hi friends! i hope you're doing well :) with all the great big changes to larkin, I'm putting in a final call for beta-testers and readers for both the five chapter demo-version of larkin to be released on April 29th, 2024 and the final version of larkin to be released on April 29th, 2025.
apologies I'm putting out another form, the first call went through and ran into some creator-error as a lot of the contact information got muddled, so i wanted to put forth a new call hoping to hear from testers old and new. I'm looking for about 25-30 players, as Larkin has grown significantly in chapters (20+ chapters) with several major plot routes and romance routes added, so I need a lot of thoughts and feedback on it.
if you could do me a favor and fill out this form, I'll be responding early next week.
*note, if you've already been selected as a beta-tester previously, don't worry! I'll be shooting you a message within the next few days.*
Larkin: Resurrection is the first in a series of text-adventure games that relies heavily on player choice. A vampire western, the game takes place in the fictional town of Larkin, Nevada, where you the player step into the shoes of the player character--or The Preacher. The Preacher, apprentice to the prolific vampire hunter, Wyatt Abrams, and one of the last remaining survivors of the Vampire-Hunting Cult, The Abrams Family, is suddenly thrust into the position of Town Preacher for Larkin. Demons from the players past seem to chase the Preacher--only made worse when the local mine explodes--and you're at the center of the conspiracy.   Larkin is rated 18+ for themes of gore, violence, religious trauma and sexual implicity.  The demo of the game will be released, April 29th 2024, with the slated release for the final version of the game, April 29th of 2025. Once betas are selected, the demo version of the game will be sent to players April 1st, 2024 -- testers will have one month to go through the text and collect feedback.  Playtesters and beta-readers will be tasked with playing through and reading the content of the game, testing for coding errors, and giving thoughts/feedback on their personal experiences with the text of the game. Testers will be selected based on experience, and willingness to explore different avenues and choices of the game.

Commissions
Tumblr media
Hey folks, this is an update to my Ko-Fi, and it's coming out because I'm getting more and more requests to review Scots dialogue and lend my voice to various projects. This is a simple way for me to earn a little bit from the work I put in. It's a 'pay what you can' with a minimum of £5. However, obviously depending on the size of work that might need to go up a bit. Anyway, here it is to use and abuse:

Hey! I've been thinking, and I'd like to open commissions for: beta reading/critique, editing, and writing commissions. Please comment if you'd be interested in any of this, and DM me if you want to talk about my experience in any of the above skills. I would also like to mention that I already have a writer (and friend) who is commissioning me to beta for them, and I am very excited about that! The writer in question is @wandering-wolf23 aka K. Ramsuer or C. A. Wood. Please reblog if you think any of your followers may be interested in my services. Thank you <3

BETA READERS call
Between the rewrite and the next chapter being planned, I am finding myself in need of help once again. I will not make a selection of the people who would want to apply as I did the first time.
Anyone who wishes to join the discord server and work as a beta reader is welcome to join my Beta Knights. However, I ask of this from anyone who is considering this:
You will need to be on discord. I find it much easier to work with, as you can also have a discussion with other betas.
You don't need a perfect knowledge of english (I mean, mine definitely isn't), because in addition to grammar checking I am also in need of people who can comment on the structure of the story, the coding or just willing to offer somewhat in depth commentary on it.
I don't require constant involvement in the discord. However, I will need my betas to work updats in a span of around 10 days. This requires you to be relatively active in those periods of time (which, frankly, will probably happen about twice a year, given my update schedule)
If that is something you are willing to commit to, I would be very grateful to have you as one of my Beta Knights. Here is the link to the discord server:

Beta reader = an editor who looks over your work for grammatical errors, sometimes helps you with plot
Concrit = constructive criticism left in comments regarding grammar, typos, and other easy, good faith fixes
"Loved the work! By the way, you misspelled Dimitri's name in the seventh paragraph of the story." = concrit, spelling is not subjective
"I liked this a lot, but I don't think Dimitri would have said something like that to his friends in the second chapter." = not concrit, characterization is more subjective

Hey, folks! I just had to quit my new job. Its "flexible hours" (a requirement for my physical disabilities) were actually over-managed deadlines that required a 7-day work week and it was untenable. So! As an income-less person, I'd like to put this out there:
I'm Offering Alpha & Beta Reading Services
Why me? I have a degree in Creative Writing. I was gainfully employed as a professional writer for 6 years. I have been published in literary journals and was a founding editor of a literary journal that I helped run for years. I have a 1,200+ page serial that will start to be released in the next 6 months and I just plain love stories.
Alpha Reading
Alpha reading is geared toward Zero Drafts or First Drafts where the creation process is still a work in progress. I'm reading as a writer who wants to help make your story work. As an alpha reader, I'm not worried about your grammar or spelling--just the content. My job is to cheerlead you through this first draft while giving helpful, gentle notes as a fellow writer. We'd nail down exactly what sort of comments you want or don't want but it can look like feedback on:
Plot structure
Pacing
Description
Setting/world building
Characterization
Dialogue
Spotting plot holes/continuity issues
You can also request no critique if what you really need is just someone who will read your draft, leave encouraging comments, and get excited with you.
Beta Reading
Beta reading is for more polished drafts from writers looking for constructive criticism on how their wip reads. I'm approaching your story less as a writer and more as your test audience. I will be honest but kind about issues and genuinely excited about your victories. Again, exactly what you're looking for can be nailed down on an individual basis so you get the type of support you want. (Note: I am not a line editor. I can point out obvious errors but that is not what I do.)
As far as pricing, $0.0015 USD per word seems like the lower end of the industry standard and, while I have alpha/beta read before, I haven't been paid for it yet so that feels fair. That works out to a 25K word story being $27.50.
Thanks, all! Please DM me if you're interested.

