#big cypress reservation
Photo
Tumblr media
Sunset - February 2020 I try not to be on my bike after dark at Big Cypress, or at least not outside of the Big Cypress Community. There are too many things which hunt in the darkness and I really would not want to run over– or into– a large alligator. One evening, however, I was running late and captured this image of the setting sun reflecting off the waters of the roadside canal just outside of the community. I did make it back to the RV park before total darkness, but I had to hurry. There isn’t much twilight in southern Florida. MWM

Charlie kept a cheat sheet nowadays. It turned out Greek gods got extremely upset when you did not know who exactly they were. It was honestly a bit dramatic, but then again, not much worse than other expensive hotels with entitled regulars. She glances at the list in her phone one more time as she gets off the bus. (Odd that there was an extra bus stop here now, when she came her for her job interview she had to walk two blocks.) Some of the entries could really do with some additional details.
Aphrodite, goddess of romance and sex. (and love??) [act more impressed than you are]
Hephaistos, god of forging, crafting (?) [no small talk]
Apollo (like the rocket), god of god of music, poetry, the sun (?). Twin (?) brother of Artemis. Gets very emotional over various kinds of decorative vegetation. Not good with Helios, Hermes. [Keep away from Cassandra!!]
Zeus, god of…lightning? Heaven?? “King” of the gods. Has a suite permanently reserved for him, but is hardly ever here. Insane policy. Has something to do with the “no mortal guests allowed”. No one will tell me what. [Do not mention around Ganymedes.]
“Hi Charlie!”
Her head snapped up from her phone with immediate suspicion. It had been weeks since Cassandra ever felt the need to use her customer service voice on her. “Cas…?”
She was standing unnaturally prim behind reception desk and her smile was plastered onto her face with uncanny precision.
“Cas,” Charlie repeated warily. “What's going on...”
“The chief called in sick today,” Cassandra replied with terrified cheerfulness. “He left you in charge.”
Charlie’s stomach turned over. “He did what.”
“You already deal with all the customers all the time!” Cassandra said hastily. “And the rest of us know the drill. No one will make trouble for you, we promise!”
Charlie threw up her hands and hurried behind Cassandra's counter. “Is this about that Theseus mortal that Poseidon made a reservation for?” She had never seen the manager look so miserable as upon hearing her read out a name.
Cassandra gave her a deeply apologetic look. “He's only staying the one day and night. Please don’t leave.”
“Of course I’m not going to leave.” She groaned. “When are the new arrivals due?”
“Helios at 9:26, Theseus at 10:02 and Hestia and Demeter at 10:43,” Cassandra answered promptly. It was an absolute blessing to have her always know exactly when people would be arriving, or leaving, or putting in complicated requests.
“Alright, fine,” Charlie sighed. “I will do a quick check around then and be back here at a quarter past nine.”
“I’ll be here,” Cassandra sighed in relief.
“Honestly,” Charlie muttered, hurrying down to the kitchens. “If he thinks the previous raise covers this he’s wrong.”
In the kitchens all was under control, however, and Tantalus sent her on her way with a freshly baked bun which improved her mood greatly. She paused in the garden to cram the rest of it into her mouth before entering the stables. The gardens were beautiful, if a little unnerving. The hyacinths and daffodils had been in bloom for way too long now. And Charlie had never heard you could cultivate anemones in a fountain basin.
The stables, hidden behind a row of cypresses, were less unnerving but far more chaotic. They were monstrously big, but Charlie had by now learned they needed to be. Most of the guests had distressingly inconvenient modes of transportation. Miss Eos was alright, she usually came with just the two horses. Her brother Helios, however, came with no less than eight. (Plus a flaming chariot that took up a ridiculous amount of space.) Ares had only four horses, but they did breathe fire. (Very difficult in a barn environment with lots of hay around.) And Poseidon’s horses dripped sea foam everywhere.
The horses were nothing to Dionysus’ panthers though. Or Apollo’s swans, for that matter. Charlie was sure she didn’t know a more potentially vicious bird, and they kept trying to get into the pool, which made the nymphs uncomfortable. As far as birds were concerned, Aphrodite’s doves were a lot less intimidating, but there were an awful lot of them.
Luckily Marsyas seemed completely unbothered this morning. He answered Charlie’s questions with his usual good humour and assured her he had room for Helios’ chariot and horses all prepared and fireproofed. So there was nothing to delay her and she returned to the lobby only a little after nine.
When she entered from the direction of the pool area – it had been restored very well since Poseidon’s last visit – a hooded figure was stood at the counter and Cassandra looked unusually nonplussed.
“I trust you have a reservation?” she said, uncertainty leaking through her polite smile. “Which divinity booked for you?”
“No one.” The guest’s voice was soft, almost hesitant, but Charlie heard every word. “I have no reservation. I came because...because I am called upon.” She said it as if it was a new thing. New and wondrous, but beyond doubt. “I am expected.”
“I...um…” Cassandra began, but by then Charlie had crossed the lobby and as she turned to the counter she suddenly caught sight of the guest’s face.
She halted, her professionalism flagging in a moment of startled recognition. Her mouth moved before she could stop herself. “You’re Medusa!”
The guest turned, looking without meeting Charlie’s gaze, but Cassandra gaped at her. “You know who she is? You didn’t know Aphrodite, but her you know?”
“Of course I do,” Charlie answered, looking at the halo of snakes framing Medusa’s head within the confines of her hood. It was an unmistakable image. And the story, the name, it just stuck in the mind. At least the main parts. Defiance and strength and survival…
Medusa met her gaze, slowly, as if she expected something bad to happen that Charlie was not aware of. Charlie looked back at her with as open an expression as she could. Sometimes the customers service smile didn’t cut it. The snakes looked curious, and Medusa herself looked at her, it seemed to Charlie, as if she was as bewildered as Cassandra to be standing here, checking into Hotel Olympus as the gods did whenever they came to witness the voices who worshipped them.
“Cassandra, I believe madam wanted a room?”
“Yes, but, she isn’t- I mean she didn’t used to be—”
Charlie took care never to interrupt Cassandra, who was so used to not being listened to. This time she made an exception. “The green suite, I think, Cassandra, if you would. For our divine guest.”
“...yes, right away.” Cassandra regained her composure and turned around to select the key.
“Welcome to Hotel Olympus,” Charlie said with a bow of her head. “I hope you will enjoy your stay.”
Medusa smiled.

