TW: internalized homophobia, manipulation, panic attacks and mileven making out (sorry y'all, it's for the plot and this the last chapter they'll do it. I pinky promise 😔 we'll get onto the Henderhop the next chapter 😀).
Also the whole diary thing in this chapter I've ripped off of the actual HP lore. 🥲 I also ripped off the whole byler fight from the s3 fight. 😞😞😞
Will was not especially happy to board on the Hogwarts Express unlike his future sister, El, who was bouncing up and down with excitement. Will had gotten to know her over the summer and despite his initial jealousy, he liked her a lot. She was sweet and caring with shoulder-length brown hair and big eyes.
Will really couldn't blame her for being so joyful, she was dating Mike after all, the most loving and perfect human-being ever and as her brother, he was happy for her. Yet, whenever he saw them together or heard them talk over the phone, his guts burnt with jealousy. El was a constant reminder of how Mike would never be his to love.
Normally sitting in a compartment with his friends would make Will happy but lately being with them made him feel alone.
Thus, the train ride had been, in Will's humble opinion, absolutely miserable. With Mike and El, in the seat next to him, not being able to stop kissing for 5 fucking minutes and Mike constantly shoving Will against the window to make room for their gross make-out session. To make matters worse, in the seat in front of him, Max and Lucas were loudly arguing but every 7 insults, they'd began to make-out sloppily.
It was as if both couples were in an intense competition of who could gross Will out more. Mike and El were clearly winning because at least Lucas and Max kiss lovingly while Mike and El just, ew.
Will was growing bored and he he'd brought his wizards chess set on board since it was one of his favorite games. Mike loved it too, and so maybe he wanted to play. Will remembered fondly how the both of them used to play it in Mike's basement. Secretly, Mike's basement felt more like home to Will than the house in which he lived. Since in Mike's basement he felt safe and mostly, loved.
So Will tapped Mike's shoulder in a poor attempt to draw his attention away from El. He was met with Mike huffing annoyed.
"Mike, do you wanna play wizards chess?" Will offered with a small smile.
"But now's not the time" complained Mike, throwing his head back.
"Is it? Is it not the time, Michael?" interrupted Will.
"Well, can I at least kiss El one last time?" giggled Mike.
"Oh, God." Max facepalmed.
Mike kissed El and reluctantly began to play. He constantly rolled his eyes, huffed and complained. Will tried to not feel hurt by his best friend's behavior but when Mike began to mock the game, something inside Will snapped.
"Fine! You win! Congratulations!" Will sneered as he got up from his seat, to leave.
"Will, I was just messing around!" Mike tried to stop Will from leaving but the other boy wasn't taking it. "Let's finish for real!"
"Just forget it Mike" sighed Will packing up the wizards chess.
"But I want to keep playing, ok?"
"I said forget it Mike, okay?" Will exclaimed "I'm going outside"
Mike put himself in between Will and the door.
"Move!" growled Will, pushing Mike and brushing passed him.
"Will, come on! You can't leave!" floundered Mike.
Bet, thought Will with bitterness.
"Listen, I said I was sorry, all right? It's a really cool game! I'm just busy with other stuff right now." Mike was clearly trying to excuse his actions but Will wasn't having it.
"Yeah, Mike, that's the problem: you guys are always busy and you're ruining The Party."
Will was finally getting to say all those things he'd felt over the the last month but hadn't told anyone out of fear. Out of fear of hurting Mike, but now Will couldn't give a fuck about Mike and his stupid feelings.
"That's just not true!" Mike shot defensively.
"Really? Where's Dustin now?" Will asked crossing his arms over his chest.
Mike remained silent as he pursed his lips.
Will asked this fully conscious Mike wouldn't know. Dustin was hanging out with Steve, someone who Dustin had bonded with over the summer. Will knew this because his brother Jonathan was Steve's boyfriend, and had told Will, Dustin tagged along on many of the couple's dates.
"See? You don't even know and you don't even care." Will spat "And obviously he doesn't either and I don't blame him. You're ruining everything and for what? So you can swap spit with some stupid girl?"
Will shouldn't have called El stupid, he knows but in the heat of the moment and with all the bubbling anger he felt, he couldn't care less.
"El's not stupid! It's not my fault you don't like girls!" Mike yelled.
That felt like a blow in the gut, leaving Will breathless and trembling. This meant he was weak and men shouldn't be weak (or so his father had taught him and Jonathan). Still, as much as it hurt, he wouldn't cry. At least not in front of Mike.
Mike must have known he fucked up because his voice became softer and quieter.
"Look, I'm not trying to be a jerk, ok?" Mike whispered but Will scoffed. "But we're not kids anymore, I mean, what did you think, really? That we were never gonna get girlfriends? That we were gonna sit in my basement all day and play games for the rest of our lives?''
Something in the way Mike said it sounded almost desperate and pleading.
"Yeah, I guess I did." hissed Will with venom and ironically Mike seemed more heartbroken than the brunet.
