#beyond brio scenes
Note
Ok! Here’s my Question of the Day, and it’s about the “You’re not supposed to be here.” scene. The smugness radiating off Rio is like level 10. Dean is shocked. And Beth (I think) is praying he (Dean) doesn’t make seen, in the midst of Rio observing a very domestic exchange (of vehicles) related to Dean & Beth’s family plans.
Tumblr media
What do you think Dean, Rio, and Beth are thinking as this exchange occurs and how do you think they each feel about this exchange after the fact?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This scene is so funny! I am convinced that by season 4 they decided to just go full list of tropes on us. Like, they heard all the complaints about a lack of romance-typical tropes and just gave them all to us. Brio + Dean in a smug, defensive, confused, jealous standoff is everything! Look at Rio’s face. I’m 💀😅
I personally don’t think Rio has anything major against Dean. Yeah, he shot him and beat him up, but that was one time (lol, nbd) and had more to do with Beth than Dean. To me, Rio is so far beyond the likes of Dean, has so little respect for people like Dean, and thinks so little about Dean as a legitimate sexual rival that I wouldn’t even say Rio’s feeling particularly smug about his involvement with Dean’s wife. Rio simply doesn’t care about Dean. At all. He doesn’t care how he treats Beth, either. I just don’t see Rio getting all protective and offended because Beth allowed herself the complacency of staying married to this underwhelming, room temperature man. If anything, I would say Rio feels disdain for Dean being the type of man who allows himself to be steamrolled by Beth and not giving her a challenge – the way Rio is giving her a challenge.
So that being said, in this situation I would say Rio is tickled pink about making Beth squirm. While he doesn’t give a crap about Dean, he is unreasonably irritated by Beth hiding her true self from everyone but him. It seems to bug him to no end how she lies to herself and others. So having Dean come in and and see her “naked” – that is, in her true depraved persona – no doubt makes Rio downright giddy. His whole performance is for Beth’s benefit, not Dean’s. He doesn’t need to emasculate Dean. He already doesn’t view Dean as a man. What he wants is to emasculate Dean to Beth. Much like when he dropped that line about their dead bedroom in the pool table scene, where he said outright he knows Beth isn’t sexually attracted to Dean, he wants to really dig it in for Beth that she’s in a sham of a marriage and is unfulfilled by every aspect of it.
Beth is almost near tears. Dean snuck a peek behind her mask. She tried to put it into place as quickly as she could – pitched up her voice, played up her Midwestern accent, used her suburban pleasantries… But Dean saw her. She had no idea how long he’d been standing there and now much of her “Boss Bitch” persona he got to see. That Beth, (the one who’s Elizabeth,) isn’t for Dean. So having Dean see her like that rattled her neatly compartmentalized life. You can see her draw the little boxes and deny deny deny, even to herself, that she wasn’t just in foreplay mode with her crime husband. “Please, just go.” She needed him to leave so she could put her mask back on properly. Rio’s right to be amused by watching her do this. Her scramble is fascinating.
Dean is such a uuuuuggghhhh. I don’t know why he’s still baffled that she keeps going back to Rio. What evidence to the contrary has she given him over the course of these events? Maybe I’m being overly critical of Dean because he isn’t the first person ever to be gaslit into trusting despite reason. But Beth has been really honest with him in many instances. Yeah, she also was extremely dishonest in many other instances, but any reasonable person could see she was in it deep with whatever shady life she got into and she kept going back despite saying she wouldn’t. This all speaks to how staunchly Dean refused to see her. He absolutely would not allow her a sense personal worth or identity beyond someone who serves him and his children. So in this scene Dean is betrayed and baffled. Because for whatever reason he believed all her lies and refused to see the anguish on her as she came home and told him, “We got him.” Who in their right mind sees their wife return home after betraying her long-time lover – a lover she’s admitted to REALLY liking having sex with, a lover she could never let go of no matter how much she claimed she wanted to – sees her tear-streaked face, hears her shaking voice, and thinks to himself, “Yep, she’s given him up. She’s all mine again.” In what universe is Dean living?
So basically: Rio’s amused, Beth is exposed, and Dean is a dope.

