Lowes chest freezer
Tumblr media
✔️ Chest freezers are low-profile box-shaped freezers with a hinged lid that opens from the top. Less usable space than chest freezer because of shelves and drawers.Higher incidence of freezer burn because more air circulates around food.Auto-defrost function can be noisy and consumes more energy. No need to melt and clean up ice build-up because of automatic defrost.Narrow enough to fit through doorways easily. This makes them better for short-term storage: Even if you open the door multiple times a day, the automatic defrost function will prevent ice from accumulating. They come with an automatic defrost function that heats the internal coils in regular intervals to avoid frost build-up. ✔️ Upright freezers look a lot like conventional single-door refrigerators with shelves, drawers, and extra storage space on the door. The best part is that it comes with an automatic defrost function that prevents ice build up and saves you the trouble of having to thaw and clean this giant freezer. The temperature can be adjusted to convert the freezer to a refrigerator and back, using the quick-freeze function that reduces the temperature to the maximum freezing point of 11✯. It includes a high-temperature alert light, a digital temperature display, a quick-freeze key, a freezer-to-fridge conversion key (we love a double-duty appliance!) and a control panel lock key so that you don’t accidentally alter your selections. The temperature control panel is easy to read and use. With a 21-cubic-foot capacity, four adjustable and sturdy glass shelves, two see-through slide-out bins and four door bins, this pick provides a ton of storage. Kenmore has been known for reliable and serviceable appliances for more than 100 years, and the Kenmore 22202 freezer is no exception. The manufacturer claims that the freezer keeps foods frozen for two days during a power outage. It has a bright interior LED light and an exterior light to indicate a power outage. A separate alarm is triggered when the internal temperature of the freezer rises, helping you quickly troubleshoot so that your food stays safely frozen. The automatic defrost function also prevents ice build-up (which would otherwise need to be manually defrosted and cleaned out). This freezer includes an audible open-door alert system, which is a helpful feature because when the door is left ajar, moisture is harvested from the air flowing in and ice accumulates inside. The door can be installed with the handle to the left or the right. Our evaluators liked that the base of the door racks are rounded and closed, keeping smaller items from sliding out as you open and close the door. Our favorite upright freezer pick provides 13 cubic feet of storage space with four adjustable wire shelves, a deep basket on the bottom and five full-width door racks. Best Compact Freezer: Whynter CUF20SS Upright Compact Freezer.Best Large-Capacity Freezer: Kenmore 22202 Upright Convertible Freezer.Best Convertible Freezer: Galanz GLF11UWEA16 Convertible Freezer.Best Chest Freezer: Kenmore KLC019MWD Chest Freezer.Best Upright Freezer: Frigidaire FFFU13F2VW Upright Freezer. Here are our recommendations for the best freezers to buy in 2021: Our picks include best-selling models from trusted brands that we love and have bought for ourselves. We considered useful features like automatic defrost, flash-freeze and power-on and open-door indicators as well as storage options and energy efficiency. We relied on years of food-storage knowledge from our kitchen appliance pros at the Good Housekeeping Institute when evaluating upright freezers and chest freezers at various price points, sizes and capacities. If you want to make your food last, you might be in the market for a new standalone freezer. They're also great for hunters who have a bulk supply of game. You will also find new picks from Galanz for best convertible freezer and Whynter for best compact freezer.Ī stand-alone freezer provides additional storage space for frozen foods and meats that you purchase in bulk, preserves excess produce to enjoy all year round and allows you to stock up on prepared meals. The best chest freezer recommendation was replaced with the Kenmore KLC019MWD chest freezer. This article was updated in November 2021 to ensure all picks previously vetted by the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances Lab were in stock and reflected current pricing.

at the 127 dorms...
you grabbed your third can of beer from the fridge and walked back towards your room. the members– who were present, were in the living room trying to beat summer's scorching heat. with that, they've witnessed your constant trips back and forth to the fridge to get a can of alcohol.
at first, they've thought it was your new way to beat the heat. they've thought you wanted to try something new, but they started to notice something wrong later on.
it was so hot to the point the windows were closed, the room doors were wide open, trying to compile the cool breezes from their room's air conditioners. you, on the other hand, oddly stayed in your room, isolating yourself.
they've started to worry as you came back for more cans. they started to worry from how you came back for more with your roommate's hoodie on, covering your face from letting them see your pink puffy eyes (which was still evident either way) and disheveled hair.
they started to worry as you were silent not making any complaints about the weather, knowing how whiney you could be. to how you barely made any contact with them, which was new. they figure something was acting up since it was rare for them to see you cry.
at the moment, you were trying hard to avoid any contact with them. the boys–being the caring brothers they were, decided to do some research. it was easy for them to find the answer. why? your name was trending on twitter.
they clicked on the hashtag and immediately found tons of explanations, some hate, some defends, and some who were also doing the same as the members were. they got their solution from an article– well.. maybe articles.
you became dispatch's newest victim, dragging you into a fresh rumor. due to the scandal, it gained you even more hate than usual. you gained the worst backlash you've witnessed so far. the members finally understood what you were going through, knowing you were mentally weak. you were always sensitive and insecure when it comes to the perspective of others. it was a side you didn't want to show to people. slightly a stupid idea, but they left you to do things on your own, giving you some alone time to cry.
well, things like these in the entertainment industry are unavoidable to be honest. in the industry, rumors, scandals, controversies, hate— happens 24/7, leading fandoms into flames every single day.
you drinking for quite a while now, you were slightly feeling drowsy. you didn't know whether it came from the beer or your constant crying. maybe a mix of both. you took the opportunity to bawl your eyes out and sulk while the rest were outside. you didn't want to rant how you felt to them, you had no courage to do so. you were currently by the farthest part of the room from the door. you were sitting on the carpeted floor, leaning on your roomie's bed behind you. you continued scrolling down on a few tweets about you. some were defending you․ however, it was overpowered by all the hate. you saw a tweet that made your heart rip into half. it was how you destroyed the group by joining it, to how your debut was a mistake. you felt an arrow pierce through your chest.
