I wanted to start doing a series on diseases and afflictions affecting pet snakes, and where else to start but with probably the single most-feared disease in the snake-keeping community?

Inclusion Body Disease (IBD) is an infamous lethal disease that can affect snakes in the boa and python families. It's known both for its degenerative presentation with neurological symptoms and for the speed with which it can wipe out entire collections of snakes. The name of this disease is enough to make snake keepers' heartrates pick up. I have had nightmares about IBD. It's not something to mess around with. But what exactly is it?

What is IBD?

IBD is a disease typically associated with boas (the older name for the disease was Boid Inclusion Body Disease or BIBD), though it is also infectious to pythons (source) and possibly colubrids.

Symptoms of IBD include a history of poor eating habits and slow growth (the snake may be described as a "poor doer"), bad sheds even with proper husbandry, poor wound healing, weight loss, and regurgitation. Progression of the disease often results in neurological symptoms ranging from facial tics to a complete loss of balance and spatial awareness and seizures. (Source)

Boas infected with IBD may live for months or even years with no symptoms beyond a failure to thrive. Because of this, and because of the vague presentation of symptoms in the early stages, IBD should be suspected in every single sick boa.

In pythons, the disease is more rapidly lethal, and most pythons present with severe neurological symptoms. Pythons infected with IBD rarely last a week.

How is IBD spread?

IBD primarily spreads through contact with infected bodily fluids. This can occur by swapping water bowls and enclosures, using the same equipment (such as holding tubs) between snakes, mating, and possibly through snake mite infestations.

How common is IBD?

It's hard to say, because the presentation is often vague in boas and many keepers don't test their snakes. It's safe to assume it's widespread and act accordingly. There's no need to be afraid, but there is a need to take common-sense precautions.

How can I keep my snakes safe from IBD?

Best practice is to always, always quarantine new arrivals. Keep the snake in a separate room, in a simple enclosure, and closely monitor the snake's health. Snakes in quarantine should have a completely different set of supplies from the main snake collection (no shared feeding tongs, bowls, holding tubs, nothing).

Best practice for any new boa is to test the snake for IBD as soon as you bring it home, keep it in quarantine for AT LEAST 90 days, and test again before graduating the snake from quarantine. Ideally, it's best to buy from a breeder who tests their facility, so you can avoid bringing an IBD positive snake home in the first place.

For pythons, a 90 day quarantine alone is usually enough to confirm or deny the presence of IBD. Because IBD presentation is rapid and quickly lethal in pythons, you'll know if the python has IBD well before it's due to graduate from quarantine.

How can I test my snake for IBD?

I personally use an oral swab test from Research Associates Laboratory (here). It's very simple, and you just order the size swabs you need from their site, collect samples and fill out their order form, overnight them to the lab, and you'll usually get the results back within a few days. I swab my snakes myself, but you can also have a vet do it if you don't know how.

What should I do if my snake tests positive for IBD?

IBD-positive snakes should be immediately quarantined from every other snake and kept in quarantine for the rest of their lives. A serious discussion must be had with your reptile vet upon a positive test about the snake's long-term quality of life. IBD cannot be cured, and most keepers opt to humanely euthanize their snake upon a positive test to prevent the snake from suffering further. False positive IBD tests are extremely rare, and prompt re-testing should ensure no mistakes have been made.

If a snake tests positive for IBD, it is advisable to throw away anything the snake came into contact with. Hides, water bowls, the entire enclosure, everything.