Hiiii! I was wondering how would you rank the seasons of GG? ☺️
Hey Anon! Thank you so much for thinking of me here. I’m not great with formulating run on thoughts into words but this is the scattered web my brain weaves when thinking about good girls from best to worst.
Season 5 – Yes, I know we didn’t actually get to see it lol. But in my world, s5 would have been Beth finally realizing Rio has intense feelings for her and with the shift in their (mostly her) dynamic, she would finally have the headspace to realize the same. I think future seasons could have seen AMAZING things with Beth and Rio working together instead of against each other. The anarchy they would have created would have probably been unmatched. They’d be running Detroit for sure and just like ficland, they would have branched out and probably into Canada. I’m picturing Beth out in the community, getting her hands dirty and Rio taking full advantage, just watching them drain everyone around them of everything they have. Watching the city burn together. Then, Beth in Nick’s old office at his once desk with Rio getting her on top of it and just, WE WERE OWED THIS SCENE. They’re definitely crime soulmates and the chemistry was insanely palpable. 🥵🥵
Season 2 – Because well…. Season 2. 🍑🍆. Do people still use these? I feel like they don’t. Anyway, the bathroom scene. The ‘vette scene. The bedroom scene. Rio’s apartment. The couply bickering. It was all just chaotic and them, sooo peak Brio. Rio had strong and fresh feelings he obviously didn’t know how to handle, and he really just let it all hang out which he didn’t do again in the same forceful way until s4. He was consumed by her and so LOUD about it, it gives me chills just to think about. He would have given her the world if she would have paid attention. Also, Mary Pat? I get salty because she had the guts I wished Beth had all along. She was ok with pretty much anything she had to do to support her family and Beth could have taken a page or two out of her book.
Disclaimer that the s2 ending had me considering putting s2 at the bottom of the list but luckily for me I’m good at dissociating and compartmentalizing. 🙄
Season 1 – Season 1 started so strong and mildly stroke out to this day when I think about the energy of Rio’s scenes in episode s1e1. He was chaotic and magnetizing, but mostly just…unexpected? The soundtrack in s1 was bomb and Beth’s look was off the charts… prooobably why Blazerville USA in s2 sucked so hard for me. She had this vibe in s1 of revenge and fierce female anger that was perfectly reasonable given the situation and I was here for it. The writers got amnesia over the summer though and that was pretty much all gone from there on out. Also, s1 Beth actually had a personality beyond exhaustion and overconfidence. I think back to Beth telling the whole story about how she went back to Canada and her van was full of paper and Ruby and Annie just 😳😳🤯🤯 until Beth lost it. Why didn’t we get that more? It was endearing and humanizing in a way they forgot to commit to in later seasons leaving Beth unrelatable and dry at times.
Season 4 – Season 4 had some unexpected goodies, but the therapist and dean pretty much ruined most of it for me. Dean had WAY too much screentime with his little buddies and I think everyone here must remember how I feel about Dean. The therapist storyline, was that supposed to develop Annie’s character? Because it didn’t. I’m imaging sending her to jail for a few months “over summer break” doing 100x more than making us sit through 10 episodes of her obsessing and entangling with her therapist before finally presenting him with a dead smashed-up butterfly and checking out. What in the actual fuck was that?  The best part of s4 to me was getting to see parts of Rio that we obviously never got to see before. They still missed the mark completely on developing him as a character and I’m not even going to get into all of that right now, but meeting Rosa and Nick gave Rio a layer that I was deeply missing before. They again missed the mark on developing the brother/cousin thing and I think even one fully Rio-centric episode to show the cause of his family dynamic would have changed everything for me. Why didn’t they fill in any gaps between Nick’s “now we can do anything we want” comment and Beth finding Rio waiting for her in his kitchen? How long was he in FCI Milan? What was that like? How did come up so fast after that? What did Rosa have to say about it all? That’s what I needed to see. His transition and his backstory but in true GG writer fashion, they forgot all about it.
Season 3 – At least we got the car wash scene and the “show me”. I wasn’t nearly as bothered by Lucy’s death as most people because it just made sense to me. After s2 ended, someone in her circle had to die and we all knew Rio was never going to kill Beth. But I can understand why people hated seeing Lucy die. It needed to be done IMO and she just didn’t add enough value for me to feel the need to keep her around so she was that person. My problem was mostly the hitman storyline and s3 starting with Beth befriending Rhea like that. Whaaaat the fuck. Not only was it weird, it aided in softening her character at a time they should have been trying to build up more momentum since the damage was already done. But back to the hitman storyline…it was just…lazy and all-consuming. Not only that, but it went on and on and nothing even ended up happening?! At a certain point, I almost just wanted him to shoot Rio and get it over with (stick with me here). I love Andrew McCarthy so if the storyline could have been 1-2 episodes before Beth realized she was crazy and that’s not what she ever wanted and she finally took a step back to strategize like the mastermind she was capable of being, I would have liked that.
Anyway, I think I rambled way too long but in all honesty, I’ve barely said anything I wanted to say. Maybe I’ll elaborate more on this later just for my own benefit and then put it out there in case anyone else here might want to read it too. Lol.