"so that's how they feel, huh?" you thought to yourself. your tears fell even harder and faster. and it was only a year and a half since you debuted as nct's only female member. the entertainment agreed that you were suited more for a boy group - you stood out and you were too powerful to be in a female group. your style totally blended well with nct's concept. people were astonished. people loved you. people were disgusted. calling you an attention seeker, a whore.
you felt like the villain here. you felt everything crashing down on you started by a false story. people seizing the opportunity to ruin you. you felt the worst you could've felt about yourself.
you went out again, fast-walking across the members, ducking your head. you grabbed another can and dashed back to your shared room. you went back to the corner and downed your drink just in a few minutes. at this point, drinking your problems and crying was the solution, well first, that's what you presumed.
a small sniffle was heard from the living room as your door was left slightly opened. at this point, they even more concerned. you should've asked their comforts, they agreed. they had to do something now or they'll be bearing with a hungover-ed y/n later. they couldn't handle the fact their little princess was hurting on her own. they were furious and hurt, hearing you breakdown for the first time. referencing your senior group, you were one. ohana.
you came back to the kitchen for more. in and out of the kitchen with unbalanced baby steps, making your consumption evident. as you went back, they started to hold a talk. they were itching for a solution to make you open up without force. you were fragile as a glass sheet at the moment. so they came up with one after a few ideas.
first, they took all the alcohol– with a water bottle by chance from the refrigerator (it was a couple left since you took a few.) placing the cool beer cans by them, low-key guarding and cooling off at the same time. they thought you'd approach them for a can... but again, that's what was presumed.
when you came out of the room for the nth time, you saw all the remaining cans with your members. you continued to walk slowly to the fridge, later on kneeling in front of it, having a short dilemma about your beverage. then, a bolt of lightning struck your imaginary lightbulb, sparking an alternative. you looked at the boys as they continued to stare at you. you smiled at them as you giggled, making your eyes disappear, it scared the heck out of the boys. you faced the fridge, pulling the side starting to find your new option.
why cry over beer when there's soju?
you grabbed the bottle and slowly went back your way. the boys were dumbfounded as they saw you walking back with a green bottle in hand. "who bought all the drinks in the first place?" taeyong nagged as everybody looked at yuta, who just shrugged. "man. she's an intellectual!" they facepalmed as they were amazed at how cute you were. they continued to giggle until one laughed it off and stepped up. "moving on to plan b. go get her, big bear"
your roommate was an optimistic guy. he was always bright and bubbly like how you were, both on and off stage. he was that kind of guy who would never let you swim in negativity for long. almost too positive. he was over-enthusiastic.
he laughed for a good few seconds as he quickly stood up rushing to you, knowing he'd be responsible later to watch over your drunk ass. he rushed to you, who looked like a drunkard strolling the calm streets at midnight. he held your wrist as he snatched the green bottle. he hurried and placed it on the coffee table by the boys, grabbing the water bottle from a while ago as a replacement. you saw your soju flash before your eyes. "whY? tHat's minE! YAH!" you whined as you made a turn and rushed to the area trying to grab your bottle back.
the others continued to watch the 'k-drama' that was happening in front of them, smiling at how you were all grumpy. your roommate blocked the way and laughed at you who was trying to push him. "i'll take care of her" he looked to his fellow members than to you, who was still struggling to make him move. lifting you up, you were now hanging by his shoulder. you were high in the air, being the tall guy he was.
he brought you to your shared room, pushing the door and leaving it a bit open for the others to follow in. the rest followed in as support, by the door about to listen and watch to the conversation. he slowly laid you on the bed as he did too, beside you. you sat up, and glared at your roommate. "i believe you had too much of heineken, missy." he sat up, nearing you.
he held your hand as he pulled you closer to him. "alcohol isn't the best solution you know?" he patted your head, looking at you. you came closer and buried your face into his shoulder, starting to cry for the hundredth time today. "johnny... it hurts. so... bad." you finally let out all the tears you've been collecting for yourself.
johnny brought you to his lap as he cradled you like an infant. he hugged you from your side as he rubbed your back, you continuing to cry, feeling the pain compiled in your chest.
seeing and hearing you cry that hard made everyone's heartache, eyes tearing up as well. "i'm sorry" you tried to mumbled out in between tears and breaths. "don't be. just remember that i'm here, alright? that the members are here to listen, okay?"
"hey, it happened already. the company will find a way to settle this. just, ...show them your best and what you got okay? we'll help." he continued to rub your back as he called the rest waiting to come in. bringing you into a group hug. the members stayed in the room, staying by your side.
for the whole time, you were in johnny's arms, feeling cozy. you both were able to exchange experiences, advices, and more. making you feel so much better. with the beer's after-effects kicking in, you felt drowsy and eventually, you passed out. silently, while you were passed out, the rest continued to stay, seeing a resemblance of a baby in johnny's arm. johnny went along and swayed you side-to-side, singing a short lullaby for comedic purposes.
johnny tucked you in with the help of some members. you were drenched in sweat and tears, your face was flushed in pink from all the crying and drinking.
"youngho... you. thief..." you mumbled. everybody caught what you mumbled and fixed their eyes on both you and johnny. unconsciously, you made a small smile.
"they say, honesty comes out when drunk, youngho." everyone in the room gave johnny a playful stink eye, getting what you mumbled.
this became a secret only the boys knew.

