Zhang Qiling's Childhood
Tumblr media
I. Introduction
Zhang Qiling's childhood takes place from around the 1890s to the 1910s. We are not given many dates, but we are given ages and other helpful information. Everything in this post happened before Zhang Qiling reached the age of 13.
This post is based on the novels only and includes MAJOR SPOILERS from the novel Tibetan Sea Flower. Additionally, this post will include information from the novels that were left out/changed in Ultimate Note and Tomb of the Sea.
PLEASE let me know if there are any inaccuracies or if you have any questions. This is the first part of a ZQL timeline, so I want to make it as accurate and non-confusing as possible when I post the whole thing on AO3. Thank you to everyone who helped me with this 🥰
Sources are on the wiki page:
Book Wiki ZQL Page
II. Birth (1890-1911)
Zhang Qiling was born on a sunny day in November. His exact birth year is unknown but based on Sand Sea and Tibetan Sea Flower, he was likely born sometime between 1890 and 1911.[Explanation of how this was calculated]
Zhang Qiling's parents were Bai Ma, a Tibetan doctor, and an unnamed father from the Zhang Family. Zhang Qiling's father met Bai Ma when he went to deliver goods in Nepal. Normally, the Zhang family intermarried to keep their blood pure, but Zhang Qiling was an outlier. His mother was someone from outside of the family.
III. Early Years
A. The 3,000-Year-Old Baby
As a baby, Zhang Qiling's father brought him to the Zhang family during the winter. The Zhangs were a powerful family that controlled historical events over countless dynasties. They have a long life span but bear intolerable side effects as a result.
Around the same time, the Zhang family opened King Zhou Mu's dragon-patterned box and took out a baby that had been sleeping for 3,000 years. This 3,000-year-old baby would have been a sign that perfect immortality—that is immortality without any negative side effects—was achievable. The hope of one day attaining perfect immortality and living free of intolerable side effects was at the core of the family's survival. But the 3,000-year-old baby had died, and perfect immortality was an extravagant hope. The baby was replaced with Zhang Qiling to fool the rest of the family and further the lie of immortality.
Zhang Qiling grew up without knowing his birth parents in the Zhang family's mansion located in the mountainous area of Jinling. At an early age, he was protected like a god and received rigorous training and education. He was also under a great deal of pressure from the family. Zhang Qiling didn’t talk or play with the other children and was generally a very lonely child.
B. The Conspiracy Is Exposed
It’s not known how long the lie about his birth lasted, but eventually the family’s lies and conspiracies were exposed, and as many in the family started rejecting the old social system, they became divided. Zhang Qiling was deemed the main culprit for dividing the family and was regarded as a disgrace by the very same people who had used him to rule it.
C. A Crisis Emerges
The Zhang family's rule soon began to decline and severe civil strife emerged. Two factions of the Zhangs, the main clan system and Fo Ye's family, fought in Sizhou City. As a result of this infighting, the Zhang family patriarch died and the city was flooded. Normally, the patriarch would correctly estimate his time of death and hand the new patriarch a special bronze bell. This bronze bell could not only offset the effect of other bronze bells, but was also the key to accessing a room where the Zhang family kept valuable secrets, including information on the Ultimate. These secrets were the duty and purpose of the family, and because of the patriarch's untimely death, they lost their reason for existing and a crisis emerged.
Conspirators at that time (likely the Wangs) wanted to prevent the Zhang family from finding out the Zhang patriarch was buried with the bell. And since the conspirators controlled the government, they were able to completely seal off the city. However, some in the Zhang family knew what had happened and went looking for the bell in the sealed-off city.
D. Looking for the Bronze Bell in Sizhou City
After Zhang Qiling was adopted by an unknown Zhang man, his adoptive father and that part of the family brought Zhang Qiling into the city to look for the bell. At eight or nine years old, Zhang Qiling was used as a blood bag because of his rare qilin blood. He was also a laborer and entered the narrow spaces that adults couldn’t to find artifacts. It was against the rules to bring such a young child into the field, but like other adopted Zhang children, Zhang Qiling had no one to protect him. The family failed to find the bronze bell and many of them, including Zhang Qiling's adoptive father, died as a result of the infighting while looking for the bell. Zhang Qiling managed to escape and knew that the secrets were still buried in the ancient city.

[PX Fic Rec 101] 张先生
by 孤舟闲行 (guzhouxianxing)
Translated title: Mr. Zhang
Relationship: Zhang Qiling/Wu Xie
Writer's attribute: PingXie||Ping (but this fic is purely PingXie)
Rating: M/R
Status: Incomplete
Language: Chinese
Length: 11 Chapters (On-going)
Tags: Canon Setting—Sha Hai/Sand Sea
What's inside the fic: Third Person POV
Warnings: B*SM, OOC warning is given by the author, it's not finished yet, although there is a possibility that she will continue to write it, it all depends on the feedback. The writer is PingXie||Ping, see the writer's explanation here
Summary:
Zhang Qiling accompanies Wu Xie through the difficult period by controlling his dreams.