Today is the birthday of Courtney Barnett. Among the most very exciting singer-songwriters and especially lyricists to gain fandom in the second half of the 2010s indie rock scene, Barnett’s vibe has the same holy mixture of straightforwardness and eclectic brio as a 60s Dylan—just modify the master’s sharp post-Beat masculine trickstering and substitute in humane, good natured conversation with none of the creativity or visionary element lost. I first heard Courtney through the NPR Tiny Desk Concert where she performs “Avant Gardener” in a stripped down acoustic version which I still greatly prefer to the exceptional studio cut. The line that got me was “The paramedic thinks I’m clever cause I play guitar / I think she’s clever cause she stops people dying.” Her collaborative album with Kurt Vile features one of my most revisited go-to tracks over the past five years, “Over Everything,” an extremely peaceful and extended jammy song that radiates relaxation, collegiality, and healing warmth. My favorite aspect of Barnett’s growing discography is the sense that she wants to expand beyond the well-exhausted tradition of music as self-expression and strives to tap into the sometimes seemingly lost art of music as friend. Serious insight, brilliant craft, good fun.

What the Sea Wants, the Sea Will Have
It thunders in the night, lapping at the docks, making the wood of the ships atop its surface wheeze and creak. But no, that’s imagined, she thinks. She couldn’t hear the ships from here, couldn’t know the men aboard them, but in her minds eye perhaps she sees them. Not huddled in cabins or in flimsy beds among the steerage. They’ll be in town tonight, re-firming their feet on dry land before they slip their sea legs back on in the morrow.
-
Hey, look, it's a brio pirate au!
To Face Unafraid
“The plan isn’t changing,” she promises, raising her voice a little to be heard over the roaring opening chords of Last Christmas. “We’re still hosting everyone, and the kids are staying with us, it’s just - - something’s just come up which is - - I mean. It’s really not anything you need to worry about. I’ll tell you when I get home.”
-
Beth and Rio host their first Christmas together, only for an unexpected guest to stir up old, unresolved tensions.
Part 5 of The Center and Circumference
Navigate a Broken Path
Look, all Mick’s getting at is that - - y’know. It’s not personal for him. He doesn’t count them, keep them, box them up or display them. Mick’s a professional, and killing people – it’s a part of this line of work. He knew it from the moment Pistol brought him on-side, and he knew it when he watched Rio kill Pistol and take over, and he knew it when he helped Rio take care of the body, and he knew it when Rio looked up at him after, his jaw bruised and his eyes too hard on his too young face and said you know what this makes us?
Yeah.
Mick knew what it made them.
-
Set after 3.08, Rio sends Mick to take out Mary Pat. Then things get complicated.
Playing House
“Well, you did get me this bed too,” Beth says, a little blissfully, letting her eyes slip shut as she falls down into her pillows, making Rio snort, and she feels more than sees the mattress dip beneath his weight, the heat radiating off his body as he crawls up over her. She blinks her eyes back open, looking up at him, and her heart almost stops at the way he’s looking down at her, his face soft and open, his eyes dark, and she exhales, her hand coming up to trace the newly shaved line of his beard.

High school and beyond!
Part 4 of The Center and Circumference
Need a Little Time
“That’s the thing with havin’ kids,” she’d hummed, smoothing her touch at his clean-shaven cheek. “You wait too long to see them, they’ve done a whole lot of growin’ without you. Not always the good type either.”
And he’d rolled his eyes then, because he was young enough to think that shit was about him, a jab about not swinging round enough, not going to church with her for anything but the holidays, about the fact that Rhea was nursing Marcus out on the back steps without a ring on her finger, or about the cut on his chin nobody had been able to stop eyeballing since he’d gotten out of his car.
But the thing is, he looks at Marcus now and he thinks:
An inch, maybe two.
That’s how much taller he is.
-
A missing scene from 3.02. Rio reconnects with his son and his ex, but Beth is never far from mind.
Blue Moon
“Oh, you’re planning a beach wedding now?” Ruby asks with a grin, the thing only faltering when the doors open again but - - no. Just a nurse, brandishing her clipboard. Still no Dean. Typical.
Beth hums, like she hadn’t even noticed, looking back at Ruby, her blue eyes bright, and there’s something that feels like Beth in it again, something warm, impish, as she wrinkles her nose, considering, and Ruby can’t help it, the way it feels like a key that unlocks her.
- 10 times Ruby dances fic.
Cross Your Fingers
Because the storage unit was empty again, and none of them had been able to make ends meet – not for Sara’s meds or Sadie’s hormone therapy, and not to salvage the husk of Boland Motors nor stop Beth and Dean from slipping further into debt, and so maybe Beth had thought about the fake cash, then maybe she’d done enough research into making it, then maybe - - maybe she’d done it, taking it out of her oven the first time she’d pulled it off with a wide and honest grin.
Because right then it had felt good. To have done it. To remember it. To remember she was good at this, that what he’d seen in her had been right and true, even if he was only ever playing with her, even if the rest of it had all been a lie.

A post-season two finale monster baby
Two Shoes
“You’re the one who wanted the second set of eyes for this,” she tells him curtly, louder, and Rio’s languid look quickly morphs into a disbelieving glare. He rocks his jaw, grip tightening on her hip.
“You wanna keep it quiet?”
“You wanna ever talk to me about a job before I’m apparently halfway through it?”
-
Beth and Rio do a job - - badly.
A post-s3 mess.
Congratulations @pynkhues!

