These days, podcasting is big business. However, this hasn't always been the case. Few people understood what the word meant when it was first coined, and for several years thereafter. Being Perfect
We often fall into situations in life where we want to be perfect or want to be recognized as perfect with our roles and responsibilities.
Stoeber& Childs (2010, p.577) describe perfectionism as a personality disposition characterized by “striving for flawlessness and setting excessively high standards for performance accompanied by tendencies for overly critical evaluation of one’s behavior”.
Although perfectionism has a negative connotation, it has been perceived as a positive personal trait in many societies. Growing up in a traditional South Korean family, perfectionism had a deep root in my life. Until recently, I thought to strive for perfection in everything I do was a good thing, despite the anxiety I had to deal with.
Not long ago, I had an opportunity to learn more about myself and started to realize the harm that striving for perfection can do to my personal and professional growth.
Perfectionists with self-oriented perfectionism tend to focus on being perfect, motivated by their own needs, and set excessively high standards for themselves. Perfectionists with socially prescribed perfectionism believe that other people have excessively high standards for themselves and fulfilling these standards is a condition to be accepted by others (Stoeber&Chiilds, 2010, p.577). Both self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism can lead people to be overly self-critical of their own being. Perfectionism can create anxiety, avoidance, and self-condemnation (GoodTherapy, n.a.). Perfectionists tend to compare themselves to others with unrealistic standards and feel unhappy for others’ success and achievement (GoodTherapy, n.a.). Perfectionism can develop a tendency in people to avoid tasks and situations if they think perfection cannot be achieved. It can also lead people to ignore the important learning process, pushing their focus solely on the result (GoodTherapy, n.a.). Perfectionists develop an aversion toward smart risk-taking.

As Brearley (n.a) points out as below,  perfectionism in leadership in the workplace can be counterproductive and can harm the people and the organization’s culture.
Teams can miss opportunities to innovate, as they are too occupied with the requests from perfectionist leaders. The teams will need to focus on working and reaching complete perfection defined by the personal standards of leaders. There is no room for innovation.
Perfectionist leaders can cause frustration and more uncertainty within the team by demanding constant, unnecessary changes and modification of their work for their own ideas of perfection.
Perfectionist leaders can change the team dynamic by developing the culture of perfectionism. A team with many perfectionists will not be open-minded. The team will be afraid of making mistakes, speaking up, slow to learn from mistakes, and resistant to changes that are needed.
Perfectionist leaders can develop narcissistic behaviors described as below (Mayo Clinic, n.a.). These behaviors can appear when they face criticism and can decrease the morale of the team.
Becoming impatient or angry when they do not receive special treatment.
Having significant interpersonal problems and easily feeling slighted.
Reacting with rage or contempt and trying to belittle the other person to make themselves appear superior.
Having difficulty regulating emotions and behavior.
Experiencing major problems dealing with stress and adapting to change.
Feeling depressed and moody because they fall short of perfection.
Having secret feelings of insecurity, shame, vulnerability, and humiliation.
Maximizing Your Potential
Focusing on maximizing potential helps people be grateful, joyful, and fruitful for who they are and what they do, despite on-going challenges and issues in life. People who focus on maximizing their potential possess inner peace and strength as a foundation.  They have a great awareness of themselves, are not afraid of making mistakes, and are fast to learn from mistakes. They are also comfortable with themselves. Maximizing your potential does not mean neglecting responsibilities in any role they are in. On the contrary, people who strive for maximizing their potential can set goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic& Timely. This creates actions, which hold themselves accountable for what they want to achieve in their lives. They are also not afraid to take a smart risk.
In today’s highly complex, uncertain, and extremely competitive environment, there is a great demand for leaders who can “build teams, keep people connected and engaged, and drive a culture of innovation, risk tolerance, and continuous improvement” (Abbatiello et al., 2017).  These leaders help organizations become living systems. They can “work together, complement each other, and function as a team” (Abbatiello et al., 2017) with a growth mindset. These are leaders who are being at their fullest.

The journey to becoming a leader of “being at fullest” involves developing self-awareness and improving self-management skills. Self-awareness and self-management are inseparable and complement each other.
Self-awareness can help you live a more fulfilling and joyful life while being true to yourself. It will enable you to:
Be authentic.
Be grateful for who you are and what you have.
Reframe your negative thoughts and focus on your strengths.
Be proactively responsive to the situations and people with courage and conscience.
Have inner peace and a positive attitude towards others and challenging situations.
Self-management is about “managing your own beliefs, your judgments, your opinions, your reactions” and “knowing how to conduct yourself ”(ICA, 2014). A self-managed person can put her/himself in the driver seat of their own life. With integrity, trust, and honesty they can set SMART goals and adapt to changes in life by proactively initiating actionable plans and holding themselves accountable.
Self Application
There are different ways that you can develop self-awareness and improve self-management skills. Below are some of the examples.
Developing self-awareness (Tjan, 2015; ICA, 2019):
Write down your strengths and how you want to use and improve them.
Write down your priorities and key plans.
Take psychometric tests.
Ask for feedback about yourself from your family members, close friends, and colleagues on a regular basis.
Improving self-management skills (Indeed, n.a.):
Assess your strengths and use them: Understanding your strengths and apply them. Prioritize your responsibilities and focus on the most critical ones to complete.
Develop organizational systems: streamline your activities using one single source of truth, if possible.
Create deadlines. Hold yourself accountable for getting tasks done by putting structures in place.
Perform one task at a time. Focus your time, energy, and abilities on a single task at any given moment by being fully present.
Take care of your physical, mental, and emotional health: Keep a healthy lifestyle with a healthy diet, regular exercise, and breaks.
Evaluate your progress objectively.
Coaching Application
ICF (n.a.) defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential”. A coach supports clients to create self-awareness and improve self-management skills to maximize their potential and growth. Coaching can equip leaders to develop self-awareness and improve their self-management skills. This transforms the organizational culture and enhances employee motivation and engagement.
Building Trust
A coach, a trusted partner, can support the clients to become aware of their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. As coaches, we believe that people are naturally creative, resourceful, and focus on the whole person (Kimsey-House, et al, 2018).
Active Listening and Powerful Questioning
Powerful questioning can support the clients to create self-awareness and see things from different perspectives (ICA, 2019). It can open up the client’s mind toward other ideas and opportunities. It also supports clients to create their own actions to achieve their goals. Powerful questioning can only happen when a coach is an active listener and fully present, creating a safe space for the client. Coaches must ensure that there are no judgment and assumptions in question.
Effective feedback
Coaches support the clients to develop awareness through effective feedback with no judgment and assumptions involved. Feedback in coaching is simply an observation that a coach has noticed from the conversation with the client (ICA, 2019 a). Effective feedback can help the client get more insight into their thoughts and behaviors.
Self-management
Self-management in coaching requires the responsibility and accountability of both the coach and the client. Both parties are required to be self-managed. While the clients are learning about their own self-management in their role as leaders, by “setting aside personal opinions, pride, defensiveness, needing to look good and being right” and by being fully present for the clients”, the coach can support the client to learn about and improve their own self-management skills (ICA, 2019 b).
Strengths Finder
StrengthsFinder is an internet-based tool that was developed by Marcus Buckingham and Donald O. Clifton to assess personality from the Positive Psychology perspective. This assessment tool focuses on finding the strengths of the individual and suggests the more suitable development paths based on the strengths. In leadership coaching, Strength Finder can help managers to (ICA, 2019 c):
Gain awareness and appreciation of their talents within the context of their role as leaders of people.
Understand how the Strengths Finder themes manifest themselves in the workplace.
Gain an understanding of and appreciation for each team member’s unique and powerful talent.
Gain an understanding of and appreciation for the team’s collective strengths, potential talent gaps, and vulnerabilities.
Use strengths-based development techniques to address specific team-related issues and challenges.