Personal opinion:
I was just curious... In my opinion, PingXie is pure love type, something like B*SM feels out of place but somehow I can see the connection. I feel like Wu Xie is too obedient and trust Xiaoge so much to the point of doubting himself. Here and there he likes to praise Xiaoge to be so strong, even in canon. No wonder some people like to call it "dom笔记" (dom Notes) and that's understandable XD Anyway, this fic is interesting, the logic is also good so far. Xiaoge is a gentle S ( ꈍᴗꈍ)
Where to read: Unfortunately, this fic is locked in a private website, so I can't share it here. If you have an access, you can try to read there.

hi! i was wondering what is “PingXie” ? and what does it have to do with mlc?
PingXie 瓶邪 is a cp (couple pairing) ship name for two characters: Zhang Qiling & Wu Xie from the Daomu Biji/Lost Tomb book series & drama/film franchise. The Xie comes from Wu Xie. The Ping comes from Wu Xie’s nickname for Zhang Qiling “Men you píng” 闷油瓶 (very loosely translated means poker face - WuXie is fascinated by his unreadable facial expressions).
Two actors from Mysterious Lotus Casebook have both been in Daomu Biji/Lost Tomb dramas. Actor Zeng ShunXi played Wu Xie in dmbj drama: Ultimate Note.
Tumblr media
And Cheng Yi once played Zhang Qiling in dmbj drama The Lost Tomb 2.

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed, Episode 34
(Masterpost) (Pinboard)
Tumblr media
Warning! Spoilers for All 50 Episodes!
Dog Days
We jump right into some comic relief, in which Wei Wuxian runs away from Fairy, Jin Ling's dog, and Lan Wangji protects him. Wei Wuxian's terror of dogs comes from trauma, like so many features of his personality, but the show takes this opportunity to play it for laughs, with broad comedic acting from both of our leads. This is tonally jarring for me, because I know fuck-all about the very long and deep literary traditions that create the framework of comedy in Chinese drama.  I’m confident that it’s not jarring for its intended audience.
Tumblr media
In any case, I love that CQL and all versions of MDZS constantly leaven the heavy stuff with moments of ridiculousness and whimsey. The mix goes both ways; under the absurdity is often something serious. In this moment, we see that when Wei Wuxian is viscerally afraid, he calls for Lan Wangji to save him, and Lan Wangji immediately does.
Afterwards Wei Wuxian briefly looks at Lan Wangji like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He is SO gone for Lan Wangji.
Then they go to talk to the art seller, to try to get some information about weird things happening in town. He claims to know everything, and tells Wei Wuxian about the man eating bunker on the ridge.
Tumblr media
The seller does not, alas, know all that much, and Wei Wuxian roasts him for being useless while Lan Wangji half-smirks in the background.
Tumblr media
He is so gone for Wei Wuxian.
(more after the cut!)
Wei Wuxian learns about the decline of the Nie clan under its current leader, Nie Huaisang, who has been acting like a dumbass as part of his “not getting murdered” campaign.
Tumblr media
Underneath the Bunker
Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian talk about the new state of things while they walk through the woods to the man-eating crypt. I love the way they walk together here; Lan Wangji perfectly vertical and steady, all Yang in his white robes; Wei Wuxian swaying, sinuous, all Yin in his black ones.
Tumblr media
Fairy barks in the distance and Wei Wuxian freaks out, grabbing Lan Wangji, but he doesn't want to answer when Lan Wangji asks him why.  Lan Wangji doesn't press for an answer, but Wei Wuxian immediately relents and gives him one anyway, and explains about being homeless and fighting with dogs for food when he was a kid.
Tumblr media
From there he jumps to thinking about Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng and how they hate him, and kind of collapses into being bummed out. Lan Wangji doesn't say anything, but listens and lets Wei Wuxian have a moment to get back into a better headspace.
Tumblr media
This is a new dynamic for them; normally Wei Wuxian doesn't let his guard down enough to talk about his difficulties, and previously Lan Wangji didn't miss an opportunity to try to tell Wei Wuxian what to do.
More barking and grabby hands ensue, with Wei Wuxian clinging to Lan Wangji an unreasonable amount, and Lan Wangji rolling with it because being grabbed by Wei Wuxian is his favorite thing, even better than catching Wei Ying when he faints.
Tumblr media
At least, it's his favorite thing right now because they haven't progressed to blow jobs yet.
Tumblr media
Blow jobs, you say...
They find the crypt, which is full of resentful energy and bad skeleton props.
Wei Wuxian, in his new life, has retained his ability to hear resentful spirits yelling in his head. That's awesome for him and for Lan Wangji, who super missed getting to be paralyzed with fear for his beloved.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian pulls out his compass of evil, which Lan Wangji apparently kept and has given back to him. As if you need a compass to find evil in this joint.
