#binghe decides he wants a kid

Text
I want Shen Yuan to have an ‘oh shit I want kids’ moment when seeing Binghe interact with children. And then immediately back track that thought.
Him? Have kids? With Binghe?
But the thought lingers in the back of his mind.

AU where there's no system (or a decidedly less restrictive one) and Shen Yuan transmigrates into an OC rogue cultivator before the start of the novel, and decides he's gonna steal the protagonist before Luo Binghe even gets to Cang Qiong.
The logic is sound -- he'll keep Luo Binghe from experiencing neglect and abuse at Shen Qingqiu's hands, raise him away from the pressure of the sects and the likelihood that anyone else might find out about his heritage and try to harm him over it, keep him fully away from the Immortal Alliance Conference, and then Luo Binghe's course will change trajectory because he'll have no reason to want revenge against the world and no access to Xin Mo. Shen Yuan will be able to spare Luo Binghe some suffering and possibly survive in a world less subject to the harrowing whims of a half-mad tyrannical overlord. Win-win!
However, the tricky bit is that he's not sure exactly how far ahead of the novel he is, and also Airplane didn't specify where Luo Binghe grew up. This means that Luo Binghe could be any age younger than twelve and in any number of places along or near to the Luo river.
Shen Yuan decides he's going to approach this by pretending he is looking for the long-lost son of his sister, traveling through the likeliest areas, asking after abandoned children who might fit the protagonist's description. It's a long shot, he knows, and he's mostly relying on the existence of Narrative Destiny. But eventually he is directed by several people towards a particular city, which is not as close to the river as he'd have expected Luo Binghe to grow up, but then again he only knows that was where baby Binghe was found, not where the washerwoman who took him in ultimately lived.
It becomes clear to him, though, that he's been sent to the wrong target. But also why he's been sent astray is apparent in nearly the same breath, because among the slave children living in this area is a little boy who could be his much younger clone.
Seriously, this kid looks just like him! Or, well, close enough. He looks a lot like Shen Yuan's actual nieces and nephews from his past life. It's uncanny.
Also, because of his search, the slave kids get wind of what he's looking for (his long-lost nephew) pretty quick. The boy with the obvious resemblance to him greets Shen Yuan's own assessment with wary cynicism, but he's just a little boy. So it's not difficult to notice the way he's also practically vibrating with hopefulness, half-hiding behind a protective older kid and looking at Shen Yuan with big dark eyes like he expects to be rescued or destroyed with whatever he has to say next.
Shen Yuan has a big problem now. He just knows that if he says something like "actually no this boy is too old to be my nephew" or whatever other excuse, no one will believe him, and also this poor kid is going to be permanently scarred by it. He's going to think Shen Yuan is lying just so that he can reject him. On top of that, he's not in a good situation here. None of these children are even remotely well cared-for.
Shen Yuan's rogue cultivator self isn't rich on the level of being like a wealthy sect leader or anything, but he's made some money since transmigrating by doing random cultivator jobs and quests along the way here. He uses it all to purchase two little slave boys (Do Not Separate), then takes another job and uses that coin to acquire a somewhat rundown manor which used to belong to the local gentry. The Qiu family (rings some bells but that's not exactly an uncommon name) kept it up for a while in case a branch family sprung up in need of a residence, but they've been in decline and the place is downright decrepit, so they had been looking to sell it instead. It's too big for a wandering bachelor like SY to ever need on his own account, but that's sort of the idea. He makes more money taking on cultivator work, at first taking his boys along with him for lack of any alternative. Nerve-wrackingly dangerous! Eventually he hires workers to start restoring the manor, particularly setting up a yard to be a school area, and then starts taking on any freelance jobs he can get in order to steadily buy out the contracts on all the other kids. He gets it nice enough to house and care for as many orphans as he can acquire.
Not because he's a big old softie though!
His story of looking for his nephew is a bust now, since he's apparently "found" the kid. So he's got to change tactics! If he can't find baby Binghe and the washerwoman, the next best approach is to create an opportunity for them to come to him. So once he's got his new household established, he starts offering free lessons to all the local kids. Not just the ones he's taken in, but also any who come by and want to learn some things. It's a tempting setup for anyone who wants their child to get education but can't afford a tutor, and Luo Binghe's mother had been entirely the sort of person who would have packed up and left her situation if there had been an opportunity for it.
