Battlewarmechbots wish everyone to “Have a nice day . . . or else” (Richard Menustik’s mini-poster in Bat-Winged Bimbos from Hell by Greg Porter, final supplement in the satirical Macho Women with Guns RPG trilogy, Blackburg Tactical Research Center, July 1989)  You know, this would be an easy modeling project with some ping pong balls

Why you should try Battletech
If you like Wargames but don’t wanna sell your liver to afford a Warhammer box then I got the game for you. Battletech is a combined arms war game set in a Nobledark setting with a heavy focus on mechs. What are mechs? They are giant walking warmachines. If you like Gundam, Titanfall, Dougram, Macross, than you’d enjoy this setting.
The main appeal to Battletech is that the mechs are treated with semi-realism. Unlike those other franchises things like ammo, weight, heat build up and logistics all play a part. Unlike a game like Warhammer, Battletech is more of a simulator. Your mech can be modified with several variants of the same mech that can change how it’s used drastically. This is tied to your mechs weight class. There are light, medium, heavy and assault. Light mechs don’t have a lot of tonnage but move faster so they’re good as skirmishers or support. Assault mechs carry the most weapons and armor that you could want but are big and slow. There are hundreds of mechs and some of those will have dozens of loadouts and variants.
If this seems like a metagame nightmare, you’d be wrong. Battletech’s immersive approach to mechanics lend itself to having a big focus on roleplaying. This is the game where several mechs are flat out bad and have backstories as money laundering schemes just to make the setting feel more lived in. The Charger is a shitty mech that is fast for an 80 ton Assault mech (so still not that fast) because it’s a stealth scout mech that’s also 30 feet tall.
The setting is also interesting. While not as over the top as 40k’s it’s certainly a fun and wide place to explore. The main setting is the Inner Sphere, a massive region of space extending from Earth that’s dominated by five great houses and their respective nations. They range from aggressive space weebs like the Draconis Combine to United States by way of Yugoslavia that is the Free Worlds League. There’s also Comstar who are like if Verizon became a religion and way too many mercenary companies. If you don’t like space monarchy, you can try the Clans and the Periphery. The clans are like a mix of Red China, Ancient Sparta, Mongol Horde and a dash of bronze age Barbarian. They have 8 foot tall super soldiers with a 50/50 gender ratio and are a freelove society. So a big buff lady can absolutely beat you up lovingly if you want to. The Periphery are space yocals that include Space Texas and what would happen if a bunch of cat girls started a nation based off of Las Vegas.
The number one reason to choose it over Warhammer is that the game has been revitalized with a new line of box sets and a new ttrpg. The box sets are also much more affordable than Warhammer. The beginner box of Battletech is 20 bucks, the core boxset and the Clan Invasion box are 50-60 bucks each. So for the price of one 40k boxset you could get three Battletech boxes. There’s a steady stream of new content and CGL seems to be good about purging chuds on the payrole.
There’s so much more to the franchise but that’s a decent tl;dr

If my time wasted browsing this hellsite has taught me anything, is that people that like mech/mecha stuff are MUCH hornier about big stompy robots than I initially thought

unless i'm misunderstanding something, the only reason the battlemech became the new face of war rather than a technological dead end is because the terran hegemony really liked the idea and forced everyone to play by their rules or get kicked out of the playground

wild to me how Sonic Adventure 2 managed to pretty much nail down the ideal 'mech shape. This, the Catapult from Battletech, Metal Gear Rex, this is the platonic ideal, this is the Big Stompy Robot Vitruvian Man

Knights of Venus
Hello! I've never really been a tumblr girlie, but apparently this is the done thing when making an IF. I'm making a game about squishy humans in big stompy robots on our local hell planet, give it a play here: https://moody.ink/play/belph/knights-of-venus/mygame/ Or read more about it here: https://forum.choiceofgames.com/t/knights-of-venus-14k-word-mech-wip/148371
Asks are open, I'll likely only use this blog for answering those and posting updates.

Blatant advertising, goooooooooo!
HEY! STOP! Whoa. Sorry, I don't mean to intrude, but I can't help but notice that you don't have enough Battletech minis.
Let's fix that! I'm Derek and I'm working in collaberation with Discount Dan to fill your house with miniatures for chump change! I will print minis for you! Rent my resin 3d printer!
Tumblr media
Want a single normal-sized mini? 4 euros plus shipping. Not a bad price, but it really starts to shine when you buy a bunch at once because I'll only charge ya 1 euro for each mini beyond the first in each lot. You can get a whole-ass company for 15 bucks! Your choice of primed or unprimed. Hell, I'll even give the lot a zenithal highlighting if you want. Base included!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Give me .stls, I give you minis. Don't have .stls? Just tell me what mechs you want and in Blake's name, I'll make it happen. Probably. Blake was kind of a dick anyway.
Tumblr media
That's just primed minis though, and you want some paint, yeah? Nice, clean paintjob of your choosing is 14€ on the first, and only 4€ each for rest. A table-ready company printed, painted, based, and sent to your door for 58€ plus shipping. I defy you to find a cheaper price. Want 'em grungy and weathered or clean off the factory floor? Simple bases or more elaborate? I love doing weird environment bases! We can do it all! Want some of my blood in the paint? I would, but I'm pretty sure that's not getting through customs...
Tumblr media
Okay, okay... I see you're a discerning customer. The basic packages aren't enough for you. You want the stuff under the counter. You want the custom machines. No worries, I've got you covered. Our techs can handle everything from adding a simple autocannon or missile pack all the way up to mashing two mechs together into an unholy mess. Twist my arm and I'll give you a record sheet to go along with it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We'll negotiate prices in private.
Don't like stompy robots? That's cool. Into 40K kitbashes?
Tumblr media
Or maybe you wanna make a character or two in HeroForge and pass the .stls to me; guarantee I'll do the printing and painting cheaper than they will even with shipping. Scatter terrain? Just a big pile of mini bases? Decorative add-ons? Tell me what you want and I will make it happen.
Tumblr media
Jump on this quick too, because these chump prices won't last. Message me on this hellsite or discord (theDereckoning) or email at [email protected] and let's make the printer go brrrrrrr for youuuuuuu!