1, 2, 4 and 15 for your crash s/i? i am very curious :3
1. What are the basics of your self insert? name, date of birth, height, etc.?
- Opal!
- Her age falls somewhere in the mid-late 20s!
- Of average intelligence!
- She's a fairly short individual!
- Birthdate October 24th!
- Weak limbed but strong hearted!
2. When in canon does your self insert come in? Do you have a scene in mind for your entrance?
Ooooo, this one is a bit tough to answer! I never quite had a linear idea of when my S/I comes in. If we want to get technical, it could be sometime between the 2nd and 3rd game? Although admittedly the vision I've always had doesn't quite fall into what we're shown in canon- it's a scenario where all four members of the N Team are (begrudgingly) working together, and a handful of the villainous mutants haven't moved on to live their own lives yet. Cortex’s castle is beyond full, lol. I can for sure confirm Opal is present for the events of the 3rd and 4th games.
Her first technical “scene” is her being interviewed by N. Brio! She applied for a job under Cortex because she has a background working with animals and has experience in the medical field, plus also she wanted to get away from the world. What she DIDN’T know was that she’d soon be working for an evil organization. Oops.
4. Would you be considered a main character, side character, villain, or something else?
A side/supporting character for sure during canon events! Though she becomes a main character in the OT3 Timeline after the events of the current games. She has to be, or who else would reign in her entropath spouses?!?
15. How does your self insert play a role in the plot of the story? do they help directly defeat the villain, support the heroes, etc.?
Opal just hangs around and laughs at the doctors every time they fail. JK SHE DOES MORE THAN THAT-
It’s no secret her heart will always be in the right place, and she will vocally root for the heros. She’s always very friendly to Crash and Coco, going so far as to ensure they were safe in a different dimension before her spouses took over the universe. It drives the Tropys nuts LMAO.