On that note, SY also starts hiring single mothers to help look after his new gaggle of children and do the work he doesn't know how to do in these times, like keeping house, laundry, cooking, actually raising kids, etc.
His "little school" is not universally popular. A few groups try and ruin him, because the poverty in the region provides a basis of business for them. The ringleaders of the human traffickers in the area don't want their trade to dry up, even if it means selling all of their merchandise for this round, so when they find out that their underlings let Shen Yuan buy off all the kids they try and intimidate him into returning them (it doesn't go well for them). The Qiu family also isn't thrilled after it becomes clear what he's doing, and get him investigated by the local authorities (read: use their bribed officials and local goons to try and interfere.)
When that doesn't work either the sects get involved, because the Qiu go crying to Huan Hua Palace that Shen Yuan is sketchy and is trying to establish his own sect. So Shen Yuan talks his way around the matter, and frankly the Qiu are small fish even if they're the biggest ones in the local pond, so HHP doesn't care to pursue things much further. (Read: SY could mop the floor with the disciples they sent to investigate him, and it's not worth it to piss off someone this mysterious and powerful just to bully some impoverished children.)
Shen Yuan is appalled by all this bullshit though. Trust the world of PIDW to make it so hard just for a guy to teach some poor kids how to read and do math!
It makes him dig in his heels about it, because he is at heart a stubborn bastard. The fires that once fueled a thousand angry screeds on zhongdian literature site is now aimed at the local magistrate. One of the women he's hired on has some dirt on the Qiu family, which leads SY to dig up some more until he eventually has enough to turn the tables on them. Local officials won't investigate because they've all been bought, but that in and of itself is of some interest to their superiors closer to the palace, and so SY arranges an investigation of his own that goes way further than he thought? Turns out there are some ugly skeletons in the Qiu closets, and the imperial investigator comes down on them hard.
Well, he can't say they didn't have it coming? Though he does feel bad for the children in the family, especially the oldest son, who gets hauled off to jail along with his father. At least the girl is sent to live with relatives. Maybe he should have done more to shield the minors in the situation...?
His kids tell him not to worry about it, though, that apparently young master Qiu was known to run people down in the streets and beat his servants and do other cartoonishly awful things. SY's not sure how much of it is true and how much of it is his little flock of fluffy sheep trying to ease his conscience, though they do all seem to take a lot of vindictive delight in the whole affair. Especially Nephew, who clings to his sleeves and loudly declares that the investigator should have publicly flogged the discredited nobles so that everyone could go watch, and then begs him for sweets as if that wasn't a creepy thing to hear come out of an eight-year-old's mouth. SY just sighs and tells him he can have something good when he finishes his calligraphy practice.
Of course, it's not exactly easy running what is basically an orphanage-slash-school (and maybe a budding sect...?), especially when pretty much all of the kids have been traumatized and faced stuff like rampant dehumanization, food insecurity, abuse, and neglect. Hiring single mothers soon becomes not only a plan to try and lure in Luo Binghe's mom, but an absolute godsend of an idea because SY has no clue WHAT he would do on his own about the discipline issues or emotional breakdowns or acting out that some of the kids get up to once it registers that they're in a safe enough place to unpack their baggage.
Apart from Nephew, SY's favorite kid is the one who came with him, the oldest of the flock of former slave children. He's the big brother of the group, the one who tries his best to look after the others and to not make any trouble himself. But even poor Little Yue is still just a kid who has been through too much, and he also eventually starts having some meltdowns and struggles with processing everything that has happened to him as a vulnerable child in an unkind world.
SY really didn't mean to start a trauma center for mistreated children!
Though, that's still not necessarily a bad thing for Luo Binghe to one day come across, provided he ever actually shows up...
Eventually, Shen Yuan does figure out that he must be ahead even of Luo Binghe's birth, though he still doesn't put together that he's interfered in the scum villain's backstory. Probably something even more amusingly obscure, like the creation year of some random artifact Luo Binghe used in some wife plot or other, tips him off and he mentally throws his hands up in the air. He's got to wait DECADES? Maybe he ought to try and find Luo Binghe's biological parents and just follow them around at this point!
Not that he can, now, though, because he has to make sure no negative IQ villains (who will probably just be cannon fodder for a subplot one day) decide to send goons to literally burn down his orphanage. Also if he's gone for too long his kids get upset. Probably because no one else is as weak to their puppy dog eyes and pleas for treats and toys as he is.
