Hello from the Netherlands! 🇳🇱😺 Remember my moto friend @david2africa I made in Serbia? I’m very fortunate to have been adopted by his family in Holland and to have the privilege to be totally immersed in how a Dutch family lives. It’s a luxury for me to have a meal with his family at a real table instead of sitting on the gas station sidewalk. I’m so grateful for them taking this dirty scruffy biker off the street. Traveling how I travel truly makes me appreciate the little things. Its a part of the reason why I intentionally travel a bit rough, I want to put myself through the hardship so I don’t take things for granted. Does anyone else choose the more difficult path to keep their ego in check? In 1798 werd gestart met de bouw van het droogdok Jan Blanken in Hellevoetsluis. In die tijd was Hellevoetsluis een van de twee belangrijkste marinehaven en de marine had een dok nodig voor het onderhoud. Het dok bestond uit twee delen, een voor onderhoud en in het verlengde een voor de bouw van nieuwe schepen. Voor het openen van de sluisdeuren werd een van de eerste stoommachines in Nederland aangekocht. In de jaren 1880 werd de originele sluisdeur vervangen door een imposant exemplaar van geklonken ijzer. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog vertrok de marine definitief en kwam het dok in particuliere handen. Het dok raakte in zwaar verwaarloosde staat, maar werd in 2005 volledig gerenoveerd en is nu te bezoeken. —————— One of the most imposant docks in The Netherlands is Jan Blanken at Hellevoetsluis. At the end of the 18th century the Dutch Navy needed a larger drydock. Hellevoetsluis was the first and a later was build at Den Helder. For opening the large doors one of the first steammachines was bought in England. In the 1880’s the original wooden doors were replaced by the enormous iron door. After the dock had gotten in terrible state a large renovation was done in 2005. Op Schouwen-Duiveland bereidden de Duitse bezetter zich voor op een geallieerde aanval. Op het hoogste duin van Burgh-Haamstede werd, als onderdeel van de Atlantikwall, de Walvisbunker gebouwd. Dit was de grootste bunker van het eiland en vanuit deze bunker werd het hele eiland onder controle gehouden. Om de grote bunker heen liggen zo’n 40 andere bunkers, waarvan er een aantal bezocht kunnen worden. Nu is de bunker een bijzondere plek, met een mooi uitzichtpunt over het duinlandschap dat beheerd wordt door Natuurmonumenten. Voor kinderen is het een spannende, avontuurlijke plek die het bezoek meer dan waard is! ————- As part of the Atlantikwall in Burgh-Haamstede a large bunkercomplex was build. The largest one was build on top of the highest dune. Because of its shape and size it was called the whale bunker. Nowadays the spot gives a beautiful view over the dunes.
