#1952 - Hydrangea macrophylla - Mophead

AKA bigleaf hydrangea, French hydrangea, lacecap hydrangea, penny mac and hortensia. That last name (from the Latin hortus, for garden) led to some confusion as regards the French mathematician and astronomer Nicole-Reine Lepaute - naturalist Philibert Commerson had originally intended to name the genus Lepautia or Peautia after her, but when Hortensia became the accepted name people apparently assumed Lepaute’s given name was Hortense.

And either way, the accepted name is Hydrangea now anyway, after the Greek for ‘water vessel’ and the shape of its seed capsules.

Another stupidly popular ornamental in New Zealand, and finds the climate there so much to its liking that it spreads without any help from gardeners. I still suspect, however, that whoever landscaped the area around Lake Mangamahoe when they first put the dam in was going for a cottagecore look, given how many popular ornamentals from British gardens have been left to their own devices there. 

Originally native to Japan, but grown worldwide and naturalised in China, Korea, Siberia, New Zealand and the Americas, and a weed in the Azores and Madeira archipelagos.

This Hydrangea is also famous for the flower colour, which can range from pink to blue, and depends strongly on the pH and amount of aluminium ions in the soil - acid soils with aluminium turns them for blue, alkaline soils with lime turns them more red. Given how many different shades of Hydrangea there were around the lake, soil conditions must be quite diverse.

The bigleaf hydrangea is a deciduous shrub native to Japan, and is known for its lush, oval, colorful inflorescence. The two types of Hydrangea macrophylla are mopheads - with large, ball-shaped, sterile flower clusters, and lacecapes - with small round fertile flowers in the center, and sterile flowers on the outer side of each inflorescence. Depending on soil pH, blooms can change color from pink to blue. When it is not completely blooming, its huge leaves attract massive attention as they grow up to 6 inches in length, which seems to protect its delicate buds. When the hydrangea is fully blossomed, its huge green leaves perfectly capture the beauty of the flower. Its species epithet, macrophylla, also refers to its big or long leaves, which is also why it's called bigleaf hydrangea. The color variation of the bigleaf hydrangea varies with the pH level of the soil. Acidic yields a blue flower, whereas alkaline soil grows a red. Even if you are growing your plants in the same garden, soil pH variations in different areas could give you differently-colored flowers.