Winter Cabin Escape 1 - Drabbles
Tumblr media
Note: This fic is for @aerynwrites December Writing Challenge 2021. Though it will progress chnologically, I’ve decided to write it in drabbles with provided prompts and some of my own. It will likely be two or three parts.
As always, if you like what you read, please leave a like, comment, or reblog.
Day 4 - Cozy Cabin || Patterned rugs, soft blankets, and warm baths.
Cabin
When Lena pointed at the structure below, Kara reduced her speed and glided into a soft landing with her girlfriend in her arms. Lena liked to call them lovers, which was fine, but Kara liked girlfriend because it retained a certain sweetness and innocence of love. In her mind, anyway. Setting Lena down, Supergirl took in the two story log cabin and wrinkled her nose in disappointment. The structure was sound, but old. Her Kryptonian enhanced vision noticed that from above.
“You don’t approve,” Lena asked, pointedly, pulling the goggles from her eyes and setting them on top of her head.
“It’s not that I don’t approve,” Kara answered, honestly. “It’s just not what I expected.”
“What did you expect, Kara? A long mansion with vaulted ceilings, bay windows, and marble flooring?”
Kara chewed on her lower lip. “Well, yeah. I guess so.”
Lena unzipped her winter coat as she came to stand next to Kara, who was still in her Supergirl uniform. “This house has been in my family for years and, as much as I love shiny new things and the allure of technology, there is something to be said for rustic.”
“Rustic, yes,” Kara said, unconvinced. “Haunted, no.”
“Oh my goodness,” Lena teased. “I never thought I’d see Kara Danvers being so judgey. Don’t you worry your pretty little Kryptonian head. I’ve kept the cabin clean and well maintained over the years, though I haven’t gotten out here as often as I’d like, which means almost never.”
Kara turned and kissed the brunette on the cheek. “We’re here now. I guess we should make the best of it. I never thought I’d seen Lena Luthor so close to nature.”
“There is a first time for everything, My Dear,” Lena said, raising a hand to Kara’s jaw and pulling her attention away from cabin’s entrance. Kissing the blonde hard on the mouth, she grinned devilishly. “I promise it will be worth your while.”
When Kara’s red boot hit the first step, she expected to hear a long whining creak, but, surprisingly she didn’t. Continuing up the steps, she waited for Lena to open the front door.
 Blankets
It wasn’t long before the two settled in, putting away their clothes, which Lena had delivered, and reviewing the refrigerator and cupboards, which Lena had stocked in advance. As Kara explored the large living room, her gaze fell on an old travel trunk on the far wall under a bay window. Using her x-ray vision, she checked the contents of the trunk, finding a layered stack of quilts and afgans. Crossing the room, she pinched the locking mechanism to open it up. She smiled at the stack of covers and began to pull them out to examine. From a patchwork quilt of different forest wildlife to a single color maroon afgan to….Kara stopped when she saw the edge of her Kryptonian crest on the comforter cover at the bottom of the chest. The comforter was king sized and displayed the familiar ‘S’ of her family crest in he pentagonal shield. It was impressive.
“Oh,” Lena said as she entered the living room and saw Kara holding the blanket. “You found it.”
“Yeah,” Kara replied, magnanimously. “Your secret is out!”
Lena blushed as she approached her girlfriend. “It’s not a secret anymore; for either of us.”
Kara nodded, slowly in acknowledgement, and kissed Lena lightly on the lips. “You’re right about that, but this make me wonder: Was it Supergirl or Kara you fell for first?”
Lena gave Kara a coy smile and returned her lover’s kiss. “I’ll never tell.”
 Fire
The fire was burning hot and crackling as it bathed Kara and Lena in a warm golden glow as the snuggled an assortment of quilts and afgans, topped by the Supergirl comforter.
“Aren’t you full of surprises,” Kara said, resting her head on Lena’s shoulder. “I had no idea you could make a fire from scratch.”
“As long as we’ve known each other and you still think I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth,” Lena said, into Kara’s lustrous blonde locks.
Kara lifted her head and looked at her girlfriend incredulously. “You were born with a silver spoon in your mouth.”
“I learned some hand skills along the way,” Lena replied. “As a Luthor, I discovered early that you have to find your own peace. Building fires was peaceful for me. Not that I wanted to burn it all down, mind you. But it was something I did on my own. I would not let the servants help. Father didn’t like it all. That didn’t stop me.
“I’m just glad you were able to find some kind of peace during those years,” Kara said.
“Plus, I have to pull my weight around here given all the energy you spent cutting the wood,” Lena said, eyes sparkling, playfully.
“There are three cord of wood out there already, cut and stacked. You just wanted to see me cut some more.”
“Guilty as charged,” Lena replied, resting her hand on Kara’s thigh beneath the covers. “Are you warm enough?”
“Getting warmer as we speak,” Kara replied, flushing.

Sweet Victory (Good Omens Fic)
On April 21, 2021 - Aethelflaed and Elf-on-the-Shelf met in frantic Discord Sprint Competition. The goal: be the first in the DIWS Discord server to reach Level 1000. The reward: the coveted title of Spront Lord. In our final sprint, we chose the shared prompt of "Sweet Victory." My results follow...and can also be found on AO3
--
“Ready?” Aziraphale said, resting primly against the kitchen wall.
Crowley, meanwhile, crouched, braced himself to charge forward.
“Go!” the demon shouted.
They dashed to the kitchen counter, where two sets of equipment and ingredients sat waiting, and began sorting through them as fast as possible.
Crowley had seen his angel cook before. Aziraphale took great delight in following every recipe to the letter, selecting only the finest ingredients, measuring each precisely, scraping a knife across the top of each cup to ensure not a single extra grain of sugar was added.
Crowley’s own methods were more…Crowley-esque.