Relationship Post #1: Sara Lance & Ava Sharpe (Avalance)

Sara and Ava have one of the best relationships I’ve seen on television, let alone a wlw relationship. I’m going to list themes in their relationship and examples of each, as to why they’re my favorite relationship 😊
Equality
In the fight scene in S3E2: “Freakshow” Ava and Sara are shown as being evenly matched in their skills, determination, and stubbornness. I believe the writers did this as a way to show that Ava was just as badass as Sara, and someone who can hold her own in life. They start out on equal footing. Neither are seen as damsels in distress.

Throughout season 3, they’re both shown saving the other on multiple occasions. Again, neither is a damsel in distress, and both are very capable women who can hold their own.
Also, Sara being the captain of the Waverider and Ava being the Director of the Time Bureau, shows they are both committed to their teams, and successful women. Both have leadership qualities, so neither is going to be a follower to the other.
In season 4, Ava states neither NEEDS each other, but that Sara is who she WANTS. Again, they’re shown as strong and equal to one another.

Healthy Communication
Throughout the show, Sara and Ava are shown to have great communication in their relationship. In the first episode, Ava asks Sara to move into her apartment with her. They have a conversation as to why that isn’t in Sara’s best interest at the moment. And Ava is completely accepting of this, immediately understanding where Sara is coming from.
In S4E4: “Wet Hot American Bummer,” when Sara presents the idea of using a potion to become kids, Ava’s insecurities get the best of her and she walks away very upset. However the very next scene shows, after some introspection, Ava apologizing for her negative reaction with Sara. She immediately realizes her reaction was because of her own insecurities and admits this out loud. They’re then seen doing a pinky swear as a way to make up 🥺😍

This issue is solved quickly and isn’t dwelled on by either character, nor is it brought up in future disagreements as a grudge by one or the other.
Even in S4E6: “Tender is the Nate,” when Sara comes into Ava’s office for an ‘afternoon delight,’ 😏 and Hank interrupts them, they are respectful of each other’s jobs. Ava tells Sara she knows their team is worth it, and Sara tells Ava she’ll try to tighten the budget. This shows a mutual respect of one another.
In S4E12: “The Eggplant, The Witch, and The Wardrobe,” Sara goes to Ava’s purgatory to save her 🥺. Throughout this episode, they’re seen working through their individual insecurities. Sara’s insecurity, being afraid of longterm commitment and Ava’s insecurity, as being not enough for Sara because she is a clone.

Showing that they WANT each other, not NEED each other, shows they are of equal footing, have healthy communication, and retain a sense individuality for each woman. I’ve seen a lot of shows that make characters feel like they NEED each other to live or be happy, and it was a huge breath of fresh air to hear Ava and Sara say these things to each other 🥰.
In S5E1: “Meet the Legends,” Ava struggles with comforting Sara concerning Crisis on Infinite Earths, which is understandable because that crossover is confusing even for the audience, let alone for Ava to know what to say to comfort Sara. BUT near the end of the episode, the writers have Ava be vulnerable and honest with Sara by saying she doesn’t know how to comfort Sara. This is extremely mature of Ava to admit, and it’s exactly what Sara needed to hear. 🥰 Being able to admit you don’t know what to provide another person and asking them what they need is very healthy behavior.
Jealousy:
Yes, Ava has been shown to be a jealous partner in their relationship. But this is not necessarily or automatically a negative thing as some people believe. Evolutionary psychologists “believe that jealousy is [...] an evolved trait, one that helps people avoid wasting resources on partners who might cheat,” (source). In other words, jealousy is as natural of an emotion to have as anger, sadness, or happiness. What makes it healthy vs unhealthy is how couples handle that jealousy. The times we’ve seen Ava be jealous include:
S3E12 - Ava finding out Sara slept with Constantine 3 weeks prior.
Same episode when she is with Constantine.
S4E1 - Ava says she doesn’t want to talk about Constantine with Sara.
S4E4 - Ava and Constantine snipe at each other before summer camp.
S5E6 - Ava answers Sara’s phone when Rene keeps calling her.
Unhealthy jealousy actions include:
a) Mind Reading - assuming you know what your partner is thinking
b) Labeling - an ex of this would be “ALL women are unreliable”
c) Discounting Positives - hyper focusing on the actions that made you jealous
Every time Ava is jealous, she and Sara immediately solve the issue at hand. We never see Ava act with the unhealthy actions described above. They discuss and she moves on. It’s never brought up as a grudge and they grow each time it happens. I would label this as healthy jealousy. And it’s definitely handled with healthy communication.
Individuality
Sara and Ava are both well established characters with immense amounts of depth. They both have friendships outside of the relationship. For Sara this includes Oliver, Felicity, Ray, Mick, Amaya, etc. And for Ava this includes Nora, Nate, Mona, Mick, etc.
They also both have hobbies (Ava: serial killer podcast; Sara: knife collections, crossword puzzles). They’re often seen being dedicated to their respective jobs, both being successful and ambitious. They are literally the definition of a power couple.
They’re also both super badass and can hold their own in a fight. They don’t need to rely on one another to defend themselves. And it’s especially badass when they team up to kick ass 😎

Togetherness/Supportiveness
While they are established as being individual from one another, and neither is JUST a love interest, they are also very supportive of one another and are always in each other’s corner.

Because Sara and Ava are both leaders of important and dangerous entities, they are able to provide support to one another when the burden becomes too much to bear. Both understand the difficulties the other may be going through. And this is shown a few times. In S3E13: “No Country for Old Dads,” Sara is stressed about Ray being kidnapped and Ava is able to provide her with comfort regarding the situation and help solving the problem.
In S5E2: “Miss me, Kiss me, Love me,” Sara is shown supporting Ava while she’s having a personal crisis of losing her job. Ava’s job has been a huge part of her life, she was literally programmed as a clone to work for the Time Bureau. Even when Ava is making a fool of herself while drunk, Sara completely supports and loves her 🥺. And tries to include her in the mission.

Throughout S5, we see Sara give captain duties to Ava. This shows trust, reliability, and love between them. Sara knows and trusts that Ava can take some of the burden off of her as leader of the Legends.

Becoming Co-Captains of the Legends team does not take away from their individuality or independence because it’s already been well established that they can stand alone as characters. They both still have outside friendships, are able to take care of themselves, and neither are damsels in distress.
If anything, showing that they are strong together and can co-captain shows what a healthy relationship they have. As stated before, it shows reliability, complete trust, love and respect for one another. And it conveys the fact that they are both strong women who are leader types.