Will turned around on his heel and ran away towards the bathroom, trying to swallow the lump of rage he felt in his throat.
He truly was alone, he has no one to go to. He really didn't feel like going to his brother or mother and Robin was probably annoying (read: flirting with) Nancy.
When he opened the door and entered the bathroom, he sat under the sink and curled on himself. His breathing grew heavy as he repeated "Stupid, Stupid, Stupid" over and over like some sick mantra, until someone gently tapped him on the shoulder. He looked up and saw Professor Creel looking at him concerned.
"Will? Are you ok?" the teacher asked sitting down next to Will.
"No, not really, Professor." he answered. He felt comfortable with Professor Creel, he was the head of Will's house, after all.
"Call me Henry." smiled the blond "Not feeling too good, huh? Well, I can't have Slytherin's best Beater not feel good, now can I?"
Will chuckled feeling proud. At least someone seemed to appreciate his Quidditch skills.
"You know when I feel sad I like to write about it in my diary. Here, I'm gonna give you this notebook so that you can use it as a diary, ok?"
Henry handed him a black notebook.
"Um, yeah, ok. Cool" Will took the notebook and held it gingerly.
"Well, I best be off. I was having quite the discussion with Professor Argyle about a muggle herb called cannabis." smiled Henry.
Will didn't care about Mike saying Henry was untrustworthy, Henry was a great person who cared about Will unlike Mike, his former best friend.
Henry got up and left the bathroom leaving Will alone, once again.
Since Will had nothing else to do he decided to go inside the nearest stall, sit down and write something in the diary. So he took out the spare quill and ink he always had on himself. After all, he was an artist.
"Hello, my name is Will Byers." he wrote.
His writing disappeared and instead another message appeared.
Hello Will, I'm 001.
Will stared at the notebook in shock.
"Are you alive?" Will wrote, quickly.
You could say that, yes. I'm a trapped consciousness inside of this diary, more precisely. Still, I once was a Hogwarts student, which I’m guessing you are, right?
“Yes, I’m from the Slytherin house and starting my third year!” he corresponded.
I was a Slytherin too, the best house. If I do say so myself.
Will chuckled, was Slytherin truly the best house? Everyone seemed to despise them. Yeah, there were a couple of assholes in the house, like Billy and Troy, but weren’t there assholes in every house?
Will could name a few ones out of the top of his head: Steve, a Gryffindor, used to be an asshole until Jonathan and him got into a fistfight; Fred Benson, a Ravenclaw, had apparently done some pretty fucked up stuff too; Jason Carver, another Gryffindor, was notorious for being extremely stuck up and throwing wild parties in the boy’s dorm (there were also rumors of him cheating on his girlfriend, poor Chrissy Cunningham, with several girls).
"Well, do you mind if I tell you something? You can’t tell anyone, though.” Will scribbled in his cursive writing.
Sure. Who would I tell anyways?
“Ok, well the thing is that….” Will recounted what happened with Mike and the further in the story, the tighter he gripped his quill. When he finished, he waited to see 001’s response:
That kid sounds like such an ass, not gonna lie. You should really stop considering him your best friend. Best friends don’t treat you like absolute garbage.
Will pondered this, and really, 001 was right.
This “conversation” kept on going for the rest of the train ride and school year. Will avoided The Party, except Max, at all costs and constantly run away to “talk” with 001 (much to Mike’s disgust and jealousy).
The year went by swiftly until the very last week of June, during which, Billy had begun a fire in the Forbidden Forest in a desperate attempt to break up Max and Lucas. Fortunately, neither Lucas or Max had been harmed but Billy died. The fire was known as The Great Fire of ‘85 and it left Max completely devastated. Mostly, because her step-brother had tried to murder her and Lucas for being an interracial couple. This left her with a huge emotional burden she’d only told Will.
Thanks to 001 he’d realized that he didn’t need to be friends that weren’t from his own house. 001 had taught Will new and more powerful spells, he’d also taught Will about how being a Slytherin mean being the best.
Now, Will was determined for Max to meet 001, his other best friend, and for him to teach Max all the things he’d taught Will. So he asked a delighted Professor Creel for another notebook for Max, who reluctantly accepted it. After a day of using it, she admitted to having loved the present.
Max and Will liked to gush about 001’s appearance and while Will imagined him as a handsome man, Max imagine him as a sickly old man. They loved their new friend and thought that 001 was the only friend they needed.
In their innocence, they both believed to have met an angel or even god, when they’d actually made a deal with the devil.

If the Duffers are smart, they’ll have every character who has died to something from the Upside Down or died in the Upside Down be “alive” there and help the fight from the inside while the others fight from the outside.

Finally deciding to post on here again, so here's a summary of my current favorite highly-in-progress Stranger Things AU:
Vecna's Generals
A post-Season 4 timeline where the final attack on Vecna injuried him into near paralysis. To combat this, he revives the lost friends and foes of The Party, to take his powers and continue the fight in his stead. They return intact, yet cursed with the appearance of their cause of death.