He tore open each bag and container, scooping out the flour and dumping it into the bowl. Half of it wound up around the bowl, but that’s why he used big scoops. Sugar by the fistful, salt one pinch at a time. Butter. Milk. Cocoa powder. Everything that he needed to create the perfect cake.
The electric mixer screamed along at its top speed, brown dust flying in every direction, batter spattering up his shirt and across the wall. Four different eggs smashed on the floor, and he swept them aside with his foot.
The oven was pre-set to the correct temperature, but there would barely be room for two pans. The one who completed his mix first would get the coveted spot in the middle of the oven; the other would have to make do with another rack.
Crowley dumped the batter into the cake pan and slid it into place, slamming the oven shut while Aziraphale was still carefully counting the strokes of his spoon.
“Ha!” he crowed, leaning against the oven, then quickly danced away. “Ow, ow, ow, door hot.”
“Yes, dear,” Aziraphale said placidly. His pacing hadn’t altered, steady as a metronome.
He carefully measured and poured his batter into two small pans and placed his cakes in on the lower shelf, setting an egg timer down in his counter space.
Crowley, on the other hand, knelt and watched through the window, a trick he’d learned from Bake Off. The cake cooked quickly, puffing up just a little. When it looked done-ish, he snatched it out.
They had made the icing the previous night, though failed to agree that Crowley had definitely won that one. He snatched it out of the refrigerator now, and started slathering it atop the cake, thick as he could. Aziraphale raised an eyebrow at him and glanced at his timer, but continued waiting with patience that was rarely reserved for non-food-related activities.
The timer dinged, and Aziraphale pulled his cake pans out of the oven as Crowley put the finishing touches on his own: showering it with three different kinds of sprinkles. He folded his arms and gave the angel his smuggest grin.
Aziraphale’s cake cooled, and Crowley’s began to drip.
First the icing…melted off the cake, turning back into a runny glaze. He attacked it with spoon and knife, trying to pile it all on top where it belonged, but it was no good—now the cake began to crumble, sections breaking off, collapsing inward.
By the time Aziraphale finished his, glancing at the clock with a little bastard smile, Crowley’s had been reduced to a pile of chocolate crumbs mashed up in icing.
“You have another minute,” Aziraphale said. “if you think you have a plan.”
“I always have a plan.” Crowley scraped his cake into a clean bowl, mashed and stirred frantically with a fork, and looked up just as the clock struck noon. “S’pudding,” he explained with a grin.
“I…suppose…” Aziraphale looked skeptically at the mess. “I suppose I should taste yours first.”
“Yeah. Because I won. Sweet victory!”
“We were racing for the oven, yes, but we agreed victory would go to the best dessert, not the fastest.”
“Same difference.”
Aziraphale frowned, dipping first a fork and then—when that didn’t seem to work—a spoon into Crowley’s pudding. He lifted the bite, sniffed it, and popped it in his mouth.
Then promptly spat it into the sink.
“Darling,” he said with immense patience. “Did you mix up the sugar and the salt again?”
“No!” Crowley looked at the counter where he’d worked, white powder covering every surface. “Possibly.” He scraped his finger through the pudding and licked it with a forked tongue, then gagged. “Yes.”
Aziraphale smiled, cutting off a small section of two-layer cake, buttercream evenly spread with a whimsical pattern drawn in dark red piping. He lifted the forkful to his mouth and took a delicate bite. “Perfection” he said, licking his lips. “Absolutely delectable.”
“How do I know?” Crowley scowled, reaching grab a handful, though Aziraphale batted his arm away. “It isn’t fair if I can’t at least taste it.”
“Of course.” Aziraphale cut off another forkful and offered the bite. Crowley leaned forward to take it, but the angel pulled it back and popped it in his own mouth.
“Oi! How am I—”
Aziraphale pulled his husband into a kiss, a warm, chocolate-flavored kiss.
Defeat had never tasted so sweet.
--
Thank you for reading! Yes, this WAS all written in a single 20 minute sprint...except for the last few sentences, because I ran out of time...and also all the edits.
Regardless, the results of Elf's and my competition was: we both passed Level 1000 after this sprint! But Elf had enough bonus points to get up to Level 1001. So we both got the title of Spront Lord, but she technically did slightly better.
SLIGHTLY.

Best Live Action Short Film Nominees for the 93rd Academy Awards (2021, listed in order of appearance in the shorts package)
NOTE: For viewers in the United States (continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawai’i) who would like to watch the Oscar-nominated short film packages, click here. For virtual cinemas, you can purchase the packages individually or all three at once. You can find info about reopened theaters that are playing the packages in that link. Because moviegoing carries risks at this time, please remember to follow health and safety guidelines as outlined by your local, regional, and national health officials.
This blog, since 2013, has been the site of my write-ups to the Oscar-nominated short film packages. No pandemic was going to stop me this year, as I was able to view the short film packages virtually thanks to a local repertory, the Frida Cinema of Santa Ana, California. Without further ado, here are the nominees for the Best Live Action Short Film at this year’s Oscars. Films predominantly not in the English language are listed with their nation of origin.
The Present (2020, Palestine)
Since the 1990s, the Israeli military has set up hundreds of checkpoints within Palestine’s West Bank. These checkpoints have impeded Palestinian movement within the Israeli-occupied West Bank, supposedly to better protect the extraterritorial Israeli settlements there. Directed by Farah Nabulsi, The Present could have easily fell into an agitprop trap – leaning on political outrage rather than the individual emotions that power this film – but it deftly avoids doing so. On the day of his wedding anniversary with his wife, Yusef (Saleh Bakri) decides to go shopping with daughter Yasmine (Maryam Kanj). Yusef and Yasmine travel to and from Bethlehem (which is in Palestine, but is not easily accessible by Palestinians) to purchase a new refrigerator, groceries, and a few goodies for Yasmine. The process of traveling just a few miles from home proves onerous and humiliating.
