Not that long ago I threw out the idea of creating a Journey to the West reading group, and was delighted to see a fair number of people interested in the prospect! So in the effort to see this come to fruition while still taking into account everyone's different schedules, time zones, and busy lives, here's my general proposal for how this will work:

The version of Xiyouji that this reading group will start with will be the Anthony C. Yu English translation, firstly because while long it is the most complete and accurate translation out there, and secondly because thanks to @journeytothewestresearch it is completely free to download and read as pdfs! I'll create a separate blog specifically for this reading group, which will act as something of a hub/archive for people's analysis, art, reactions, memes, criticisms, additions of context, etc. as we make our way through the journey. The schedule that I'm thinking of would be to do one chapter per week, which would be more or less 20 pages per week. This group would "meet" every Sunday, which would be the day participants are encouraged to finish that week's chapter and/or submit their creative/analytical pieces about it. Sunday would also be the day where I'd give a quick recap on that week's chapter, and would mass reblog anything participants submitted to have that work in the archive. This is what I imagine for starters, but if it works out well we could try organizing larger events or even chat rooms.

Thank you to everyone who expressed interest in a JTTW themed reading group! Of course people should feel free to offer any advice, concerns, criticisms, or questions, but if this sounds like a solid plan for a tumblr based book club then I'll get to work on the reading group blog and a pinned post that will detail where people can access the Yu pdfs along with a good summary of the entire journey, and provide something of a tentative reading schedule. So here's hoping this sounds like a good set up, and here's looking forward to getting this journey started!

OKAY OKAY HEAR ME OUT HERE

1. tang is a fan of. all mythology. and i mean all of it. i myself am not much of a movie person and tang will probably get that indifference as well but he's definitely seen httyd (at least 1&2 i haven't seen the third unfortunately). so tang would LOVE this song. has probably sang it for/with pigsy before for fun cuz its one of his favorites.

2. VERY FIRST EPISODE OF LMK PIGSY KNOWS SANDY HAS A BOAT AT THE VERY LEAST AND OFFERS TO GO ASK HIM SO THEY CAN GET TO FFM. even if he's never been on the boat prior to then he definitely knows where to get one

3. he's fought alongside sandy iirc so he KNOWS his way around a fight

4. we know from the episode Benched that pigsy has the voice of an angel (thank you sandy) meaning he's more than capable of singing it

they could already be married OR. this could be how he proposes to tang as well as how the gang first hears tang sing. and when the song's over and tang opens his eyes while giggling he sees the ring as pigsy finally pops the question... 🥺🥺

So I’ve been going through the tags (and followed immediately after cuz ur really cool and I love ur art and fics <3) and I’m obsessed with burnt marshmallow!monkey and the whole ‘the glamor acts like an second layer of skin to this very touch starved man’ and now I’m curious how the others would react if it ever accidentally slipped off. I actually have a bit of something in the works regarding the Burnt Marshmallow. It's a slow moving work in progress but *evil cackling* UR RIGHT ABOUT ANGST INBOUND MWAHAHAHAHAHHAHA

Funny thing is tho, the initial reveal of what he actually looks like isn't something I have planned out yet, I more have aftermath moments and stuff like that planned and half-written and the recovery from complete alienation from touch for hundreds of years bKAMOKLJSADF

Anyway though, sure is gonna be fun. Imagine seeing something that was your mentor/father figure one second and then suddenly it's this demonic pile of burnt fur with red eyes and sharp teeth. Once Wukong realizes his glamour's down, all of his attention focuses on Mk and the way he flinches back when he looks at him. Involentarily because he looks so different, he doesn't know if it's actually him. Heck, Mk's had people (looks at macaque) pretend to be Wukong before, so this could just have been another person trying to impersonate his mentor-- But to Wukong that's fear of him. Of what he looks like. Not fear of... y'know, him being a completely different person. He's so paranoid about his own appearance he misunderstands the way Mk steps back. Mei draws her sword, he doesn't even really register it, because all he can see is Mk being afraid of him. And it's gonna take them a hot second to figure out what's happening because he certainly isn't going to be up to communicating when his worst fear is his reality.

So like, that'll be fun.
