mxtx: literally the first thing i said in the books about the nie bros' relationship is that they are very close and that nie huaisang admires his brother a lot
the fandom: but nie mingjue burned his brother's things!
mxtx: the propelling force of the whole present day narrative of the books is nie huaisang loving his brother so much he wants to burn the world to avenge him
the fandom: but! nie mingjue big scawy guy...

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed, Episode 40 part two
(Masterpost) (Pinboard)  (whole thing on AO3)
Tumblr media
Warning! Spoilers for All 50 Episodes!
What a Relief
After spending a few weeks in Gusu doing...stuff, our trio comes to Jinlintai for the discussion conference. Unusually for a CQL stair-climbing scene, nobody is planning to murder anyone once they get to the top.
Tumblr media
Our crew walks up the stairs past 3 massive sculpted reliefs featuring Jin Guangyao.
Tumblr media
First and most important, I have to point out that the sculpture version of Lan Xichen [edit: Nie Mingjue actually, whoops] is wearing a sash that looks like this:
Tumblr media
*cough*
Meanwhile, for the picture with the sword and flames, qhanzi.com tells me that the written characters are 伏殺, fú shā; Google translate tells me this means "ambush." Specifically Fu=conceal, Sha=kill. Ballsy to have a monumental artwork on your front steps announcing that you're a backstabbing turncoat, Jin Guangyao.
Tumblr media
Speaking of balls, Jiang Cheng jumps at the opportunity to bust some when the Lan bros arrive with Wei Wuxian in tow. He pretends not to know who Wei Wuxian is, but obviously does know something, given how bitchily he asks to be introduced. Lan Wangji continues his 13-year-long silent treatment of JC while Lan Xichen tries to figure out which bland smile he's meant to be deploying in this situation.
(more after the cut!)
They're all rescued by the appearance of Jin Guangyao 3.0, who has discarded his Nie braids and his Wen hotness in favor of Jin ostentatiousness.
Tumblr media
He's no longer wearing the v-neck robe and topknot crown that we associate with the cultivation sects. Instead he's wearing a hat and a round-necked robe with a big embroidered design on the chest, that resembles the clothing style of a court official.
Some people see JGY's bureaucratic wardrobe as signaling that he's an unassuming administrator, someone who is not threatening to the power structure or is not ambitious. I see it more as conveying that his ambition reaches beyond the cultivation sects into the realm of dynastic/imperial politics.
Anyway, Jiang Cheng turns his ire towards his nephew, and Lan Xichen relaxes again. Possibly he is a little too relaxed, judging by how he's ogling Jiang Cheng.
Tumblr media
I'm high as a kite, I just might stop to check you out
Party Monster
Fanfics are often accused of giving us an out-of-character (OOC) Wei Wuxian, but no fanfic Wei Wuxian is as OOC as the Wei Wuxian who attends this banquet. Normally Wei Wuxian is a mildly annoying flirt, but as soon as soon as he arrives in Koi tower he is (presumably) possessed by the spirit of Jin Guangshan, and becomes a gross sex pest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He goes out of his way to hit on the wife of the clan leader and make googly eyes at all of the maids, whose social status doesn't allow them to be rude to him. And he does it in front of his date! What the hell, possessed Wei Wuxian.
Tumblr media
While oblivious to Lan Wangji's jealousy, Wei Wuxian does check in with him to make sure it's ok to put on his "crazy Mo Xuanyu" act. LWJ replies with a certain amount of salt, but once Wei Wuxian makes it clear he's thinking about Lan Wangji's public face, LWJ chills out and answers him normally.
Side note: in no universe would this cute lil maid be making eyes at heavily-masked Mo Xuanyu when unmasked, radiant, filthy-rich Lan Wangji is right there to be smiled at.
Tumblr media
Jin Guangyao greets everyone and some dancers start doing their thing; mercifully, possessed Wei Wuxian refrains from hitting on the dancers. As soon as Jin Guangyao starts to circulate through the room, Nie Huaisang has an epic nervous breakdown all over him, which is even better entertainment than the dancers.