Monday Morning Rewatch Thoughts
This episode was disappointing. I think the last episode would have served as a better mid-season finale personally. Thoughts below:
Annie
- The plot of, “I wasn’t Ben,” and Annie being motivated to keep Ben in his current school for that reason is amazing. That is the kind of plot I want, and care about, for Annie. I love that they have included Ben’s transition into the story line in a way that it isn’t the main focus and that Ben has other pieces of characterization and other challenges/points of conflict than just his transition, but that they haven’t shied away from it when it makes sense.
- The financial aid lady is a down.ass.bitch. for telling Annie to just go find some guy she’s slept with the put down on the paperwork. I’m sorry, but that was great of her to be like listen here’s a loophole so you can help your kid and I will not ask questions.
- I did not like the Kevin (name?) storyline at first because it just didn’t make sense? And I did not like his characterization at the auction of being the “trashy homeless guy” who eats way too much food and steals dogs. I felt like he had more to him when he told Annie that he doesn’t want to be a favor to her. I think she has more chemistry with him than any other guy we have seen her with (including Greg, sue me) and I’m actually looking forward to a possible storyline of her and him falling in love via being awkward roommates. I am hoping it has a current of don’t judge a book by it’s cover, and that Kevin is someone who is a good person and has an interesting story that brings Annie to some sort of realization about herself.
Ruby/Stan
- I HATED... yes... HATED Beth in the scene where Stan was going over the game plan. She was so damn condescending. Stan was biting his tongue and being as polite as he could be, but she was fucking rude. Point blank. Rude.
- Because of that, I loved the scene where he called Beth out. And he is fucking right. And you know what? He even threw her a bone that she was ignored in her home for so many years. Which is fucking true, and made the conversation SO much more nuanced than just Stan calling her out. It made it sooo much more complex that he mentions her motivations. He has known this woman like a family member to his own family for decades. It makes sense he would see and understand the nuances of why she is doing what she’s doing. I hope it is foreshadowing for something more to come.
- Sarah and Ruby have the best chemistry of any parent/child relationship in my opinion. I love watching them on screen even for just a few moments.
- Ruby’s, “I did it for me,” at the end was remniscient of Beth telling Dean, “I wanted to,”. Yes, thank you. Ruby is not a yes man. She did this shit for her family, for her kids, for herself. As much as I think Beth might try to be in charge and often is, it was a good reminder that Ruby is still in there and still has a backbone. She has called Beth out with stealing the Tesla, with the sex tape, etc. before and I want that energy back.
- Annie and Ruby having a sweet moment together on the bench was great, I love them together. They’re so fun but also so so sweet.
Beth/Dean
- She’s with fricken Dean again this week.
- Beth’s eyebrows and wig are fucking terrible. Someone CHILL with the eyebrow filler.
- Was Rio just watching Dean and Beth? Like hanging out waiting? He was like RIGHT THERE when Dean got up. Was he behind a tree watching Dean with his arm around Beth just boiling?
- Dean being pitied by the guy he was trying to sell product to was great. He has been knocked down so many pegs. But also, it was a waste of fucking screen time.
- Not so easy to get out from under someone’s thumb, huh Deansie? How’s it feel to be a dumb ass yet again? A year’s supply of skin care? Guessing Beth is gonna have to bail him out which is again a waste of screen time and something no one gives a shit about seeing.
-  The fact that Dean thinks he was good at selling cars is just... sad.
- Beth being a “bad bitch” and selling purses to the husbands who went to see strippers is completely undermined by her being a doormat for Dean who is a sexist, condescending pig who cheated, lied about cancer, and has not shown a single ounce of respect for her as a woman outside of her ability to raise children and make cookies.
- I do not want to see a storyline of Beth trying to get money to leave and go to Nevada or wherever. I know the show runners have said Beth will realize she can’t escape Rio if they’re in the same town, so that is what this storyline is going to be. Her trying to escape Rio yet again. This has been drawn out long enough now. This episode was so confusing and weird. Like her and Rio got the trust of the SS just so the agents could leave? Their relationship advancement, her making this choice of him or SS, etc. was for... what? The drama of the last episode was because of... what exactly? What was the entire point of the SS storyline if it literally put us no where? I’m asking sincerely if anyone has thoughts.
- I don’t want to see Beth and Dean anymore. I am fucking exhausted of seeing Beth and Dean. I am over it. I spent almost this entire episode on my phone because I was bored. The Beth being sweet to Dean storyline is so so so far past where it made any logical sense to the plot. There has been no advancement or progress. She’s supposed to be in a love triangle? We have seven episodes left and there has been absolutely zero progress in her and Dean’s situation. I will be looking for some fucking conflict in this next episode with Dean seeing Rio otherwise I have little to no hope for the Brio ship going forward.
Rio/Nick
-  Rio is the spider that Dave talked about right? That he couldn’t get and so he never went back in the bed?
- Nick is a pathetic pussy, and so is his bodyguard. Mick is the only ‘muscle’ I want on my screen. Thanks.
- The bullet wounds not being there is unacceptable. Not just because it completely minimizes the fact that this man was shot in the chest three times and left to die, but also just from a plot standpoint. Like this was the entire storyline of season 3. Wtf. I understand Dean’s not being there, because that was treated as a minimal storyline. But Beth shooting Rio was the entire basis of season 3′s conflict. It’s bizarre and completely unacceptable.
- I posted a little while back about stereotypes, guessing that Nick was going to push Rio and Beth together by stereotyping them both and not seeing the deeper connection between them. Tooting my own horn because this is exactly what Nick did. Beth is the soccer mom, Rio the “gangster”.
- Nick and Dean are the same force for Rio and Beth, respectively. They’re both oppressors. They both don’t get it, the draw between the two. Beth and Rio both try to minimize their relationship, admitting only to sex and nothing more, to their oppressors. Beth used to want to get out from Dean’s grasp and Rio currently does with Nick. Both Dean and Nick have put this other person in a box, minimized them to nothing more than a stereotype, taken away their choices, taken away their power and control. How Beth does not realize Dean is her oppressor and not Rio is fucking beyond me.
- Nick doesn't have kids, so who was the kid referring to Rio as his uncle? The female cousin’s child? Let’s see more of her and less of Dean please.
- Rio literally couldn’t cope the second Nick brought up Beth. He walked away like a love-struck teenage idiot not wanting to admit that he made a bad decision over a girl. I’m curious about this. I hope we find out more of why Rio did it. Did he do it just to scare Beth into submission because he knew he couldn’t hurt her? Or was there a layer of thinking Lucy was a threat to Beth? Because Lucy was pissed at Beth. Or a layer of trying to feign still having power in front of his boys but not being able to hurt Beth?
- Rio’s voice is so raspy at the end, he’s so tired and beaten down, literally and figuratively. And I cannot catch the meaning behind “sometimes it’s worth it”, to be yourself? He sounded so... just sad and down when he said it. It sounded so vulnerable.
- It is not, I repeat, not a storyline they should go down of thinking it is cool/fun/sexy/empowering/feminist for this “gangbanger” to be in love with the housewife and for her to not reciprocate and then torment him. It’s not.
Promo/Going Forward:
- I think we have seen confirmation that Rio will lie/keep things from Nick. I think Rio gave Beth the plates, and they will be working together going forward. I hope.
- Rio chilling in the backroom of PP with Beth, so chill, so nonchalant, put me in the ground.
- In the below shot, you can see Rio still sitting there with his hand on his chin as Beth talks to Dean. This scene better be LOADED. Go ahead and mention them banging, Dean. That will be fun. But also I want to see Beth try to talk her way out of it. Go ahead and try to tell Dean you didn’t have a choice Elizabeth. Go ahead and try to minimize what this is when Rio is sitting there listening. That will be golden conflict. I want to see Rio realize the dynamic between Beth and Dean, see him see how submissive and pathetic she is when Dean is around, see how Dean belittles her, and then use that against her to pull her out of her shell. I want to see Beth try to minimize her relationship with Rio, see him call her out on that too. Idk. This scene has been four seasons coming so it better not be a disappointment.