I'm getting to know all kinds of people through this post today. So tell me your three fav Fallout characters and a couple headcanons for each!
Oh boy, that's tough to narrow down.
Sarah Lyons: She deserved so much more than being killed offscreen. One criticism I've heard of Fallout 3 is that you aren't really the protagonist, and that role goes first to your dad, then to Sarah, and it's not inaccurate. Imagine your dad leading kid you and your people across a post-apocalyptic continent, settling in the blasted heart of a dead nation, deciding to prioritize the needs of the wasteland over the needs of your insular fraternity and forsaking the leadership's support, causing a schism, and knowing that you are destined to inherit your dad's mess and become the new chapter leader. Sarah's up for it, but when she's alone, she must be tired. She must drop the confident affect and let her fears and doubts and lost dreams creep in for a few minutes, just so they don't crack her open when she needs to be strong. She doesn't journal or record holotapes, out of fear they'd show her as anything less than the savior she thinks her people need. She probably trusts her brothers and sisters in battle, but not enough to ever let them see this. Also? Probably into women, which adds a whole new dimension of squashed desires.
Ulysses: This motherfucker lives in my head rent-free. The fact that you can track his tortured poetic stream of consciousness across Fallout New Vegas and three DLCs that he's not even in blew me away when I first played, and endlessly entertained me on subsequent playthroughs. The idea of Christine stuck in a cave listening to him spout American Civil War trivia in the form of dramatic monologues is enough to sustain me on cold winter nights. If he and the Courier turned out their pockets, he'd probably have just as many random discarded holotapes from their adventures as they do from his. If this man had a podcast, it'd be about the ennui of living in the bones of a dead world power and debating the possibility of various alternate historical timelines. He and the Courier are one of the only pairs I can picture as, once they've met, having no alternatives beyond fucking or fighting to the death.
Nick Valentine: Hands down, the best companion that Bethesda has written so far. I keep meaning to do a Fallout 4 playthrough with Nick as my only companion, just because he's so real throughout the game. Intuitive king, caring friend, Sassmaster General. We know Nick feels conflicted about the implanted memories he's carrying around, but I like to think he's comforted by them sometimes and keeps that fact a secret. I think he wears the fedora and trench coat because it makes him feel at ease with himself and the man that his memories used to belong to. I think he likes Piper not just as a friend and comrade-in-arms, but because the old Nick Valentine was used to dealing with the press and the curiosity of pre-war journalists and Piper is a reminder of this. I think he sometimes passes a ramshackle Slocum's Joe in the Boston ruins, pauses, then goes and sits at a counter stool he recognizes for a few minutes, briefly losing himself in the memory of days he never saw.

The popular conception of chivalry, as a moral code guiding the behavior of honorable knights, is flat-out, laughably wrong. That’s a creation of 19th-century authors like Walter Scott, and the popular fantasy authors (basically up until George R.R. Martin) who built on their worldview in the 20th.
In reality, chivalry was all about one particular version of Guys Being Dudes. Chivalry could refer to a few different things, but the most common meaning was simply battlefield deeds, executed with some style. This, what knights referred to as “prowess,” was at the core of the broader ideology of chivalry: raw, bloody, physical performance, violence done effectively and to an agreed-upon aesthetic standard. The second major concern of chivalry, honor, grew directly out of the first. Honor wasn’t an abstract concept to medieval knights; it was a possession, a recognition of their particular status and place in the social hierarchy, which they were well within their rights to violently defend and assert through their prowess. Piety was the icing on the cake, but no knight really doubted that God approved of their actions.
An oral culture, passed around during training sessions and drinking bouts and feasts and military campaigns, produced this culture and inculcated new knights into it. A whole universe of texts, the kinds of things knights read or had read to them, sent the same message, like this 12th-century poem called Girart de Vienne:
When I see the whinnying war-steeds plunge
With worthy knights into a battle’s crush,
And see their spears and cutting blades well struck,
There is nothing on earth I love so much!
These were dudes who loved getting after it, and for them, getting after it meant blood-soaked deeds on the battlefield. It’s not that there was nothing more to it - sure, there were some bits about romance and ladies, debates about religiosity and moral actions, exhortations to do better - but the core was always physical, male violence. And it obviously wasn’t for everyone: Knights were members of a hereditary military aristocracy, and their possession of chivalry was what set them apart from dirty peasants.
Two aspects neatly parallel modern Bro Culture: first, the emphasis on physicality and the body, and how that provided both a sense of the self and secured social status; and second, the restricted, bubble-like world that produced and emphasized it, with its fictional and real heroes, its stories about great deeds, its values, and its models to be emulated. Your average knight would absolutely identify with and appreciate this impossibly toxic meathead sentiment:
Obviously, there are pieces that don’t neatly parallel, the biggest ones being the hereditary and explicitly military nature of chivalry. You don’t have to be a soldier to be a Bro, though it doesn’t hurt. And - much more important - you aren’t born into being a Bro; you become one, by doing worthy deeds of prowess.
That’s a quintessentially American value: the idea that anybody can make something of themselves if they work hard enough, move enough weight, run fast enough, practice enough to shoot a tight grouping, make the right sacrifices. The physical meritocracy (and its potential rewards of fame and fortune) is open to anyone willing to do whatever it takes to climb the ladder. Even the least intellectually gifted meathead can make something of himself if he does the workouts, takes the right gear, and builds his audience on YouTube and Instagram. Don’t forget to like and subscribe, and smash that follow button.
In a moment of stagnant social mobility, rising inequality, and incredible uncertainty around the future, this strongly visual message of self-betterment and improving one’s socioeconomic status through literal sweat can resonate deeply. It’s all within the individual’s control, if they simply work enough - an antidote to all that uncertainty, everything that’s so obviously beyond an individual’s control and reckoning, no matter how misleading and incomplete the formula actually is.
That’s especially appealing to the many millions of American men who don’t have college degrees (many more of them than women, given the gendered trends in undergraduate enrollment) who are effectively locked out of professional-managerial culture and its straightforward path into the comfortable upper-middle class. Accomplishment through physical prowess is thus a means of building both a sense of self and community.
The connections to this particular moment in American culture and history go much deeper than that, though. This whole edifice of Bro Culture grows out of the broader rise of influencers, performative self-branding through social media, and the construction of identity through consumption.
With the right protein powder, shilled by your favorite strongman, you too can deadlift 800 pounds, or at least tell yourself you’ll get there someday. With the right brand of CBD tincture, which sponsors your favorite Crossfit athlete, you won’t feel that burning pain in your rotator cuff after you clean and jerk too much weight with suboptimal technique. By religiously listening to the right Bro-approved entrepreneurship podcast, hosted by some guy who happened to get booked on the Joe Rogan Experience during a slow week, you too can buy a McMansion in an affordable suburb.
Much of what happens in Bro Culture is driven by lifestyle consumption: ads for sunglasses on Barstool Sports’ Pardon My Take podcast, brand partnerships between supplement companies and YouTube stars, tactical holsters for concealed-carry that an ex-Marine with a million Instagram followers wants you to buy. It’s self-actualization through sponsor codes.
The tactical lifestyle craze, a natural outgrowth of this particular slice of Bro Culture, is the logical endpoint of all this. It’s where entrepreneurial late capitalism and influencer trends meet imperial wars, the militarization of the police, and the emergence of Gun Guys as a default protected class within American society. You’re not a Crossfitter anymore; you’re a “tactical athlete,” doing varied types of interval, cardio, and strength training so you can be a more effective soldier or cop or firefighter or whatever, or you just want to feel like you could be one. The physical training is only part of this, since you can prominently declare your tactical affiliations with a variety of lifestyle products, ranging from coffee mugs to American flag stickers for your car to, naturally, firearms....
Just as much as its coffee, whose quality I can’t speak to, Black Rifle Coffee Company is selling the tactical lifestyle. They offer a staggering variety of T-shirts, hoodies, hats, mugs, thermoses, and stickers, many of them prominently branded with the eponymous “black rifle” of the brand. There are a lot of American flags and pieces of law-enforcement and military iconography, signifiers of the in-groups to whom the consumers of BRCC’s products belong, want to belong, or for whom they want to signal their support. BRCC has explicitly labeled itself as a coffee company for conservatives, an active participant in the culture wars. If you don’t like Starbucks and its effete, refugee-supporting, liberal tendencies, buy some Black Rifle product instead. If you like Trump, you’ll be at home with BRCC. Don Jr. endorsed them.
After the picture of Rittenhouse in the Black Rifle Coffee Company shirt appeared, its founder Evan Hafer quickly disavowed the youthful shooter. Even for an explicitly MAGA coffee company, supporting a teenaged AR enthusiast with blood on his hands was a bridge too far. But Rittenhouse had already been shaped by the world BRCC and its fellow-travelers have made. He got the message, loud and clear: You too can become a hero, or at least dress and drink coffee like one, by purchasing the right products, watching the right videos, and following the same Extended Bro Culture influencers. Don’t forget to like and subscribe.
The Veteran-owned piece of BRCC’s appeal isn’t a coincidence. They’re selling a position in the culture wars, a sense of belonging, but also a particular vision of what it means to be American, a man, and an American man. A staggering number of this part of Bro Culture’s key figures are veterans. Jocko Willink, perhaps the best known (and least openly political) of the bunch, was a Navy SEAL officer; he was actually the commanding officer of the famous sniper Chris Kyle during the Battle of Ramadi in 2006.
After retiring, Willink turned his SEAL experience into a career as a leadership consultant, motivational speaker, media personality, and energy drink salesman. His intensity, built on his military service, is legendary: His exhortations to do hard things regularly, to live by a code, and take responsibility for oneself, resonate with millions of people. And Willink is far from the only one to do so, turning overseas service in imperial wars, especially as a special forces operator, into a key component of his entrepreneurial appeal. This isn’t a judgement on his military service; it’s a statement of fact. Being an undeniable badass is a the core part of why Jocko Willink is a quintessential Bro Hero.
Imperial wars overseas always come home eventually, and they do so in complex ways. The fact that millions of people listen to Jocko Willink, buy Black Rifle Coffee Company merchandise, and dabble in more extreme fringes is a product of decades spent elevating not just military service writ large but violent combat overseas against ill-defined Others. For every Jocko Willink, there’s an Eddie Gallagher, the SEAL who was convicted of and then recently pardoned for war crimes after becoming a cause célèbre for large swathes of the online right.
If these are the heroes Bro Culture puts forth - special operators accustomed to high-intensity, high-volume fighting overseas, who then develop enormous media platforms - it’s obvious what message Kyle Rittenhouse and the innumerable police officers, tactical fitness enthusiasts, and more run-of-the-mill viewers and listeners will take. Millions of people listen to Joe Rogan when he talks to Jocko Willink, Tim Kennedy (the Green Beret and MMA fighter and increasingly open right-wing figure), or Cameron Hanes (who advocated for Eddie Gallagher’s release). They’re warriors. Joe Rogan isn’t a soldier, but he’s a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a former competitive kickboxer, a bowhunter, and a firearms enthusiast. If these are the people at the core of Bro Culture, a culture that directly touches tens of millions of American men, then there are bound to be knock-on effects. If they’re constantly telling their listeners to be ready, to be tactical, to be prepared to fight and to be good at it, that means something.
This is why I think Bro Culture, or at least its extended reaches, deserve more scrutiny and attention. The code of American manhood that’s developing out of this social-media melting pot has some aspects that bear watching: A love of firearms centered on tactical usefulness (for use in what context, exactly?), a vision of muscular physicality, self-defense as a personal obligation, an unquestioning hero-worship of military culture, and far too often, a deep suspicion of people who don’t subscribe to this precise view of being a guy. Support the Troops, and if you don’t, you’re not really a man at all. If cops - quintessential subjects of Bro Culture - are told that they need to be bigger and stronger and quicker on the draw, that they’re basically Troops, and that the targets of violence deserve what they get, what’s the likely outcome of tense interactions between police and the people they’re supposed to serve?