Tumblr media
This gives Wei Wuxian the cover he needs to slip out of the hall unnoticed. Well, as long as nobody notices Lan Wangji's obvious pining.
Fight Club
The prophecy foretells that into each generation of Jins will be born one douchebag cousin. Jin Chan is the douchebag cousin of his generation.
Tumblr media
Jin Chan accuses "Mo Xuanyu" of being a sex pest, and Wei Wuxian suddenly understands why the plot made him act so OOC at the party. Mo Xuanyu wasn't really a sex pest; he was a regular pest, trying to get information out of Qin Su, not trying to seduce her. But he doesn't know that yet. In other adaptations Mo Xuanyu is gay, but CQL exists in a strange censorship-created realm in which gayness is pervasive but never mentioned, and therefore there is no homophobia. So nobody would care if Mo Xuanyu was gay.
When Wei Wuxian realizes what Mo Xuanyu did, he thinks "Mo Xuanyu, do you want to die?"
Tumblr media
Nice choice of idiom, Wei Wuxian. I believe we have firmly established that yes, Mo Xuanyu absolutely did want to die.
The show is kind of vague, verbally, about whether Wei Wuxian 2.0 has a golden core. But there are a lot of moments that strongly suggest he does, at this point, have a functioning core.
Tumblr media
This rock attack is, I hope, one of those moments, or else Jin Chan is a total pussy, getting knocked back by landscape gravel.
Next, Wei Wuxian shows Jin Ling the super-secret move known as "arm twisting," which Jin Ling, as an only child, has never encountered before.
Tumblr media
Anyone with siblings is very familiar with this move.
Because this is The Untamed, this move should be executed with extra spinning whenever possible.
Tumblr media
Jin Ling learns the move right away, and uses it to win the scuffle.
Avuncular
After the fight, Wei Wuxian sits with Jin Ling for a chat, and gives him the classic uncle advice "have as many fights as possible while you're young, because when you're older you'll have to be mature and get along with people."
Tumblr media
I love Wei Wuxian so much.
For contrast, Jin Ling says that Jin Guangyao tells him not to get in fights. This makes Wei Wuxian seem like the cooler elder, but it also has a more sinister element, of Jin Guangyao holding Jin Ling back. Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian grew up constantly fighting with each other--sparring as well as informal fights, presumably. And their cultivation was super strong, partly as a result of that.
Wei Wuxian takes the opportunity to tell Jin Ling that he's not in love with Qin Su any more, because he's transferred his affections to someone else. Obviously Hanguang-Jun is the someone else, given that they've been inseparable for weeks. To keep Jin Ling from yelling while he explains, he clamps his hand over Jin Ling's mouth.
The thing is, in order to effectively clamp your hand over someone's mouth, there has to be something behind them--a wall, the mattress, your own torso, or something else solid. Otherwise they can just jerk their head backwards to get away from your hand. Or they can stand up and walk away, even.
Tumblr media
Jin Ling, hilariously, does not realize this, and spends a ridiculously long time sitting still and making angry faces while Wei Wuxian rests his hand on his face.
Spy Game
Later that night, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji get ready for some shenanigans.
Tumblr media
Not the sexy kind, alas, just some paperman snooping.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian, because he's facing serious danger, is feeling extra playful and cute, and he takes time to goof around with Lan Wangji before getting down to business.
Tumblr media
In paperman form, he's able to do some things that the censors overlook, including tugging on Lan Wangji's headband and apparently blowing him a kiss. In the book and the donghua, he catches onto Lan Wangji's lip on his way down his face, too.
Tumblr media
One thing that's kind of muted in the live action as compared to the novel is how much Lan Wangji enjoys Wei Wuxian's childish and playful behavior. Lan Wangji never got to be playful as a child, but with Wei Wuxian he can cut loose--which he does mostly in the sack or when they're drinking together. But even when he stays in control of himself, he likes Wei Wuxian's silliness.
