It's species name comes from the words albus, white, and margo, margin, and it is obviously a reference to the species' white fin edges. They're endangered in nature due to habitat loss and plantation construction.

Betta albimarginata

My family group of albimarginata have been doing well! Since they’re all in the 23G, I haven’t had much luck with spawning because I haven’t been able to see and/or catch holding males. I’m thinking I may soon separate out some couples to try and get more spawns. I really like these guys and have been keeping them for over 4 years now.

Disclaimer: These bettas are a different species from your regular pet store betta (B. splendens) and can be kept in groups, given enough space and coverage. While they will posture and nip at each other, the most damage they ever cause is a torn fin or two, which heals quickly.

Betta albimarginata pair. Female is the top, male is the bottom. Multiple videos of them courting and breeding but no computer to upload the HD videos yet. Mobile is not the greatest on video quality from the dslr. I’m not sure if I will be bringing these back home when I return. The pair was technically given to the person who is housing my fish/inverts until my return but he said either the pair or offspring is fine.

Hey! I recently went on aquabid and they had a section for wild bettas. They're really pretty and cool and I was wondering if their care was different? Some people are saying you can keep them in groups but I don't know if I should trust that. Any links or advice on keeping them?

And wild bettas are very VERY cool! And their care can be different depending on which type of betta you want to get! I would research each specific species you’re interested in before buying any! And there are deff some bettas that can live together like Betta Albimarginata tend to do better in small groups. Others have people who say they can be kept together but word of mouth and experience has others saying they can’t. Like Betta Smargdina Guitar. Others deff keep alone! Like Wild Betta Splendens and I’m pretttyyyyyy sure Betta Imbellis.

I’ve never kept wild bettas so this is just what I’ve learned from listing to @iantojonesthebetta ‘s nerdy wild betta rants 😂😂 (jk I’m always happy to listen to them) but anywho I would deff venture over to him for advice! I also know that @finandleaf has bred Betta Rubra. Sorry I forgot about this ask and wishing u loads of luck in research! If you do end up getting wild bettas I wouldn’t mind being shown some pics of them 👀

ohhh, now we can have some fun. 👀- wild bettas: albimarginata reverse trio/pair, mahachaiensis pair, dimidata/pugnax group(there's so many more wilds, hit up @wildbettas)- 12-14 micronemacheilus cruciatus- 12-14 "pygmy" cories (habrosus, pygmaeus, or hastatus)- pair of licorice gouramis (parosphromenus sp.)- harem of sparkling gouramis- group of heterandria formosa, girardinus metallicus, leptolucania ommata, or poecilia sp.- 12-14 small rasboras (lambchop, chili, phoenix, strawberry, etc.)- 12-14 small tetras (reed, ruby, ember, jellybean, etc.)- 12-14 small pencilfish (1 inch and under)- small group of rainbow/orangethroat darters- a single mottled sculpinthe 12-14 figure factors in the different methods of getting your fish. when i'm buying mine from across the US and having them shipped to me in iffy weather, i prefer to get a few extra, just in case of DOAs. same applies to rare fish that i might not have a chance of getting again. if you're buying them in-person, though, stick with around a dozen! on a side note: if you want to make your aquarium super pretty, set aside some money for a CO2 setup and a good light, like a Current Plus Pro. (the root tabs and dry ferts are cheap.) your plants will grow quickly, and they'll look gorgeous and lush. you can keep almost anything short of giant swords. especially carpeting plants. monte carlo, HC cuba, staurogyne repens, glossostigma elatinoides; water sprite, ammania senegalensis, pogostemon helferi, rotala mexicana, rotala macrandra, bolbitis heudelotii, pygmy chain swords, marsileas; the sky is the limit.cost-wise, a 5 pound aluminum CO2 tank from eBay will be $50-ish; a used dual stage regulator will be $50, or a new CO2Art PRO-SE regulatator will be $120; and a Plus Pro would be $100-ish. (if you can get away with it, a 2 foot 4-bulb T5HO aquaponics lighting fixture will only be $40 on eBay. i greatly prefer those. they plug right into the wall.) it's so unbelievably worth it. upgrading my tanks was the best fishy thing i've ever done. take the step.

Feesh, what’s your favorite betta coloration/fin/body types?

Ooh, hard to choose.

I like crowntails because they tend to move more freely, and I also like the ones with slightly shorter tails and fins so they can act like fish. The longer-finned ones can be gorgeous, but I like my fish to move. Not a fan of the Dumbo-ear ones. 

The fish in my icon is Bismuth, one of the prettiest bettas I’d seen in a long time. Never could photograph him right, but he looked just like his namesake, this nice shimmery metallic color overlaid with greens and blues and a hint of light purple depending on how the light hit him.  I tend to prefer blues and greens and shimmering colors. 

I also really like wild-type bettas like B. albimarginata.

Fish Update (I’m still alive):

Just wanted you guys to know, lol, if anyone’s still out there.

A lot has happened in my life lately, including a big move! I live in a very small, isolated town now with NO pet stores and shipping ANYTHING is really expensive, but I’m still determined to enjoy the betta hobby however I can.

Right now, I still have:

Two of my three original Betta smaragdina girls, Pandora and Orion. They’ve gotten a major upgrade from the Betta Trio (which only had an estimated 2 gallons of space per section) to a divided 10G. Orion especially seems to be loving it and is more active than ever! They’ll be 3 years old next month.

Nine Betta albimarginata. They’re all between 1 1/2 and 2 years old. I had 12 at the time of the move but have lost three since moving here. One had dropsy even before I moved, so I’m surprised she lasted this long (and was feisty right up to her death). The other two may have been stress from the move. They haven’t been spawning but I suspect that’s mostly because I have no access to frozen foods right now. However, I’m culturing grindal worms and hope to get daphnia shipped to me soon. Some family are going on vacation shortly and will pick up frozen foods to bring home to me. The albis share the 23G still with panda corydoras (4 years old) and Amano shrimp (around 2 years old). My panda corydoras have dwindled away to just three, but I ordered some to hopefully be shipped next week. Fingers crossed they’ll survive the shipping.

One Betta siamorientalis named Mare. She’s still doing good, though has had a tumour on her side since I got her in November. She’s about a year old now and is also in her own divided 10G. The other side of her tank is empty, at this time.

I’d love to get a couple more bettas but space is limited right now since I’m staying with family. But I hope to be able to finally get my own house in the near future, so... FISH ROOM!

Researching fish inbetween bouts of puking. Next on the list: a betta albimarginata pair. There's something about the rusty shade of their scales that captivates me, though I did also consider b. brownorum and b. pallifina as well. If they really can live in a 10g, then I'll start looking once I do The Big Move (lotls into a 55g, kuhlis into the 20L, 10g will be empty). @iantojonesthebetta you have b. albimarginata (your babies are what sparked my interest). If you were getting a pair for a species tank, and it would be just them, what size tank would you get?
