imagine you're a kid.

and you meet a kid at school. and maybe it's easy at first and you have a friend! and then you have to leave. but that's okay. it's okay because it's gotta be

then you meet another kid. at another school. and maybe you become friends! but you leave again. 'cause that's just how it goes

another school. another kid. another friend. leaving again. and you keep on leaving. and you keep on trying. until maybe one day you just quit it. because you know in a few weeks that you'll be gone again. so you put your head down and you get through it. and maybe you're tired of the pit in your stomach when there's no kids to play with and nothing to do but it's better than the pit in your heart when you've gotta say goodbye again or don't get the chance to.

and you get through life like that you really do. because family's all that matters and even if you watch your little brother make friends and get his heart broken all over again it is what it is. at least you've got each other. until you don't. because you're stuck here and you're still stuck here and you're in school and on a wrestling team and your charm can get you far enough that maybe. maybe one day you forget that you're supposed to be faking that smile or making excuses and you have friends. hell, maybe you think you're close to having a best one.

but you're just a stupid kid who lets yourself get carried away again so when you leave in the middle of the night and don't get to say goodnight you decide that's really it. because you think you're gonna die if you ever get so close to somebody again

and even when you're alone and there's no one telling you where to go except your own hands on the wheel and the occasional phone call from your dad. that doesn't change. you've got buddies and you've got girls. and your heart still inevitably breaks and you figure it must just be because you're a weak thing. that's just how you are. right?

then one day. you're pulled from the earth

and he gets you and it's terrifying. holy shit he's weird. but he's something else. and even if he doesn't understand you and you don't understand him. you start to know each other

and it creeps up on you, really. there's a lot that happens in the perpetual end of the world but when the words roll off your tongue it feels obvious. best friend. what else? he's there and he always comes back and he smiles for you and makes you laugh and is your best friend and shit. shit this is what you've been missing. and you lose him. you lose him over and over and over again but something's switched in you because god it's worth it. it burns and rips you to shreds and you kneel and you cry and you beg and you're so goddamn weak. but you have a BEST FRIEND and you need him and you love him and any pain he causes you is allowed

and you weren't supposed to let yourself have this. but you need him more than everything