From the majestic Golden Gate Bridge to the relaxed ambiance of Santa Monica, this journey is a symphony of beaches, surf, and breathtaking sunsets.
The Pacific Coast Highway: A Ribbon of Scenic Wonders

Setting the Stage: The Golden Gate Bridge
Our coastal adventure begins in San Francisco, home to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. As the crimson-orange towers rise against the backdrop of the fog-kissed bay, it's a visual overture to the wonders that await on this journey. Take a leisurely stroll along the bridge's pedestrian walkway for panoramic views of the city, Alcatraz Island, and the Pacific Ocean.
Cruising Along Highway 1
Hit the road on the legendary Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1), a ribbon of asphalt that hugs the rugged coastline. The journey is as much about the drive as it is about the destinations. With the Pacific Ocean to your west and cliffs adorned with wildflowers to your east, the scenery is a constant companion.
Charming Towns and Coastal Retreats
Half Moon Bay: Coastal Tranquility
Tumblr media
Our first pitstop is Half Moon Bay, a coastal town known for its laid-back atmosphere and pristine beaches. Explore the historic Main Street, lined with boutique shops and charming cafes. For nature enthusiasts, a visit to the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve unveils tide pools teeming with marine life.

Join locals and visitors alike as they embrace the surfing lifestyle that defines this vibrant beach community.
Nature's Spectacle: Coastal State Parks
Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park
Return to the coastline, and venture into Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, where lush forests meet the sea. The Overlook Trail offers breathtaking views of McWay Falls and the surrounding coastline. It's a sanctuary of tranquility, with the rhythmic sounds of crashing waves and the rustling leaves creating a symphony of nature.
Point Lobos State Natural Reserve
Explore the pristine beauty of Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, often referred to as the "crown jewel" of California's state park system. Hike along coastal trails that lead to hidden coves, and witness seals, sea lions, and a variety of bird species. The reserve is a testament to California's commitment to preserving its natural treasures.
Santa Monica: The Grand Finale
Sunset at the Santa Monica Pier
As our coastal journey reaches its grand finale, Santa Monica welcomes you with open arms. The iconic Santa Monica Pier, with its Ferris wheel and carnival atmosphere, sets the stage for a perfect ending. Join the locals for a sunset stroll along the sandy shores or ride the Ferris wheel for a panoramic view of the coastline bathed in the golden hues of dusk.
Embracing the Laid-Back Vibes
Santa Monica's laid-back vibes make it an ideal spot to unwind after the road trip. Explore the vibrant Third Street Promenade, dotted with shops, restaurants, and street performers. The beachfront bike path invites you to rent a bike and pedal along the ocean, embracing the carefree spirit of Southern California.
Practical Tips for Your Coastal Adventure
Timing Your Trip
The beauty of California's coast is accessible year-round, but certain seasons offer unique experiences. Spring and fall provide pleasant weather and fewer crowds, making it an ideal time for a road trip. Summers can be busy, especially in popular beach towns, while winter brings the possibility of dramatic storm-watching scenes.
Pack Essentials for the Drive
Ensure your road trip is smooth by packing essentials. Sunglasses, sunscreen, and comfortable clothing are a must, as are your camera and binoculars for wildlife watching. Plan your accommodations in advance, especially during peak seasons, to secure the best beachfront stays.
Embrace Spontaneity
While it's essential to plan key stops and accommodations, leave room for spontaneity. Some of the best experiences on this coastal journey may come from impromptu detours to hidden beaches or roadside attractions. Embrace the freedom of the open road.
Conclusion
In conclusion, road tripping through California's coastal paradise is a journey that transcends the ordinary. From the misty cliffs of Big Sur to the sandy shores of Santa Monica, every mile is a brushstroke in a masterpiece of nature. As a seasoned traveler, I can attest that this coastal symphony of beaches, surf, and sunsets is an ode to the soul-stirring beauty of California's coastline. So, buckle up, roll down the windows, and let the salty breeze guide you on an unforgettable road trip along the sunlit shores of the Golden State.

