⭐Glow up - transformation for the better 😍 Tbh I feel my art & I are constantly evolving & growing BUT there was a big shift for me when the pandemic first hit. With all my work put on hold there was space to create freely, without limits & totally be myself in my art. This resulted in creations that led on to multiple opportunities! 🙌 💕It sounds cliche to talk about being brave, following your heart & being yourself but that's largely what made this transformation / glow up happen & be so successful. 💕 For a while I had dulled myself down creatively to not be 'too different' & to fit more neatly into existing boxes. Coming back to creative freedom & totally embracing my authentic self in my art was / is so liberating, exciting & benefits my work a lot. 🙌 😍Here are photos of me last year at the 'Euro Celtic Art' exhibition in Lorient, France. I was asked to represent the Isle of Man which was a huge honour and involved solo exhibitions from each of Celtic nation artists which formed the overall exhibition. 🧡Highs & lows... I guess the highest highs link in with the purpose of my art. It's great winning competitions & awards, getting special commissions and widespread recognition though my heart sings very loudly when I see/hear about the positive impact my art has on others. 🧡 🧡Sometimes these positive impacts are extremely powerful like helping someone to heal, giving someone peace, changing an important perspective and / or empowering someone. 🙌 🧡The lows? There are a lot of challenges in work like mine. Alongside the usual trials of self employment for a non-essential product, you're also impacted by unhelpful cultures such as the 'starving artist' myth and scarcity model. 😮 Who knew? ❤ Going through ancient work from an art school trip to Paris I realised my passion for pattern started a VERY long time ago - much, much earlier than I thought! I was clearly captivated by the patterns in balconies, lamp posts, lights, trees...etc back then. Our tutors encouraged us to sketch repeatedly throughout every day of the trip - I'm so pleased they did even although it was hard going at the time! 🎨 💫 Have you had any surprises when you've looked back? 😍🎨 Looking back at very old work! Do you ever reflect on the things in your life that have changed & the things that haven't? 🎨 I appreciate looking back on my work over the years because it demonstrates where my head, heart and art were at during the time each was created; together they show my journey and development. 🎨 I've been reflecting on just how many aspects of my art now were evident many years ago, particularly in student days - I'm thinking the large amount of creative freedom and bravery I had back then could be part of it... and maybe our heads and hearts don't really change all that much?!? 😍 Surprise pic! ❤ I hadn't seen this photo until it popped up whilst googling this week - I really like the vibes in it! 😄☀️ I had x3 talented photographers photograph my mural and I at different stages of the project. 💫FULL CIRCLE - here's a blast from the past, I'm 16/17 yrs in this photo and had just finished a mural for our sixth form common room. It's funny how things come full circle! ❤ I came across this photo by accident and it immediately made me think about my current work, mainly female portraits with patterns and an expressive pop art vibe - even eyes regularly shut! 💫This mural was based on a Roy Lichtenstein piece in the 60s, I was given free reign for the project and chose this. I studied Lichtenstein's work in my early art education along with the work of Klimt, Kahlo, the Pre-Raphelites and Modigliani just to name a few; all of which you can find traces of in my art today! 💫Talking of my art today, the next photo is from a recent mural project MANY years later - can you spot the links? This mural ended up being featured in the @telegraph too. 💫I say coming full circle as I went a different direction for a while - which I'll explain about more in another post! 💫Anyone else realised some 'full circle' things in their lives? 😍 A year on I still regularly get sent photos of people with the mural I painted by the seaside in Ramsey (which I love ❤) though this is the first animal photo! 🐾 Painting this mural, the way dogs reacted to the big painted cats was interesting - and sometimes VERY noisy. Some were excited by them, some barked & tried to chase them, some tried to say hello with wagging tails & others seemed oblivious to their existence!