Lets Talk About Battletech
Felt like gushing about the one sci-fi series that I have always nerded out over, so lets talk about big stompy robot and one of the last bastions of the real-robot mecha sub-genre in this cyberpunk world we now live in.
My introduction to Battletech was the Animated series that aired for one season in 1994. It was far from the best cartoon, mostly serving as a meme generator for the current fandom. Exo-Squad was on their second season by that time and had superior animation and story telling but there was something about Battletech that kept me and my friends talking about it. That something was the Battletech universes itself. As flawed as the cartoon was, it did a great job summing up the Inner Sphere in it’s 60 second intro. The show leaves out a lot but if it’s mission was a simple introduction, sampler to the much broader Battletech Universe, mission accomplished.
After the cartoon ended, my buddies found the Battletech novel series at the local book store, that lead us to find the Battletech 3rd edition table top game and in 1995, Activsion published MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat. After that, I was unapologetic Battletech nerd.
What was it that made me fall in love with the game? Allot of little things. The ‘Mechs that took center stage in Battletech had wight, they looked and felt like combat machines. Each Battlemech looks purpose built for war, walking weapon platforms that would crush foes under foot given the chance. The stories themselves are not award winning but most are relatable. Each conflict has petty beginning and costly consequences. Few things are black and white, war itself was the enemy but was also celebrated. Each character had their own self serving motivations rather than some altruistic idea, be it seeking honor and glory or avenging their home planet lost to conflict. It wasn’t ultra-bleak like 40K but it was acknowledging there is little black and white in war, just allot of gray. You are piloting a towering killing machine and winning sometimes means just getting back alive after you run out of ammo, your armor has been shredded and the other mechs are hunting you down.
As with any community built around a war game, you do run into occasional jerks you need to block but I found most of my interaction with fellow Battletech fans to be good ones. Some of my most cherish from my childhood was playing the table top with my school yard friends or talking about that stupid cartoon. Made new friends simple sharing Battletech fan art and still enjoy talking about Battlemechs with my current social group when I can.
Coming full circle; If that stupid, stupid cartoon can teach us anything, don’t be petty. It’s far easier to make enemies than allies and in this world of gray, do the right thing when you can… that and Nicolai Malthus was an ass... sorry Jade Falcon fans but you know why he’s the meme.

Got a bit of a rag tag group of reinforcements for my growing Rasalhague Dominion cluster! About half of these are mechs I actually intend to use in games (as previously mentioned the Horned Owl is a favorite design archetype of mine, the Summoner is about as idiot-proof a heavy cav omni as you can make, and the Piranha is cheap fill with a heinous close-range bite) but the Hellbringer, Huntsman, and Mist Lynx feel a bit more awkward to me. Idk they'll probably take to the table at some point

I’m thinking today about Civilization: Beyond Earth, aka “The Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri from wish dot com”. A spiritual sequel to the beloved SMAC without any of the spirit. The way I see it, Beyond Earth’s gameplay had multiple flaws:
* The starting factions had extremely minimal gameplay influence, which one you picked didn’t really mean anything.
* What resources you started near meant everything. You were planning to go down the Unity part of the tech tree, build big stompy robots? Too bad, there’s no Levistone nearby. You’ll choke down your Xenomass and go Harmony like RNJesus intended. Or you can reroll a new planet and hope for better luck next time … after you spend 10-20 turns finding out what resources you start with this time.
But the major problem with Beyond Earth was that it had big shoes to fill and didn’t really bother to try to fill them.
I mentioned before that the starting factions meant nothing in Beyond Earth? In SMAC they meant everything, because everything was voice acted. Build a recycling vat? Shen-Ji Yang will tell you “it is every citizen’s final duty to go into the tanks …”. Research the Industrial Base tech? Nwabudike Morgan says “Resources exist to be consumed, and consumed they will be!”. The faction leaders were given such depth of character, so well voice acted, that I can still quote them extemporaneously two decades later. SMAC had soul.
Beyond Earth, on the other hand, had one voice actor, a perfectly reasonable AI (human VA playing an AI, it has to be said in these stupid, stupid times) who stripped all the character and emotion from voice quotes attributed to Beyond Earth’s faction leaders. You could not get invested in them as characters - I can’t recall any of their names.
And still, if you win a science victory in Civ 6, you launch the exoplanet expedition, you win the game, and then there is no real sequel unless you want to choke down the bitter Xenomass of disappointment that is Beyond Earth … or return once more to the rolling pink hills and frolicking mindworms of Planet.
There’s space for some sort of near-future xenocolonization 4X game, is what I’m saying. The fallen torch is still there for some game dev to pick up. And I wish they would, instead of continually trying to retread the Civilization story as Old World, Humankind et al have done. Maybe there’s some game out there I’m missing. I hope so.