Tumblr media
Surprise! It's in the room with all the coffins! (Wu Xie, poking his head in from Daomu Biji: Let's open them, what could go wrong?)
They open up the coffins and find blades in all of them, so Lan Wangji goes to play Inquiry to see what's up. We learn more about inquiry as Lan Wangji tries to get an answer from whatever spirit is in the place.
Tumblr media
He also takes an opportunity to be amusingly literal with Wei Wuxian, in a possible callback to that time when Wei Wuxian introduced him to Suibian. He earns praise and some obvious elevator eyes as a reward for his joke.
Tumblr media
Unlike that time in the ice cave, Lan Wangji doesn’t mind a bit when Wei Wuxian hops up to sit next to the guqin while he plays it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And for this, he is rewarded with Wei Wuxian’s undivided attention. See, Lan Wangji? Letting neuroatypical kids sit the way they want enhances their learning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We discover that Lan Wangji is, unsurprisingly, a mensch when it comes to inquiry; he says the spirit can't lie because “I am here.”
They figure out that the spirit is Jin Ling who is...not dead? Inquiry apparently works on living beings as well? Eh, whatever.
For The Love Of God, Montresor
They follow the instructions from Inquiry to find Jin Ling and dig him out of the wall.
Tumblr media
Camera Operator: What did I ever do to you?
This wall doesn't have any mortar in it, which is good since it needs to be easy for people to bury themselves in it. After Jin Ling got sucked into the wall, did he put the stones back?
Tumblr media
Anyway, 1500 years ago, folks in China developed a strong mortar by mixing slaked limestone with sticky rice soup. The Nie clan can't be bothered with that, though.
Apparently being buried and deprived of oxygen for a super long time doesn't kill you if you're a cultivator, given that Jin Ling has been in this wall for quite a while.
Here we get another look at older, warmer Lan Wangji, who is a natural caretaker, kind to young people, and doesn't object to touching people, at least not if they need help or are in some way related to Wei Wuxian.
Tumblr media
He pulls Jin Ling into his lap immediately and starts feeding him spiritual energy while Wei Wuxian casually grabs Bichen and uses its hilt to dig out more of the wall. If this seems like a disrespectful way to treat Bichen, never, ever read the extra chapters of the novel.  Lan Wangji doesn’t blink at Wei Wuxian borrowing his sword.
Tumblr media
While Wei Wuxian takes a minute to try to understand what he's feeling in the weird energies of the place, Jin Ling hops up and tries to stick himself back into the wall. Persistent little guy. They haul Jin Ling out of there and see that Nie Huaisang a mysterious someone is lurking outside.
Lan Wangji is super reluctant to leave Wei Wuxian's side, hesitating until Wei Wuxian emphatically says he will meet him in town.
Tumblr media
Then he goes to chase Nie Huaisang the mysterious intruder, who easily escapes from world’s greatest cultivator Hanguang-Jun, which is...not plausible.
Cursed Reunion
Back at the Inn, Jin Ling wakes up while Wei Wuxian is checking his chest for signs of a curse, and flips out because Mo Xuanyu is taking off his clothes and (unbeknownst to Wei Wuxian) has a reputation as a sex pest.
Tumblr media
Jin Ling goes running off while Wei Wuxian is distracted by a flashback of Jiang Yanli. Wei Wuxian follows him, only to run into Fairy and Jiang Cheng. This time, Lan Wangji isn't there to help out, because he's busy filming Day Day Up gazing at the moon and thinking about Wei Wuxian.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng makes Wei Wuxian remove his mask, and the reunion gets rolling. The music cue for this is the extra sad, falling-off-cliffs music.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng decides to torment Wei Wuxian with Fairy while they yell at each other, and this time Wei Wuxian’s fear is not played for laughs.
Tumblr media
This Wei Wuxian to have a flashback to a time he was chased by an adorable friendly dog a scary dog, and rescued by Jiang Yanli. He calls out "Shijie" and Jiang Cheng gets even more pissed off.
Tumblr media
He starts to talk a little smack about Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian instantly claps back, and it just escalates form there.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng has plenty of valid reasons to be angry; Wei Wuxian's loss of control did lead to Jin Zixuan's death and to a lot of the shitshow at Nightless City. It doesn't matter that there was a second flute; if I'm in charge of the firewall and I don't actually have a firewall, it's my fault if hackers take over my company servers and/or fierce corpses.
But he is apparently mad that Wei Wuxian didn't come to Lotus Pier immediately upon returning from death.
Tumblr media
You know, the death that Jiang Cheng kind of directly caused. Not to be confused with the death Jiang Cheng has been dishing out to random demonic cultivators since then, and encouraging Jin Ling to dish out. He's got a hell of a nerve to expect Wei Wuxian to voluntarily come anywhere near him.
On the flip side, when Jiang Cheng, reasonably, wants to know where Wen Ning is, Wei Wuxian stupidly wonders why Jiang Cheng still hates Wen Ning. Wei Wuxian asks what more he wants from them, both of them having died already. Like, if you do a clean reboot, everything should be good, right?