Nabulsi’s film never feels like a lecture, instead preferring to juxtapose the cruel ironies that these Israeli checkpoints embody. The viewer intuits how militarized and confusing these checkpoints must be to the Palestinians. Israel’s apartheid mindset extends to the West Bank – the checkpoints have a single lane for Israeli drivers and a gated, narrow entryway specifically for the Palestinians. Past the checkpoint during their time shopping, life seems briefly normal. That Nabulsi can navigate the contrasting emotions between these scenes reflects the tautness of this film and its hints of Italian Neorealism. Bakri, as Yusef, is excellent during his tense conversations with the Israeli soldiers, even if some of these moments feel more stilted due to the actors playing the soldiers and the guerrilla filmmaking this piece employs. For Kanj, as Yasmine, one can see her anguish in seeing her father discriminated against on what should have been a special day. For Palestinian children, injustice is a rite of passage.
My rating: 8/10
Feeling Through (2019)
It is a chilly night in New York City at an hour where few are outside by choice. Teenager Tareek (Steven Prescod) is homeless. After saying good night to his friends, he happens upon Artie, a deafblind man (Robert Tarango, who is deafblind himself) holding up a sign requesting anyone to assist him. Curious and half-willing to help, Tareek taps Artie on the arm. Artie pulls out a tattered notepad and marker, asking for help to get to a bus stop. What follows is an uplifting connection between two cast-off souls, sharing each other’s good company and good humor if only for a brief time. Director Doug Roland based Feeling Through on an encounter he had with a deafblind man named Artemio. Roland’s film was accomplished in collaboration with the Hellen Keller Center.
Cynical viewers might view Feeling Through as syrupy, its swirling score too manipulative, the screenplay predictable, the filmmaking pedestrian. To different extents, each of those criticisms are true, but that does not undermine the raw inspiration responsible for this film’s pulse. It boasts solid performances from Prescod and Tarango – the latter a kitchen worker from Long Island and possibly the first deafblind actor in a lead role in film history. Roland’s screenplay beautifully strips away stereotypes of deafblind people. Tarango, as Artie, is neither overly dependent nor secluded from society. He knows that being deafblind sets him apart from those who can see and hear, and embraces the difference – lending a refreshing directness to how he communicates. Despite its lack of filmmaking or acting pedigree compared to its other nominees in this category, Feeling Through enters this Academy Awards season without a single loss in any of the film festivals that it screened in. No wonder: it is a crowd-pleaser in the best sense, without ever glossing over how difficult it is to be deafblind.
My rating: 9/10
Two Distant Strangers (2020)
Production on Travon Free and Martin Desmond Roe’s Two Distant Strangers began in the shadow of George Floyd’s murder at the hands of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. Its emotions are raw and there is no doubt behind the importance of the film’s messaging. Carter (rapper Joey Bada$$) has had some first date with Perri (Zaria Simone), and leaves in the morning to get home to his pet dog. Just outside the apartment building door, a police officer named Merk (Andrew Howard) stops Carter, profiles him, and ultimately kills Carter in cold blood. Once Carter dies, the film cuts to Carter and Perri in bed once again. Immediately, the viewer knows this film is a time loop a la Groundhog Day (1993), and, no matter what precautions he takes, Carter just cannot avoid execution from Merk’s hands. Through the film’s structure, Free and Roe capture the sinking, repetitive feeling that black Americans go through when hearing the news of yet another incident of police brutality.
Good intentions and urgency, however, do not necessarily make a worthy film. Some of the editing in Two Distant Strangers’ middle third shows too many images of Carter’s bullet-riddled body. After the first few instances of the time loop, the viewer does not need another glimpse of a lead-shredded corpse, blood splattering across pavement. The filmmaker’s fury towards Carter’s situation – that nothing will change – is already evident in the idea of such killings. Combined with the questionable dialogue in the final time loop and the mediocre acting, this all feels exploitative, an unwitting product of Hollywood’s history of fetishizing black trauma. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), historically, likes to reward films they perceive as demonstratively staged and thematically urgent. Two Distant Strangers meets both these criteria, but this material could have retained its rage without as much sensationalism.
My rating: 6/10
White Eye (2019, Israel)
Like Feeling Through, Tomer Shushan’s White Eye – the winner of the Narrative Short Film award at South by Southwest (SXSW) – was based on an actual encounter in its director’s life. Late at night in the streets of Tel Aviv, Omer (Daniel Gad) has spotted his stolen bicycle locked onto a rack. Omer lost his bike more than a month ago, has not filed a police report, and seeks to reclaim it as soon as possible. The police are of no help, and the people proximate to the intersection where these events take place are unwilling or hesitant to help. The now-owner of the bike is an Eritrean refugee named Yunes (Dawit Tekelaeb), and he insists to his manager (Reut Akkerman) and to Omer that he did not know that the bike was stolen property when he purchased it. And yet Omer’s tenacity and fit of passion spirals the situation beyond his or Yunes’ control.
White Eye is impressively staged, filmed in a single take – no cuts, no edits, all in real-time. To compare this film one last time to Feeling Through, White Eye accomplishes all it needs to say at a short film’s length. Some might claim Saar Mizrahi’s cinematography and 360º smooth-rotating is just another modern filmmaking gimmick; instead, it submerges the viewer into Omer’s mentality as he fights to retrieve his bike. The purposefully subjective framing questions the viewer on what our reactions might be in this situation, how deeply would we allow out outrage – and perhaps our ethnic/racial biases – to guide our actions. Shushan challenges the audience not to adopt Omer’s conclusions and emotions so readily, and he does a masterful job in appealing to and challenging one’s empathy as it becomes clear there will be no storybook ending.