While this collection of doomed soldiers are able to remain themselves for the most part, their leader is able to take control of them whenever he requires, to act out his destructive plans.
When they are free, or dormant, they are seen as "The Imprisoned".
When they are controlled, or activated, they are seen as "The Board".
Barbra Holland
Commander of the Demogorgon Legion
Physical changes ) Has taken on the aspects of a Demogorgan: taller, elongated limbs with clawed hands and feet, horribly skinny in the torso. Lower jaw can unlatch into two folds like the five-lipped face, but other facial features remain normal
Powers ) Extreme strength. Ability to smell blood - and thus detect life - from miles away. The brain of the Demogorgan hive mind
Personality when dormant ) Incredibly disturbed from her death and current situation. Limits speech and motion due to the difficulty. She tries to make friends with the rest of the group, but at first was only really close with Bob. She soon made friends with Fred through mutual connection with Nancy. Likes to listen to Eddie rant to her about how much the Party, mainly Nancy and Steve, have changed since she died, as it gives her a sense of peace
Personality when activated ) Feral, but efficient and merciful. Unable to speak. Acts and moves like any other Demogorgon
Bob Newby
Commander of the Demodog Legion
Physical changes ) Much like Barbara, he takes on the physical aspects of the Demodogs: proportional legs, clawed and elongated limbs, split lower jaw
Powers ) Incredibly fast, even when running on two legs. Enhanced hearing. Can break through most any material, ranging from wood to concrete to steel. The brain of the Demodog hive mind
Personality when dormant ) Constantly confused, but does his best to understand the situation. Feels responsible for caring for the others, even though he has a very small grasp on everything happening, since he is the only actual adult of them all. Disgusted with what he’s been turned into. Despite his changes, he enjoys talking with Eddie about the Byers family he knew from before he died
Personality when activated ) Once again, very similar to Barbra and the creatures he commands. Runs on four legs, and only extends onto two when necessary
Billy Hargrove
Right hand to the Mind Flayer
Physical changes ) Two additional pairs of arms formed from Mind Flayer smoke extend from his torso. The hole in his chest contains a small swirling mass of smoke. Veins pronounced in black and eyes bloodshot, similar to the locker room scene in Season 3
Powers ) Able to possess other beings by inserting the Mind Flayer smoke into their bodies. Can manipulate the smoke around him into whatever he requires. Can communicate directly with the Mind Flayer, and is able to prohibit the Mind Flayer from invading his mind, though only when dormant and for short periods of time
Personality when dormant ) Terrified at the fact that he’s somewhat being used as a vessel once again. Attempting to be nicer towards the others who suffer his same fate, if only to find some saving grace in those alongside him. Has found himself to enjoy Patrick’s company, though he couldn't care less to talk to many of the others, especially Jason. Has a minor understanding of their situation, and tries to find a way to free himself from the Mind Flayer’s influence once again. Desperately wants to find Max and the Party, to apologize and fix what he left broken
Personality when activated ) Acts the same as he did when first possessed by the Mind Flayer. Has an intense god complex, and sees everyone in Hawkins as pawns for him to play with
The Sacrifices
Vecna’s right hand men, and the symbolic leaders of The Board. Because of this and an odd sense of humor?, Fred has assigned them each chess-related titles.
Physical changes ) Due to the manner of their deaths, they each have intense flexibility, with fully rotatable limbs and a detachable jaw. Empty, bleeding eye sockets. Worsened sight, though there is no explanation as to how they can see at all. They’re all separate from Vecna’s overall hive mind, controlled only by the man himself
Powers) Due to the nature of Vecna’s killing, he still holds the abilities of the Hawkins Lab children, three of which he has passed on to The Sacrifices. Each of them have telekinesis, alongside a personal power.