He tells Paper-Xian, tenderly, to be very careful, before he sends him on his way.
The Adventures of Paperman
The CGI department outdoes itself with paperman, making an animated character so adorable I'd be happy to watch a whole episode of him.
Tumblr media
Paper-Xian sneaks into JGY's study and pokes around, finding an empty envelope. Then he listens and watches while Qin Su stumbles in, retching.
She's followed closely by Jin Guangyao; they proceed to have an absolutely fucking endless argument in which the words "sister," "brother," "incest" "rapist dad" are never said, instead using vagueburger phrasing like "this matter."
Tumblr media
Jin Guangyao does freely admit to killing their kid, though, and wants to know who told Qin Su about it so he can kill them, too. She won't tell him, shockingly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jin Guangyao ends the fight by putting a paralysis spell on his wife and then making her go to sleep with another spell, which is the cultivator equivalent of saying "I've said what I had to say and I need some space."
He takes her into a secret room where he is also keeping a bunch of talisman-protected stuff and a shockingly small number of books.
Tumblr media
Seriously, as a person who has way too many books, I am personally offended by the way Jin Guangyao wastes shelf space in his secret room.
As Paper-Xian sneaks around the room, Jin Guangyao helpfully pulls aside the curtain covering the shelf with Nie Mingjue's head on it, so he can grouse at NMJ for (figuratively) haunting him. Seriously? Dude, you keep a guy's head on your bookshelf, he gonna haunt ya.
Tumblr media
The episode ends with Paper-Xian bowing (adorably) to Nie Mingjue, and then sitting laying on his face, which would make BOTH Lan brothers jealous if they found out.
Tumblr media

I love your larger age gap Nie Bros au! I want to float the idea of a role reversal larger age gap au where Nie Huaisang is the much older sibling of the pair, and Nie Mingjue is the baby brother.
Whew.
Honestly, it would lean more towards the "bitter" side of bittersweet, because Nie Huaisang has spent his entire fourteen/fifteen years of life knowing that even if his father has tried to love him, even though he has tried to be a good son, he's not the kind of heir his father or the sect wants and never will be. He's sharp and clever, but also small and sickly and exhausted easily and will never be a good night hunter or battle leader. He's so very un-Nie-like that only the fact that he shares his father's eye color and a few of his facial features keeps people from making accusations about his parentage (and even that doesn't stop them sometimes).
But at least his father never tried to replace him or his deceased mother, right?
And then, right after his father has just died, a midwife shows up with a strong healthy baby and a bundle of paperwork declaring the child fully legitimate, and Huaisang has to grapple with the realization that his father did very much try to get a replacement, and since the paperwork is all nice and legal, the elders and senior disciples likely knew about it and said nothing.
He wants to scream or vomit or break things or hit someone, but he does none of the above and just sits beside the crib and stares at nothing while the elders debate his future like he's not even present.
Then there is a little tug on his hair, and when he looks down, little Mingjue has a fistful of it stuffed in his mouth and is staring up at him with big green eyes and... dammit, he can't hate this kid. Mingjue doesn't know what's going on, has no idea how he's destroyed what little of a life his older brother had just by existing. It's not his fault.
Huaisang sighs and gently tugs his hair free, then reaches in to let Mingjue clutch his hand and giggle and gnaw on his fingers.
It's eventually decided that Huaisang will be (a puppet) sect leader, with provisions that as soon as the sect has decided Mingjue is old enough, he will abdicate and leave, so as not to complicate his brother's position by hanging around.
Needless to say, this does not make Huaisang feel the slightest bit better, but he has no choice other than to at least try to do well by his new title, which proves to be more difficult than it has to be because literally every single one of his decisions gets argued and debated and he's constantly being patronized even though it's apparent he's not as stupid as people expect him to be.
