This week I have seen the annual Papaver somniferum (opium poppy) flowering in gardens and in an urban setting by a major road. The flower colour is variable with shades of red, pink, mauve, purple, white and nearly black. The seed capsule enlarges after flowering making a decorative feature for the winter.

In the shelter of a warm, south-facing wall with free-draining gravel this Iris unguicularis 'Peloponnese Snow' (Algerian iris) was covered in delicate flowers. This evergreen, rhizomatous plant has purple flowers in the species so this cultivar is very distinctive.

If you're having trouble getting seed to germinate in the most fertile of soil, try this: scatter some seeds in an area that contains lots of gravel. It will happily germinate in the cracks and crevices between the gravel bits… Even the cracks in your driveway for some reason are quite hospitable to seeds like poppies, verbena bonariensis, and golden feverfew. Maybe not where you want the plants to live permanently, but the gravel seedlings can either be transplanted elsewhere, or allowed to go to seed... and this second generation seed and the new, probably abundant, seedlings can be relocated to a more permanent spot where you ultimately want it to establish itself.
