The Bingham Canyon Mine is an open-pit mine in Salt Lake City, Utah. At 2.5 miles (4 km) wide and 0.75 miles (1.2 km) deep, it is the largest man made excavation in the world. It is also considered to have produced more copper than any other mine in history – more than 17,000,000 tons.

Dramatic expansion of copper production went hand-in-hand with the Second Industrial Revolution that began in the 1870s, as copper was required for generating and transmitting electricity. Historians of natural resources have increasingly emphasized the importance of what happens out of view in the frontiers (places in the global periphery where resources are abundant like the Atacama desert or African copperbelt) and countryside [...]. This huge expansion of copper production was a global event. Only a few years after Bingham Canyon Mine began eating into Utah, open pits were established in the Chilean Andes, the Central African Copperbelt, Mexican deserts, and Japanese mountains. [...] [T]he environmental effects of copper mining went beyond transforming local environments. The new copper mining frontier involved a drastic new rearrangement of multiple and distant natures, as copper mining requires an enormous hinterland in order to sustain itself.

Producing copper not only involves tearing it from the earth. It must be extracted further. Low-grade ores needs to be crushed, smelted and sometimes refined on site, which in turn requires huge volumes of water. Olympic Dam Mine in South Australia extracts 34 million liters of water a day from underground aquifers, far greater than the quantities of copper it extracts. Smelting and refining copper, with a melting point of nearly 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, requires enormous quantities of energy to be sucked in from their surroundings. [...] Some mines in the twentieth century employed tens of thousands of workers, with farms needed to produce food to feed them [...].

In these destructive mining frontiers, securing adequate sources of energy is a perennial problem. In his book Gambling on Ore, Kent Curtis aptly described mining enterprises as vast industrial metabolisms with inputs and outputs encroaching upon various landscapes and ecosystems.

Copper mining firms had lumber departments to clear forest, desperately explored the wide vicinity for coal and other fossil fuels, and seized property rights over water. In 1914, the Anaconda Copper Mining Company owned several coal mines in Wyoming and Montana, and the saw mills it purchased in surrounding villages in Montana cut down more than 84 million feet of wood in a single year.

In the Central African Copperbelt in Zambia and Katanga (a province in the Democratic Republic of Congo), colonial mining companies denuded the landscape of trees for wood-fired power stations and smelters and sunk coal mines when this proved inadequate.

In the interwar period, mining engineers believed they could solve the perennial energy problem through hydroelectricity. Dubbed as “the white gold,” the use of hydropower produced unintended side-effects, requiring even more geoengineering and environmental intervention.

In Katanga, where the first dams were erected by the Belgian firm Union Minière du Haut Katanga in the 1920s, surrounding people and colonial missionaries complained about a mosquito plague and the loss of their lands through floods. [...] Similar schemes were planned for Zambia’s copper mines, which also relied on an enormous ecological hinterland. The largest of these was the Kariba Dam, a towering 128-meter-high wall that dammed the Zambezi River and formed a lake stretching 280 kilometers. Filling the reservoirs took months, and in the process, some 6,000 animals were airlifted from newly formed islands amidst the biblical floods. The event captured the world’s imagination and the effort to save these animals from the new lake was nicknamed Operation Noah.

The tens of thousands of people displaced by the dam attracted less attention.

Copper Mining at Chuquicamata

The Chuquicamata mine in northern Chile’s Atacama Desert is one of the deepest open-pit mines in the world, second only to Bingham Canyon in Utah. The extraction of huge stores of copper has hollowed out the landscape; the largest pit at the site reaches a depth of approximately 1,000 meters (3,300 feet). Evidence of mining here dates as far back as the sixth century C.E., but the modern era of mining began in the 1910s. Within the past several years, operations have moved underground and extraction from open pits has waned.

The scars of mining activity are visible in this image, acquired by the OLI-2 (Operational Land Imager-2) on Landsat 9 on January 4, 2024. Terrace-like mining benches, which support work equipment and catch material from debris slides, appear as concentric rings in the pits. Piles of waste rock containing low concentrations of minable metals lie adjacent to them. Farther afield, tailings ponds hold residual material from the ore enrichment process.

Chuquicamata’s extensive porphyry copper deposits, which form when hot fluids circulate through igneous rocks, have attracted fortune-seekers for centuries. In 1899, a well-preserved mummy was found at the mining site. The man is believed to have been a miner who died in approximately 550 C.E.