But Jiang Cheng wanted to kill Wen Ning even before the whole spine-crushing incident, so there's no reason he should have changed his plan in the intervening years. Wei Wuxian tries to get him to think about why Wen Ning isn't dead, but Jiang Cheng is too angry.
Tumblr media
Jin Ling shows up to tell him he thinks he knows where Wen Ning is, which is just bullshit to lure Jiang Cheng. He tells him that he didn't say anything earlier because Jiang Cheng was being too much of a bitch. Jiang Cheng bristles and Wei Wuxian gives Jin Ling the sweetest, most loving look.
Tumblr media
He’s already starting to adore Jin Ling, with all his flaws, in the same way he adored a younger Jiang Cheng with all of *his* flaws.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng ties Wei Wuxian up with Zidian and cleverly puts his rebellious teenager in charge of watching his silver-tongued brother.
Tumblr media
Jin Ling, comfortable with command, at least where Jiang disciples are concerned, tells all the guards to fuck off.  He calls Zidian to his hand, which speaks to the closeness of his relationship with his Jiujiu. Jiang Cheng certainly couldn't wield Zidian while his Mom was still around. Then Jin Ling takes Wei Wuxian out of town again to let him go.
Let’s Dip
Tumblr media
I like their synchronized sneaking; it makes me want to see them have more adventures together.
Out in the woods, Wei Wuxian, who once named a sword "Whatever," roasts Jin Ling for his dog-naming methods. They talk about Jiang Cheng's obsession with catching Wei Wuxian, which makes him think everyone is Wei Wuxian. Which in turn makes Jin Ling think that the dude in front of him is not actually Wei Wuxian.
Then Wei Wuxian talks to Jin Ling about the importance of learning to say thank you and sorry.
Tumblr media
He follows this up by saying sorry for his comments at Dafan mountain. Jin Ling reacts like nobody has ever sincerely apologized to him in his life, which is very possible, considering that Jiang Cheng is not exactly the apologizing type, and everything Jin Guangyao says is insincere.
Tumblr media
Jin Ling talks about his ambitions and Wei Wuxian nods approvingly, which is sweet, but he follows it up by knocking Jin Ling out so he can take care of the curse on his leg. This family, man. So rough. Wei Wuxian takes care of the curse, predictably, by transferring it to his own body. I'm sure Lan Wangji won't be upset about that.
Soundtrack: Underneath the Bunker by R.E.M
Writing Prompt: Jiang Cheng trying to apologize for anything, to anyone, and making an utter hash of it.

I don't know if anyone has made this post or this analysis yet, but Resident Evil Village is a story about love. Not necessarily a love story so to speak, but the key theme and central tenant of the story is about love. Be it familial love, idolizing love, love for humanity or community as a whole. That is the key theme of this story and each and every character is shaped by love as a concept. (Does contain spoilers for RE7 and RE Village)
Lady Alcina Dimetrescu's character is shaped by her love of her daughters. Through the gift of the Cadoau Lady D. has been given the ability to live much beyond what would be normally capable. When given the chance to experiment on three of her maids and they turned into flies and insects, she took them in and loved them as if they were her own daughters. We see Lady D. break down and get enraged at the loss of her daughters to Ethan.
While Donna Beneviento is a bit harder to pin down in terms of how love plays into her story and character, she is more than willing to use the love that Ethan has for Mia and Rosemary to manipulate, misguide and terrify Ethan. Exposing the unwanted truth and opening the secret that Mia is hiding a dark secret from Ethan that he doesn't know about. However the manipulation doesn't break Ethan and his own resolve prevails.
Salvatore Moreau is blinded by his love of Mother Miranda. Basically seeing her as his own mother. Doing anything she says up to the point he allows his own Cadoau parasite to take heavy control over his physicality to the point it's hard to even consider Moreau a human anymore. Blindly following her every word to experimenting on villagers and creating the Lycans to forcing himself to mutate time and time again.
Karl Heisenberg subverts the trope because he has no real love for Miranda. He understands that he's nothing more than a tool to her. Instead he chooses to devote his love for a chance for freedom. A possibility to end this cycle that Miranda has been perpetuating for almost, if not more than a century at this point. It's this love of himself and his dream to finally be free that eventually acts as his demise. As he was willing to sacrifice anything and anyone to be free.
Mia Winters in many ways is one of the true villains of this story. Yet as much as she has a hand in the blame, she is paralyzed by her fear. Mia genuinely loves Ethan and Rosemary and doesn't want to lose them. Mia hides the fact that she knows Ethan is just a collection of mold that reanimated Ethan and took his personality, not because she knows the hazard and power he holds, but because for all that she knows despite Ethan for all intents and purposes being dead. This is very much the same Ethan she fell in love with, the same Ethan who rescued her from the Baker Mansion back in Louisiana. The same Ethan who didn't give up on her. Mia had no idea what would have happened if she told Ethan the truth. Would he have left her? Would he have taken Rose? Would Ethan's psyche have become so fractured and so damaged that the mold would have caused him to mutate? Mia had no idea and honestly I don't blame her for trying to hide her knowledge of it to Ethan and Chris as long as she did. Yet it was her inaction that caused the whole series of unfortunate events in Village to transpire.