My rating: 8/10
The Letter Room (2020)
By virtue of its central actor, The Letter Room is the most high-profile of this year’s nominees. Elvira Lind’s film is a dark comedy and its approach and tone are difficult to categorize. Richard (a mustached Oscar Isaac, who is Lind’s spouse) is a corrections officer who has requested a departmental transfer. With the transfer, he trades a more hands-on role for an office job. As the prison’s communications director, his responsibilities now entail filing through all of the prisoners’ incoming and outgoing mail – reading through all of the letters, reporting to his superiors for prison rules violations, censoring materials if necessary. At first, this role is as tedious as his previous position. But when Richard begins to read the histories of the prisoners and their loved ones, he becomes emotionally invested in a particular exchange between one death row inmate and his loved one (Alia Shawkat).
The Letter Room, despite a serviceable performance by Isaac as the unusual and stiff lead, has a milquetoast commentary about how the American criminal justice system imprisons more than just the inmates. These themes shambolically merge with Richard’s inherent loneliness, his inability to separate his own feelings from the voyeuristic work that his new position entails. This is a fellow looking for meaningful human connection, finding none, and attempting to understand something he has never found. The Letter Room curiously never questions the tricky ethics of Richard’s decision to intervene with the decisions made by Alia Shawkat’s character, and how the power disparities of his interactions color his life. The film’s conclusion is unearned, placing too neat a bow on a film that cannot balance its incongruous themes.

David Copperfield
[The Personal History, Adventures, Experience and Observation of David Copperfield the Younger of Blunderstone Rookery (Which He Never Meant to Publish on Any Account), by Charles Dickens. With Illustrations by HK Browne. First Edition Published by Bradbury & Evans, London, 1850. 624 pp]
'Well, well!' said my aunt, 'the child is right to stand by those who have stood by him – Janet! Donkeys!'
Just opposite the pond where a pioneering Francis Bacon tried to stuff a chicken with snow (an early experiment in refrigeration, as a result of which he died) is where Coleridge stayed when he was trying to get off Laudanum. The chemist he used to supply his needs (just around the corner) apparently had a secret door so that he could pick up supplies discreetly.
This was all a bit earlier than Charles Dickens’s semi-autobiographical novel David Copperfield, in which the hero stays with the Steerforth family, in the same street, in their imposing house on Highgate Hill, where he revels in the view across London. It does, though, set a tone.
Go to Highgate today and you can still take in the views, across Hampstead Heath and to the landmark hungry city beyond. You’ll see interesting looking delicatessens and bakeries and estate agents in whose windows are advertised average-looking properties with eye-watering prices. Cyclists and runners come here for the challenge. (That climb up West Hill must be traumatic, and so must the one past Highgate Cemetery where Karl Marx lies quiescent). What you won’t see is any trace (apart from a blue plaque) of that Dickensian hero who was to all intents and purposes, Dickens himself.
When I first went to Grammar School (some time before the flood), our teacher of English, a redoubtable Scots lady, set us to work reading Robbie Burns, most of which I still find unreadable to this day: (“First he ate the black puddens, and then he ate the white” if memory serves. What was all that stuff about?). But then, having, I suppose given up on us ever adopting Scotland as a second nation, started us reading David Copperfield.
There was a lot of early humour. She had us read passages from the book, and one of my classmates had the misfortune to take on a section in which, according to him, “workmen were warming their hands round a brassiere.” (Brazier was the word he was searching for, but an unpleasant nickname pursued him for years afterwards). We couldn’t get why Brooks of Sheffield would be listening in to awkward conversations about David’s destiny, let alone why David should be the someone who was “sharp”, or why Barkis, the carrier, should be ‘willin’.
Steerforth of course is both David’s boyhood hero and nemesis, eventually betraying in the most callous manner David’s adolescent friend Little Emily, so it is ironic that his family home sits high on a hill where you might have thought all manner of approaching disasters might be foreseen. You look at that house and contemplate how Mrs Steerforth lived there, alone and destroyed by the revelation that her son had been the least moral of individuals, with an inherent streak of cruelty.
What no one likes about David Copperfield in particular and Dickens in general is how good all the children (a lot of the adult characters too) actually are. You know, and I know, that children and adults too, just aren’t like that. His characters are noble, responsible, uniquely loving and should they ever commit a single irresponsible act, they suffer for it (usually in silent prayer) over a good number of pages. This is a feeling you can’t get over, but perhaps as the pages go on you learn to ignore a little in the face of mounting eccentricity.
The mentally troubled Mr Dick and his fixation with kites and Charles I helps you do this, so too does Mr Wilkins Micawber who continually totters on the brink of the debtors’ prison (like Dickens’s own father) while continually fathering children and remaining optimistic that ‘something will turn up’.
But while the good do seem impossibly good, the bad are really bad too, though believably so. David’s own mother perhaps doesn’t mean to be bad. (She just falls in love with the wrong man). But David’s schoolmasters are disconcertingly sadistic. Steerforth, the schoolboy role model shapes up to be a hero, but is gradually revealed to be a snob without decency or morals. And then there’s Uriah Heep, the character for whom the word ‘oily’ was created, the beast who corrupts all about him and whose desires – for both heiress and position in society – are so grotesque, yet so nearly come true.
David Copperfield is not a fairy tale. Instead it is a whole collection of them, in which every variety of fairy tale outcome from cruel disaster to shining achievement takes its place within its pages. Most varieties of mythical beast are there too, together with a few, often vulnerable, often understated, heroes. The best novels always answer ‘what if?’ questions. So many what ifs arise in David Copperfield that it is virtually a philosophy course. There’s a muted plea for social justice too, which is no bad thing, even now.