At least it gives him time to shore up his position, and train Nephew and Little Yue more extensively in cultivation. Despite his initial assurances to HHP that he was but a humble orphan wrangler who was only incidentally a cultivator, Shen Yuan does also teach the other kids some basic cultivation exercises. There are a few reasons for that.
One is just the principle of the thing. No, these kids don't all have the potential to become great immortals or anything, but they can still learn some of it and it's good for their health if they do. The only trouble is if they try and push too hard or attempt things beyond their range, and that's a risk with everyone who cultivates. Or even just exercises!
Another reason is that it helps stave off the jealousy that some of the kids have towards those with more cultivation potential. Teaching a lot of the basics all around makes it into just another topic at school. Some kids might not be as good at it as others, but those kids might also be better at math, or memorization, or board games, and while cultivation can open more doors to people as adults, for the children this is generally enough to satisfy their sense of fairness. Or at least reduce outbursts and fights.
Finally, the impression that any of SY's kids might be a cultivator also makes wicked people more reluctant to try and abduct or interfere with them. Cultivators are revered and nearly mythological figures in the public consciousness. It isn't difficult to see why, if even a rogue cultivator NPC like SY* can mop the floor with most random muggers (*Shen Yuan is not a normal rogue cultivator). Not many people want to risk bringing SY's ire down on them, but of those who might chance it if he wasn't around to immediately react, even fewer want to risk that the kids themselves could kick their asses.
Not knowing that only two of the orphans probably could in fact mop the floor with them helps keep all the rest safer, and is more believable when all of them can conduct themselves enough like disciples to fool anyone who doesn't know what to really look for.
Developments that surprise Shen Yuan but wouldn't surprise anyone else who is paying attention:
People start leaving unwanted babies and younger children on his doorstep. Not all the time, but more than once has he had to frantically find wet nurses and worry that he's changed things enough that some fishermen might just randomly drop the protagonist outside his gate, and he wouldn't even know because Binghe would be a literal infant??
Nephew (SJ) and Little Yue (Yue Qi -- only Shen Yuan calls him "Little", especially when he gets taller than SY by the time he's sixteen) are prodigies who get really good at cultivation, really fast, and between that and Shen Yuan's OP skills they completely warp Shen Yuan's ideas for what normal cultivation potential looks like. This would probably cause more problems if he wasn't teaching all the kids how to cultivate anyway, but means his students actually do kinda run the usual range of skills for a small sect.
SJ and YQ swiftly reach the point where they need more advanced equipment than just SY's teaching can provide, if they're going to keep building their skills. Gaining access to certain tools, aids, and materials (like spiritual swords) is a real hurdle though, and usually is for rogue cultivators (one of the major disadvantages of no sect affiliation.) Shen Yuan is hesitant to use stuff from the plot, since it's For Binghe, but he eventually caves and starts going after some things that he doesn't think the future protagonist will miss much. He also ends up buying stuff from HHP, since they're willing to sell things like spiritual tools and weapons if the price is right, whereas most other sects like Cang Qiong reserve them for members only.
They get an invitation to the Immortal Alliance Conference. Not the one where the Abyss opens up, obviously, the one where (originally) Shen Jiu reunited with Yue Qi and killed Wu Yanzi. Shen Yuan debates on going but the boys really want to, and things have calmed down enough that no one's trying to burn down the school whenever he leaves these days, so eventually he figures it'll be interesting to see some of the Cang Qiong characters and should be safe enough if he keeps his disciples close.
They don't run into young Yue Qingyuan or Shen Qingqiu on the trip, but Wu Yanzi does show up and get killed, and SY only hears about it and assumes they just missed all that action. (WYZ just got caught by some senior cultivators who recognized him and killed him to avenge some disciples he murdered.) Nephew and Little Yue do meet young Liu Qingge, Shang Qinghua, Mu Qingfang, and Su Xiyan though! Which gives Shen Yuan the opportunity to tell them all (mostly Su Xiyan) that if they're ever in trouble near his school, they can come to him for help. Hint hint.