Chrissy Cunningham
- The Bishop
- Personal Power) Can create highly realistic illusions, to the point where the subject's brain perceives touch. Her personal power is the strongest of the other Sacrifices
- Personality when dormant) Tries way too hard to remain positive, when their situation leaves her terrified. Knowing both Jason and Eddie died and joined her in this place just makes it worse. She sticks with Eddie most of the time out of comfort, since Jason scares her after she found out what he did in light of her death
Fred Benson
- The Rook
- Personal Power) Can “sight jump”, able to see through the eyes of another person. He cannot hear or control the person during this, however. He's seen as the weakest of The Sacrifices
- Personality when dormant) In spite of his own fear, he attempts to find a meaning or an out to their state. Though he understands its dangerous, ever since discovering his powers, he's been using them to discreetly check on The Party for those of The Imprisoned who were their friends
Patrick McKinney
- The Knight
- Personal Power) Can affect another person’s feelings, able to change or intensify them. His telekinesis is the strongest of The Sacrifices
- Personality when dormant) In a similar boat to Chrissy, but stands by Jason since he still doesn’t fully trust Eddie. However, he does feel some guilt over hunting Eddie after seeing Chrissy's reaction to the knowledge
Personality when activated ) Each of The Sacrifices share one mind and personality. They much prefer to take advantage of their new bodily functions, and remain in horribly contorted poses just for the horror. Have an odd sort of playfulness, and believe they’re owed something from the people of Hawkins considering their status in life and in Vecna’s service
Eddie Munson
Commander of the Demobat Legion
Physical changes ) Has taken on some aspects of the Demobats, though it's more subtle than Barbara's and Bob's. Large grey Demobat wings extend from his back. Sharp fangs and claws. A long prehensile tail that can split apart, much like that of a Demobat's. Dark sunken eyes with a white pupil, with black discoloration in his fingertips and around his eyes; it's unknown why he is the only one to have this affliction
Powers ) Vecna took pity when he revived Eddie, since he believed they had once lived similar lives. Thus, he gave Eddie the powers of a Hawkins Lab child; telekinesis, and the ability to translate emotion into destruction (anger = exploding anything in his vicinity, fear/sadness/pain = compressing objects into tight balls that burst on contact, happiness = melting objects through touch). Wings allow for flight. Eyes grant him enhanced night vision. The brain of the Demobat hive mind
Personality when dormant ) Considering he fought Vecna alongside the Party, he ends up knowing the most about their situation and becomes an impromptu leader of The Imprisoned. While most of the others either don't trust him or know him, they understand that he’s their best bet. Nevertheless, he’s still absolutely terrified, and clings to Chrissy out of a similar comfort that she has towards him. He likes talking with Bob and Barbra, since they provide a small connection to the Party. He’s mostly indifferent to Fred, Billy, and Patrick, though he feels bad for how they've come to this situation. He still despises Jason, now even more so after finding out Jason and his friends attacked Lucas, Max, and Erica. The two constantly have arguments and fights, made more deadly from their new appearances. Still, he doesn't stop wanting to fight against Vecna, desperately hoping to reach Dustin and the others while keeping everyone out of danger
Personality when activated ) Has the most control over his activated self. He acts much like his DM persona, smug and taunting and insistent. Refuses to touch ground, constantly flying
Jason Carver
Guardian of the Gates
Physical changes ) His torso is split in two, the halves still controllable and barely held together with Upside Down vines. The center of the halves house a mini Gate, constantly glowing red. Eyes turned a dull white in color, similar to Vecna
Powers ) Has the ability to travel between Gates and the Upside Down through the Gate in his stomach, essentially teleporting. Can also create new Gates and control the vines of the Upside Down
Personality when dormant ) Still very angry and untrusting, but it’s more to maintain some normalcy for himself. Despite everything saying otherwise, he still believes that Eddie had a hand in Vecna’s uprising and Chrissy's death. However, he does wish to return to normal, so he permits some trust into Eddie. He’s happy to see Chrissy and Patrick back, though it’s not exactly returned. Mostly he's just lonely and scared, and craves the ignorance they all had before
Personality when activated ) Ruthless and silent. His abilities allow him to be everywhere at once, so he uses that innate fear to his advantage
Max Mayfield
The Power Source / The Victim of Hawkins
Physical changes) The least affected visibly, but she no longer has a body. Slightly transparent, and is unable to interact with others in reality; in a word, ghost-like
Powers) Able to mimic Vecna’s curse, which is the only way she can interact with anyone. Can infiltrate the dreams of those she chooses, but not for long
Purpose) She was taken by Vecna after being killed, but with her body still functioning, she’s able to remain conscious inside his mind. Only remains alive due to being Vecna's only source of energy, and is the only reason he remains alive. Most of The Imprisoned and The Party are unaware of her existence for a long time, until she finds a way to contact them properly and act as a spy to take Vecna down from the inside

you want a revelation, some kind of resolution
Well this was one shitty creek of a situation he was knee deep in. Not that Jason tended to expect any better from the dumpster of his second life.
“Boss, what do we do?” Petey asked, his voice higher and squeakier than normal with fear. “We got Bats coverin’ us from all sides.”
“Just keep cool, I know how to take care of Bats,” Jason growled out trying to keep his skittish gang in line. Though it really wasn’t much of a gang at this point, since Jay had offed most of the major players and their associates. Right now the Red Hood Gang was just a bunch of snot nosed kids with issues, anger and whole lot to prove. That included their boss.
“We got a bunch of ammo here, none of it armor piercing but it should provide enough cover for you and the youngins to scram,” Tristan said. He was actually the oldest of them all at 26. Jay didn’t want to admit how hard it was to resist the urge to fall in step behind him. He’d mentioned once he had 3 younger siblings, sometimes talking to him made Jason think of better times with Dick...
“I told you we were doing too much, too fast,” Marco spat as he hastily loaded up empty pistol magazines. “Now we got the whole goddamn Bat Circus waiting to pounce on us.”
“Nah, it ain’t the body count they’re pissed about,” Jason mumbled to himself as he did his own double checks and loosened himself up for brawl.
