BTAS Scarecrow Study - An Exercise in Line Weight

I'm working on simple things too, this was from a big study I did of the first btas scarecrow design, and with inking this one I wanted to play with line weight. It's a bit more subtle, but I also think it gives a nice cartoony vibe.

I am so sorry I got to this one so late, but, yes there are a few of the guys that tussle with seasonal allergies.

Unburied - This guy has really bad allergies. His eyes get puffy and itch which is so not his vibe.

ZY - Has slight allergies, but he's quick to combat them with allergy meds. Can't let anyone know that he might not be the perfect human specimen.

Dano - Honestly, living in one of the most disgusting versions of Gotham has made him pretty immune to gross air. Pollen is nothing in comparison to the smog of his Gotham.

YJ - Worst allergies of the bunch. Gets severely stopped up and eyes are puffy and throat is sore. Nearly brings a halt to any and all evil plans

Gotham - This one doesn't really have allergies, surprisingly. It's never really been a problem for him. And if he did, he's very quick to find a solution.

BTAA - Sniffles. He gets the sniffles, like a child. If he didn't think he'd look like a baby, he'd be wiping his nose on his sleeve constantly.

Arkham - Refuses to admit that he has allergies, however it is very obvious that he does. Please, just let him do his thing. His body will get used to it after a while, so prepare for a couple of weeks of tissues everywhere.

BTAS - Also, doesn't have a problem with allergies, never has. Doesn't see what the big deal is.

Telltale - He ... does have allergies. One of the only times you might find him slightly vulnerable. He's drowsy and grouchy, but it's balanced by his adorable sniffles.

When you love Barbara Gordon but Dickbabs is also your notp 🥂

I was oh so tempted to respond with a sarcastic remark but no. I'm actually gonna get into this one

the reason I hate dickbabs doesn't have anything to do with my love for the characters. I love dick grayson. I love barbara gordon. these aren't secrets; anyone who spends more than 30 seconds on my blog can see it. my issue with dickbabs comes from a long history of barbara being thrown with every batboy that comes along. tim in arkham knight, even bruce in btas, to name a few examples. to me this makes even dickbabs seem surface level and 2-dimensional because......dick is another batboy.

another issue I have with it is the fact that both characters are reduced to only their relationship with each other. tom taylor's recent run puts dickbabs at the forefront of a story that, if you go by the title, should be about nightwing. I don't mind romance in stories but if I am reading the nightwing comics, I want to read about nightwing. and this isn't even getting into the disgusting ableism in regards to barbara in particular! her disability, something that enabled her to become the literal capstone of the vigilante society, was retconned but guess what!!! to replace the lost representation we'll just write in a 3-legged dog!!! there's absolutely no way this is ableist or shitty!! ✨✨✨ (/s)

I also really hate how fandom (and dc) are pitting all of dick's love interests against each other. it turns babs and kori (some of my favorite heroes with their own powerful stories and personalities) into the bratty girls squabbling over the guy. and I don't even need to say why that's so upsetting to me

finally, my biggest issue is that I just?!?! don't like it very much!! they have an incredible friendship and I fucking love good friendships!!! there doesn't need to be a big reason why I dislike a ship! sometimes it just doesn't vibe with me! but in the case of dickbabs, there are a few things in specific that make me dislike it.

tldr: my dislike for dickbabs has nothing to do with how much I love/hate their characters and everything to do with the fact that I am curating my own experience with this media and if I dislike something, it is of my own choice so to assume that I have to ship dickbabs because I love barbara as a character is, frankly, childish and immature. with all the love, grow up <3

The difference in animation between s1/2 and s3 of BTAS is STARKKKKK. I did some research and found out that the purpose was to make it match the Superman style with the network change. It doesn't have that cozy-vintage hand-drawn feel anymore :/ (idc abt consistency I care abt VIBES) It's definitely.. sleeker..? Newer. Less curvy. Reminds me of the more modern DCAU shows. We'll see if the writing holds up.

I spent the last four weeks trying to finesse my way out of taking my own measurements for a final project. Several morphologists over the years have taken the exact measurements I wanted on hundreds of samples, and I spent hours and hours and hours looking for their raw datasets, but they published averages which I could not use. So I had to set up time to take the measurements myself.

Today I spent two and a half hours in the museum collections.

The main reason I resisted this part was because there were certainly better uses of my time. In the span of two hours while I took photos and measurements (plus the time I'll need to spend taking digital measurements) on just twenty specimens, I could've worked a lot more on performing really good descriptive stats or getting into the nitty-gritty of the genetics part of this project.

While all of that is true, for some reason it surprises me that I enjoyed my time deep in the collections. (For context, the whole reason I'm doing this program is because I fell in love with measuring stuff. The repetitiveness is seriously so calming. I should not have been surprised that this would've been my kind of "fun".)