This open invitation ends up being accepted broadly by a lot of traveling cultivators after the conference, who from then on treat Shen Yuan's school like a free motel whenever they're passing through. Plenty aren't even people SY met, but it seems his statement was taken as a general one to fellow righteous cultivators all around! Luckily, this has some advantages. Shen Yuan has no qualms running off anyone who tries to take unfair advantage of him or especially his kids or staff, and no shame in conscripting anyone who is decent enough to help teach his students, even if it's nothing to do with cultivating, and somehow word gets around and people start bringing school supplies, medicine, food, or other useful things along with them as gifts to help repay the hospitality. Young Liu Qingge comes by a lot on his way to and from various quests, or even seems to just turn up randomly sometimes (he comes to challenge YQ and SJ to fights), and SY's just like "I guess this is happening now" and teaches him to recognize the early signs of qi deviation and advises strongly against meditating in caves.
At one point a young Shang Qinghua turns up in one of the spare rooms, very obviously hiding an ice demon. Shen Yuan again is just like "I guess this is happening now" and shelters them until Mobei Jun has recovered, and sends a message to Cang Qiong that one of their An Ding caravans was attacked and their disciple is recovering under his roof but isn't well enough to travel yet. Much less stressful situation for Airplane (who is desperately trying to figure out what he did to manifest SJ's benevolent uncle from somewhere???)
Su Xiyan seems like the only person they met at the Immortal Alliance Conference who doesn't turn up at their door in a state of emergency at some point.
A few years later, there is a big scandal involving her and the demon emperor. Su Xiyan disappears, Huan Hua Palace accuses Tianlang Jun of plotting against the righteous sects, and Shen Yuan is even invited to the meeting where they try and rally everyone to go kill Binghe's dad. Naturally, he declines to participate in the witch hunt, but the major sects agree to it. By luck (or narrative fortune) Shen Yuan comes across Zhuzhi Lang on his trip back home, and mentions the ambush and his distaste for it (not knowing who ZZL is). ZZL warns Tianlang Jun and the confrontation goes very differently, especially since there's no Yue Qingyuan wielding Xuan Su.
It doesn't go well for the sects involved. Huan Hua Palace gets decimated. The Old Palace Master gets killed. Shen Yuan is like uhhhh that's... whoops? Didn't Luo Binghe need that in the future?? Fuck.
But the sect isn't wiped out completely, they just take a massive beating. Some of their younger disciples end up leaving and turning up on Shen Yuan's doorstep, for some reason. The manor house is becoming too small to account for all of these foundlings! They have to expand. Though the expansions would be a stretch to term a "palace" they end up occupying a much larger chunk of territory, and even investing in farmland and some storehouses to help support the sect. That's still not really a sect, of course. Even if a lot of the business that would have normally gone to Huan Hua Palace starts coming to them instead. Once HHP is back on its feet the stream will probably dry out. Probably?
Zhuzhi Lang starts hanging around. He's actually looking for Su Xiyan or their baby, dead or alive and per Tianlang Jun's instructions, but he uses Shen Yuan's school as base camp for his kind of hopeless efforts to find any traces of them, while also looking for ways to try and repay Shen Yuan. All the kids are just like "oh great, another weird man has fallen in love with Shizun -- someone go run interference" about it.
Some years later, an older woman and her young son turn up. Shen Yuan's off on a quest at the time, so SJ receives them. As is standard procedure he gives the woman a job and places the boy in classes, after giving him the aptitude tests. The kid is cute and precocious, so SJ uses him to distract YQ while he himself sneaks out to go join LQG on a monster hunt (and claim the valuable parts of the beast's remains for himself), and neither SY nor ZZL notice anything until SY's going over the paperwork for stuff he missed while he was gone. Since he procrastinated, it takes him like a week to find out that Luo Binghe is finally under his roof. He's going over the admission form right when SJ arrives with The New Adorable Child to try and distract SY enough that SY will let him go on a solo hunt -- as far as being distracted goes, it is way more effective than even SJ anticipated.
Then he has to figure out how to let ZZL know, so that ZZL can let Tianlang Jun know, so that Luo Binghe will have more family than just his mom and more resources than just a shabby little not-sect! But even once he figures it out and sets up the dramatic reveal, TLJ is just like "great! so can he just stay with you? he's probably fine there" which... irritates SY.
SJ fully conscripts Luo Binghe as a minion in his many cons. He never lost his street kid conman tactics, although he now uses them less as a ruthless survival tool or weapon and more to just get things to go his own way. LBH has the face and disposition of a little angel, which SJ no longer can pull off as a full grown adult, so he fills a gap. LBH also knows full well what's going, especially since a lot of SJ's tactics involve throwing LBH at SY like a smoke bomb.
