The role of the shark in our oceans is to keep our ecosystems healthy and in balance! This is critically important as over 50% of the air we breathe and over 70% of the food we eat comes from our oceans! Without sharks our Oceans would collapse and this would cause our own demise as well! So why have we allowed shark populations to collapse? Greed for money! Although our species claims to be intelligent, we are the only species that destroys our only home! Presently over 90% of the large sharks are already gone and over one third of the shark species are listed with some type of endangered status. We must end their needless slaughter! It has been the deciding factor in the Bahamas as well as the other countries that have the insight to be proactive in Marine Protected Areas (mpa's) all over the world. Presently less than 4% of our oceans are truly protected! 15 years ago it was .01% Unfortunately our species is to greedy for money and caring for our only home, Earth doesn't seem to matter to very many people! This saddens me greatly! Our planet was incredibly beautiful and full of life when I started diving and exploring our wilderness as a child! So when I read about or actually have the pleasure of meeting a like minded conservationist of kindred spirits it brightens my soul and gives me more hope that we can alter the course of our planet to a sustainable direction! Open season on Goliathath grouper? If you can't eat them why would you kill them?? What are your thoughts everyone? @jim_abernethy 📷 ・・・ The death of Goliath Grouper as a species may happen very soon, if we all don't get out and speak for these majestic friendly creatures! FWC is having hearings to allow you to speak up for these incredible fish! Fisherman say this fish is eating all the fish and they speak in greater numbers than divers so far! Let's change that at these hearings! Science completely disagrees: 1. A 2010 Florida State University research paper found that the Goliath Grouper was still "Overfished and Critically Endangered!" 2. Another research paper by Sarah Frias Torres Ph.D shows that that overfishing not Goliath Groupers is the reason for declining fish and lobster stocks. 3. In 2016 a panel of scientists rejected a stock assessment saying the stocks had recovered, because that survey was li.ited to just one small area. 4. Current analysis of stomach content by University of Florida shows 85% of their diet are crabs and 15% are slow poisonous fish such as puffer fish, catfish and stingrays...not game fish. 5. Florida State University researchers found and published a paper showing that reef fish abundance and diversity is actually higher when goliath Groupers were present. 6. Dr. Chris Koenig studies reveal that the poisonous mercury levels of up to 3.5 ppm far exceed the level of 1.0 ppm where the sale of any fish is prohibited! At .5 ppm the Natural Resourses Defense Council recommends we avoid eating these fish because of the well known documented effects of mercury poisoning. 7. Dr. Silvia Earle says that "killing the Goliath Grouper would actually be killing the growing economic benefits derived from divers who want to see these Iconic animals who are often as curious as us." So why in the world would we ever want to allow the slaughter of these sentient creatures? Please repost this everywhere to help Goliaths! I hope and pray that everyone will start thinking about all fellow Earthlings and start doing everything we can to save them as we celebrate our beautiful planet! A very beautiful & large female tiger shark, graces us with her presence at the world's best Shark diving location worldwide Tiger Beach! "Worth More Alive" has been the very best wildlife conservation campaign for me for decades! Simply put, if you want to help an animal you love, go and see it and you will increase the value of the animal alive vs killing the animal! However there are some problemsthat still won't allow the creatures we love to be saved. The poachers will always look at the short term financial compensation and kill the animal! If proper laws are not in place to protect the creatures we will still loose them legally! Such is the case in Florida, where the Shark Fin Trade has been banned from traveling through the state, but the sharks are still being legally targeted by commercial shark fishing industry for their fins legally! The shark diving ecotourism industry brings in 220 million yearly while the shark fishing industry brings in roughly 160 K. In the Bahamas where I am right now, their brilliant leaders specifically from, The Bahamas National Trust protected their sharks country wide on July 7, 2011. This generates 120 million annually! So in my opinion, if any of our fellow Earthlings are to have a chance at continuing to exist in the future, it will mostly be because of the value of the alive! A beautiful lemon shark rest peacefully with it's mouth wide open allowing a remora to clean the lemon shark of parasites. This is a perfect example of a symbiotic relationship where the remora gets to eat the parasites and remove them from the shark so that both creatures benefit. This was 1st discovered underneath our shark expedition vessel Shear Water over a decade ago by Howard Hall and the imax film crew making the film Deep Sea 3-D". In those days the lemon sharks were still pretty much afraid of us and didn't do this close to us but now that they are receiving love and affection on a daily basis from my guests as well as my crew they are much more relaxed and this happens all the time!