Ironically, the son who will replace him winds up becoming his only refuge. Since they didn't have the years of being brothers from the Reverse Nie "canon" timeline, Mingjue never grows up absorbing the disdain everyone else has for Huaisang. Rather, Mingjue has already imprinted on him and throws unholy fits when people try to keep them apart.
It's more common than not that Mingjue sleeps cuddled against his brother's chest in Huaisang's bed instead of his own crib. He starts developing a fierce protective streak before he even knows how to walk or talk, scowling at anyone whose tone he doesn't like when they talk to his brother and trying to grab for hair or throw things at them when he gets really upset about it. People learn quick that if they want to badmouth Huaisang, they have to do it out of earshot of Mingjue, and that only holds more true as he grows up and begins grasping language and starts becoming aware of the disparity between how hard his brother is trying versus the things people say about him.
Everyone else better start watching their insults before they find that Mingjue has grown to have more loyalty to the brother who loves him and does his damnedest to care for him despite all his other duties versus the sect who wants to split them up.
And that's as far as I've currently gotten with this idea.

BTS in Order - May Pt 2
From bilibili here.
May Pt 1 here
5.16 ggdd fight scene where gg is down to his white shirt.
5.17 ggdd. DD coats himself in sunscreen. Then sprays gg's hand.
- They make weird wooo noises at each other. - They have a convo while surrounded by folks doing their makeup and costumes. Lsz is in background. GG tells DD his face is like 1) bamboo shoots and 2) a pineapple. But not in a bad way. - Gg and DD are standing together, each with a fan. Then gg turns to sit on something and DD follows. I've seen this clip connected to gg's jealousy of the camera man, and gg does talk to the camera (man?) before wandering off. This playlist does not have the big dd/camera man motorcycle talk. - On a rooftop, from a distance, ggdd discuss scene with director.
5.18 dd solo. He's in post ts costume, outside, singing something. Nobody else is around.
5.18 ggdd gg pretends to throw something at dd - post-timeskip reunion scene w DD gremlin smirk (uncertain on this one. may edit to change)
5.20 DD only On a horse with nie mingjue - Under umbrella with jc, jyl, jg heir - Dd squatting next to jc. They stand up to join jyl. They walk out from the umbrella and both DD and jyl are doing a silly little lean back posture
5.21 gg only Scene where wn kills jin zixuan
5.21 ggdd They're both on horses! And with nmj. Gg twirls his flute and looks at dd
5.22 ggdd Dd in blue robes holding tea while assistant holds umbrella over him. He's talking to crew and gg. - DD describes a scene to the producer who doesn't believe it's real. Something about the demon-suppressing cave and dd with wen yuan. They bet on it and the loser has to be slapped 3x on the arm. The producer loses and he whaps her arm. GG asks if he's human and then wanders off.
5.22 dd only. With jl, jc, jzx at archery competition. JZX's dot falls off. DD says jc's purple robes are the most coquettish (骚) of all robes. DD wanders off to find gg
5.22 ggdd They're under a tent getting makeup done. I think I've seen this clip referenced as some sort of fight because of something one of them had said to the other. Gg is saying something to DD and DD looks annoyed and upset and makes some snarky response, based on his facial expression - Eventually, DD looks at his phone again and then both gg and DD are looking at DD's phone. 5.24 gg only with jc. He's eating a cracker or something. - Also with wq. He's teaching her a bro handshake. Wen Chao is there.
5.25 outdoor. Dd asks gg about his ribbon (I think). Gets a mirror to check it. (Alt 7.7) - Ggdd outdoors side by side on their phones while singing together - Ddgg and jzx shoveling poo together. Dd sprays jzx w sunscreen. Fails to pick up bucket (alt 7.7) - Ggdd on a rock together. Gg is tired, DD rambles about literally everything. Accidentally picks some plant, which means a fine (alt 7.7)
5.27 ggdd 9 minutes on a boat? (alt 6.27 (both bilibili playlist and weibo tl have 6.27 as date. another, less comprehensive bb playlist + vic have 5.27 as the date. I'll put in both places and you decide))
5.28 gg only Scene where jyl visits wwx before wedding. They're running thru the script. - Chat with yubin - Filming scene where wwx who's recovering from losing his core gets captured
5.29 ggdd Post-timeskip. Outside. Dd is on a rock that makes him tower over gg. They're chatting. Dd makes weird faces. Then they make weird noises at each other. - Then everybody's in cloud recess dress and jc and jyl are there. Everybody's comparing how tan they are. Then gg tries to poke jc's nipple. Then dd and jc try to poke each other's nipple at the same time. Fail. Finally, DD successfully pokes gg's nipple.