(7) This is the part where I brag about Suzanne Brigit Bird.
I won’t lie….. I might be a little proud of her.
A few reasons why, in no particular order:
Union Sue. So much cool progress was made in the W’s most recent CBA. This current leadership — with Nneka as President and Sue as VP and so many other genius women involved — has set the players up for a lot of success, I think, both immediately as well as down the road. Average salary is way up. Rookie salaries are way up. The max is way up. They locked in family-planning reimbursements, fully paid maternity leave and a child-care stipend. I know how much all of that means to Sue: not just the particulars of the deal, but the bigger picture. The legacy stuff. Sue’s the kind of vet who looks out for the younger generation — who is trying to leave the league better off than how she found it.
Comeback Sue. Don’t fact-check this, but I googled “how many days from september 10th 2018 to july 25th 2020” and it spit out “684 days.” That’s the amount of time that passed between Game 3 of the 2018 Finals and Opening Night of the 2020 season, i.e. the amount of time that my girl spent on the proverbial shelf. Wait. What!!!!! That’s so many days. I almost still can’t believe it. And let’s be real: with COVID, it’s not exactly like Sue was able to go through a state-of-the-art rehab process. Actually, THIS is how improvised it was: With social distancing making it impossible to get real runs in, Sue was forced to train by playing 1-on-1 against……. moi. I won’t share the full scouting report on myself (need to keep a secret or two in my bag), but: You know how, in that interview, Tyler Herro said “I’m a bucket”?? Well — I’m a foul. Still not sure how Sue managed to overcome the adversity of being stuck with me.
Sniper Sue. Fun fact: The Bird is hitting 46.9% from three this year. (Let that sink in.) 46.9%!! That’s her CAREER HIGH. And before you dork off on me about sample size or whatever: This is her second straight season posting a new career high from three. So basically what I’m trying to say is we’re either dealing with a freak of f*cking nature, or one of the best players of all time, or both. I was listening to the J.J. Redick Podcast the other day, and he had Steve Nash on, and Steve was talking about how he sees now that he probably should have shot it more, considering how efficient he was and all of that. But at the same time, he came from this generation where the point guard’s main role was to be a floor general, and a distributor….. and nothing was supposed to get in the way of that. And I think Sue’s sort of built the same way. Like, she’ll go down as one of the best point guards to ever play the game. But I also love how she’s been showing over these last few years that — if she’d ever wanted to — she probably could have been a Steph / Dame type of scoring machine as well.
“This Is 40” Sue. Alright, here’s the deal I’m willing to make — I’ll make it with anyone who wants it. If you get yourself onto the cover of SLAM, accompanied by the headline “ICON”…….. then you can talk about Sue being 39 as much as you want. But until you do? You can’t say sh*t.