Alf had helped him with his 8th Grade production of Macbeth, he’d played Banquo, and had told him to find the happy middle ground of drama, between dull and maudlin. In his grand revenge scheme of leveraging his memory to hurt Bruce, he’d definitely overshot the mark and gotten everyone’s blood up. Hence this very aggressive show of force of trapping them in their current safe house. Only something about this whole thing wasn’t right.
“What I want to know,” Jason, Hood, said as the hairs on the back of his neck tingled. “Is why we’ve had Bats on our ass for 8 whole minutes and not one of them has made an appearance.”
“Maybe they’re already in here, hiding y’know like they do,” Mikey piped up.
“No, I’d know,” Hood responded purposefully enigmatically as he tried to pinpoint what was throwing him off. Something was different. Something was wrong and he couldn’t say what... There was a polite but insistent knock on the entrance of the warehouse.
“They’re knocking?” Big Mike, completely separate from Mikey, gaped incredulously. Everyone else drew their weapons onto the entrance while Jason concentrated on the sounds of warehouse, waiting for the other shoe to drop. He heard the near silent creaks of footsteps on the roof but no one was using the distraction to break in. Had Bruce changed up his MO that much while Jay had been gone?
“Let me in, dipshit, it’s cold out here,” a voice came from the other side of the door. “You got a choice between me and a whole lot of angry Bats. Trust me, I’m prettier.”
“Fuck,” Jason swore, lowering his weapon as he thought about how to get out of this situation. He wasn’t ready for this, wasn’t sure if he’d ever be ready for this. “Back up gents, weapons up but if you fire the next shot is in your skull, capisce?” Behind his hood, he pursed his lips and glared at the closed door. “Doors open,” he called. “No Bats, just you.”
The door was opened casually, like their guest was walking into a party instead of a den of murders and thieves. He stepped with no trace of discomfort, opening and closing the door with his foot while his thumbs were looped through the beltloop of his jeans. Blue eyes scanned the area, his face was neutral but calculating as he took in Jay and his men. God his face...
“Hood,” the man nodded at him then the guys, “Gentlemen. How’s it going?”
“He’s just a brat, lets ice him,” Booker growled, aggressively posturing with his pistol. The man eyed Booker with an amused half smirk, not moving from his comfortable slouch. He didn’t need to, all he had to do was open his mouth.
“Fucking cool it, that brat can take down Superman,” Jason hissed. His weapon was still deliberately pointed down at the floor. He was having trouble keeping eye contact with his former best friend, no way was he gonna aim a gun at him. “So the Bat realized he and his child soldiers couldn’t take me alone so he called in the big guns, huh?”
“Nice to see you too, Hood,” Billy Batson, grinned with too many teeth to mean it as anything but a threat. “And no, your Dad got a location on you and ditched the weekly early. Didn’t realize I followed till he about to break in. I convinced him to stay outside for a minute while we talked, like old times.”
“Batman’s your dad?” Petey squawked, lowering his weapon to gape over at Jason. The others guys mumbled amongst themselves while Jay just growled at Bill’s small, shit eating grin. Damn bastard knew he had all the cards which was why he was here in his human body and not as the big guy. Hell of a lot easier to shoot at an invulnerable god then his best friend in a beaten leather jacket.
“I’m adopted, not that it made much difference in the end,” Bill’s smile slipped a bit. “What do you want, B?”
“I want you,” Bill stated. “If your guys put down their weapons, I can keep the Bats off them long enough to let them escape but only if you come with me.”
“And why the fuck would I go with you?” Jay asked through gritted teeth. As if he didn’t drive to Fawcett after every major fight with Bruce. As if hadn’t felt completely safe flying high in the sky in Marvel’s arms. As if Bill wasn’t the last person he talked to before he left Gotham for the last time, a lifetime ago...
Bill’s eyes, a faded sky blue with little streaks of gold and brown in them, glared back at hood. Once upon a time, they’d had similar blue eyes but now Jason’s eyes were more green than blue. Just another thing separating them.
“Because I had to skip dinner hunting down your ass so you owe me.” Looking like an overconfident ass, and just a tiny bit cool, Bill walked past them and opened the back door. “Boys, weapons down and you’re free to go. Hood, grab your coat, it’s cold out and I’m way too pissed at you to be your cuddle buddy.”
XxX
Bill tried not to stare at Jason sitting across the table but it was hard. He’d missed his friend so much, wasted so much grief wanting him back even for a moment. And yet what was supposed to be a joyous moment was spoiled by the boiling anger he was barely keeping a lid on. Instead, he stared intently into his coffee as he stirred in more cream while Jason looked intently at the menu.
“It’s funny you’re studying that so hard when we both know you’re ordering a chili dog,” Bill said impatiently when he grew tired of the tense silence. Even Atlas’ stamina wore out at some point. Jay flipped the menu down and sneered at him and god for a moment it felt like old times. Except Jason was older, he had new scars Bill didn’t recognize and old ones that were simply gone. His hair had gone partially grey and his eyes were different but the freckles on his nose wrinkled the same way they always did when he was annoyed.