5.29 gg only. In mo manor. In one clip he has trouble figuring out which way he should exit. It's cute.
5.29 DD only. On roof with wires, gliding down
5.30 filming final waterfall scene. They're told they can smile at each other, then look ahead and smile bigger. Dd does an adorable gremlin smile, and the director tells him not that big.
5.30 DD with his guqin on a rock in the middle of a river. A camera drone hovers around him
5.31 ggdd having a meal in yiling (alt 6.1)

mdzs kindergarten au where 10yo nie mingjue went to pick his baby bro a-sang and baby a-ying and a-cheng look at him and go woah you're so big gege are you adult?? a-sang your brother looks so cool!! and start following mingjue gege around like little ducklings, a-sang loves this because he loves his dage and loves when people love him, so he's a very happy child; on the other side, shy a-zhan is silently jealous and bit a-sang until he bleeds because a-sang is a friend thief and a brother thief
they grow up and wei ying and jiang cheng still look up to mingjue, now 20yo, and start playing football ⚽ because of him and huaisang is like "please don't ask me to do this with you guys or i'll hate you forever and tell dage to not talk to you guys ever again" so he ends up as they supporter from the stands while they play and always ask mingjue ge to watch their big games, trying to shoot as much goals as they could; while they're at it, lan zhan, still jealous of mingjue but now for a different reason, decides to play basketball (because he is higher than everyone in school) and try to show off to his best friend wei ying in hopes he'll finally fall in love with him, and even asks huaisang for help sometimes (he doesn't know, but wei ying is already head over hills in love with his lan zhan, but is afraid of losing his friendship over a (im)possible unrequited love)
now they're all in college, jin zixuan finally realized how much of a idiot he is and now is trying to court jiang yanli (and is somewhat successful although nothing he does go exactly the way he wanted to), mingjue is married to meng yao, and both wei ying and jiang cheng still look up to him but now they're more mature about it. wei ying stopped playing football so he could chase his dream of being an artist, going to university with huaisang who's studying fashion. lan zhan thought very seriously on what he wanted to do and he more or less disappointed his uncle when he said he would go to the same uni as wei ying and huaisang because he wanted to study music. xichen asks, very seriously, if he chose this so he could still be beside wei ying and lan zhan is quite offended, but doesn't really deny it. jiang cheng went to another uni the same as jin zixuan and senior lan xichen, still plays football and still asks mingjue ge to watch his important games together with his friends and sister
and when they're finally adults, during wangxian marriage (after do many years pining stupidly), huaisang smirks and start his maid of honor speech with a power point presentation full of pictures and some short videos about their love story, talking about wei ying's crush on his dage and lan zhan's cute childish jealousy (and he can clearly see xichen's fingers in this, he didn't remember being filmed while crying that wei ying loved mingjue ge more than him, but he was six for the love of the gods!!) and proceedes to show embarrassing pictures of both of them pining from afar and everyone just laugh and share their own stories and the couple is embarrassed but a bit more in love with each other. they're all happy
by the end of all the speeches, lan zhan very calmly take the microphone, thanks everyone for being present, his uncle for everything, his parents in law for wei ying, his husband, and then he turns and look to his brother for a long moment with a tiny, tiny smirk and then look to huaisang ans says, very serious "thank you huaisang for being our friend, and for holding my brother's heart with so much affection, i can't wait for my turn to make a speech on your marriage"
wei ying and jiang cheng laugh so hard and so loud, mingjue chokes hard on his wine and laugh and cough at the same time, wei ying's parent try to hide their own laughter and uncle qiren just sigh with a head shake, while both xichen and huaisang just turn bright red with embarrassment, huaisang glaring at lan zhan before sighing loudly and muttering "i hate you, you petty bitch"

Jin Zixun has been no show for the past several cultivation conferences, so LJYx2 focuses their ire on the next worst person: Su She. It was Jueying who first saw Zhan-shushu being bothered by Su She, which got her baby justice tingling. And if Jueying is in it, big bro Jingyi is in it too.