Chris Redfield has been fighting Umbrella, Bio-Terrorism, hordes of infected and undead for more than half of his life at this point. In that time Chris has lost so many people and has experienced so much pain. He watched almost his whole police unit die in the Arklay Mansion. He's witnessed unspeakable horrors all because of greedy and omnicidal individuals committing unspeakable atrocities against humanity out of corporate greed, ravenous power-hunger, or complete sociopathic desires to force evolution upon the world or to even end it. Chris watched Jill sacrifice her own life to save him (thankfully she didn't actually die.) Chris watched as Merah Biji sacrificed herself to save him and Piers. Chris watched as Piers forced himself to take a highly mutagenic strain of the C-Virus and mutate himself all so he could save Chris. Chris has seen so many innocent people die in the past two decades and the one time he has a chance to make it right with the Winters's that fails as well. Chris keeps Ethan in the dark because Chris believes that would be what's best to keep Ethan safe. Only to have it completely backfire and Chris watches as Ethan has his heart torn out of his body by Mother Miranda. Chris is pulling a heavily infected and basically falling-apart Ethan only for Ethan's final dying wish to have Chris look after his family as Ethan decides to kill himself and destroy the Megamycete. When Chris is forced to tell Mia that Ethan sacrificed himself to stay behind and finish the job, we finally see Chris Redfield, The Chris Redfield, that boulder-punching asshole finally cry and break down. Despite seeing the absolute very worst of humanity, Chris still chooses to keep fighting and keep living. That in itself is one powerful act of both defiance and love.
Mother Miranda is the progenitor of the entire franchise. Every single atrocity caused by Umbrella, every viral outbreak, every innocent life so mindlessly taken and either turned into a shambling, walking corpse or forcibly mutated into horrific biological nonsense all falls back to her. She was the one who inspired Oswell E. Spencer to research and look for the means to create immortality. Spencer created Umbrella because of Mother Miranda. Yet Mother Miranda only wanted one thing. To resurrect her daughter who died during the Spanish Influenza outbreak after World War I. When Eva, Miranda's daughter died. Miranda was in such abject anguish and mourning she wandered off to the caves surrounding the Village as a means to end her own life. She could not live without her daughter and the hole in her heart caused by her passing was so great that she had resigned to giving up and dying in the cold of exposure just so she could see her daughter again. That's where Miranda happened upon the Megamycete and became infected with The Mold. Finding out that the Megamycete catalogued and stored the consciousness of all those that died in the vicinity of its roots. Miranda became obsessed with the ability to potentially bring her daughter back from the dead. Directly causing hundreds if not thousands of deaths over at least a century of torture, maiming and mutating. And indirectly led to deaths of millions of people through those she inspired. Miranda is so blinded by her love for her daughter and is so devastated by her loss that she allows herself to commit atrocities for upwards of a century.
And then we finally have Ethan Winters. The man who went through hell twice for the ones he loved. Both his wife and daughter. Ethan isn't a superhero, nor is he some zombie-apocolyse survivor. He's just an average engineer from California in his late 30's. While Village is very much about how Miranda is so corrupted and so wicked after a century of abject unadulterated grief. It also is the story of Ethan's unwavering love for his family. This man literally is killed in the events of Resident Evil 7 and when resurrected by the mold he has the strength of his love for his wife get him past about every obstacle and mind control he faces. This continues in Village. When Ethan finds out the truth that he's been dead for 3 years at this point and is basically a molded zombie, he rejects this notion and retains his form just long enough to kill Miranda and save his daughter. Ethan goes from a scared, shaking, crying survivor to a literal doom slayer over the prospect of saving his daughter. The love Ethan has for his own family is so great it overpowered Eveline and even the Megamycete when Ethan himself was just a creation of both at that point. We don't get to see Ethan in third-person (well not until October tehe) so we don't really have an idea of what's going on with Ethan but The Duke mentions after gathering Ethan's body from Miranda that when he wakes up, Ethan is basically falling apart physically. Imagine black tarry tears oozing from his eyes. His pulsating innards oozing a black, viscous fluid, synonymous with advanced mold infections, but Ethan doesn't care. The only thing he feels is anger and love for his family. The mold is on its last legs and it wants so desperately to mutate Ethan into a monstrosity to better defend itself, but Ethan is just so powerful in his resolve to save his loved ones that it forces him to keep his original form. A father's love for his daughter is able to overpower an apocalyptic strain of mutagenic mold and a century-old threat hell-bent on destroying the world just so she could see her daughter again.
And that is why Resident Evil Village is a story about love.

