Being a new fishkeeper is so dangerous. There are so many cute, aesthetically pleasing, and cheap aquarium ideas all over tumblr, pinterest etc. But so many of these are abusive to any fish.

These are all examples of tanks that look really neat but the fish will waste away and die early. No heaters, no filters, barely enough room to move, and too little enrichment. I firmly believe that the smallest tank for a fish is 5 gallons. It's always better to get a bigger tank and have a happy fish than to get a small tank and risk the health of your fish! 😊👍

Please sign this petition if you think Petco should raise their recommended minimum Betta fish tank size in their "Betta Care Sheet" from 0.25 gallon to 3 gallons. Even PetSmart recommends a min of 3 gallons.

This would be a small but significant step towards countering pervasive Betta care myths.

Update on Kobe

Kobe is a rescue Betta brought from an abusive home. He lived in a .5 gallon tank with no filter or heater.

It's been around a month since I picked him up and he's such a character. He's super friendly, but in the bad boy way, where he loves you, but flares at you to show you how cool he is 😎. He's still growing back his fins and he is still on the skinny side, but with some love and care he can be a fish that lasts for three or more years!

I want to find him a forever home, so if you want to bring this amazing boy into your life I will give you his 10 gallon tank as well as his filter media (to put in your own filter). I live in St. Louis, Missouri, and I'm willing to drive ~1 hour to deliver ze baby.