Can you please explain your views on pro life and if you believe in traditional marriage? I feel like such an awful person either way - in the world of God I desperately only want to have the right views and the views Jesus knew was right but I’ve spent so much time with people who aren’t religious or just believe in the typical pro choice for literally everything in life I guess meaning I guess and i want to be educated on the right ways but I’m low key scared of hurting people or making people think I’m a horrible person
Lean into Christ. Pray. Spend time in Scripture. This is the only way to truly correct our thinking and help us understand this issues clearly.
I will try to give a very, very basic explanation for these two topics.
Abortion: it is a scientific fact that life begins at conception. At this point, the parents have a moral obligation to care for the child. Think of it this way: a parent can’t refuse to buy food for their child and starve them because “my money, my choice.” For born children, parents not only have a moral obligation to care for their children, but also a legal obligation. We need to extend that legal protection to preborn children. They are innocent and defenseless, same as any other child. Killing an innocent child is wrong. The only time killing is ever justified is self defense. But the idea that abortion is “defense” because the baby is “intruding” on the body is as nonsensical as the idea that a mother could kill her born child for “intruding” on her bank account or in her home. A baby has no capacity to impose its will on you. It didn’t ask to be there. It is innocent.
Traditional marriage: marriage is the reflection of Christ and the Church. While romantic love may be a nice supplemental love, it is not the basis. Marriage should be based on sacrificial love. Men and women each sacrifice in their own way. A man’s sacrifice is through leadership. Biblical leadership is servitude. A man should always be taking into account the best interests of the family and doing what is best for them rather than doing strictly what he wants or what is best for him. He should protect and provide for the family and he should love to the point of laying down his own life if necessary. A Christlike love. Women sacrifice by submitting to the man’s leadership in the same way the church submits to Christ. It is a direct reflection of that. In marriage, a wife is under the headship of her husband, much liek we (the Church) are all under the headship of Christ.
If you would like me expand on either of these issues, I’d be more than willing to answer your specific questions! But stay in the word and keep praying over these things.
There are a ton of other books you could read and sermons you can listen to on this subject, so don’t be afraid to research. But honestly, I think the person who explains it best in detail while also keeping it fairly simple is Allie Stuckey. If you scroll back through her old podcast episodes you can find them. Or if you wanna go on YouTube and search her name along with these topics, you can find some excellent episodes covering these topics! (The name of her show is Relatable).
I just want to encourage you. I know it can be really confusing sometimes. Especially when we’re under conviction and trying to make sense of these things. But keep pressing on and searching! If you are in Christ, these will eventually make sense. We are all in the process of sanctification. Just keep reading and praying and searching!

Vegan Sugar Cookies
    While researching this recipe, I saw an ‘internet pastor’ talk about how women need men to spiritually lead them.  I admit to stumbling down a rabbit hole of anti-woman theologies.  Complaints of the church being too feminine, something I find a bit silly considering Paul calls the church the bride of Christ.  Or the claim of women not being called to preach, and I am not sure what Jesus asked Mary Magdalene to do if that is true.  For this devotional recipe I want to focus on biblical womanhood.  These cookies have been made with love, spite and the knowledge that the church benefits so much from the leadership of women.
   I made sure to make these a few time before posting and it has yielded varying results.  I have found that they do not spread as nonvegan cookie dough does.  So make sure to make them not too thick, and to press them down!
Recipe Time
Ingredients:
The ingredients I used were gluten free as well as vegan.  This is not necessary, but the group I made them for contained folks with dietary restrictions.  I do not think regular flour with gluten will change the outcome.
1/2 cup of vegan butter
1/2 cup of sugar
1/4 cup of dark brown sugar
1/4 cup pumpkin puree (This is the same thing as canned pumpkin.  Be sure to check the ingredient label to make sure it only contains pumpkin.)
1 tsp of vanilla extract
1 3/4 cup of gluten free flour
1/2 tbsp of cornstarch (Some cornstarch has trace amounts of milk, eggs, etc.  Be sure to check the ingredients label on the package.)
1 tsp of baking powder
1/2 tsp of baking soda
1/4 tsp of salt
1-2 tsp (or a small splash of) non dairy milk
Directions:
Add softened butter to a bowl and thoroughly mix it.  You may do this by hand with a whisk or with an electric mixer.  I found that doing this by hand helped me work out the frustration felt when some men mistake their misogyny for God.  If you choose to whisk by hand, use a fork to scrape out the butter that will initially get stuck inside the whisk.  Once the butter is able to smoothly slide out of the whisk, it is sufficiently mixed.
Add sugar, dark brown sugar, vanilla, and the pumpkin puree.  You may whisk this by hand or use an electric mixer.
In a separate bowl; combine the flour, cornstarch, salt, baking soda and baking powder.  Use a sifter to sift this into the butter and sugar mixture.  If you do not have a sifter, you can add this into the butter sugar mixture in small portions.  I did this but using a 1/4 cup measuring cup.  For this, it is best to use an electric mixer because the flour makes it very difficult to mix by hand.  Be sure to NOT over mix it.
Add 1-2 tsp of non dairy milk, or add a small splash.  Mix in with a spatula or a fork.  When the dough is done it should be soft.  If the dough is crumbly add a very small amount of milk.  If the dough becomes wet add some more flour.  The dough should either be slightly sticky, or not sticky at all.
Chill the dough in the fridge for 45 minutes or so.  You may also let it chill overnight.
While it is chilling you may work on the icing if you choose to add it.  (link for icing coming soon)  Or I recommend supporting women of the faith while you are waiting.  I love Brenda Marie Davies’ online presence through her YouTube and Podcasts. Preheat oven to 350.  Place wax paper on a baking sheet.
Once the dough is chilled, take a regular spoon and scoop out portions of the dough.  There are two ways to smoosh the dough into a cookie shape. (A) Roll the dough in your hands into a small ball.  Use your fingers to press the dough into a cookie shape.  It should be two inches (or two knuckles) in diameter and between 1/4 and 1/2 of an inch thick.  Or (B) you can roll the dough into a small ball.  Place on the baking sheet.  Dip the underside of a glass into sugar, and use that to smoosh the balls into the cookie shape with the same dimensions.
It is okay to place the cookies close together, as they will not spread out much. Bake for about 13 minutes.
     I love this because so many vegan recipes focus on being “healthy” and I do not have health in mind when baking cookies.  These are a great, sugary option for folks who can’t have gluten, eggs or dairy.  These cookies are also halal and kosher.  If you know any of the ingredients to be otherwise, please let me know.
     Praying for everyone to know that biblical womanhood is not an example of submission.  It is Jael putting a stake through the head of a tyrant  (Judges 4:17-22).  It is Rahab being a sex worker who harbors spies (Joshua 6:16-17).  It is Esther who lies to her husband to protect her people (Esther).  It is Junia in her apostleship (Romans 16:7).  It is Mary Magdalene, who was called by Christ to be the first person to preach the resurrection (John 20:10-18).  It is an example of leadership that the church depends on.