“Yeah, well maybe you don’t know me as well as you thought, short stack,” Jay sniped back. He had one arm stretched over the back of their booth and his legs sprawled out but there was a tenseness that said he was ready to run at a moment’s notice. Like he no longer trusted Bill anymore.
“Sorry I don’t look like a linebacker on venom,” Bill countered. Jay had always been a bit taller than him but not by much. But whatever had happened to him (the Pit Bruce had, he didn’t want to think about how much that had hurt) it took away all evidence of Jay’s rough childhood living. Bill, on the other hand, was still scrawny, his height small and his immune system shit.
“You boys ready to order?” Their waitress, Marcy, asked with a gentle smile.
“Yes Ma’am, I’ll have some of your 24 hr breakfast with a ham and cheese omelet extra cheese and home fries. Jay?”
“2 Chili dogs,” he grumbled, handing over the menu even as Bill hid his smile in his coffee cup. “How’d you get B off my ass?”
“I work alongside him on the team. He knows when to push me and when not to, he knows that he owes me,” Bill replied with a shrug before setting his coffee down. “Jason,” he sighed, “what the hell are you doing?”
“Oh shove off with your holier than thou shit,” Jay growled, turning to face out the window. They both knew that Bruce and most likely the others were casing the place but, for now, they were out of sight. “You don’t know what I’ve been through, what that man did to-”
“Then maybe you should tell me,” Bill frowned, gripping his cup. “Maybe instead of announcing your return with a duffle bag of heads you could’ve come to us and we’d have helped you get your shit together.”
“B-”
“Almost broke when you died,” Bill cut him off. “Jay I don’t know what you think happened but we almost lost him. If it weren’t for Tim,” Jason’s eyes turned menacingly dark so Bill diverted. “Jesus Jay, I took a leave of absence for almost a month. I never had many friends, losing you, it was like the world dropped out underneath me.”
“Yeah, well you recovered real well,” Jason huffed, leaning over the table to clench and unclench his fists. “Everyone moved on.”
“Did you think the whole world would stop for you?” Bill accused with a scoff. “Grow up, it may have felt like my world died but there were still villains to be foiled, civilians who needed saving. We moved on because the only other option was to dig a grave right next to yours. God knows Bruce did his damndest to do just that.”
“Here ya go, loves, give me a shout if you need anything else,” Marcy said, depositing their meals. Despite having had food security and his own money in his pocket for years, the sight of a full plate before him still gave his heart a little skip. He wondered if Jay remembered the feeling or if he’d forgotten that too.
“Whatever, you don’t get it so I don’t want to talk about it,” Jay grumbled, hunching over and biting into his hotdog. “The fuck you been up to, outside of capes?”
“Got my GED because the League of Babysitters were breathing down my neck. I do odd jobs here and there, whatever I can get with flexible hours. I’m thinking of doing online classes at Fawcett CC to get my degree in social work.” Jason paused for a moment before continuing to devour his dog. Bill, who learned better manners on the streets, ate like a normal human being.
“You’d be good at that,” Jay said as he polished off the first hotdog. “I thought I might do that, back in the day.”
“I know, we talked about it,” Bill nodded, “can’t say I wasn’t thinking about that when I started filling out applications. There’s a memorial case for Robin in the Cave, a Library in Gotham named after Bruce Wayne’s son but I wanted the memory of Jay, my idiot friend, to carry on too.”
“Bill,” Jay heaved out a heavy sigh. “Why am I here?”
“In this diner? on this side of the veil?” Bill questioned, “can’t really answer the second one but as for the former, maybe I just wanted to watch my best friend make a slobbery mess out of chili dogs again.”
“I ain’t your best friend,” Jason said grabbing his second hotdog.
“Fuck you, yes you are. You never stopped being my best friend which why I’m so mad I could scream at you for the shit you pulled. I can see being mad at the world, I can even see why you’re mad at Bruce but me, Jay?” he asked, not disguising his hurt. “I had to hear about you coming back from a League debrief as Marvel. Had to go a whole shift being calm and composed before I could change back and completely fall apart.”
“The hell was I supposed to say?” Jay asked a bit too loudly. Marcy glanced over at them from across the diner. “I’m not, fuck, I’m not that snot nosed kid anymore who thought being a hero gave him magic. He died and I’m the one who crawled into his carcass and came back. Those times we had were good but they’re gone.”
“Well that’s up for me to decide, isn’t it?” Bill said with a bite of his potatoes. “So as your former and current best friend, it is my duty to tell you that you need to get your head out of your ass. Stop doing stupid shit to piss people off and do things that will actually help you because you know what? I’m not the same person you left either. You’re not special, you’re just as mortal as the rest of us.”
“Says you,” Jason snorted. He reached over and grabbed Bill’s coffee and took a swig. “You still take your crap coffee the same, drowned in cream with not a drop of sugar.”
“And you still can’t buy your own coffee and order it how you want,” Bill said with a smile, stealing it back. The atmosphere was good, calm and silent as they finished their dinners
“I’m not going back with B,” Jason said quietly.