Nie Mingjue: ...Are you going to keep doing this until everyone you don't like has to go into seclusion?
Lan Jueying, age 3: *serious baby nods*

Why don’t you like JGY depicted as a villain? Isn’t he the big bad in canon? Yeah he’s a traumatized man who did some good through the watchtowers but unlike WRH, JGS and XY, he’s very good at using his trauma as a tool of manipulation against other people.
I did a whole post about it that I now can’t find because tumblr, but that’s okay because it definitely didn’t address your take. Long story short: even canon isn’t unequivocal or gleeful about JGY’s villainy so why should fanfiction be? why should he keep being a villain in a totally different time period or canon divergence, when he has more or at least different options?
but let’s get to your version of events. here’s what I’ll give you:
stabbing himself to escape from NMJ in the book was hella manipulative and very not chill bro, but it also had nothing to do with JGY’s trauma
I guess killing the sect that killed Jin Rusong is a kind of manipulating people using the trauma of his child’s murder? but I suspect you think he killed Rusong, in which case it’s again not so much manipulation via trauma as, like, lying
he complains to Lan Xichen about how Nie Mingjue is treating him? Mingjue sees that as manipulation! I think Lan Xichen sees it as friends confiding in each other. also if it is manipulation, he’s in fact not very good at it because Xichen doesn’t do anything
in fact for most of the story people seem to look down on JGY for his trauma? it’s kind of like a source of ridicule and fear mostly?
but okay I assume you’re really thinking about the Guanyin Temple, which in the first case I’d argue is like….. a very extreme circumstance that is maybe not totally illustrative of how he conducts himself in the rest of his life? but yes, he does use his past traumas to try and give context to his actions in hopes that someone who is very important to him can understand why he acted the way he did and thus maybe not hand him over to be executed. how dare he.

Me telling blakitu how, even tho it is a really important part of the story, the whole nie mingjue and jin guangyao story arc was difficult to go through because i found them annoying
Them telling me they skipped this part and was not sure what happened during it
It was my time to rent : big bro General of the army being man, being soldier and making his anger issues the problem of everyone. He bullies jgy a lot and wants him dead. Lil bro huaisang is not viril and that's not acceptable. He HAS to destroy what makes his brother's personnality and force him to become an alpha man grrrr.............. but then jgy got fed up and instead of serving him soup in a plate with a fork, he dedided to kill him softly (it was not, it was violent) with his (demonic) song
But at the end of the day, their story is still peak tragedy

If you like the Nie bros you should read this fic!
Summary: Five times Nie Mingjue got his way just by saying “Didi”. Being a big brother to a crafty, stubborn Nie Huaisang isn’t easy, but Dage isn’t above using a little manipulation of his own. 5+1
Also @hiddenfiresindeed wrote a follow-up to one of the chapters for me and it’s so good, just some great hurt NHS and worried/comforting NMJ. Mind the warnings though if you want to read it!

I've seen a few "What your favourite (insert X fandom) ship says about you" videos and posts, and thought I'd make my own about some of MY favourite pairings (spoiler - they're all NHS based - big surprise to anyone who follows me >.<), all of which I have written before.
Be warned, I poke fun at them and myself - this is all for shits and giggles :D

Have seen talk of non-fatal and non-romantic hanahaki and the following beast entered my brain.