Meanwhile, over on le blog:
Beta reading can transform an idea into a polished story—but old-school writing tools aren’t up to the task.
How can writers and betas streamline their collaboration and overcome the mess?   ... We @ Ellipsus have some ideas! 👀

Listen, if you're a writer and you're not getting feedback online, I have two things to say to you.
You're certainly not the only one who's experiencing this. If you see other people talking about not getting comments, feeling inspired, lacking beta readers: Don't be afraid to reach out. I'm not saying give yourself to 50 people as a beta reader because that's a ton of reading (but if you're down, congratulations, you have a bunch of stuff to read now), but there's never any harm in sending a DM or an ask or leaving a comment with a little "Hey, I get it <3" yk?
Try searching irl. If you're online because you lack an irl support system and online isn't working for you, try looking into writing events in your community. There are writers and readers for everyone out there, you've just got to find them.
Anyways, there's my two cents. I've just been seeing a lot of people talking about this and as someone who's writing Instagram is lacking I am in the same boat, so, yeah.

Beta Readers Wanted!
My YA sci-fi fantasy novel The Secret Portal, Part One is READY FOR BETA READING!
At about 106k words, TSP Pt1 is about a group of young preteens and teens discovering a portal to another dimension called Alium, full of people with powers and a group without powers. With extremists on both sides, war has plagued Alium for decades, and they are in need of change. TSP is planned to be a five-book series.
The following form is the application for beta reading. You will give a gmail so I can grant you access to the document, answer questions to see if I need your specific knowledge to consult (not a requirement), and understand the content warnings of TSP to see if you're okay to read about it.
I don't have a time limit yet, so even if the next few months are hectic, I am willing to be very flexible.
If you cannot apply for any reason, please reblog anyway so this gets around! Thank you!

UK transmasc friends! I’m writing a short story wherein a character has a brief conversation with a doctor at a GP where some HRT/transition related stuff is mentioned, and since I haven’t gotten that far yet, I’d love some advice/feedback on just getting the dialogue right, mostly around what kind of language is used and how the doctor speaks.
It’s a short scene in a story that’ll probably be about 3/3.5k when done. The scene itself is under 500 words. I have a hard deadline of Feb 29th—currently the rough draft will be finished tomorrow, and a clean draft done by the start of next week, though I’m happy for folks who’d just be able to look at the one scene to see it early.
The story itself is a light contemporary horror piece, featuring dental horror/dental anxiety. (it’s called HRTeeth, because I like to think I’m funny)

Hi!! I always love what you write, so I'm very excited to see whatever this secret project is! But for now I do have a question about beta reading. How did you break into it? For a long time I have thought that I would enjoy doing that for different people, and I like that kind of fine-tooth comb editing work. But I am not a writer myself, just an avid fic enjoyer, so it feels like I can't quite bring as much to the table or meet other authors in a mutual kind of way. And I would never want to imply that an author needed that extra help or anything like that by just cold reaching out to them. Sorry that so much about me haha, I'm not necessarily looking for any advice (though if you had any I would certainly take it) but I am curious about how you got into it and what your experience has been like! Thank you!!
Hi nonnie! Thanks for the ask!
Can I just say to start with, that as an avid fic enjoyer, you absolutely can meet writers and other creators in a mutual way! Everyone has a place in fandom and something to contribute. It would be a very lonely world for creators if people weren't there to enjoy what we make (and hopefully tell us what they're liking those things). Personally, I appreciate readers so much and I especially love seeing regular names pop up in my inbox 💖💖
As for how I got into beta reading, it started back when a pal in Schitt's Creek fandom was writing a fic and worried that she was going to lose motivation to write it so I offered to sit in the doc and cheer her on. Please note that my motivation for doing so was entirely selfish because it meant that I had early access to the fic that I desperately wanted her to keep writing 😅 that eventually turned into me beta reading that fic (and all of her fics after that) for her.
I started beta reading more frequently in RWRB - I'd signed up as a beta reader for an event, but around the same time I also got to know other writers via a discord server. Sometimes people would ask for beta readers and I'd volunteer - I'm still a tiny bit dirty that @three-drink-amy snagged the beta rights to bleedingballroomfloor's baseball boyfriends fic right out from under my nose even though she is far better qualified than I to beta read a baseball fic - so much so that she helped me with the baseball scenes in my rwrb lawyer au lol (please know that I love them both dearly, there is no internet beef here).
You say that you don't want to reach out to writers and imply that they need assistance, but honestly, sliding into people's DMs and letting them know that either I'm very interested in X fic that they're writing and would they like someone to beta read it or that I'm available in general to help if they want it because I love their writing is how I've ended up beta reading for almost all of the writers I do that for!! People are generally just thankful to know that someone is interested in their writing! It can be a lonely hobby sometimes and having someone to live in your docs or send snippets to can help balance the need for wanting to talk about your fics with someone or bounce ideas off someone and wanting to keep what you're working on under wraps.
God, this is getting really long, I'm so sorry. I've been rambling and I'm not even sure that I answered your question.
You asked what my experience has been like and for the most part, it's been very positive! I get early access to fics (I often say that my favourite way to read a fic is in google docs 😂), I get to cheer my friends on and sometimes they even trust me enough to let me throw ideas at them and write them into their stories - sometimes I even get to do this without actually doing any editing and that's just as fun. I love beta reading, I think there's something really special about being trusted with the draft of someone's writing and getting to help make it the best that it can be (what that involves looks different for every writer I work with). 💖
And all of that doesn't even touch on how much I learn from the writers I've worked with - it's definitely helped me improve my own writing!