Modern mining operations started in 1915, buoyed by new ore-processing technologies and investment from the Guggenheim family’s Chile Exploration Company. Throughout the ensuing decades, the open pits grew wider, deeper, and more numerous, and the footprint of waste rock piles expanded. Dust, gases, and other mining byproducts imperiled the health and safety of residents in the town of Chuquicamata, which was first established as a camp near the mining operations. Starting in 2004, residents began relocating to Calama, a city about 15 kilometers to the south (not shown), leaving the town completely abandoned as of 2007.

In 2019, underground mining began at Chuquicamata as part of a multi-billion-dollar overhaul of operations. The effort aims to reach additional deposits amid slowing productivity and is expected to extend the useful life of the site by at least 40 years, according to the mining company.

Production at the Chuquicamata mine contributes to Chile’s standing as the world’s top copper producing country. Chile’s output accounted for 27 percent of the global supply in 2021.

Yes! I (Hati) am a demon and am bound to a real life object. I can give little sneaky hints about what it may be :)))

Ironically and terrifying to a degree. Its not currently in my possession. Not on purpose that is for sure. I am also not worried about my object being damaged though.

America please do tell us the stories you were about to tell of Utah and Nevada when they were younger

“Of cOURSE I WILL!” America exclaimed excitedly.

“Has anybody ever told you you have a very kickable face?” Nevada asked the Anon, eye twitching.

“Nevada liked to pretend she was older than Utah since she became a state first, but in reality she was born in 1861 while Utah was born in 1850. It was to the point where she gave him lectures, ‘respect your elders, for you are but a spry young cricket while I’m a wise old grasshopper’ comments, and even offering to babysit him. Utah. Who was eleven years older than her. I’m honestly surprised Utah tolerated it as long as he did,” America laughed, “It was interesting to see a five year old asking a sixteen year old to ‘stop being a naive infant.’ Also she gaslighted multiple people into believing her but that’s another story.”

“You were an obnoxious kid,” Utah commented, receiving a sheepish grin from Nevada, “But at least that wasn’t too embarrassing. Mine probably won’t be so bad—”

“Utah was so excited when he discovered silver and lead in Bingham Canyon that when he ran into the room to tell us he accidentally shoved Rhode Island out a window. He was so embarrassed that he tried to bolt out of the room but ended up face planting into a wall and going unconscious.”

“DAD!”

“We had company over too, they witnessed the entire thing.”

Day 150a: Monday May 30, 2022 - “Grand Introductions”

What a day to spend a national holiday than out enjoying a national treasure.  Memorial Day 2022 was marked with introductions to the Grand Canyon for Eve and William.  We took a little adventure road up from Mt Humphreys where we’d camped the night before and drove up to the South Rim for some quick views from the Mather Point, where Eve gained her assignment to become a Junior Ranger.  We then had a roadside picnic of Canyon-Dogs that fueled a short walk through the woods to Shoshone point where nature hugs and celebrations of this treasured landscape were taken and enjoyed.  A few miles away, thousands of tourists peppered the rim and overlooks of a people zoo; but here on Shoshone it was all ours.

We then drove to the Desert Watchtower where we sat with Eve and finished her Junior Ranger book and earned her South Rim Badge.  Due to 9 year old shy-ness, I wound up getting sworn in too.  I did help write the poem and assist with the mad-libs, and did all the driving after all - so I was qualified to take the pledge to the love the parks - especially my favorite one.  Miss Eve, Junior Ranger, also joined the conservancy out here, adopting a Mountain Lion, and for all that I bought her an ice cream cone.  She was tough to convince, but overall I think she liked it and will definitely remember it and tell the stories of what she found here.  William on the other hand -  no doubt that he won’t recall being here at 11 months old but his mama and I will cherish the photos of this little man, out here in one of those important places at such a young age.  And if he grows to love Grand Canyon as much as us, he’ll cherish these photos of himself smiling in front of this timeless place.   At the very minimum, Audrie and I can build a love and reverence for our parks.  He may not remember these exact moments, but we’ll normalize the vibe and the spirit of Go.   Its in his DNA and I can only imagine that knowing we did this with him and seeing his little bum in front of the NP sign, will be a special keepsake for our budding adventurer.

We finished the day with a stop at the Cameron Trading Post before the long drive around to the North Rim.  Packed in the miles, circling this Grand Canyon and as Memorial Day wrapped up, over a wide open backcountry road, it was unaccountably easy to be grateful for all those that gave all to defend our freedoms and our land so that we could so freely get out and bask in the splendor of this important place - one of this nations most splendid treasures.