Jiang Cheng
He starts coughing up lavender-tinted petals as a child. Everyone thinks it's from an unrequited crush and thinks it's cute and will go away on its own one day. Nobody really notices the petals are the same shade as Jiang Fengmian's robes nor that they get worse after Wei Wuxian is brought to Lotus Pier.
After WWX enters the family, some of the petals start taking on an aqua/teal colouring, and they always come on strongest after a derisive scolding from Madame Yu about how he's not enough and he can't allow the son of a servant to show him up.
The day WWX leaves with the Wen remnants, scarlet-tinted petals join the mix. Eventually Jiang Yanli marries and leaves Lotus Pier and every time she sees JC, her first words are always about WWX or Jin Zixuan - petals of blended purple and gold join the mix.
And then JC is left completely alone with a tiny child in his arms.
He does his best to push through his grief and do his duties to sect and nephew, by now long used to the frequent petals brought up every day.
One day he's holding Jin Ling and the baby says his first word - Jiujiu.
Another day, the nanny brings JL to JC's office and puts him on the ground - the baby gets up onto wobbly legs and takes his first steps, hands reaching out for JC.
And one day JC realizes that the only times he coughs up petals anymore is when he prays at the ancestral shrine, thinking on the family he lost. And even those eventually peter away as time scabs over the wounds in his heart.
By this time, JC knows what the petals meant.
When WWX comes back from the dead, JC fears the petals will come back.
They almost do - for a moment he coughs and feels something in his throat when he watches WWX leave with LWJ... and then Jin Ling is before him, asking if he's all right, all love and concern under a tough/snarky veneer. Just like his uncle.
He never worries about coughing up a petal again.

Nie Sect headcanon of the day:
The Nie traditionally prefer riding horses to flying their sabers. They let the other sects think its for aesthetics or because their sabers are too heavy. In reality, it's because their saber spirits are terrible backseat drivers and never shut up the whole journey.

So I’ve feelings about ur two ficlets of NHS offering NMJ his body and when I said feelings I meant that I’m crying like a baby rn but I’ve to ask bc I’m a sadist how do u think LXC reacted when he realises that NMJ is back? Happy to kinda see his sworn brother? Guilty bc of his part in NMJ death? Guilty bc he knows that NMJ would have wanted him to take care in NHS but apparently he did not do a good job about that? :)
Ha HA, sorry about this incredibly dialogue-light 3zun Angst Chat that doesn’t even have NMJ in it.  I had to cut it in half because it got long and I have another ask about this exact concept anyway so w/e.
(the Nie Brothers Ritual Thing, which I’m increasingly starting to think I should title)
It’s Wangji who warns him.  And it is a warning, make no mistake, with the precise way that Xichen’s brother comes and sits at the table and pours them both exacting measures of tea.  Wangji visits him with the sort of meticulous scheduling that they once kept to when visiting Madam Lan, and today he is somewhat windswept and it should be another four days before their next appointment.  But he comes, and sits, and then says, with the kind of quiet bluntness that Xichen has always appreciated, “There is something you should know.”
Xichen sighs and sips his tea.  It’s the sharp morning blend that Wangji prefers, which is not a good sign.  If he was hoping to appease Xichen, hoping to appeal for help from the elder brother who, even now, probably couldn’t refuse him, it would be something softer, more soothing.  This means that Wangji is trying to brace Xichen for something.
Xichen doesn’t know what else he could be braced for, these days.
He finishes the cup in silence and sets it down, and Wangji fills it again, because he has the good grace not to pretend that he’s inscrutable to Xichen.  Xichen waits until the cup is full and the pot restored to its resting place, and then says, “What is it, Wangji?”
It would be a lie to say that Xichen expects it to be about anything but Jin Guangyao.  A-Yao.  His youngest sworn brother, with his gentle smile and whip-sharp tongue and bloody, bloody hands.  For the first time in decades, Lan Xichen misunderstands his brother.