There are deer heads on the walls and the musty smell of old bones. An elephant femur is hanging out nearby. It's kind of like a library for bones, really. Every surface is padded. I had a (loaned) key to get into any locker I wanted. I felt like a real morphologist for the first time today.

There's a museum near me that should be starting up a program for volunteers to do behind the scenes kind of stuff this spring. Almost definitely going to check that out.

Today I'm thankful that the lab practical should actually not be all that dreadful. I've memorized mostly everything over the course of a couple of days. We'll see though, I guess.

aaaaaaaa now to make a progress presentation in one night aaaaaa (it's planned out generally which helps (and also it's pretty short) but if I'd been smart I would've been making/collecting figures as I went along.. alas.)

[edit, 1:30ish am: progress is being made uhm but very little has been added to the presentation itself. tomorrow will not be a difficult day after that morning presentation, so I could stay up real late and nap real hard tmr then study for the practical a bit]

[edit 2: I ended up working until 6:30 am (but you know how you get slower and slower through an all nighter?), took a nap, actually woke up fairly refreshed, and presented (the part I kind of threw together in half an hour at the end of the session was the exact part my prof picked up on as being half baked lol they don't pay him the big bucks for nothing)]

Batman - One Bad Day: Mr. Freeze.

okay so. let's start with the good things? i very much like the art style and how it was painted. it looks very crunchy, dynamic, solid and expressive, and the designs are delicious. i love how freeze's first suit was inspired by btas, while the more tech-y one gave me a batman beyond vibe. batman himself was written out to be very interesting to read in this verse, especially because of his lack of clear communication and the fact that robin had to basically translate him for people more than once lol. robin was adorable and i feel him. freeze's expressions in Some panels were hilarious to me as a vic writter personally because, yeah. Yeah. thats a freeze body language alright

now onto the bad things: while paul dini's 1997 comic on mr. freeze is a classic, i don't find it very fitting in a more general sense. and i do get the feeling this is the angle this new particular script writer was going for in here too. my issue is that the whole point of freeze's character is that it's a tragic story about love. true love even, or perhaps a man who feels he doesn't have a choice and is forced (from his perspective) to hurt others in order to achieve his goal. he doesn't enjoy hurting people. he doesn't want this life of crime. all he wants is for his wife, his only love, to have a long, happy and healthy life, even if that could still mean she'd one day choose to leave him behind. you're supposed to sympathize with the character, to see him as more morally neutral and to some point even question batman's actions to put him behind bars? he is an anti-villain, not a villain, for a reason.

of course he's done terrible things and i don't excuse them, but this is a man who genuinely truly believes he doesn't have a choice in most of the things he does. when presented when a better alternative, one which is potentially less harmful for anyone, he is known to take it. he was someone who was supposedly a good person before the incident at gothcorp, someone who wanted to help people and the world, but has since started seeing everything more negatively and has started reacting with rage towards anything he may find threatening enough. this is obviously extremely unhealthy, and he definitely needs proper therapy and someone to work with him through all of it if possible.

however, the way i see it, this is a character who would definitely try to improve and better himself positively if given the chance. he craves that sense of normalcy and a less extreme lifestyle. even though he has a list of priorities, nora being at the very top, he would also much rather have what he used to have and be who he used to be, rather than what he has turned into.

the very end was probably the thing that made all of these aforementioned strikes a touch more salvageable for me. he's apprently decided to move on, to maybe improve, to do something good after so long. he feels more free, more human, and it could be a big step in the right direction both for him, and for the characterization as a whole.

I will answer right off the bat though who I think she'd have the most chemistry with and that would be BTAS!🐧 birb. And leaning more towards The New Batman Adventures where he looks posher like the 60s RL birb. (also i love paul Williams's voice so i'm biased alkfjwer) Idk if you ever watched the animated series? But I like how they wrote him in that series. Like the episode where he legit tries to go good I felt bad for him since he did a lot of faux pas, socially, and... in a lot of other stuff like even eating, and instead of anyone helping him they just made fun of him and tried to take advantage of him. But he's been shown to be romantic or open to it (romance that is) and Sophie is more open if the other person is more open. So they'd have a better time connecting. She'd find it amusing also how he has henchwomen nicknamed after birds, as well as this version, likes animals a lot. I think in the animated series his BG story, or one of them, was his mother owned a pet shop and it was not that he was old money like in other versions. Generally, this version of the round birb is a lot more sane but still sneaky, but smooth and calm so they'd complement each other well. ALSO I LOVE THE THOUGHT OF HER BEING TALLER THAN HIM AND JUST LEANING DOWN AND GIVING HIM KISSES! like fucking uhhhh morticia and gomez vibes.