“I figured,” Bill nodded as he signaled Marcy for the check.
“And I’m not stopping what I’m doing in Gotham, cleaning out the filth the way Batman never could,” Jay growled resolutely.
“I don’t agree with your methods, never will. I won’t be complicit to your demons but I will be your friend. Just think about what it is you want, Jay, that’s all I ask. Oh and keep in contact this time, asshole,” he scribbled his address and phone number on one of the napkins. “Come by anytime but leave the hood at home or you’ll have to deal with the other guy.”
“Shit you’re tougher than him any day,” Jason said, shoving the napkin roughly in his jacket before standing up. “It’s been - Good to see you again, Bill. I missed you.” He stuck out a fist which Bill bumped in return.
“Not as much as I missed you. Take care of yourself, Jason and try to imagine my disappointed face next time you think about killing someone.”
“Won’t need to imagine, I’ll see it myself when I come to check out your digs. Now I gotta avoid a whole host of flying rodents, see ya,” he said with a lazy, backward wave as he left via the back entrance. Feeling full and content, Bill waited patiently for the check.
“Oh baby, you’re all settled up,” Marcy said as she swung by the table. “Your friend gave me a 50 while I was seating you.” She chuckled and refilled his coffee. “Stay as long as you like and if I were you, I’d keep that friend. He’s a good one.”
“Don’t I know it,” Bill cheered, raising his mug in appreciation as he sipped the hot coffee. It was starting to rain outside but Bill was in no hurry to leave. So he sat at his booth and enjoyed his second cup while basking in the glow of a right wronged. No matter how far astray he went, Jay was still Jay. Bill didn’t need the Wisdom of Solomon to tell him that he just had to wait for Jason to come around.

love the idea of billy being able to approach anyone at school and it just being accepted. him not necessarily being apart of the popular crowd but anytime he chooses to grace them with his presence, they're all over him, offering him a seat and the latest hottest gossip. him talking to some nerd in class, asking for a pen becos he doesn't believe in bringing his own school supplies, and said nerd internally rolling their eyes but still handing over a pen. him talking to the drama kids, asking where they got that sick as fuck leather jacket for their musical, getting confused and lowkey alarmed looks but still an answer.
love the idea of there being only a select few people that can approach him and have him actually respond and acknowledge them, everyone else not even getting a glance.
eddie being one of them.
eddie and billy seeming to become eddie and billy overnight, like one day they were strangers and the next they were basically inseparable.
eddie walking up behind billy in the hallway and swinging an arm over his shoulder, fucking with his hair, before dumping half the shit he was carrying in billy’s basically unused satchel. billy giving him a what the fuck look but still holding it open for him, and eddie rolling his eyes and saying it was fucking empty anyway, billy shoving his satchel onto eddie's shoulder cos he’s not carrying around eddie's shit for him all day.
eddie being able to lean against billy's car, jump in the passenger seat without an invitation or even a comment, cos billy does the same thing to eddie's van just as often.
they have one class together, and their teacher’s given up on separating them, cos eddie’s just gonna talk to billy from across the room anyway, and billy’s gonna throw notes back to him, ripping up the piece of paper he borrowed from the guy beside him and throwing them at eddie's hair.
they have fun in detention together.
heathers another one.
they’re coworkers, yeah, but heather was probably the first person that billy ever truly gave a shit about in this shithole of a town. heathers been a cheerleader since becoming a cheerleader was an option, but somehow, like billy these days, always seems to just do her own thing.
she can sit on billy’s lap at lunch if they both bother with the cafeteria and the most billy will do is wrap an arm around her waist and move around 'til their more comfortable.
she can go through his shit to find his car keys to make a quick run to his car at lunch to find some spare hairbands and bobby-pins cos her’s broke and billy’s got spare shit everywhere in his car ever since he basically started being everyone’s personal chauffeur.
she can drag his notes across and copy everything he's written cos she was too busy texting chrissy under the table to pay attention and the most billy will do is ask what the plans were for that night. his notes half the time are basically illegible but billy's more or less somehow got mostly straight A's so heather'll take it.
sometimes she wears his jacket. rips him off about the lip stain. billy tells her to do a better one since she gives so much of a fuck.
chrissy joins billy’s inner-circle slowly, then instantly.
billy knows of her, has probably even spoke to her, but it’s not until they meet in eddie's trailer and all smoke up together - eddie and billy fucking around on eddie's guitars, heather with her feet swung over the back of the couch, chrissy sitting tense on the single armchair before slowly loosening up - that billy feels like he actually meets her.
suddenly, she’s pulling away from jason, from the other basketball players, from all her cheer friends, and slowly she’s hanging out with heather under the bleachers, she’s meeting up with eddie in the woods, and she’s waiting around the camaro at the end of the day to catch a ride home.
suddenly billy’s waiting around after basketball/cheer practice until chrissy’s ready to leave, cos jason's been talking a lot of shit lately, and billy doesn’t really think he’s got it in him to do something reckless, but he’s also not stupid enough to underestimate a guy like jason carver.