Been going through all the bts posted on weibo and these two are too adorable for words😍
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve been thinking about this movie and whether my bias for Ji Xiao Bing - he’s very talented but underrated IMO - is the reason why I consider him the best onscreen Xie Yu Chen to date. I’ve followed the Daomu Biji novels for a while now and have had problems with every single one of the drama adaptations. There are things that I love about them but then they also have additional stuff that irks me. And whenever they release a new one, I go through the same cycle of eager anticipation to frustration with the final product.
I’ve also not been completely satisfied with the portrayals of Xie Yu Chen… that is, until this movie. The biggest issues that I have are usually that they only focus on one aspect of Xie Yu Chen or that he is somewhat emasculated either physically, mentally or both. Xie Yu Chen isn’t like Wu Xie, who only developed a certain level of ruthlessness in his late 30s to take down the Wang clan in Sha Hai. He went through a crucible at 8 years of age. He lost his father and uncles to what seemed like a curse. One can only imagine what he has done, even if unwillingly, and the kind of pressures he has faced to assume and maintain his position as head of the Xie clan. The author himself has described him as a very formidable person with a strong propensity to protect Wu Xie when he sees the latter going through what he experienced when he was a child. So whenever I see a portrayal that makes him seem weak, naïve or engage in childish bickering, I automatically tune out.
Ji Xiao Bing’s Xie Yu Chen, however: - is very serious but not arrogant and cares deeply about the people he considers his friends, - is ruthless and intelligent in the way he makes use of Wei to find the parasites and wasn’t actually going to pay him so easily since he already suspected that Wei wanted his funds for another purpose, - is a powerful fighter in his own right without needing to be saved all the time.
Also, his performance gave Xie Yu Chen a dominant air about him. Ji Xiao Bing can really exude 霸气 without having to resort to smirking or looking smug. This is a character who I can believe successfully fought against all odds to take control of a clan. And this is how I imagined Xiao Hua would be when I read the novels. In hindsight, I'm not as frustrated with this movie probably because it isn't based on any novel and it brings to life the relationship between these two beloved characters so well.
Of course, I can't forget Ji Chen's Hei Xiazi. I loved his portrayal of Xiazi in the Sha Hai drama and it has remained my favorite. He plays the character to perfection and I'm happy he got to reprise the role twice now. I really need that Hua Ye Qian Xing drama to happen with these two actors.

ooh!! have you read any more danmei or even just wuxia works? if so may i be so bold as to ask you for little rec crumbs for i am just a starving little pigeon eager for any more content pls T.T
even outside of mxtx there really is quite a limit to how far you can venture out to danmei or even just the wuxia world in general :( we have priest and meatbun whose content has started to be more accessable thankfully but outside of that, unless you can read mandarin it's gonna be a little difficult to find something new
okay it’s not wuxia and it’s not danmei either but daomu biji (the grave robber’s chronicles) is a really, REALLY fascinating book series that has been adapted into the lost tomb series of shows/movies and i. i really do love that series so much. i started with the sound of the providence after watching guardian (zhu yilong plays wu xie, i personally love him and i’m not like 100% in disgust at his interpretation but the show itself is… well… not the best adaptation in the lineup), but there’s sooooo much content and i think a tencent donghua if you have access to those. i believe the book series does have an official translation but don’t quote me on it, and that iqiyi and viki together have all the shows and movies (time raiders is free on youtube, it’s complete nonsense but it’s also just so much fun)
like i said, it’s not danmei but the major pairing in fanon is pingxie, ie. main character and disaster darling wu xie + ageless stoic supernatural and occasionally amnesiac badass zhang qiling aka xiao-ge (idk how to explain xiao-ge, he really is just… he’s really inexplicable to me). it’s not canon but they definitely have a canonical “he is my north star/my anchor to this earth” sorta deal and regardless of how you choose to interpret that, it’s a really sweet and really intimate relationship and the iron triangle dynamic in general is just wonderful. the last interview i saw with the author of the novels and some of the actors were all so so respectful of the fans that headcanon the iron triangle in various romantic/platonic configurations, which i personally found to be rare in ANY context and really just. really admirable and wonderful.
and of course for danmei that i personally can recommend, there’s priest’s zhen hun, which was adapted into the really really weird and just horrendously cgi’d but simultaneously agonising and heartbreaking guardian. it’s a modern supernatural/magical realism detective novel + love story between an immensely powerful ghost and a human detective (to sum up the novel really really poorly and broadly). i read this several years ago now so i’m looking forward to returning to it and maybe understanding it a little better
to be 100% honest, i only recently got back into danmei because of scum villain, so im also on the hunt for recs in the danmei and xianxia/wuxia genres! access has historically been an issue for me, which is why i’m so grateful now for the official releases. but i do deeply appreciate the opportunity to suggest dmbj, because i really did thoroughly enjoy that series
however i’ve heard some pretty good things about word of honor, which i believe is based off of tian ye ke/faraway wanderers by priest. little mushroom has a first volume english translation on am*zon that i haven’t yet read but am planning to in the new year. but you’re right in that access is a little difficult to find for more “indie” authors and novels. hopefully that changes in the coming years though!