NOW Gotham 🐧 is who I originally made Sophie for. (yes i am that person who makes ocs cuz i want to ship canon characters alkfjwerkl) It's a lot more difficult but that's because they made Gotham Oz a lot more complex and complicated. As well as unhinged. They added Danny Devito Penguin as much as they added classic Penguin also. The actor actually even made remarks how they added Devito Pengy in. Um but it would really only work after that 10 year stint in Blackgate because if they met during like any of the seasons when the show was going on... She'd just be like "i hope this man dies." also they wrote him to be in love with The Riddler. Or they baited it soooo much but you know these CW writers or Fox writers or whatever. But they totally had feelings for each other! Or it was so one sided for Oz. BUT I DIGRESS. I really just wanted the chemistry of them having a back and forth, being cunty to each other but they work so well in business and playing games. It was less about love and romance at first and more... Gotham is a big chessboard and Oswald is a Chessmaster and she could be one also, but prefers to be Chessmaster Sidekick trope. I just wanted a character that could outperform him and for him to know that but can't do anything about it... Because she can use magic and simply petrify him, so he'd have to figure a way out around that or get her to join him but along the way they fall for each other. But it takes a long ass time since fucking Gotham is full of betrayal and shit happening every episode so his ass is super paranoid, insecure, a sociopath. I just want conflict.

Arkham!Games Penguin... Total bastard. Sophie would just be 'this man needs to leave' just like how she feels about Black Mask at that point. But at least Black Mask I think.. I think if I remember right he freaks out when his GF gets killed so even Roman kind of has more of a romantic or at least possessive bone in him. Because OZ in that game is such... a little bastard lmao also he's sort of not smart. At the beginning of the second game bruce wayne is seriously doing parkour right in front of him and he doesn't make the connection that could be Batman. tdlr he's not romantic and if she is not desired by her SO then snake lady don't want him.

he’s kinda short but he’s not super pissy about it.

he doenst like you looking taller than him in photos so you always have to crouch. in person he doesn't really care. he’ll probably use your height to his advantage, either in a fight or just around the house with his death traps. 

constantly sticking his face in your tummy or chest for hugs. will motor boat you if he thinks he can get away with it. i dont care that he’s the oldest riddler he can be immature when he thinks no one is looking. 

Zero year Riddler

finally! an equal! someone worthy of status at his side!

you two are going to rule over gotham like gods! the only thing that can stop you is door frames and low ceilings. 

has put truck backing up noises on his phone to play while you walk just to mess with you. don't worry, he wont do it if it upsets you, hes just a wind up merchant. 

likes to pretend he’s smaller than you and cant reach things so you’ll do it for him. yes he is that lazy.

On one of my other drawings, someone mentioned that they got big brother/little sister vibes from Jervis and Mary...and the more I thought about it, that could technically be true. Mary is about 30 when she first appears in BTAS, and Jervis looked to be somewhere in his late 30s or early 40s, so they are close enough in age to have possibly grown up together. I don't think of them as siblings necessarily, but I could see them as cousins or neighbors who grew up near each other. Who knows? Maybe Jervis used to babysit for Mary's parents or something.

Comics this week (1/27/2021)?

X-Men #17: I guess Hickman told his editors “yeah this issue’s relatively filler and is pretty much here to set up a single straightforward Checkov’s Gun for later, so I guess you can put whoever needs to work on it” so that’s how that happened.

Shang-Chi #5: A nice little mini, but I’m happy Yang’s moving on to my boys.

Avengers #41 (got this late from last week): That patented Aaron-brand Avengers nonsense I love, how I missed you.

Daredevil #26: ...huh. Don’t take that as a condemnation on my part, that’s simply my plain reaction to the developments of an issue of comics I enjoyed. Huh.

Stillwater #5 (ditto): SO THERE’S SOME REAL SHIT FOR OUR TIMES

The Department of Truth #5: Love me that looooore, baybeeeee

We Only Find Them When They’re Dead #5: I did have to stop a few pages in to refresh myself on a few names, but gosh can I not wait for acts two and three.

Future State: Aquaman #1: I figured this one could go either way since I’ve read some work by Brandon Thomas I vibed with and one or two that baffled me, so happy to say this one worked out really well. And very happy to be getting Sampere on Action soon.

Future State: Batman/Superman #1: I’ve seen folks unsurprisingly let down by this as a pretty straightforward World’s Finest teamup for Yang’s debut that for the most part could have just as easily taken place now, but the more I sit on this one the more it grows on me. There’s a sense of melancholy knowing this is probably Clark and Bruce’s last adventure together like this before what’s about to happen to each of them in this timeline, a tension they don’t know exists even as we can see their friendship start to fray that crucial bit - not because they’re at moral loggerheads, but because the changes in their lives are driving them in such different directions. I like the idea of a little slice of a ‘future’ event like this having a chapter set just long enough from now that the changes in motion are irreversible, but not far enough out yet to have visibly shaken things up permanently, and how that changes the tone of the characters’ adventures at the unknowing last point where they’re still recognizable. Anyway, high-falutin’ aside, it’s Yang and Oliver, of course it’s a very readable superhero comic even sans context.