M: It's good, it's good that it's nice to reflect on it. Jen, you mentioned the athlete mentality and sort of bringing some of that in and just talking about teams more generally, what do you guys feel is sort of they key ingredients to the best teams? The best teams you've ever played in or seen in general? Cause I totally agree, like the things that you learn as a footballer, you can translate into life, into business uhm and we all have to work in different types of teams, don't we? Football, business teams, even with your family, you could call that a team. What would you say are the best key ingredients to the best teams?
J: I think for me, the single biggest thing that I always come back to in terms of teams is just an understanding that everyone is different I think like, I know that sounds really basic and probably a little bit too simple, but like people are such complex people and girls even more so. And I think if you try and think that you know, there is one way of being a professional footballer, everyone is in their own lane running their own race and you have to have a level of understanding that you know, everyone does their own thing differently. As soon as you start judging people for doing something differently or maybe their opinion is not the right thing then that's when a team can go of the wrong track. I think you can always have a standard of professionalism and a right level and when someone drops below bring them back up but as soon as you start judging, or they're not doing this or not doing that, as long as these people are performing and working hard towards a common goal, let them be their own person. I think that for me always is the biggest thing.
L: Yeah, I totally agree. You can find that sort of harmony in the fact that.. that's what Joe is quite good at,in terms of the level of freedom that we have within the team is good, he doesn't expect you to conform, he wants you to be who you are, it's just about how you can make it work for the team. You're not being the best version of you for yourself, your doing it so the team can win. I think it's really interesting, especially at Arsenal, we've always had uhm, I've always had the captains that I've been under are always quite introverted people I'd say. Uhm Kelly (?) definetly was an introvert, Alex Scott was more , she's just good for other people, whatever other people need her to be, she can deliver on that. So that was a great thing but I don't think she was like some crazy hyped up, you know, captain, kind of vibe. And Kim is the same, she is such an introvert but there's so much power, that lies in that and I think when you have that version of a captain I think that really filters down into the team as well. And what sort of way you're gonna develop as a team, different people can work for different teams but I think in our team we're quite a reflective, like Jen says, be yourself, be exactly who you want to be, nobody's forcing you to be anything different but it's just about delivering for the team when it matters so when you can find everybody being true to themselves but also being the best version I think that's literally a recipe for success.
M: Yeah, that's great. And you also mentioned leadership and it being a key one as well? We've had Jill Scott and Steph Houghton on our first episode of the podcast and them talking about leading and leadership and what that means. And Jen, I guess you lead your team through your battle with cancer uh as well, you know in some ways, so everyone can lead in different ways. And Abby Wambach talks about leading from the bench and things like that. And speaking of leaders, your uh, your coach left Shelley Kerr didn't she? From Scotland, your national team coach. Thoughts on that? Erin Cuthbert and Rachel Corsie mentioned her as well, after your heartbreaks of WorldCups and Euros, which I don't want to rehash again but uhm, thoughts on that? New leadership, anyone coming in or?
J: Yeah, actually Corsie might be a better one for that question. She's obviously in the captains role and knows a lot more of what gies on behing the scenes and who's next to come through. But Shelley Kerr obviously made the decision to resign with two games to go, obviously we can't qualify and it is dissapointing, like we obviously got to a WorldCup, got to the Euros and now we haven't even made the playoffs so something needed to change. But I still fully believe, that we're a great group of players and the squad depth that we have right now is amazing, it's just such a good group of girls, unbelievably talented . You know I hope, whoever comes in next can bring us to the next level again.
M: And you mentioned too, Lisa Evans and Kim Little who are your Scottish teammates on the Arsenal team. And Leah: Phil Neville's leaving! Slash left. And Hege Rise id coming! What are your thoughts on that?
L: I don't know uhm much about Hege or the assistant we got appointed either for the time being. So it makes me feel quite anxious cause you get comfortable with the coach and you know them and they know you and all of the sudden you're auditioning again and so that's quite nerve-racking.
M: But maybe your band practice will help with that.
L: I will take my piano into every meeting and trying to make a good impression. It's so exiting, especially with the Olympics this year with team GB but for England with the Euros and the squad that we have. I don't know who wouldn't want to be involved really and uhm I don't think that's biased, I think that's true to the talent that we have at the minute uhm and the depth of the squad so it's exiting times. I uhm, like I say, I'll continue to just be nervous over here in the corner and trying my best uhm yeah, it should be fun.
M: Yeah, it sounds awesome. Uhm, quick one on Arsenal, I just thought it's interesting that you said Leah, that you'll never leave Arsenal or that you're sort of Arsenal through and through and you know, you like that mother role in the team. But would you ever leave Arsenal?
L: It's a hard one because when you're younger and I'm a hopeless romantic anyway so I was sold on the fairytale of one woman club. Is that it? One club woman?
M: On woman club would be hard in football!
L: But yeah, just it means a lot obviously, it's not just a game of football for me, I don't wanna be cliche but my family support Arsenal, when I watched their reaction when they watched the men. It was like I have a job to do, I actually am involved in the womens and I wanna win because we're fans first and foremost uhm but when you get older you realise that your football career is so short and so it's one of those like, if something wasn't working, of course I would have to consider to look elsewhere. And it's one of those where my life is Arsenal so yeah. It wouldn't be an easy decision. But I think it's, there's beauty in staying true to yourself and being loyal to and sticking to what you believe in. And I've always said that winning a trophy at Arsenal whether it be one in my whole career or twenty would mean ten times more to me than breaking records elsewhere. So I don't know it's quite hard thing to weigh up and I don't think in womens football we have many cases of it. Just because of the nature of the game and how it sort of changed so uhm yeah I'll always take pride in the fact that you know I'm here and trying to do my best everyday for the club that I love. I have no doubt I'll be turning grey soon for all the stress cause I feel everything a little bit more I think uhm so yeah, I don't know, it's a hard one. To say, you know, never say never but.
J: Basically she's never gonna leave.
L: I'm sold on the fairytale also so it's uhm yeah. Who knows?
M: Sensitive soul.
L: I have, I was trying to hide it . I obviously didn't do it very well.
M: I don't think you can with Jen around. What makes Arsenal so special for you Leah, and for you Jen?
L: I think for me it's, I don't know, it's family, ehh my dad is a Sp*rs fan and when I was younger I obviously had the choice to choose between one or the other. I went to a Sp*rs game, my first game was a Sp*rs game but I just, I don't know, the feel at Arsenal. I've always enjoyed the fact that we do things better than other people in terms of classier and I don't know, things have changed in recent years with the mens first teams sucess and stuff but I just hope that never changes cause that's what drew me to the club first and foremost. It's just different, it's just run differently it always was run differently. It's just this like small club feel about this giant successful football team so yeah that's what's special, that's what alwas has been special for me so I hope that never gets lost really.
J: Yeah I think for me like growing up playing football as a kid, Arsenal for me were that team you know, mens and womens. Mens, they were the invincibles and the womens team you had Rachel Yankie, Kelly Smith, Jane Ludlow, all these people just absolutely dominated the womens game. Like that team was kinda like what made me want to play football. And then when I was 18, Arsenal were the club that gave me the first opportunity to play semi pro and to move away from home so it's kind of, they maybe got that soft side and always kinda had that. Basically we're just emotional. Yeah like, they gave me the first opportunity when I was 18 and I always had a soft spot for they are an incredible club and Joe Montemuerro is just the icing on the cake for me.