“Someone else has used the sacrifice ritual,” is what Wangji says.
Xichen does the math, quickly, and tries to think of anyone who might still be loyal to Jin Guangyao.  His own collateral guilts, the price of his years of inaction, have been tallied meticulously since he went into seclusion five months ago--Jin Rusong, Qin Su, the Wens.  But who might have survived Jin Guangyao’s death throes, to bring him back?  A disciple in Lanling, seeking revenge?  How much does Jiang Wanyin hate his brother?  How much did Jin Rulan love his uncle?
And then Wangji speaks again, and Xichen’s thoughts come to a halt so quickly that his ears ring.
“Nie Mingjue is coming to Cloud Recesses.”
The world reels around Xichen, his hands shaking as they come to rest on the tabletop.  Wangji reaches out to touch his shoulders--Sizhui really has been good for him--and waits, holding Xichen steady as he breathes, and breathes, and breathes.
It isn’t until Xichen’s hands have stilled that Wangji says quietly, “I am sorry, xiongzhang.  There wasn’t--a kind way to tell you.”  And he would know, of course he would know, Xichen’s ever-steady brother who chased any word of the Yiling Patriarch like it would kill him to stop.
“Who--?” Xichen chokes out.
Wangji closes his eyes, sits back on his heels.  He is Hanguang-jun, one of the finest cultivators of their day, and he has been as strong and youthful as he was the day he left seclusion all the years since.  Now Xichen thinks he looks very tired.  Too old for this.  They grew up in a war and came of age in a genocide and Xichen allowed it and Wangji lost nearly everything in it, and he wishes that the world hadn’t come to settle so firmly on Wangji’s shoulders, after everything.
“His brother.”
Bile gathers at the back of Xichen’s tongue.  He drinks more of the sharp tea, bitter and beginning to be oversteeped, to wash it away.
Xichen can picture Nie Huaisang perfectly--as he was when they were young, when he was a student at Cloud Recesses four times over and Xichen was amused at the idea of stern, driven Mingjue trying to harass his brother into studying.  Like a hunting dog trying to corral a cat, while Huaisang blinked liquid black eyes and pouted and refused to be managed.
Xichen can picture A-Yao, dimpled and quiet and brilliant, at his elbow.
Xichen blames Nie Huaisang for the death of Jin Guangyao.  Xichen blames himself for the manipulations of Nie Huaisang.  Xichen is grateful to Nie Huaisang for his brother’s happiness.  Xichen hates Nie Huaisang for making him complicit, one last time, without even the cold comfort of knowing if he had truly been used.  Xichen loves Nie Huaisang because he knows how to love him, how to protect his dage’s brother, with the surety of years of practice.
Mingjue will be so angry that Xichen did not stop this.
“When?” Xichen whispers, and Wangji, brilliant Wangji, knows what he is asking.
“He was perhaps two hours behind us.  Wei Ying will stall him at the gate, if you need longer.”
“No,” Xichen says, and he cannot hope to make his voice strong, but he manages to keep it from shaking.  “Let him in."
“Xiongzhang,” Wangji says, watching him with their family’s brilliant golden eyes like he’s seeing every fracture line hidden under Xichen’s skin.  He thinks he’s mostly fracture lines, these days.  “This was not your fault.”
“No,” Xichen agrees, bringing one hand up to cover his own eyes.  The clear, pale light streaming through the paper covering the window seems very bright, suddenly.  His eyes are burning.  “Like so many things, this was not my fault.  Not in any way, except in idleness.”
He does not need to see Wangji’s face to know that he is only barely holding back an argument, by the iron hand of his self-control and the precepts against arguing with seniors and family members.  Wangji only follows those precepts when it suits him, these days--Chief Cultivator is a title that buys a great deal of leeway--but he keeps his silence.
Xichen’s brother has always been kind.  He drinks his oversteeped bitter tea and pretends that he does not see the escaped tears running down Xichen’s cheeks.