18 and 20 for the love the fandom ask game :)
18: A fandom tag that you track. I'm going to be tragically predictable on this one - usually it's just the main "dmbj/daomu biji" tag, and then periodically the "liu sang" and "xie yuchen/xiao hua" tags just in case I've missed some blorbo content (I never have, but a girl can dream).
20. I already answered my very first fandom (Keeping Up Appearances) in another reply, so how about my second fandom, and my first more fandom-y fandom? It was for a VERY short-lived 1998 ABC show called "Prey", and led to, among other things baby's first network appeal campaign (didn't get it un-cancelled, but DID at least get the remaining episodes actually broadcast after being canned halfway through, which was a pretty good achievement!) and baby's first sci-fi convention. This was again a fandom where I was incredibly lucky to fall in with a lot of older, experienced fans who made it a very welcoming and healthy environment - I've lost touch with all of them and wouldn't even know how to begin to find them, but they were great.
The ask game is here is anyone wants to play!

Rin Reviews: Reunion- The Sound of the Providence (重启之极海听雷)
Howdy everyone!
Tumblr media
So, I just finished Reunion (otherwise known as Reboot), and I am here to offer my opinions about it.
Reunion centers around the Graverobbers’ Chronicles (盗墓笔记, Daomu Biji, DMBJ) universe and stars Zhu Yilong as Wu Xie, Chen Minghao as Wang Pangzi, and Huang Junjie as Zhang Qiling (Xiaoge).
In a nutshell, the storyline centers around Wu Xie discovering that he has a terminal lung illness. At around the same time, he receives a text from his missing third uncle, Wu Sanxing and together with Pangzi and Xiaoge starts on a journey to find Wu Sanxing, who is likely in a place called Thunder City, while Wu Xie’s time runs out.
I will be reviewing on:
Storyline Characters Overall Watchability
Each will be out of five Deadly Handcrabs and the show will get a total score.
Without further ado, let’s get into it!
Storyline
The storyline as a whole I think is engaging, despite how this show is meant as a sequel to The Lost Tomb. As a watcher, I was immediately engaged from the start, with the urgency of Wu Xie’s mission to find Wu Sanxing. Overall, I think despite the kookiness of some of the plot inventions, (i.e. thunder listening devices, sentient mannequins, deadly handcrabs and so forth) it does make sense in general, with the exception of the final villain’s identity.  One of the only gripes I have is the use of Xiaoge as a deus ex machina plot mechanism. There are many situations in which he is not present, doing something else, and the characters become embroiled in some deadly situation, herein Xiaoge appears to save the day. A more engaging use of his character would have been to have him present for such situations already while figuring out what to do with the rest of the Iron Triangle (Wu Xie and Pangzi).
The other gripe I have is the death of a woman very important to the main characters, which I believe was completely unwarranted and unnecessary.
4/5 Deadly Handcrabs
Characters
I personally believe that Reboot is a good intro to the the key characters of DMBJ, particularly the three leads. Wu Xie, Pangzi and Xiaoge are endearing each in their own way, with quirks that serve the group’s purpose individually. Wu Xie’s talent lies in his intelligence and ability to make plans and solve impossible problems. Pangzi is the heart and glue of the group, with his sense of humor, bright smile, and determination to stick by Wu Xie and Xiaoge more than anything. Xiaoge is the experienced immortal with wild physical abilities and a poker face to rival stone (he is adorable when Pangzi and Wu Xie make him smile, though). I really began to understand their strong bond and enjoy them as characters.
There were also Hei Xiazi, played by Baron Chen and Xie Yuchen (Xiao Hua), played by Qiao Zhenyu. I found myself also charmed by these two, particularly Hei Xiazi, who is full of wit, and as it turns out, loyalty to his friends. Xiao Hua, being a practical and intelligent man, was also very charming in the brief scenes where he was present. I would have liked to see more of them together.
In general, the cast was interesting and amusing, with the exception of a couple of antagonists.
4.5/5 Deadly Handcrabs
Overall Watchability
This is the part I have the most issues with. While the storyline and premise as a whole was quite interesting, the pacing of the show was horrendous. There were too many unnecessary scenes, particularly where it has to do with walking around.
Specifically, I am of firm belief that the Warehouse Eleven arc could have been drastically cut down. It was not only a remarkably boring environment with terrible lighting, the wackiness of the rules could have been established for the viewer in far less scenes. Overall, this part of the show was absolutely excruciating, enough that I questioned my willingness to get through the rest. And I would have stopped if it hadn’t been for my motivation to see some of the other characters who were not present. It was genuinely awful and slowed down my pace way too much, enough that it took me about a year to finish both seasons of the show. It was often difficult to watch even while eating some tasty snacks and playing it at 2x speed, so that should tell you how bad that was.