M: Yeah, that's really cool. My favourite club was Sunano in Sweden in the very very northern part in Sweden. And everyone was like "Why did you go there?" and it was growing up in the US, going to college and the university system which is super competitive. American sort of competitiveness and then going to Germany where, as you mentioned, you know they kinda look you up and down for the first six months and they're like "Uhm I'm not sure about this one" until they welcome you in and then you are kinda like family but it was hard culture for me and very difficult to speak the language. And then going to Sweden it was just like ,"Oh my god" it was utopia it was just like, welcome arms? It felt like a family, we said that a lot, that team was really special and it's why I stayed in the northern parts of Sweden when it was dark for months on end. Don't know how but the only reason was I think honestly was just because we had such a nice family.
L: I think it's so important like, you can always think the grass is greener, that's how I see it. You can always be like "Ahh they look like such a good team over there." Like they're really successful and they're having a great time, and it's like until you just feel it. You know, from the outside when people judge your career in Germany or Sweden would they judge it higher just because it's Germany. And you know actually to you it meant so much. It's just different and I think you really can't, I think if you're happy somewhere you should really appreciate that cause I really don't think the grass is greener. And I think especially in football when things can change so quickly, you chase something that somebody else has it's not a good position to be in. Like what matters first and foremost is you, if you're happy, if you're comfortable, then you're gonna be the best version of you and I suppose in every decision in your career, what matters in the end result. Do you want to be the most decorated footballer of all time or do you want to have had a career that sort of fulfilled you a bit more. I don't know, I think you can get really deep into it but I think you being yourself is most important. So many people chase the career of somebody else and it's not a good path to go down.
M: Career slash life. Football is just a metaphor for life isn't it? It seems like you guys have such a cool vibe, together, with you little fourpack and with your team at Arsenal and it's just been so fun hearing and for you to sort of welcome me into your family. The Paradox of Equality - and its Relationship with Equity
A note about the article before we begin: This essay is hella long with 1.2k words, and there’s a tl;dr at the end if you don’t want to go through the whole thing. 
If we’re looking to establish absolute, true equality, I can first tell you that true equality does not exist. The best thing we can do is to improve the circumstances of the ‘oppressed’/those suffering from inequality so that their psychological wellbeing improves. 
Why does true, absolute equality not exist? Let’s break down the term ‘equality’. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, there are various different definitions, which all tries to skirt around what most people might want equality to be. The closest definition, however, would be this: ‘a situation in which men and women, people of different races, religions, etc. are all treated fairly and have the same opportunities’. 
The first part of the definition seems easy enough to understand. ‘Men and women, people of different races, religions, etc.’ points out the various different groups of people who might be living in inequality, and hence suggests that they should have a right, and consequently need to achieve equality. However, the second part of the definition seems a bit daunting. What does it mean to be ‘treated fairly’? And what does it mean to ‘have the same opportunities’? 
When reading the definition, it is likely that you would already have had a broad idea of what being ‘treated fairly’ is. Be it established from consuming modern media (e.g. books, television, podcasts), or people around you, it’s ultimately subjective to the person’s interpretation (i.e. it’s different from people to people). It is because the term ‘fair’ is ultimately subjective. A way to make it objective would be to provide a ‘guideline’ of what would be deemed ‘fair treatment’. For example, fair treatment could mean forbidding someone from being held in slavery/servitude, which is Article 4 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 
Furthermore, having the same opportunities is also subjective. In which context do you have same opportunities? I think the general consensus is to have the same opportunities since birth, and the same opportunities in all circumstances. But that is impossible. You can’t control where people are born, and in what kind of families people are born. Furthermore, you can’t guarantee same opportunities in all circumstances, because it would mean controlling people’s thoughts, desires, personality types. It would also mean restricting people’s choices in order to guarantee that the opportunities are actually equal. It shows that equality is circumstantial, but generally impossible. To actually carry out equality one would have to identify the scope, the context in which equality would be. But that would defeat the ultimate objective of equality, because it’s not equality ‘at all times’. 
The problem of equality is also paradoxical, because to ensure equality you need someone, or a source of authority to enforce such equality. Otherwise people would do whatever they want however they want it, and there would be no equality. (Think about a Lord of the Flies situation?) However, if there is an authority figure in place to guarantee equality, then there is no equality because of the power hierarchy. This paradox is why it makes equality impossible.
Let me first address the problem of having an authorial figure in place to keep equality. Initially, this might seem to be a good idea to allow a single leader to give out equal opportunities for everyone, especially if this person is wise and knows what they are doing. But here’s the thing. If only the real world have such wise leaders who could make such informed decisions. In fact, in reality these authority figures would probably give the people a smaller share of the resources, while keeping more for themselves. For example, North Korea (which claims to be socialist[1]) has had a long record of political corruption, where the common citizens starve whereas the higher echelons of the government enjoy luxurious lives. Because equality in all circles of society is required/guaranteed, it means that jobs are mandated. Since citizens can’t move up the social ladder, there is no threat to the government. Therefore, with absolute power, politicians/leaders would inevitably be corrupt, perhaps even more so than ‘democratic’ societies. 
So how do we ensure equality (absolute equality, I think, would be a better term to be used in this argument) without authority figures and no one ensuring such equality? The simplest answer to this question is anarchism. Anarchism refers to the political belief that there should be little or no formal or official organization to society, but that people should work freely together. By getting rid of a leadership organization altogether, it gives a chance for equality at the bottom - for the common people. But once people are left to their own devices, it’ll probably be Lord of the Flies all again, and would likely result in the rise of yet another leadership - who knows. 
Furthermore, equality can sometimes damage the situations of those it’s meant to improve. Equality, as established above, means to give the same opportunities to everyone regardless of background. This might work well on discrimination based on race, gender or other situations where people have no physical barriers to success. But what if the people as established are facing handicaps? Imagine a situation where a man in a wheelchair, and a man with no physical handicaps, and they are both given the ‘same opportunity’ to go up to the fourth floor of the same building through taking the stairs. They are given the same opportunities, yet this benefits only the man with no physical handicaps. Giving equal opportunities to everyone with no regard to situation is not only unequal since people aren’t treated fairly, it also worsens the problem of inequality and discrimination. A real-life scenario where there are equal opportunities but does not benefit everyone would probably be the education system, where neurodivergent children are forced to study under the same conditions as neurotypical children. 
So far I’ve established the fact that true equality is not possible. What should be in place then? How could we improve people’s lives, and improve inequality? The best answer to this would be equity. You probably have seen this cartoon before:

This gives a glimpse of the difference between equality and equity, in which not everyone is given the same opportunity, but rather the opportunities that would suit them. Equality had been proposed because of increasing discrimination, as a means to reduce such inequality. However, if we ignore the circumstances surrounding individuals, then providing the same opportunities might very well widen the inequality gap. Hence equity would be the best solution to solve the problem of inequality. One example would be progressive taxing; the more money you earn, the more taxes you pay. By taking into account the monetary ability of individuals, this would allow wealth inequality to decrease. Hence equity would be the best solution to the discrimination and inequality problem instead.  
TL;DR: True equality doesn’t exist, advocate for equity instead.

My take on feminine enbodyment and female empowerment
This concept of modern feminism and pushing men out of the picture affects me differently than the average woman, because I was raised without a dad. When my mom adopted me and my other siblings, she never got married and instead asked her best female friend to step in and help raise all four of us. I was very loved, but I felt that absence of a father all my life. It affected nearly every part of my childhood and teenage years, and it continues to affect my adult life. I wanted to get a boyfriend and eventually get married, but the only constant guy in my life was my older brother. Therefore, I had very few examples of what respectful, good, masculine men looked like.
When I was a sophomore in college, my roommate at the time showed me a YouTube channel called Blimey Cow, and they had made a video called “Ten Ways to get the Right Guy to like You.” I hadn’t thought about this video or this channel in a few years, because they primarily make Christian content.  I’m not a Christian anymore, nor do I agree with all the beliefs of Christianity. However, I decided to go back to this video two days ago, because I remembered how these creators directly challenged how our culture defines female empowerment. Specifically they used this video to present that challenge, with an emphasis on noting the difference between female liberation and female objectification. Some of the suggestions they made to help girls find the right guys included showing interest in their hobbies, supporting their local chivalry, letting the guys in their lives know they appreciate them, putting less emphasis on how much skin they show and more emphasis on who they are as a person.  As a 20 year old college kid, these young content creators made a bigger impact on my views on men, women and the hyper-sexual movement than I would have thought. As a result, their video gave me the nudge to dive deeper into this topic through writing.
When you first learn of the term “female empowerment”, it sounds attractive enough: women being seen as a force to be reckoned with, authoritative, strong leaders who are goddesses in nearly every way. Rather than being stuck at home to take care of the kids, women are encouraged to pursue their career dreams, step into more masculine leadership roles and “be the boss”, for lack of a better term. It all sounds appealing until you start to dig deeper into what’s behind the phrase “female empowerment.” One big part of how I discovered this occurred last summer.
In July of 2020, I chose to invest a serious amount of money to an online holistic sex course. It was called Well-F*cked Woman, created by a woman named Kim Anami. Through using the tools learned through this six week course, Kim claims to have helped thousands of people all over the world, especially women, to connect with the untapped power of their sexual energy. She believes that a big reason why people are as stressed, unhealthy and unhappy as they are is because they’re not having the right kind of sex. Moreover, they’re not having the right kind of sex often enough. Whether you’re in a couple or single makes no difference. If you want to gain body confidence, get orgasms or even heal ancestral trauma, Kim claims this course would teach you how to obtain all those things by utilizing your sexual energy.
When I read the information on it, I became very intrigued. After several days of listening to her podcasts and reading her blogs, I became more convinced that this course could be a big help for my personal well-being.  At the time, my goal was to use the course to heal some of the imbalanced sacral energy I still had. Hopefully, it could even heal some ancestral wounds I carried in my DNA. If I achieved that, finding a romantic partner would be more of a bonus than a direct goal. So when I received the stimulus check from the government, I used that money to pay for the course and one of Kim’s jade yoni eggs.
For each of the six weeks, we would get a video with a written syllabus to discuss different topics, most of which revolved around sex. One week we would focus on self-love practices, one week we would talk about the relationship between sex and money, another week we learned about food, etc. In that first week, I began the exercises easily enough. However, I also started to feel very conflicted about the information we received in this course. For example, in the syllabus about self-love, one of the first statements Kim made about women is that “most have rape fantasies.” Admittedly, I didn’t really understand what that meant or what it was, until a friend told me. Once I did understand it, it bothered me deeply, to say the least. As someone who claimed that her work helped heal women’s sexual trauma, to hear Kim make such a statement right off the bat made me feel uneasy.
In a separate journal, I had written down my progress of the course and some of the conclusions I had made about what it taught and about the woman who taught it. In one entry, I had observed that it seemed to take a lot of money to become a “well-f*cked woman”, by Kim’s standards. If needed, it could possibly add up to hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. For instance, if you wanted to use a jade egg as a sexual healing tool, that cost $300. The six week course itself cost almost $1000. Kim also recommended using therapy injections to change your neural pathways, if you were a victim of sexual trauma.  Just getting one injection is expensive enough, but if you “need” more than one injection or appointment, that will add up fast. Sadly, such treatments are not easily accessible to everyone who wants sexual healing. It certainly wasn’t for me.
Additionally, a recurring message that came up in the course was that it’s important for couples to have sex more than once a week. In this case, it wasn’t talking about the faster paced sex described as being numb and fleeting. On the contrary, Kim wanted us to aim for the slower, orgasmic, breath focused sex where you’re working to maintain and build up a flow of sexual energy. While in some ways, this course educated people on sex differently than our modern culture, some aspects seem pretty similar to me. For example, one night stands are still seen as acceptable situations to practice generating this energy. We were encouraged to practice sex acts two to three times a week, to the point of becoming sex addicts. Also, even though Kim frowned upon pornography, we were still taught to utilize BDSM as a way to create polarity in our relationships. This was to make sure that “spark of passion” was maintained for the long term. Lastly, Kim would sometimes demonstrate problematic double standards when it came to showing examples of how to respect your partner. In one of her stories about “helping” her partner become confident with himself, she talked about making a point to touch his private parts in public, whether he was okay with it or not. If not, she claimed “it was his problem.” In my opinion, if they’re genders had been switched, she would have been called out for her disrespectful behavior immediately among the group.
In this class, Kim discouraged us from using substances like alcohol and drugs during the practice, because of how they damage the body. On the other hand, she promoted addictions to sex as something positive, as something to attain for as a human being. Whether you are in a couple doing the act or you’re a single adult who’s just masturbating, you were encouraged to have some kind of sex several times a week. According to Kim, it needed to get to the point where you felt you couldn’t go about your day without generating this energy. “What an addiction does is that it causes you to stop thinking,” says Michael Knowles, who was a guest on the Candace Owens Show discussing modern feminism.  “It enslaves you. It makes you prone to certain behavior, and when you’re not thinking, that’s when the people who want to grab power can come in and force it on you.” Too much of anything can be detrimental for your well-being, on all levels.  During a time where protection of boundaries for my spiritual life had become very important, this way of thinking pushed me to discover what kind of boundaries I had and to stick to them. In this case, it lead me to the conclusion that if being like Kim meant being addicted to sex, disrespecting the men I care about, and using methods of sexual control for the sake of “polarity”, then I would rather not be like her at all.
With all that being said, I believe the big question is this: how exactly does the WAP culture of free sex and female empowerment differ from the holistic sex culture I learned about in the summer of 2020? How does our pop culture differ from the Well-F*cked Woman course, in how we’re being educated about sex? In my opinion, one culture pushes the more superficial, fleeting benefits of sex in our faces, while the other pushes for using sex and sexual energy as a way to harness untapped power. This power can, supposedly, be used to energize us, heal our bodies, and manifest things into our lives. Regardless, both cultures seem to be more concerned with using sex to gain power than using it as a means to express true love.  Both cultures seem to encourage women to “embrace their femininity” by leaving their underwear off more often. Both cultures seem to promote double standards on how partners should respect each other and their boundaries. Both cultures still push us to become addicted to sex in order to have a fulfilled, happier life, because according to them, every aspect of our lives will disintegrate without it.
As a result of the lockdown, last year turned out to be most isolating time for us, and it was intense enough to put many people into a deep state of depression. At a time when everyone is stuck online and forced to keep further apart, this is when people in the online sex business—holistic or otherwise—will benefit the most from that loneliness. They can use it to make those profits and fill their own pockets. This becomes more obvious when you observe their marketing tactics, including the ones I noticed for Kim Anami’s website: unless you give me your money and do what I tell you to do, you will never be “well-f*cked.” Everything in your life will deteriorate unless you become “well-f*cked.” You will be a brainwashed zombie forever, easily manipulated, unless you become “well-f*cked.”As my friend Lee Yun would say, “These tactics are designed to create an empty void in people that can’t be filled.” In the cases of some individuals, even if they were to try, it would cost them more time, money and energy than they were lead to believe.
For those of you who wonder if I still keep up with the practices I learned from this course, I haven’t. At least, I haven’t kept up to the degree that would be necessary. My jade egg is sitting on my altar collecting dust, even as I write this. Because of the amount of money I spent to buy the egg, this is not something I’m proud to admit. A jade egg is a sacred, special tool that deserves to be put to use for the highest good, and eventually, I will find a teacher that can help me do so. I just don’t want to have to conform to this holistic “WAP” standard to get there.
Surprisingly, by reflecting on my past through watching Blimey Cow’s videos, I realized there are still some values about sex, intimacy and femininity that I learned as a teenage Christian that matter to me now as an adult witch. In my opinion, sex is something very sacred that should not be taken so lightly, because of how it connects you to your partner in an intense, physical and spiritual way. For me, I take it seriously enough to still choose to wait until I get a husband and to choose not to masturbate. Additionally, when I do have sex with my lifelong partner, it will be as much about him as it will be about me. This means respecting and honoring him as a man as well as I know how. In my opinion, if you encourage people to use something like sex to attain higher spiritual goals, but neglect to show basic respect to your partner’s boundaries about his body, then in the words of Jordan Taylor from Blimey Cow, “you’re doing it wrong.”

I also introduced the Dr. Margaret Roger's Van Coops, Founder of the SumarisCenter.com into a strategic alliance with the HolisticChamberOfCommerce.com and SelfDiscoveryMedia.com. Then, doubled her LinkedIn contacts. And, then... got her on a radio interviews on SelfDiscoveryMedia.com, another with about 225K international listeners, and one with about 22,000 listeners too. I also got her featured on TheLiteraryGoddess.com podcast, Dove and Dragon Radio, "Living and Thriving with Rustie: Rustie MacDonald," "Strive 4 More" and "Create with Trip Elix" radio shows/podcasts. This was done at a private closed door workshop for Women Entrepreneurs. The event was a StartUp Bootcamp put on by a city's major Venture Capitalist firm owned Nonprofit. And, gave an inspirational talk at their other company M/I Productions based on the topics of what they were into at the time of delivery.
