopped playing outside entirely due to not being allowed to leave the same boring area. That isn’t the case for all kids, but it is a shame that we don’t offer them more activities that would actually inspire them to go out.

So kids are kept inside more until they can drive and take themselves places more safely, but by then, childhood is practically over. Can we blame a young generation’s tendencies on them? Society have them these things after all. Using technology as a new way to be social isn’t a bad thing. I do think it is too much, though, seeing as mental health is dire right now. My sister was born in 2005 and while we both are generation Z, her mental health was effected much worse due to post-social media being all she’s ever known. We have had very different experiences growing up nearly 7 years apart.

That Devastating period of having to be online to stay safe in 2020-2021 made it worse for everyone. Kids are relearning how to interact, and some have never seen their classmates outside of zoom. Imagine the kindergartners and first graders who had to start their first years like this.

Social media needs to have less of an influence on young people’s lives, because it is negatively affecting them. And one way to lessen it is to give them opportunities to break away from it while still being able to hang out with friends and peers. We cannot just give them a phone, tablet, or VR headset and expect them to be fine entertaining themselves alone every day.

Technology itself isn’t inherently bad, it is just a tool that can lead to fun experiences, connection, and learning (not just what school teaches you, but learning about what they might actually be interested in, like animation or robotics or sports). It’s just that companies love it because they can then sell more products and media to kids through ads, directly influencing kids into what they “have” to have or “need” to be accepted (think shoe brands, make up, clothes) or just in order to have fun (the next game system or useless unengaging toys).

All these factors have a chokehold on our youngest people. They deserve a better childhood than that, and we should take this into account with city-planning and what they are seeing subtly and not subtly shoved in their faces online.

It turned out that among the most frequently mentioned talents in job descriptions for IT jobs in California were IT abilities such as digital literacy, data analytics, and data visualization.

In today's fast-paced business landscape, digital transformation takes center stage. It encompasses a wide array of endeavors, including embracing the boundless potential of cloud technology, enhancing and modernizing IT infrastructure, and crafting sophisticated data and analytics strategies to steer informed decision-making.

Companies are actively seeking experienced professionals well-versed in the precise skills required to drive technological and business objectives forward.

The caliber of skills has improved over time, which is a consistent trend. It takes more than being proficient in a given field to compete in the talent market. In Georgetown Preservation Letter, Rep. Sessions Targets Rosa Brooks, Mary McCord, Military Officials

The chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability’s Subcommittee on Government Operations and the Federal Workforce sent a preservation letter Thursday to Rosa Brooks, an associate dean at Georgetown University School of Law, for materials related to the Transition Integrity Project.

"I am seeking to gain a comprehensive understanding of your 2020 war-gaming project, its work, and its conclusions," said Rep. Pete Sessions.

The TIP was a Soros-funded effort created to wargame 2020 presidential election scenarios with people roleplaying President Donald J. Trump, Chief Justice John Roberts, and other officials to figure out the best ways to counter a Trump victory, a Biden victory that Trump would not accept or a disputed election result.

Session wrote that he was concerned that Georgetown was becoming a political actor in violation of rules governing its tax-free status.

I am particularly concerned by the activities of TIP, and any similar endeavor in advance of the 2024 election, because this exercise seems to have been administered adjacent to the Georgetown University Law School. As you know, Georgetown University operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and receives hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding every year. It would be highly inappropriate for a university that relies on federal funding to conduct partisan political activity intended to undermine a lawfully conducted election.

TIP ran its exercises in the spring and summer of 2020, and one of its concerns was the loyalty of the District of Columbia National Guard. The D.C. National Guardsmen responded effectively to the George Floyd riots in the nation's capital with a discipline that concerned TIP participants—so much so that in the final TIP report, the authors expressed concerns that they were too loyal to Trump.

Sessions also requested the names of all TIP participants—and critically, all participants with active U.S. government security clearances, passes for federal buildings, or connections to institutions, programs, and individuals who have received or anticipate federal funding, contracts, grants, and fees.

The congressman also wants the names of TIP participants who are members of the federal bar or professors who teach students at federal expense.

