I’m just…shocked. i watched that video and kept waiting for the punchline, kept waiting for them to eventually go “haha, just kidding!! now here’s the REAL announcement.” but no. they kept going and my heart kept sinking. what the fuck?? genuinely?? not only are they putting all new content behind a paywall but it seems like they’re also taking down all their old content and putting it there too?? what about fans who can’t afford this? are they sure their channel is even big enough to sustain this business move?? are they making enough content to justify $60 annual subscriptions?? this just seems dumb and unfair, yikes :/

I get being upset about content being put behind a paywall, it definitely sucks especially when a lot of people simply can't afford it. That being said I also understand why they are doing it, YouTube puts a limit on them and what they can post. They also need to be able to make money as a company so they can continue to make things. With that though I do really hope they find a way to still share content that people don't have to pay for

i can’t help but think that this decision was following dropout tv’s example (both companies being creator-owned online comedy show producers with lots of similarities between them) but what they didn’t realize is that dropout has been around for literal decades and has a huge backlog of old shows as well as tons of current ones coming out on dropout.tv while STILL POSTING FREE STUFF ON YOUTUBE. meanwhile watcher has like. 3 shows that come out consistently with months of break in between them. they are a vastly smaller and newer company and there’s no way they’ll make enough money from their current fanbase (which is predominantly younger than dropouts with less expendable income anyway). idk what the hell they were thinking with this. anyway just remember piracy is free and also always morally correct

as a loyal viewer of everything Ryan and Shane have done since the early buzzfeed unsolved days, seeing Watcher move to a subscription service is really sad - most people nowadays (me included) can’t afford basic necessities most months so an extra $5 on top of all the other streaming platforms just isn’t feasible at all.
I wish the Watcher team all the best and I’ll miss their content dearly, but I hope they’re prepared to lose most of their usual viewers.

"we hereby conduct this postmortem investigation" is a funny way for miss swift to announce her collaboration with the ghoul boys

The horrible horrible irony of finding solace in buzzfeed because I know they would never delete the unsolved videos from YouTube

ghost files is just so compelling because sure it’s about ghosts. sure it’s about trying to find proofs and evidence and explore what’s there. sure it’s about theories and banter. but in the midst of all this there’s another story about standing in the middle of a dark room paralyzed with fear until a friendly face cracks a joke for you. until someone says sure I’ll scream at dust and argue this is all bullshit while you find your courage. I’ll make a silly fool of myself, take goofy selfies of us in haunted mirrors and I’ll hold your hand for something I don’t even believe in. I’ll mock the wind and taunt demons so it’s less scary. I’ll sit there in the dark with you just to make you laugh.

"I hope you guys will follow us this one last time" Ryan if you said "let's all go into this deep dark pit that probably has death at the bottom" I'd ask for a time to be there. I've been invested for years, I'll follow y'all to hell.