5 more rides
I am creeping up on the June distance goal. I will make last years number barring accidents. I am well short of my averages, but it is what it is.
One issue is the club is doing relatively modest rides for my group. It is almost to the point where I have to go out on my own to get any distance. I empathize with the slower people but there has to be an improvement or I will not stay. The parties are fine though.
My fitness is fine. My FFF for the last few rides has been under 5 consistently. That includes a ride with hills and two solid big climbs.
There is a long weekend coming up and I will try to do Cypress if the conditions are right.
I have reserved my room for the Fondo in Whistler. At least that is all set.
The weather is hopefully settling in to summer clear skies and warmer days. I like warm to hot days for riding.
My HUNT Wheels are doing fine so far. At least one flat was a defective patch and the other a factory defective tube. I will not buy cheap again. I have old continental tubes in them now and they are holding pressure fine. (knock wood)

Enjoy Yourself at Florida's Big Cypress National Preserve
The theme parks of Florida are great and are "must-see" attractions for all visitors to this state, however, some of Florida's natural attractions should also be put on your list of places to visit when you plan your vacation. If you are headed towards Miami or Ft. Meyers then the Big Cypress National Preserve is a destination which will let you get up close to Florida's wildlife and enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities.
Big Cypress National Preserve consists of 729,000 acres of freshwater swamp. Here you will find tropical and temperate plants and a wide diversity of birds and animals including the endangered Florida panther. In the past this part of Florida was home to the Seminole and Miccosukee peoples and the preserve protects their traditional customs in addition to its role of providing recreational opportunities to residents of south Florida and to visitors.
The preserve has several prime areas for wildlife viewing and bird watching. If you want to see alligators and manatees then the HP Williams Roadside Park, the Big Cypress Swamp Welcome Center and the Oasis Visitor Center are the places to go. If you take a canoe out on the Turner River during the winter you will also be treated to the site of many wading birds. If you prefer not to get wet you can take a walk through the Kirby Storter Roadside Park and enjoy the views of nature there.
The preserve, as would be expected, has many designated trails for hiking and it is also possible Outdoors activities in Miami to hike through unmarked territory. The best season for hiking is the dry season, though some hikers, who are ready to walk in waist-high water, enjoy the challenges of the wet season. Whichever season you choose, you will be rewarded with unique views of untouched wildlife. You can download Google Map Files and Garmin Map Source Files of the hiking trails of the preserve if you want to start planning your hikes now.
If you do not want to go it alone you can take advantage of various Ranger Led Programs that are available with the staff of the National Park Service. In addition, there are commercial tours run by permitted commercial service operators.
You may prefer to paddle your way through the preserve and that's why canoeing and kayaking are popular here. The prime paddling season is from November through March when temperatures and bugs are tolerable. However, if you don't mind these obstacles you can paddle through the preserve year-round.
There are various designated paddling routes and it can take from three to seven hours to complete the routes. It of course depends on the tidal conditions, where you start and end your trips and your paddling or kayaking skills. You will need intermediate canoe paddling skills or kayaking skills to handle the conditions of this preserve and the park service cautions you "to make arrangements for parking a second vehicle at the end of your paddling trip to shuttle you back to the starting point."
Many families enjoy camping and fishing in the preserve. Campgrounds within the preserve are offered on a first-come first-served basis, no reservations are accepted. There are nominal fees for some of the campgrounds in the period December 15 through April 15 and there are free campgrounds within the preserve as well.