Mary B. McCord

Sessions specifically singled out Professor Mary B. McCord for Brooks’ attention. McCord is now the executive director of the Georgetown University School of Law’s Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protections, or ICAP.

Just as Brooks is no utility player, neither is McCord.

Before McCord joined Brooks’ team at Georgetown, she was a holdover from President Barack Obama, serving in the early months of the Trump administration.

As the acting assistant attorney general for the National Security Division, McCord worked with another Obama holdover, acting Attorney General Sally Q. Yates, worked together to kneecap National Security Advisor Michael T. Flynn.

The subcommittee chairman quoted McCord in the letter from an interview she gave to NBC News, in its Jan. 14 web article, “Fears grow that Trump will use the military in ‘dictatorial ways’ if he returns to the White House.”

McCord told NBC: “We’re already starting to put together a team to think through the most damaging types of things that he [Trump] might do so that we’re ready to bring lawsuits if we have to.”

The congressman then made a request:

Please define if Professor McCord and her colleagues are conducting this hyperpartisan activity under the auspices of ICAP—an entity which is described as a ‘non-partisan institute within Georgetown University Law Center.

In another section of the letter, Sessions asked if Brooks and Georgetown were involved in what NBC News described as a loose-knit network of public interest groups and lawmakers devising plans to suppress the Article Two provisions defining presidential control of the military.

Sessions wrote that NBC News also suggested that McCord would be running the effort to undermine civilian control of the Pentagon.

Continued civilian control of the Pentagon is being challenged by the idea that the military is an autonomous or even feudal fiefdom immune from political influence—political meaning democratic.

The highest-profile proponent of Pentagon autonomy is retired Gen. Mark A. Milley. In speeches and interviews, Milley repeated the phrase: "We took an oath to the Constitution, not an individual.”

In Federalist 69, Alexander Hamilton wrote that the president, like the King of Great Britain, would have the supreme command and direction of the military and naval forces, as the first general and admiral of the country.

Milley said it was up to him to figure it out. Hamilton said the senior general and admiral is the president.

McCord’s effort to suppress Article Two refers to the Constitution’s Article Two, Section 2:

The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States…

If NBC News is correct, McCord is going to fight her battle in the courts, and that is where her husband comes in.

Sheldon ‘Shelly’ Snook

Attorney Sheldon “Shelly” Snook took a different path than his wife, Mary McCord. In 2014, when his wife was climbing the Justice Department ladder as a prosecutor with the District of Columbia’s U.S. Attorney’s office, Sheldon left his job as a senior administrative assistant to judges at the district’s federal courthouse and spokesman for the district's Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, for a job at the Supreme Court.

Snook became a senior staffer to Chief Justice John G. Roberts, a position he held until 2020. In 2020, he joined the National Constitution Center’s “Battle for the Constitution,” which partnered with Atlantic magazine and was endowed by the Madison Initiative of the leftwing William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

Another project Snook is working on is shutting down the longtime practice, most recently used by conservative litigants, of filing petitions in single-judge federal courthouses.

One example is the Amarillo, Texas, federal courthouse, where Judge Matthew J. Kacsmaryk handles more than 95 percent of the cases, where Texas Attorney General Kenneth Paxton filed many of his lawsuits against the Biden administration.

In early March, Snook's old boss, Roberts, tried to end so-called judge shopping with a new rule he ushered through the Committee on Court Administration and Case Management of the Judicial Conference of the United States.

The new rule would have made judge selection a lottery with larger pools of judges, with the possibility of video conference proceedings to ease travel between far-flung courthouses.

Soon after Roberts announced the new rule, the Supreme Court issued a statement clarifying that it was a recommendation. Besides the blowback from conservative litigants and solo judges, the rule would usurp the authority of a district's chief justice, who, by statute, supervises the selection of judges for cases.

That battle is still on, and it will become essential if there is litigation concerning election challenges—or maybe a case challenging the president’s authority over the military.

Media Favorites of 2023

Who can't believe that 2023 is nearly over? *raises hand* As the year winds down, this seems like the time to reflect on the things that helped us or brought us joy. The following is a list (not exhaustive) of my favorite apps, books, music, TV, and video games from the last year, including many that I would recommend to others. You can find my list from 2021 here. (I missed compiling this list in 2022, in no small part because I was sampling eastern Germany’s best Christmas Markets all through December.)