Luo Binghe inevitably still develops a big fat crush on SY, so this is fine by him. Especially when he gets older, he starts bringing SY tea and making him breakfast and running his errands until even SJ is like "wait a minute, this little brat's stealing my job!" and by then it's too late. Luo Binghe is SY's personal assistant, the disciple at conman puppydog eyes has surpassed the master! While SJ was busy being like "I'm going to trick this idiot into doing my chores" LBH was going "I'm going to trick this idiot into giving me his job".
SY takes too long to officially name his school so everyone calls it the Shen Sect, much to his embarrassment.

You know what? Screw all the other ‘svss from *important person*’s perspective’. I want the entire plot of scum villain from Ming Fan’s perspective. I want to witness first hand the confusion of why his Shizun suddenly decided that he liked Luo Binghe. I want to see him watch the short little kid he used to kick around grow up to be the most powerful being in the three realms AND his shizun’s husband.
Could you imagine the mental gymnastics this kid had to go through to understand how Shen Qingqiu went from treating Luo Binghe like dirt, to praising him all the time? Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if Ming Fan wasn’t a little insane by the end of it all.

I was talking with someone the other day and it got me thinking about something.
I generally run with the idea that part of the reason why Luo Binghe became THE target for Shen Qingqiu's abuse was because Shen Qingqiu fell for the 'white sheep' routine. Like, it was a lot of things all together: coming to the sect at an unfortunate time (Shen Qingqiu was in a mental health freefall because he was at a bottleneck and struggling to form his core, and here comes Luo Binghe with his perfect aptitude who's expected to blitz through all of the hurdles Shen Qingqiu sweated blood to scale), the pettiness he felt towards Liu Qingge when he picked Luo Binghe out (another bitter association), Luo Binghe having Ning Yingying right away as a friend and support (who stuck with him even against her shizun's orders!!) when Shen Qingqiu was all alone, the jealousy that however briefly Luo Binghe had a loving mother
and the crown jewel on this cake was that Luo Binghe, despite having suffered the death of a loved one and poverty on the streets, still seemed like a naive little ray of sunshine. And no matter what Shen Qingqiu does to him, he remains pathetic and vulnerable in the way that makes kinder people want to take care of him and protect him.
Shen Qingqiu is not a kind man and he knows intimately that the world isn't kind either. Not to pathetic children who don't grow up with the power of a rich family to put them somewhere safe where they can become pathetic, maybe well-meaning maybe not adults. To him it's the harbinger of failure.
The Luo Binghe he sees after picking him up is not smart, not crafty in the way he expects a street kid to be. He's not driven (wanting to make his late mother proud... motivation like that ought to fade with the memories. In four or five years Luo Binghe won't even recall the face or voice of his beloved mother and then Shen Qingqiu will be left with a child with no drive whatsoever). All Luo Binghe has going for him is his bright eyed optimism and his servile nature (which cannot, should not last in a cultivator) and his exceptional aptitude, which is useless on its own.
I struggle to believe that Luo Binghe was the first on the peak who was naturally talented (Shen Qingqiu's ruined cultivation base put him so far behind that even with his hard work, he lagged behind Shang Qinghua whose cultivation is mediocre at best). Or the first to have a support network of friends or a loving family. And as much as Shen Qingqiu resented them for having these gifts that he didn’t, he never tried to destroy them the way he tried to destroy Luo Binghe.
Luo Binghe has all the tools of greatness and the hallmarks of failure all in one and it's that combination that triggers Shen Qingqiu's hate. Shen Qingqiu, in his rush to spite Liu Qingge, picked up trash that glitters. He can never admit to this mistake, so he decides that he's going to drive off Luo Binghe or destroy him, whichever happens first, because he can't imagine being stuck with this, this... pathetic little beast. One way or another, he will get rid of him before he can become a stain on Shen Qingqiu's reputation.
And we know how all of that turned out...
But what if he did see through it. Luo Binghe slipped up in his introduction and Shen Qingqiu immediately saw him for the white lotus that he was.
Shen Qingqiu knows the world, he knows its monsters and its beasts. So he looks at this child (not as weak and battered from his life on the street as others, the promise of strength and a bright future written in his meridians) pretending to be small and weak and pathetic and he's terrified.
Only the most dangerous predators pretend to be prey. He took a cuckoo into his nest, he accepted a wolf into his flock. Now it's his job to deal with it, before it grows fangs and bites the hand that feeds it.
