Hi, random question! I've been reading lots of your old meta posts and at some point you mentioned that you think perth nakhun specifically really understands the global queer markets and I was wondering what you meant by that?

Hum, well I used to follow his YT channel pretty regularly, he's Australian/Thai, and I think grew up in one of the larger Aussie cities, which means he will have at at least Pride exposure. Also, he's a big fan of Japanese manga and a gamer geek. He's pretty game in the My Engineer bts, talking openly about his own childhood experimenting with gender and such. All things combined plus the way he talks in interviews, how he translates things at fan meets and so forth, make me think he's pretty savvy about global queer culture in a way those actors born and raised in Thailand and never having travelled out of it probubly aren't as much. Same with Pavel.

I think growing up in a mixed culture household, multilingual, and/or traveling/living abroad, gives humans a certain amount of brain flexibility around all things socio-cultural, including ideas around heteronormativity.

If I had my druthers, instead of higher education all kids would have the option to live and work in a place that did not speak their native tongue for 2+ years. I think it's a much more effective/necessary education. But ya know, that's coming from a supreme place of privilege and I am not yet ruler of the planet.

i didnt realise there are ppl saying marinette's lack of proficiency in chinese is unrealistic?? im also in that situation with chinese dialects as well, my parents didnt teach me the dialects that they speak while growing up. i dont understand a single thing spoken by my relatives unless my parents translate it for me

i saw a post in the tag KFKSKDKS it had like 35 notes and i was like um yeahhhhh this is so weird and also ive seen takes like that in general on random social media sites before i guess adrienette’s mandarin lesson in action stirred animosity again frjsnsnsndndn like i learnt chinese in school bc it was part of our education system but my parents deliberately spoke to me in english most of the time to give me a competitive edge because english was the language of instruction in school and english is a compulsory first language for people who are born here. and they definitely didnt bother teaching me any dialects lmao. AND my society is 70% chinese people. IM NOT EVEN A MINORITY OF MY RACE AND I COULD’VE EASILY SUCKED AT CHINESE. there are people here who do. it just happens sometimes w biligualism. not everyone is meant to be good at multiple languages, sometimes people lose touch w their native language, blah blah blah. and i kind of get annoyed when white people are mad that marinette isn’t ‘chinese’ enough for them. like there are so many ways to represent people of chinese heritage. it would be fun if she were fluent in mandarin or some other chinese dialect! but she’s not. and that’s not a moral failing

So I don't know if you already answered this or talked about it, but I'm curious. I'm Brazilian which make me latina like you ( although we kinda don't consider ourselves to be latino due to our culture be so diverse and from lots of differents countries which make difficult to relate to other latino countries) I want to know what your thoughts about the way the show portraits Mexican/ latino people. Do you like it, do you think they do a good job or no?

If not comfortable talking about it I'll totally understand!

Honestly I've talked about this multiple times with @cassiemartzz

And yes, I avidly hate how they represent latino people. I guess there's not enough time to actually show the virtues or variety of our cultures while the main focus is a serial killer, granted, but not even in casting do they do a good job.

There're plenty of biligual actors that speak spanish/portuguese natively that "look" latino and they decide to hire the most "no bueno" accents ever. Like, machismo is one of the episodes that make me cringe the most.

Now, a good point is that they try to highlight the cultural differences and how profiling and other american techniques are not meant to work to the T because of them, which I think it''s something important to note, but always under a light of "that's why they are way worse off".

At the end of the day, although I really dislike the representation, I've thought multiple times that I cannot ask a fish to fly. It's a fictional FBI show, and of course most race/ethnicy related topics are always seen through the lense of american writers, and even if they included latino-americans, they still don't know the real dynamics (judicial and social) that we live in our countries. It's just different, even if you understand the culture, the social dynamics are not the same as they are in the united states.

So I decided to give up and yes, hate, but also, I can't expect the T.V. to educate people.

Some cute scenes that deserve recognition though are the Día de Muertos scene with Garcia (Día de muertos is almost too different from state to state here in mexico, but they kind of made it the standard of the holiday), and the fact that Adam Rodríguez actually has a good spanish, and that he went "Lady, I'm from the Bronx, we can do this in español if you want but it's going to take longer"

I was just listening to a cover and I was thinking "it's translating it almost immediately in my head, how nice, but I would rather listen to it on english" then I tried finding the words in english...and that's when I realized...ITS FUCKING SPANISH.