Apps

Airalo. My new go-to for international data, but you’ll need an unlocked phone. I was able to save a ton of money by setting up a second e-SIM to access Japanese mobile data networks. (It cost $10 for 10GB of data across 30 days, which was plenty for the week I spent there, and much cheaper compared to my phone plan’s offerings.) I wish I’d heard of this before my trips to England and Europe this year, but I was able to try it out in Japan successfully. I’ll definitely be making use of this app when traveling in the future. The only downside is that I can’t have both e-sims active, so I had to restart my phone in order to check my text messages. Luckily, most communication is done over apps these days instead of SMS, so I wasn’t missing much.

Reverso. This app pulled more than its weight for me while I was traveling abroad this summer. The thing I liked most about it is how it pulls up example sentences so you can help see the context and usage of a given word. It also saves your searches for you, so if you were a more disciplined language student than me, you could write down any new vocabulary in a notebook to study later. Also, it’s free and works fairly well offline, and it’s able to handle multiple languages in the same app.

Vivino. When in France, drink as the French do, I suppose. But when you’re at the supermarket trying to decide between the many, many wines available for less than 10€, this app helps to narrow down the field. Scanning the label gives you the user score for that vintage, plus a personalized rating for how it compares to previous wines you’ve enjoyed. By rating the wines I tried, I was able to get a better sense of my preferred styles and remember which labels to avoid in the future. It was also excellent to have on hand when we went to Bordeaux and sampled various Grand Crus. The app helped me to get a sense for how much those bottles would fetch back home, and whether it was worth it to buy it in France to bring home or to seek it out at my local liquor store.

Books

Dracula by Bram Stoker. The vampire book that started it all (well, not quite), this one really does live up to its reputation as a classic. A few years ago, I read Stoker’s The Jewel of Seven Stars and enjoyed it tremendously (it even served as the inspiration for a Dark Sun one-shot scenario I wrote based around Queen Tara), so I’m not sure what took me so long to get to Dracula. The epistolary style is really well done and should serve as a reference point for any game masters who long to add handouts to their campaigns. It’s inspired me to try running Night’s Black Agents in the new year.

Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch. Apparently this book is the first in an urban fantasy series I’ve been sleeping on for some time. The easy comparison is Storm Front, the first book in the Dresden Files, but I have to say that this one comes out on top re: modern wizard investigator stories, mostly because of the protagonist’s sense of humor and the audiobook narrator’s brilliant delivery. I think fans of British TV will find themselves very much at home with this book. I had the happy accident of being in London while reading this, and I had been exploring Covent Garden and the alleys surrounding the Royal Opera House immediately before reading the finale, which helped tremendously when picturing the final scenes.

Slaying the Dragon by Ben Riggs. With the news of the recent Hasbro layoffs affecting the D&D team at Wizards of the Coast, this book feels like required reading to understand some of the boom and bust cycles of D&D (although, sadly, D&D seems to be doing better than ever, and the layoffs appear to be mandated to help cover losses elsewhere in the company). It’s hard to fact-check/cross-reference this book because so much of it is original research and interviews done by the author, but that’s precisely why it’s a must-read for fans of the franchise.

Music

All Quiet on the Western Front (Soundtrack from the Netflix Film). One word: haunting. The main “melody” is extremely simplistic, but it fits the subject matter so well. I also recommend the movie if you play any 20th century-based wargames or read any history. I found it interesting that this was only the first time a German production company adapted it from the book.

Seelie by CLANN. I’m not sure how to categorize this album, except it’s incredibly ambient and dark and pagan (especially Celtic). The tracks all kind of blend together in a good way, making it excellent for writing or focus work.

Gris (Original Game Soundtrack). Another great soundtrack I put on repeat this year, mostly while reading. It’s melancholic, sweeping, hopeful. I’ve never played the video game, but if it’s half as good as the score, it’ll be quite good.

Movies/TV

Barbie. I went for a “Barbenheimer” double-feature this summer, and I did not expect Barbie to hit way harder than Oppenheimer did. Ryan Gosling might have stolen the show, but the story and the feels really made this movie stay with us. Coming from a franchise development/IP approval perspective (and this is where I have to do the disclaimer that my opinions are my own, I’m not speaking on behalf of my employer Asmodee), I’m shocked that Mattel let this get made, but I’m so glad they did.