Future State: Dark Detective #2: Very much enjoyed the fleshing-out here of Bruce’s new means and methods of operation, and the Red Hood backup works surprisingly well too (between this and DCeased, is DC making Jason Todd and Rose Wilson a thing?). My confidence in the upcoming Tamaki Detective increases accordingly.

Future State: Superman vs. Imperious Lex #1: This is gonna disappoint a lot of folks, not because it’s anything less than really good, but because it’s ‘merely’ really good when it’s the Flintstones team reuniting for their big, basically continuity-free crack at Superman. Probably that’s in no small part because it feels like Russell modulating his voice a bit to prove he can play nice with the other books in the same way as his Sinestro one-shot awhile back. Still fine with me and still one of Future State’s better offerings, but not the clear home run it seemed at announcement.

Future State: Legion of Superheroes #1: Well THAT’S not who I was expecting the much-advertised traitor to be. Lots of cool details here I’m looking forward to seeing play out when the book proper returns.

Strange Adventures #8: I want Gerads on a Flash book and Shaner drawing as many forest landscapes as possible going forward.

Batman: The Adventures Continue #8: Pretty standalone after how #1-7 formed a loose arc, but this taps the best of BTAS’s treatment of its villains and is a nice little epilogue.

Batman: Black and White #2: 

* The King/Gerads Batman story is an extremely King/Gerads Batman story, in the best way.

* The Campbell Batman and Catwoman story plays with the format, such as it is, in the most amusing way of this mini so far or any of the preceding Batman: Black and White books I recall.

* The Hardman/Bechko joint is pretty and perfectly serviceable.

* The Weaver story I don’t even kind of get but it sure is lovely.

* The Aja story doesn’t live up to its art or its unique format, but it’s still David Aja drawing Batman so it’s fine.

* Love the Villalobos pinup, glad he’s still got the occasional DC gig even if he’s making his main comics home elsewhere these days.

The Other History of the DC Universe #2: It doesn’t blow the doors down in the same way as #1, but I don’t know that it could - it isn’t introducing the concept, and it’s juggling two characters with I believe much less defining history than the singular lead of the debut. Still a great comic, and it’s with this issue it hits me that in following B- and C-list characters specifically rather than your Green Lanterns or Cyborgs, the book gets to have its cake and eat it too by conveying a superheroic POV while still making them spectators to the biggest developments both world-shaking and culturally significant. And yes, very much looking forward to what Ridley will do with Superman in Red and Blue after the balancing act he continues to strike here, I feel like he could be to All-Star Superman what Snyder was to Morrison’s Batman in presenting what those books were getting at in a way the general audience can latch onto this time (though in this case probably with something a little more on the prestige side rather than a summer crossover).

Oh HELL yeah. For Btas! Jervis:

Sexuality Headcanon: Bisexual. He went to an all-boys’ school as a child and had a crush on his best friend. His first crush on a woman (who wasn’t Hayley Mills when he was a kid) was his university professor.

Gender Headcanon: GNC cis dude.

A ship I have with said character: HatterCrow and BatHat (including pre-Hatter Bruce/Jervis). Sometimes IvyHatter and CatHat.

A BROTP I have with said character: Ivy (enemies to friends), Harley (Dr/Patient relationship to friends), Alice (friends to restraining order to friends again (in Shrimp’s perfect world lol). Riddler (competitive friendship).

A NOTP I have with said character: Probably Alice/Jervis even though I did ship them when I was a kid. Even then it had to be a big “What-if”. I remember reading fics on FF.net and even dA back then that made it pretty compelling and sweet but in general, without the astronomical chance where they could be together in all the right circumstances, it’s gotta be a hard pass from me. I really just wanted to see them both happy and friends again because I really like their dynamic before Jervis fucked everything up.

A random headcanon: Okay I’m going to list a lot because it’s my blog and I feel like it.

He was born 1952 which would make him 40 in his first appearance.

I think he had a normal childhood, his parents and older sister Lorina loved him and still do.

He was raised Catholic but is now agnostic.

I think he and Crane met before they both turned to crime so naturally that’s what draws them to each other.

He made his own Hatter costume. He wears different colours of the same outfit but mostly sticks with the blue one.

Idk I get the vibe that he’s a smoker but like really descreet about it. And he only does it when he’s really stressed about something and the tea isn’t helping.

General Opinion over said character: Jervis is a bastard and I love him. He’s my comfort character whom I love to roast.