Without so many walking scenes and exposition scenes, I am really quite sure that the show could have been condensed into an entertaining one season show.
I also have a complaint about the complete disregard to reality that was a hallmark of my experience watching the show. Written into the show are several completely impossible scenes that seem to almost mock the intelligence of the viewers at times. One example would be a scene where Wu Xie is suffering an emergency due to his condition and Pangzi takes him to an acquaintance, Huo Daofu, who is selling breadsticks at the time, but is a doctor. Huo Daofu prescribes a treatment which consists of washing out Wu Xie’s lungs with oil. Not only is this something that would *kill* Wu Xie, it is carried out in the most unsafe way. This, along with Wu Xie being struck by lightning and suffering no ill effect are some of the most egregious faults in the show. While some things in the show are kooky, I really believe these are two things the show could have done without, pushing a step too far past the acceptable suspension of disbelief.
In regards to watchability, I have only one quote, “It was so bad, I want to give you a zero, but that's not possible, so I give you a one.”
1/5 Deadly Handcrabs
Final Thoughts and Total Score
As my first foray into Daomu Biji, I was in general, amused by the show. I have grown attached to the characters and may continue to foray deeper into the universe. The ending of Reunion in particular, with a collection of scenes of love and friendship, was very satisfying and heartwarming to me after the journey was completed with this motley cast of characters. However, I would not watch the entirety of the show again. Once was enough for me. Who knows. I may eventually pick through to find some of my favourite scenes (to do with the Iron Triangle or Hei Xiazi), but I don’t think I’ll require an entire rewatch to enjoy those.
For now, the South Sea kingdom journey ends, and I wish these charming folks a very Fun Tombraiding Adventure.
Final Score: 3/5 Deadly Handcrabs

Let's talk about PingXie 瓶邪 ! ✨
The content of this section is miscellaneous things and some thoughts about PingXie that I want to share with you. On a side note, I haven't been in this fandom for a long time, and maybe my knowledge is just a tip of an iceberg, so feel free to tell me if there is any misinformation.
Thanks to my friend, 小粉蛇 (PinkSnake), she is a PingXie shipper from China, she helped me a lot in this and explained to me about the things I don't understand in PingXie Chinese fandom. Thank you so much! (◍•ᴗ•◍)❤
Some posts in this section may contain personal thoughts that people would agree or disagree. Don't worry, I will put a warning beforehand. If you disagree with me, you can just ignore me, let's maintain a peaceful place in this fandom ^^
Let's Talk About PingXie: Part 1
PingXie in Chinese Fandom
Let's talk about the general knowledge first. In China, Daomu Biji 《盗墓笔记》 is very well known and PingXie 《瓶邪》 is the most popular couple (cp) in this series. PingXie has been very popular for almost 20 years since Daomu Biji were serialized in 2006, and regarded as the first two-dimensional national couple 《国民cp》 there. So, don't be afraid of being starved, there is always some food to eat.
The name PingXie comes from “闷油瓶” (which is Wu Xie's exclusive nickname for Zhang Qiling) and “吴邪”, so PingXie is “瓶邪”. In Chinese, the word "瓶邪" can be divided into four radical characters, "并", "瓦", "牙", "耳", which can be interpreted as "sitting together under the roof and whispering into the ear" 《瓦下并坐耳鬓厮磨》 That words represent very beautiful and warm meaning of love in Chinese (*˘︶˘*).。*♡
PingXie shippers have a nickname called “世界姐” (tl: World Sister) because PingXie has so many shippers and widely known everywhere. Some say it's because PingXie is too powerful, when PingXie shippers got scolded for playing cp (自萌) in the world or spreading outside their circle, then they just circled the world. As a result, PingXie's circle is the world or “圈世界自萌” and PingXie's nickname is “世界” (tl: the world). So, PingXie shippers is “世界姐” (tl: World Sister) or “世界哥” (tl: World Brother). It's interesting, isn't? >.<
Have you seen this remark “瓶邪80全世界”? The last time I saw it was when the official wedding rings merchandise of Zhang Qiling and Wu Xie are announced to be released few weeks ago, on August 17.

It reminds me of the D*rex incident here haha.
Back to “瓶邪80全世界”, it means Zhang Qiling and Wu Xie cp fans bully the world ("the world" here is general meaning). It is not "bully" in a bad way, "bully" here means that PingXie is the most popular and representative couple of China, you know the national cp. The number "80" or "eight" and "zero" in Chinese is "八" and "零" or "八零 (bā líng)" which is a homophone for "霸凌" (bullying). Once again, PingXie proves that even though it's a cp from many years ago, it's still so popular.
My friend also said that the most popular cp is often called "美帝" in China, short for "美帝国主义", but it is just a metaphor for a dictatorship/absolute ship in fandoms. Just like a superior status among the cp(s). Sometimes you may find “瓶邪二十年美帝”, but unlike "the first two-dimensional national cp" which is the only one and an established title, "美帝" can refer to any other powerful cp.