Beth’s transition from “that doesn’t seem fair” to going for Rio’s belt felt weird to me. I mean I understand wanting to improvise a distraction but it seemed a little strange. what did you think??
It definitely wasn’t exactly the smoothest of transitions!  And personally the whole thing took me by surprise!
So I guess I should preface this answer with that I think there are a lot of ways we can interpret this scene in general and what really informs each interpretation is why you think Beth left the barbeque in the first place.
For me I look at Beth’s actions as being on some level based around feeling overwhelmed by Rio’s touch and the memories that are attached to it - both good and bad.  A reminder of both their more intimate moments (like 2x04 and 2x09) and their other intimate moments (like the 4x03 pool scene or the 4x05 wire search).  I talked about it a tiny bit here too - but I think it’s a really interesting choice that the show decided to mirror 3x03 in having all the sound fade away until there is just what is essentially a high pitched noise (like what would happen after a gunshot).  It feels purposeful and, to me, a seeming callback to the 2x13 shooting.
So all of that happens and Beth is overwhelmed/panicked and she ultimately leaves to take off the wire.
Fast-forward to the bedroom and the conversation where Rio basically tells Beth that if she’s going to be sticking around she needs to impress his family which then leads to Beth reaching for his belt.  Again I think there’s a couple things happening here.
It’s in a lot of ways a (now real) continuation of the subconscious thoughts Beth was having earlier in the episode - where she’s torn between Rio (and crime) and her new “free” life the Secret Service are offering.
But beyond that I see the entire exchange boiling down to three things:
a distraction - Rio was picking up things on the bookcase and Beth hadn’t exactly hidden the wire that well.  as simple as that.
a form of encouragement - Beth still hasn’t gotten anything on Rio’s boss at this point.  So I almost view her reaching for his belt as a way of enticing him and leaning into their attraction (because at the end of the day they have been and always will be very into each other on a sexual level) to ultimately encourage him (wink wink) to influence his family’s opinion of her.  Because at the end of the day - whether she stays in crime or leaves is contingent on these people and whether or not they like her.
horniness - look, I think this one is simple lol.  Like I said above the problem with Brio has never been that they aren’t attracted to each other.  They clearly are.  The show has also pretty well established that Beth is into Rio’s domesticity and that she’s also into pulling one over on him - like her correcting him that they’re actually partners.  So I mean - Rio was giving her those eyes, challenging her almost, and I think Beth was just that into Rio (especially after the touching outside) to act on it.
Was this scene executed that amazingly or even earned?  That’s debatable, honestly - and why it probably did feel strange watching.  It’s a massive shift in the current Brio dynamic that seemingly came out of nowhere.  But it is effective in perhaps showing that on some level Beth maybe isn’t as committed to her new life in Henderson as she was in the past.

What’s your analysis on the song choice Over and Over during the scene with Beth and Rio and “Carolyn” at the bank in 4x07?
The way season 4 fed us, amirite, Anon? They just threw it all to the wind. Decided to forego all subtlety and give us blatant, overt proclamations we’d been dying to see. I genuinely believe Over and Over was exactly what we all wanted it to be – Rio coming to realize that he’s choosing Beth.
What’s interesting to me is what a LEAP it was for him from the painful, resentful strip search he did of her in 4.05, to the gentleness of his approach to her in 4.06 and 4.07. I am BEYOND curious what happened between him and Nick in the time it took Rio to finally introduce them. Everything after he killed Fitz was Rio trying to subtly show Beth that he was putting his trust in her. He knew there was a hit on him. Did he suspect her? He seemed to. He knew she was talking to the Secret Service. (“I’m worth it.”) Did he suspect they made her new plates? She wouldn’t tell him who they were from. She was acting all twitchy. His car was tracked. He certainly suspected she was up to something. How interesting that he went against his typical response and instead of pushing back or punishing her he gave her grace and trust. Made her The Banker. What happened that made him try harder to gain her allegiance?
Before there was Over and Over, there was Whole Life. There was Rio being so loud that Beth was someone who mattered. There was his protectiveness, his quiet approach to show her his humanity. His selfless giving-in to show her a side of him she hadn’t seen for a long time. A side he tried to get her to believe didn’t even exist. That she had imagined it. That she was nothing to him and he didn’t care. That she was just work. And suddenly she wasn’t just work. She was someone he felt was “a friend,” someone “good enough.” For him. Someone he wanted to be near. Someone he wanted to choose him. His behavior was confusing because it was yet another Rio gesture. Him telling her without telling her. Him showing her who he is and her misreading everything.
Over and Over is such an old song. It’s so evocative of that old-fashioned sort of courtship in its sound and the romanticism of the lyrics. How unfitting this type of sound is for a couple like Brio. They are anything but a conventional courtship. And yet, it’s still a courtship. Displays of affection, displays of caring. An offering of vulnerability. A quiet giving of oneself. Giving her grace. Choosing to forgive her. And imploring her to choose him back. “I just thought things were different now, that’s all.” He thought he’d shown her. How much clearer could he have been? He showed her his childhood home, his most intimate memories. Showed her his vulnerability. Showed her she wasn’t just work. There isn’t much to the lyrics. Just the cyclical loop they’re stuck in. And he wouldn’t have it any other way.
What does everyone else think? Rio is so hot and cold throughout season 4. How is everyone else reading him?