Ooooh! Feel like telling me a little about "Bloodlines Duology"? It's giving me vampire vibes and you can't go wrong with vampire vibes :D <3
(From the WIP Folder Game)
Of course I can~ Though, Made to Taste is my WIP that actually has vampires and stars a dhampir. Bloodlines has a main character that does have some of the vibes like blood giving some powers, being sexy, and a sort of secretive/manipulative killing tactic. This is Gwyar Cypress, and she's one of two main characters. She's comething she just calls a corrupted, as she knows she is somewhat like the wood nymphs and fae of that sort that never show around society, but she's also estranged from that world and hides to blend into the normal one. She only recalls being brought to life fully grown and alert some years ago under the large cypress tree outside the town she lives in. She was covered in blood and had to learn a lot from a family of woodworkers that took her in. Without spoiling too much, something occurs over those years she cannot abide and she finds out she does have memories, memories tied to al the people who died in and around this town and that tree she was born from. She was meant to be a normal nymph or something she feels, but the blood steeped in this land corrupted her, so she goes on a revenge quest with the powers she finds she has to rid the city of violent criminals the hard way. Some of her powers include: can show her bloodstained wings and fly, can lick blood from someone and be able to track them for a while, can make blood pacts the other person cannot betray at risk of immediate death, and a couple more. She's pretty good with knives. She takes on a job at a tavern called Hightide and is a songstress there for her occupation. Her voice draws a big crowd of both regulars and people passing through, so it allows her to gather information and scope out newcomers to the town and make sure all is well. If it's not, she has no reservations on killing. It's a trade town, so a lot of people come by day to day. Here's a sketch of Gwyar herself.
Tumblr media
and a picture of her wings too
Tumblr media
There is also the other protag she calls Luith (his name is super long) who is a half orc half elf bard who joins up for the adventure~ He's sweet and tries to help with her figuring out more about who and what she is and there's a nice romance of two outsiders because of how they were born and look. Here's a picture of Luith. He is my friend's character (the one who does the art for Arigale and will do the art for this as well - Fractured Fable) and she is going to write this WIP with me as a collaboration. They are also working on their own series of novels too!
Tumblr media
There is a Made to Taste page on my blog proper here if you'd like to know more about the one with actual vampires!

Owl - February 2020 This owl was roosting in the branches next to a small canal. His camouflage made him almost impossible to see, but once I spotted him his coloring combined with the mottled branch on which he sat and the lush green background gave me this nice image. MWM

Residing in Brooklyn's Woodhaven
Woodhaven is a neighborhood in Queens, not Brooklyn, as was originally reported, in New York City. Richmond Hill to the north, Ozone Park to the south, Cypress Hills to the west, and Forest Park to the east are its neighbors.
While it was primarily farmland in the early 1800s, Woodhaven had a long and illustrious history. The area started as a residential community and became more urbanized in the late 19th century, when numerous single-family homes and apartment complexes were built. The area today has a diversified population and is renowned for its tree-lined lanes, old buildings, and neighborhood spirit.
The Woodhaven Culture and Historical Society, which is devoted to preserving the history and culture of the neighborhood, and the Forest Park Carousel, a vintage carousel situated inside the limits of Forest Park, are two significant sites in the neighborhood. Also situated in the area is the Queens Public Library's Woodhaven Branch.
Many modes of public transit, including the J/Z metro lines and numerous bus lines, serve Woodhaven. Due to its proximity to major thoroughfares like the Jackie Robinson Parkway and the Van Wyck Expressway, the area is also easily reachable by vehicle.
Overall, Woodhaven is a thriving and friendly neighborhood with a fascinating past and a strong feeling of civic pride. Read this article about living in Ridgewood, Brooklyn.
Tumblr media
Brooklyn's neighborhood of Woodhaven is where you may find it in New York City. These are a few activities in Woodhaven:
Forest Park: This big park has a lot of things to do, like hiking routes, picnic spots, sporting venues, a golf course, and a skate park.
Woodhaven Historical Society: This organization provides tours and details on Woodhaven's past, including its buildings and residents.