Blue Eye Samurai. (Netflix) I had little idea this was coming until a few weeks before the release, but this show blew me away and shattered any expectations I had for it. The character development, the animation, the voice acting, the themes… it’s hard to find faults with the show (although, perhaps Mizu’s ending was unexpected). If you enjoy samurai cinema or anime, if you’re at all interested in the history of Japan, or if you’re simply an appreciator of animation, this is a must-watch.

Vienna Blood. (PBS) I like to joke that I have a grandmother’s taste in TV, because BBC/ITV period dramas make up so much of my streaming diet, but this is a mystery/detective show first and foremost. Instead of Sherlock and Watson, you’ve got Detective Rheinhardt and Max Liebermann. Max is a Jew in 1900s Vienna and a student of Freud’s work, with the psychoanalysis lending the show an interesting frame, but I’ve also really appreciated how important his family is to the show. I’ve found it really fascinating how they explore the many peoples of the Austro-Hungarian empire before its collapse, and it’s made me want to run a Cthulhu by Gaslight campaign in Vienna (elements of which I might pull forward into the NBA game).

Video Games

Baldur’s Gate 3. (PC) It shouldn’t come as a surprise that someone whose hobbies center on Dungeons & Dragons and other roleplaying games should thoroughly enjoy this game, but I’m certain that even folks who have never rolled a d20 will be delighted by this CRPG from Larian Studios. The writing and voice performances are phenomenal, and the sheer amount of content (and thus, replayability) is staggering. I’ve logged over 60 hours playing and can easily see myself playing for 60 more. I’ve only just started Act II, so no spoilers, please!

Horizon: Forbidden West. (PS5) I was a bit of a latecomer to this game after it released in 2023, but once I started, I could barely put it down. Amazing characters? Check. Phenomenal gameplay? Check. Open-world exploration that actually evokes the feeling of discovery? Check. My only quibble is that the story isn’t quite as brilliant as the first game, but given that the first game was a masterpiece and easily in my top 5 games of all time, that’s a high bar to clear. I admit I bought a PlayStation 5 just so I could play the Burning Shores expansion when it came out in April, and while personally I had been shipping Aloy with Kotallo, I appreciate the romantic subplot being included.

EE mobile network to phase out 3G connectivity

From January 2024, 3G technology will start being retired across the EE mobile network. For many this will be a landmark moment, representing an exciting upgrade for the UK as it embraces modern mobile networks which offer faster, more reliable, and more widespread connectivity. 3G has already been switched off in many countries around the world. Having first announced their intention to close our 3G network back in 2018, and reaffirmed it as part of an industry-wide commitment to the UK Government in 2021, EE have spent this time liaising closely with Ofcom, working with their charity partners like AbilityNet to provide digital skills training and create helpful resources, as well as conducting a successful 3G trial in Warrington to help ensure they get their approach for the nationwide switch off right. It is no surprise then that the use of 3G across the EE network continues to fall to record low levels; responsible for less than 0.4% of all downloaded data. According to Ofcom, EE customers only spend 2.7% of their time connected to 3G, which is the lowest amount of time of any UK mobile operator. There are two major reasons why these numbers are so small. First, they have built the largest and most widespread 4G network in the UK. EE have also spent the last three years expanding it to a further 1,500 rural communities, including some of the most remote parts of the UK, to ensure more people than ever have access to the most reliable mobile technology available today. And secondly, most customers have already left 3G behind and successfully moved to 4G or 5G. For the small minority who still use a 3G-only phone or data plan, EE recognise this is a period of change. They are committed to ensuring all of them, especially vulnerable customers, have the support available to help them make the transition successfully if they want to. As well as being the only UK mobile operator to offer all vulnerable customers a free 4G-ready mobile phone (or a big discount on a pay monthly plan for those who want to choose their own handset), they have also set up a dedicated freephone line where they can call EE 3G support team to talk through their individual needs and get help with migrating. It is also important to remember that some customers have no desire or need to use mobile data.