Hi thiss is cheating buuut.😬 S1 or S2 . bathroom break or the brio bookshelf moment . bathroom break or brio kiss. Also! 2x07 or 2x04
Hi! I love cheating, anon, hahaha, and oh my gosh, these are really good ones. Okay!
Season 1 or Season 2
Season 2! I have a very big softspot for s1, because it's what got me into the show in the first place, but I do think it's a much simpler series than what it evolves into, and that it often falls back onto stereotypes (Amber, Rio and Nancy spring to mind) in ways that are shallow, and I love that they flesh those stereotypes out into real, complex and contradictory characters as the show goes on.
I will pay that I think s1 is a tighter show in terms of the writing, but I love that s2, 3 and 4 take greater narrative and character risks, that they get messier, but also go deeper, and I don't know. I always prefer a show that tries and stumbles than a show that doesn't try at all.
Season 2 is not as tidy as season 1, and obviously the ending was a bit of a mess, but I loved that it was adventurous with all the storylines, and that it really commit to exploring not only what these characters were capable of, but what they were willing and ready to do for each other.
Bathroom Break or the Bookshelf (Finger)Bang
As much as I love the bookshelf scene in 4.06, nothing beats the bathroom break for me. I watch a lot of TV, and I honestly think it's one of the best sex scenes I've ever seen in the medium, from the performance and chemistry to the way it's shot and intercut with the aftermath, to the writing, direction, music, just - - yeah. I think it's pretty perfect.
Bathroom Break or Brio Kiss
See above, haha.
2.07 or 2.04
Oh my gosh, ANON!!! This one hurts. Since you cheated, can I cheat too and say both? Hahaha. LOOK, I love them both for really different reasons, and I think they're probably my two favourite episodes not just of s2, but of the series overall, and I love that they work as this sort of two-hander? Because 2.04 is about acting on the attraction, but I'd argue that 2.07, moreso than 2.09, is about acting on the connection beyond the attraction.
2.04 lets the meaning of the physicality and the lust and the passion sprawl, whereas 2.07 lasers in on this thing underneath that – from Beth's unbridled fury at Dean even implying Rio took Jane (wildly rare for Beth! She's exhausted, not empassioned in her fights with Dean), to Beth and Rio's fight, to Rio bringing Beth the dubby at the end – these are not just beats of intimacy, but of an emotional honesty neither of them can really face.
As two episodes, they work so well together, I think, as they show these different facets of who they are to each other, and what exists between them, and I just really love that.
-
Give me two characters (or things, I guess, haha) in my inbox:
“vs.” for who I think would win a fight
“or” for who I like better
“+” for how I ship them (platonic, familial, romantic, not at all)
And I’ll give you my reasons for why!

Rio from the first season and the Rio we saw at the end of the show are two completely different characters. I believe the writers attempted to make Rio less likable as the season progressed, and I believe the writers mocked his character at points. Do you think this was done on purpose? I just got a vibe from the creators that they never liked how popular Rio was, but maybe I'm reading too much into things. What are your thoughts?
Rio from the first season and the Rio we saw at the end of the show are two completely different characters.
I agree. And not in a well-written character development way.
I don't think that the GGPTB wanted to make Rio less likable exactly, but they definitely used some unsubtle writing to try to control the audience's response to Rio. The problem was they never understood the things that made Rio compelling. They clearly (this is beyond obvious from the writing and the interviews only confirm this) thought people only liked Rio because "he is hot" (sound familiar?) and his sexy chemistry with Beth. This misunderstanding of the audience is not unique to Rio, by the way. They wrote Dean as a serial cheater. They wrote the cancer lie. And then they didn't understand why the audience wouldn't forgive Dean. They misattributed the Dean dislike to the audience being horny for Rio/Beth and took zero accountability (sound familiar?) for the things they wrote. Ultimately, the show had weak writing. It affected all characters and all plots.
Stans like to act like big bad NBC ruined Jenna's vision or some other bullshit. Jenna Bans could have made a movie or a cable channel show. She chose to work with* a giant media conglomerate on an episodic network show. Yes, NBCU exploited the hell out of scant Brio & Rio content for their promotion. But they didn't doctor scenes that did not exist. Everything was from the show as written by Jenna & Co. And Bans & Krebs also "used" Brio & Rio in every interview or comment when they said good things were coming or when replying "keep watching" in response to questions about Brio & Rio.
I also do not think they disliked Rio's popularity. Stans can say whatever they want, but Rio got them S2. NBCU cares about money. They don't care why something is clicking with an audience. They just care about metrics. And the metrics for Rio (and S2 Brio) were always the only exceptional ones for the show. This isn't fantastical thinking (like the big 1 billion minutes lie). It is what happened. So, Rio's popularity kept them employed. They didn't dislike that.
Ultimately, like a lot of creatives that reach a certain level, Jenna & Co. thought they were more clever than the product that they produced revealed them to be.
Ok, I strayed a little bit, but I hope I answered your questions. If not, feel free to send a follow-up.
*And continues to work with them, as does Bill Krebs. Which neither would have done if they thought NBCU mistreated them and their creative, artistic work. Like, get a clue all you fools who pretend to understand television production.