There are a lot of reasons not to read it. (Too long, too sentimental, too much else to do). But ever since my dour Scots teacher encouraged us to open its pages, it has become one of those books I go back to, time after time.

April 1st, 2019
“Haven’t you heard of April Fool’s, Dee?” Logan asked.
Dee shook his head, brows knitting together in confusion. “What is it?” he asked.
“It’s a day where people commonly play harmless pranks on each other, like short-sheeting someone’s bed, or swapping sugar for salt by the coffee. I never really got to play a lot of pranks, because my old parents...were not the biggest fans of that sort of thing, but it’s generally pretty fun, so long as no one gets hurt when you play those pranks,” Logan explained.
Dee nodded to show he was listening, but he wasn’t sure he understood. Patton and Virgil swapping clothes and pretending to be each other was kind of weird, especially considering that they weren’t identical twins. But he supposed it was whatever. Maybe he’d better understand next year, and could play a few pranks of his own.
April 1st, 2021
Dee dashed around the house, snickering like mad. It was April Fool’s day, and he had woken up before dawn and was unable to go back to sleep, so he decided to play some pranks on the rest of the family. Nothing mean-spirited, of course, and nothing that would get them hurt. Just little things like hiding Dad’s toothbrush in the medicine cabinet, or swapping Ami’s white shirt with a pink one on the same hanger that he always got the white one from. He found it hilarious, but he was trying to be quiet so no one else would wake up in the middle of his plans.
Thankfully, everyone seemed to be tired enough that no one heard his laughter. He was downstairs, making himself breakfast in the form of grabbing a pair of Pop-Tarts and sat on the kitchen stool, swinging his legs a little and humming the song he had been learning in Music for the past couple weeks. Occupied by this, he only barely registered Ami behind him when he was three feet away. Ami didn’t stop behind him, though, just went to the refrigerator. “You’re up early, Dee.”
“I couldn’t sleep,” Dee signed when Ami turned to look at him.
“Bad dreams?” Ami asked. “Because you can always come to me and Dad, no matter how old you are.”
Dee shook his head. “No bad dreams. I just woke up and couldn’t sleep again.”
“You could still come to me and Dad,” Ami said.
Oh. Dee hadn’t realized that. Still, he wasn’t sure there was much they could have done, so he just shrugged in response.
“Oh, and by the way, I know my white shirt didn’t get thrown into the wash with any red socks, so the pink shirt you put on my hangers? Is definitely not mine,” Ami said.
“It was in your dresser,” Dee signed.
Ami frowned, fingers darting side to side as he thought. “Huh. Well what do you know? I do own a single pink shirt.”
“Are you gonna wear it today?” Dee asked.
Ami leaned against the counter and hummed. “You know what? Why not? It could be a fun prank on my employees. I’m pretty sure they’re convinced I only own one pair of clothes.”
Dee snickered more and glanced at the clock in the kitchen. Any minute now, Logan’s alarm was bound to go off...
“Dee, what else did you do for pranks?” Ami asked.
Dee just blinked, putting on his best innocent face. “I don’t know what you mean,” he signed.
“Oh, come on, Dee, you get a huge kick out of April Fool’s videos on YouTube. What else did you do?” Ami pressed.
Dee sat on the kitchen stool, munching on his Pop-Tart innocently while Ami stared him down. Upstairs, there was the sound of an alarm, and hurried footsteps, before a very loud thud reverberated through the house, followed by a very annoyed, "Deagan Timothy Picani!"
It was impossible not to crack up as Logan stormed down the stairs, only to trip at the threshold of the kitchen because of the shrink wrap still stuck to his feet. Logan glared at Dee, who only continued to giggle as Logan wrestled with the shrink wrap on his feet. “Not funny,” he ground out. “I could have broken my wrists!”
“In my defense, I didn’t think you would try to run out of your room,” Dee signed, laughter finally dying down.
“He generally isn’t up this early, Logan, you know he’s telling the truth,” Ami said. “He doesn’t know your morning routine.”
Logan rolled his eyes and sighed. “I’m still annoyed,” he snapped. “And you probably woke up the whole house by causing me to trip that hard.”
“You’re the one who yelled,” Dee retorted.
“Because of your poor excuse of a prank,” Logan growled.
“Hey, boys, play nice,” Ami warned. “Dee, Logan’s right. You could have seriously hurt him. In the future, you can’t set it up for him to trip, all right?”
Dee sighed but nodded. He didn’t like it, but he knew that Ami had a point.
“Logan, there’s no need to snarl at Dee. He’s seven, do you honestly expect him to know everything about everyone’s morning routines to ensure that his pranks are safe? He made an attempt to be safe, he just assumed that you would walk rather than run out of your room,” Ami said. “And while he was incorrect in that assumption, he didn’t hurt anyone in a serious manner.”
Logan grumbled but went to the refrigerator to grab the things he needed for breakfast. “Fine,” he said. “But I’m not quite in a place where I feel like apologizing.”
“That’s fine,” Ami said. “So long as you and Dee can come to an understanding in the future.”
Hurried footsteps entered the kitchen behind Dee and he turned to find Roman looking around frantically. “Where’s Vanellope? She was with me last night when we all went to sleep and now she’s not there!”
There was a bark from the den and Vanellope bounded over to Roman, wagging her tail. “Oh,” Roman sighed. “I was worried someone might have taken her away as an April Fool’s joke.”
Logan looked Roman over. “I think there’s a quite different April Fool’s joke at play, here,” he said, fighting back a grin.
“What? What is it?” Roman asked.