chrissy getting nervous when she sees jason loitering around but then she sees billy waiting just behind him, and she’s feeling brave suddenly, so she practically dances her way over to billy, grabs his hand before leaning into his side, and billy’s leaning right back and dropping her hand so he can wrap his arm around her shoulder, and she leaves without looking back. billy flips jason the bird over his shoulder.
max, obviously, when she starts going to the same high school. they’ve spent the previous summer working so much shit out, and it doesn’t mean they’re not still at each others throats over the stupidest shit, but it does mean that when billy bitches about having to wait around after her stupid nerd clubs, he does it without that much heat, and when max bitches about having to deal with the fact that every single person and teacher in this damn school has an opinion on her just becos she’s billy hargrove’s little sister, she sometimes sounds kind of proud to have that label. most of the time, she’s just annoyed.
max sometimes shoves her shit in billy’s locker, becos her locker’s full of dustin’s science shit, and sometimes when she’s carrying her board around at the end of the day, billy’ll come up behind her and smack it out of her grasp before skating down the hallway. she always feels vindicated when billy gets caught though, cos she never does.
shaking billy down for lunch money, cos susan seems to think max actually likes tunafish sandwiches, when she rly truly fucking hates them. billy usually telling her to fucking scram, but occasionally giving in and passing her some change.
max sometimes tracking him down at the start of her lunch period and holding a hand out for his car keys, a pissed off look on his face, and billy takes one look behind he to see her lil gang looking all shifty, and billy - having been on the receiving end of her attitude fucking constantly in the past - just sighing before handing his keys over. more often than not, trailing behind her, even when she tells him to fuck off, just throwing a shit eating grin her way with an aww, so little maxine can have a pity party for one? fuck no. what'd the fuckers do this time?
lucas, becos he’s max’s boyfriend, and also becos he’s on the team, and he seems to be sneaking over every other weekend, and things may still be rocky between them, but since billy make his apology, they’ve been getting better. they’re not exactly besties, but sometimes they play a one on one game after practice ends and no one’s in a rush to get home, and most times lucas will win becos he’s honestly just better than billy at basketball, and each time billy will ask for best out of three, then best out of five, cos he fucking sucks at losing.
when jason and some of the other basketball dickheads start trying to drag lucas in, pulling their fake shit only to split whenever it’s convenient, billy just watches on before rolling his eyes and pulling lucas’ gear closer to his in the locker room and gives him the worlds shittest pep talk. jason carver ain’t shit, trust me. fuck that guy.
carol! and tommy! except billy’s a dick and he thinks it’s funny to fuck with tommy, so when carol comes up to him and catches him up to date with the latest wild happenings from the party he couldn’t be fucked to attend the night before, crashing at eddie’s with the others instead, and tommy tries to go in for a simple bro-handshake, billy gives him a blank stare and holds his hand out limply, not participating, watches the look on tommy’s face go from excited to confused, before finally grabbing him by the hand and pulling him close, hand on his shoulder, ‘i’m fucking with you’, then doing the stupid bro-shake thing. tommy laughing it off but turning to carol with wide eyes, every fucking time, like ‘shit, are we cool? are we friends?’ and carol just patting him on the shoulder before tucking herself into his side, all ‘yeah, babe, you're good.’
#anyway au where when billy first rolled into town; he truly did feel the need to like. make himself big. surround himself with crowds#fit in with the popular kids. attend every party. but then s3 happened#or like the non-upsidedown version but still a major critical life changing event. and when hes as healed as hes gonna get#and finally standing on his own two feet; trying to get his life back on track#he just. cant be fucked with keeping up appearances anymore. fuck being basketball captain fuck being the keg king fuck being That Guy#instead all he needs is his sister and his few people. that's literally all that matters.#anyway i think its be FUN if eddie can't understand shit in class so he's like 'billy what the fucks this mean'#but the teacher DID separate them so billy - from the literal other side of class - tries to explain it in terms eddie will click with#much to the teachers surprise; eddies grades actually improve#also. heather and chrissy wearing the guys jackets. its THAT simple#but also consider: chrissy wearing eddies jacket but eddies kinda chilly so billy offers him his leather jacket#that happens to be in the car. while heathers got his denim one. and billys just walking around in sleeves in a hawkins winter like a tool#max gives him SO much shit#also billy tommy and carol is like. billy was Faking it Til he Could Make it when he first met them so he keeps them at a distance#but then when he's in hospital and recovering; before eddie and chrissy are rly on his radar#and its just max and heather sitting by his side; tommy and carol come through#they're the only ones from billys Friend Group that reach out and visit; that check in; that fucking care#so when billy does stroll back into school. he just - walks straight pass jason and all his fake ass sympathies; straight past the girls#that use to hang all over him; gives tommy and carol a two finger salute as he walks by but completely ignores everyone else#and meets up w heather at his locker#m#nqff