Big Cypress Swamp: Best Location For Man-Thing Fantasies
@Gerberphiles, my respect for Steve Gerber grows everyday. Now I can find a vacation spot where I can fantasize about @Marvel Man-Thing in the Big Cypress Swamp.
I’ve been reading so much Man-Thing, I might as well make a post in relation to it. The Murk Monster dwells in a swamp in the Florida Everglades between two key locations. It just so happens that a very real swamp exists between a Seminole Reservation and Lake Okeechobee. Thankfully the Big Cypress Swamp has neither a giant plant man or a nexus of all realities. Or at least as far was we…

Carrying flags, banners and homemade signs, they traced the route of the Tamiami Trail through the Big Cypress National Preserve, which slices through the Everglades and blocks its flow. Walkers included members of the Miccosukee, Seminole, Lakota [...] nations and others. [...]
They came from cities, reservations and everywhere in between. Toddlers and grandparents, students and professionals, united to defend the sacred: Florida’s Everglades. Those who turned out for the two-day, 38-mile roadside march hoped to bring attention to this critically important wet wilderness and the controversial handover of permitting control from the federal entities who have long held it to chronically understaffed Florida agencies. Miccosukee advocate Betty Osceola has organized prayer walks before, but this one had particular urgency for her.
Last month [December 2020], the U.S. government turned over wetland permitting authority to the state of Florida, giving it control of Section 404 of the federal Clean Water Act, despite outraged reaction from Florida’s Native people and many who support the environment. [...] The goal [of the walk] was to invite others from the wider community to “Stand with us and walk to educate and defend her from this atrocity the state and the federal (governments) plan to do.”
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the EPA have historically overseen the development of wetlands, but now the state will supervise dredge and fill permits, something the Miccosukee and Seminole tribes never signed off on and which advocates oppose. [...] Though the walk ended after two days, the hard work continues, Osceola said. “We need to continue to flood (the government agencies). It’s going to take public pressure to get them to do the right thing,” she said. [...]

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Thursday [17 December 2020] announced it would give oversight of Florida waterways to the state. [...] Florida is not just home to the Everglades, swamps, wetlands and beaches, but a network of more than 1,000 springs — which the state suspects may be the largest concentration of springs in the world. Critics fear lax oversight from the state could allow development to encroach on natural areas and pollute waterways that are home to species ranging from manatees to the mullet. “Handing federal oversight of Florida’s wetlands and waterways to the state’s pro-development regulators will speed the bulldozing of the special places that are home to 130 of our most endangered plants and animals,” Jason Totoiu, a senior attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity, said in a statement. “Far too many Florida officials treat our natural areas as playgrounds for developers," he added.

Environmental groups filed suit in federal court Thursday [14 January 2021] to undo a decision by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency last month that handed Florida officials primary regulatory authority over the state’s wetlands.
The groups contend that the decision could further destroy the state’s dwindling inventory of marshes, swamps and other sensitive ecosystems that now account for a fifth of the country’s remaining wetlands.
In their lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., the groups assert that the EPA’s decision last month [December 2020] would allow developers in Florida to get projects fast-tracked by avoiding the federal scrutiny that developments in other states get under a host of federal environmental laws. “EPA is lowering the bar to allow a state, for the first time, to run the federal wetlands program without meeting federal standards,” said Tania Galloni, Earthjustice Managing Attorney for Florida. “Developers have called this the ’holy grail’ because it would make it easier, faster and cheaper for them to get permits for big projects with less oversight and accountability for environmental impacts.” [...]
Florida’s request to gain sole permitting authority was launched under the administration of GOP Gov. Rick Scott, now a U.S. senator [...]. Current Gov. Ron DeSantis, also a Republican, took on that mantle and earlier this year formally petitioned the federal government to transfer that authority. [...] The lawsuit asserts that granting Florida greater authority over wetlands could “threaten to open the floodgates” for other states to seek similar authority. [...]  The announcement by EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler was long sought by developers and Republican allies [...].