Dee was giggling again, as the morning light filtered in and made Roman’s hair sparkle. Roman scratched at his head, only to have some glitter fall on his fingers. He stared at them in shock, rubbing his fingers together. Then he sighed. “Dee, we’ve been over this! Glitter is a prank for bad people!”
“Glitter is a prank for people you want to annoy for weeks,” Dee corrected. “And I wanted to remind you that I can and will annoy you for weeks if I want.”
Roman sighed and turned to Ami. “Now do you believe me when I say we have to lock up the messy stuff so the young ones don’t get their hands on it without supervision?”
“I think you may have a point, yes,” Ami said. “While the prank is relatively harmless, it’s certainly not ideal to be covered in glitter for two weeks.”
“Understatement,” Roman complained, “I’ll have to go to school like this! I don’t have time to shower!”
Logan actually laughed at that. “That should not be as funny as it is,” he said.
Roman huffed. “Okay, sure, go ahead, pick on the fourteen year old, see if I care!”
“Dee doesn’t discriminate with pranks,” Logan said. “I just appreciate what he did to you more than what he did to me.”
“You would,” Roman grumbled.
Dee finished his Pop-Tarts and got off the kitchen stool, throwing the package away. “Do I get to try and sleep again, or should I stay up longer?” he asked Ami.
“Stay up a little longer to observe the fruits of your labor,” Ami said. “Plus, it’ll be easier to talk with you about what pranks you pull if you’re actually alert when we have the conversation.”
Dee groaned at that. “But I didn’t hurt anyone!” he protested.
“You could have,” Ami said. “And the potential for being severely hurt outweighs the fact that you got lucky this time. Because you might not get lucky next time.”
Dee sighed.
Dad walked into the kitchen, scratching his head. “Who moved around virtually everything that I use in my morning routine? I spent a good five minutes trying to find my toothbrush, and it was in the medicine cabinet?”
Everyone pointed at Dee. He waved.
Dad waved back with a sigh. “Well, I can’t really say that I’m not surprised. I do wish that it had waited until I was more functional, instead of first thing in the morning.”
“At least your only got your stuff moved,” Logan said. “I tripped over shrink wrap at the bottom of my door.”
“And I’m doomed to look like a Twilight vampire for the next couple days at least,” Roman griped.
Dad looked around, seeming to assess the damage before sighing. “Clearly, we need to specify what April Fool’s pranks are okay and which ones aren’t,” he said. “Because simply ‘not hurting anyone’ is a bit of a subjective rule.”
“Yeah,” Ami said. “No one’s hurt, but everyone’s a little crabby, now.”
Dad shook his head. “Dee, how long have you been awake?”
“Since, like...three thirty?” Dee signed back. “I haven’t been able to sleep for a while.”
“Okay. Impaired judgement might also have played a part in it,” Dad said. “Dee, you should really try to get some sleep instead of pranking everyone, April Fool’s or not.”
“I did try! I tried for a whole hour!” Dee signed, scowling. “My stupid brain wouldn’t stop thinking long enough for me to fall asleep!”
Dad sighed. “Okay, okay. Probably a poor word choice. Rem, are you okay putting off the prank talk while I try and get Dee to fall asleep?”
“Sure,” Ami sighed. “I was suggesting he should watch to see the consequences of his actions, but he does look a little dead inside already.”
“Yeah, I think he should take some time to sleep if he can. He’s definitely not going to be able to function by the afternoon at school. Do we call him in as sick?” Dad asked.
“Probably a good idea. We all know what happens when he pushes himself too hard,” Ami agreed.
Dad waved for Dee to come over. “Come on, Dee, we’ll see if we can get you some more sleep before three this afternoon.”
Dee frowned, but followed Dad out of the kitchen. “I can get off school because I can’t sleep?” he asked softly, using his voice over his hands.
“Not always, but if you’ve been up for three hours and it isn’t seven in the morning, yet, I qualify that as reason enough to stay home,” Dad said. “Do we need to have a conversation about pranks and how they can hurt people?”
Dee shook his head. “Not yet,” he said. “I think I get it for the most part. I just need to dial it back a little more, I guess.”
“Yeah,” Dad agreed. “And you’ll be helping me get the glitter out of Roman’s bed when he manages to get it mostly out of his hair, so you can understand why glitter isn’t a good prank, ever. Even if someone is annoying, it just makes a deeper grudge.”
Dee sighed. “I screwed up, didn’t I?” he asked.
“Hey, it’s only your second April Fool’s, I expected you to cross a line you weren’t aware of. No big deal, so long as you learn from your mistakes,” Dad reassured.
“Thanks for being understanding,” Dee mumbled. “I still don’t know if I can sleep, though.”
Dad shrugged. “Well, we can find out,” he hummed.
Dee went into his bedroom and crawled under his sheets, pulling both them and his weighted blanket up to his chin. Dad passed him Fangs and said, “Now, I don’t know if this will help or not, but I can always lead you through a guided meditation and see if that relaxes you enough to fall asleep.”
“Sure,” Dee said. It wasn’t like he had anything to lose from it.
“Okay,” Dad said with an encouraging smile. “I’m going to need you to close your eyes, and let your breathing even out. In for four seconds, hold for seven, and out for eight. Can you do that?”
Dee nodded, closing his eyes and following the breathing pattern. Dad barely had to get through half of the scene he was setting before Dee couldn’t even open his eyes if he wanted to. He nuzzled into Fangs’ fur, feeling content enough to actually sleep for another hour or two at least. Sure, he might be in a bit of trouble when he got up, but he wouldn’t have to worry about a punishment. Dad and Ami would be fair, they would never hurt him or ask him to do the impossible.
Dad ruffled Dee’s hair and murmured that he would see Dee in a few hours when he woke up, and Dee was left alone to rest for as long as he needed.