Good Girls Finale Tag Game
Tagged by @pynkhues to share three things I wish would happen in the finale and three things I’d hate to happen.
Wishlist:
1. Any Brio scene that I can feast upon on the empty weeks ahead. I don’t even care if they don’t sleep together, but I really loved the tone that 4.14 ended on where Rio was drawn to her because of her ability to get things done on her terms. It felt so much like S1 when you could tell he was impressed by her even if he didn’t want to be.
2. That the girls end up happy! I know they flip back and forth so quickly between them flying and high and then things blowing up in their face, but I just want the end to be them being happy.
3. More Mick! He says so little, but his scenes are always some of my favorite.
Hard Pass:
1. Vance. I don’t like anything about him and I want him to stop living vicariously through Dean trying to take Beth down.
2. Dean taking the kids and hot-footing it to Nevada. As much as this show is about how Beth finds her autonomy beyond her roles as wife and mother, I don’t think I’d like to see her kids taken from her - again.
3. The season closing out on Beth and Rio being on bad terms. I know they’re back and forth so frequently, but I want them to end the season on them experiencing one of the higher notes of their relationship, even if it’s them standing on equal footing and respecting one another.
This is cheating but
4. Please no cliffhanger. I don’t think I could stand if they left things too open ended.
I don’t know who to tag, so anyone who wants to play can!

The blood spurts out of her mouth and down her chin, she tries to cough, to catch her breath but that just makes it worse. She can hear someone yelling at her, over her, touching her. She tries to focus on it but they sound underwater, her sight all hazy, numbness spreading throughout her body.

His Elizabeth Boland
27 Nov 2020, T, 927, 1/1, 30 kudos
Part 1 of His Elizabeth Boland series
Based on season 3,ep 3 (egg roll) Rio comes back from 'the dead' and confronts beth at the bar with intention to off her. This scene plays out from rio's POV. And I gotta tell you, he's not a happy camper. He's here to cap a bitch!
Remembrance
28 Nov 2020, M, 2.1K, 1/1, 40 kudos
Part 2 of His Elizabeth Boland series
So when Beth Boland told Rio that she was pregnant, what did he do? I mean, did he just go home all comfy and what-not? Where's that scene? Also, what happened in Beth's bedroom with Rio; when he "hit it while her husband was at work." 😀 (God! That man is petty! Love to see it.) Like Ruby, I just wanted to know: how was it? was it good? Missing scenes and flashbacks from Rio's POV.
Him, Her, Them.
01 Dec 2020, M, 5.1K, 3/3, 42 kudos
Part 3 of His Elizabeth Boland series
Dear Reader, these 2 have feelings. But they're idiots. Idiots in love. Okay, so beth told Rio that she was pregnant. Season 3, ep 3 and then she came home from grocery shopping and he was waiting to take her on a little ride. (the way he says, "hey, now" gives me shivers. Damn!) So they took a little ride. How did that go. I think it was fraught with all kinds of tension. Emotional tension, sexual tension; knife. Amiright? They would probably like to keep those thoughts/feelings to themselves. Can't have that now! And plus the golden gun may or may not be in play. 😋😋 Oh and eyefucking. *blush. Soooooo much of it. And we all know how well they do do that. I'm living vicariously through them and fully intend on going down with this ship.
Tumblr media
lopezuuus ( @riveramour ) starting posting in November. They write angsty headcanons and reminiscences, sometimes with sad endings and a fic about Beth and Rio embracing his dark side during sex.

Rio reminisces about his and Beth's firsts.
Natural Habitat
Updated 14 Dec 2020, E, 28K, 7/?, 329 kudos

A collection of headcanons and prompts about Beth and Rio, because I can't get enough of them. Prompts are 99% of time unrelated to each other.
murder on my mind
30 Nov 2020, E, 2.6K, 1/1, 88 kudos
Beth gets off on Rio murdering people.
Tumblr media

write vague, canon-compliant, angsty wip 2 that’s basically just a title and a vibe but has me excited nonetheless
write a book
continue writing self-indulgent, unrealistic, married!brio pwp