He doesn't trust his martial siblings to listen to him on this, to hear him (unpleasant and sharp and biting, hated and hateful) out over the little beast (teary eyed and pathetic, pretty little thing you want to take home and keep safe).
He always did hide his fear the best with hate.
He will wear down this intruder until he can find out what his goal is and destroy him, before the beast can destroy them first.
It's almost a relief, when Luo Binghe stands on the edge of the abyss, his sheepskin torn and staring at him with the resentful eyes of a demon. It's the one moment when he doesn't hate Luo Binghe; he is a demon who will act as a demon does, as is his nature.
Pushing him into oblivion is
relief.

BATTLE FOR 3RD PLACE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Luo Binghe/Shen Qingqiu (Scum Villains Self Saving System) vs Franky/Nico Robin (One Piece)
Propaganda under the cut!
Luo Binghe/Shen Qingqiu (SVSSS):
Shen Qingqiu has been in love with Binghe since before he even knew he was gay, the man thought he was straight reading a stallion novel full of smut, just for Binghe, and Binghe decided that if he couldn’t have SQQ that he would destroy the entire world. When SQQ died he kept his body around just in case and had to fight people off almost daily so that he could keep it around, man went full feral about it. They are so insane about each other.
Franky/Nico Robin (One Piece):
Robin fell first, Franky fell harder.
Franky learns about Robin almost a decade before they meet. He learns that she is the key for the destruction of the world. She is dangerous but he (and his adopted brother) have the answer to counter the dangerous knowledge Robin has.
When they finally meet Franky thinks she killed his brother, still thinks she deserves to live and is willing to give up his own life so Robin can survive. Also because her friends are willing to fight the World Government to save her too. A bunch of kids make him believe that the most dangerous woman is worthy of rescue. Also: Fuck The Police!
Compared to that Robin knows nothing about Franky. All she knows is that this weird dude she never met before is helping her, telling her that “Living is not a sin” and constantly telling her that her friends are going to save her.
She sees him biting, kicking, blowing up his ass and risking his life multiple times for her, without knowing why he would do that.
They manage to flee from that situation and return to safety, together. Later, when it’s time to leave Franky’s home island and flee from the marines, the crew decides to steal his panties and lure him to the ship he built for them. Basically he is running across the city butt-naked. But being the stubborn fool he is, says he can’t leaven even though it’s his dream.
Robin decides enough is enough and squeezes his balls as a way to make him join the crew. In all translations she says that pirates can’t leave a treasure behind, calling him a treasure.
All of this is canon. And Robin calling Franky a treasure is why I think Robin fell first.
Franky fell harder when he finally understood that Robin wants him. And that even more after the timeskip.
- He calls her beautiful
- Praises her drawing skills
- Praises her being smart
- Worries about her when she faints
- Is allowed to sleep with his head on her lap
- Protects her from stones raining down
- Meets with her to secret dates
- Just overall supportive (Parts are canon, parts are fanon)
Sorry for any mistakes and I hope it makes sense!

posting more svsss fanart this time half finished doodles of a lil au that’s been cooking in my brain for a few weeks
fox shen yuan aus have my heart and soul anyways he gains more tails the higher his cultivation is :33
plot points for this below the cut (also apologies for the terrible image quality she’s been through a lot (my google drive))
- shen yuan is a fox demon, he gets popped into a very young fox demon similar to how airplane gets dropped into baby shang qinghua (airplane is sqh in this au but that’s not plot relevant yet)
- little fox shen yuan, still getting the hang of his powers and creating a human form, runs into shen jiu in the woods, realizes this “random” teenager looks a lot like he did in real life, and unconsciously shifts to look like him
- shen yuan and shen jiu become kind of friends (in that shen jiu feels like he needs to protect shen yuan because he thinks he’s naive and also thinks it’s funny when he’s a bitch and shen yuan also thinks that shen jiu is funny when he’s a bitch and that he should probably keep this kid from dying or screwing himself up with his clearly demonic cultivation too bad)
- shen yuan eventually figures out how to look fully human (prior to him and sj going to cang qiong mountain)
- sy and sj become disciples on qing jing together! how does shen yuan cultivate? well sj is the only one who knows he’s a demon but they manage to swipe a fox demon cultivation manual from qing jing peak’s library for him
- when the qing generation ascends shen yuan leaves cang qiong to go be a wandering cultivator and write a bestiary
(at this point you may be asking, where is zhuzhi-lang? he’s in the doodles, why hasn’t he shown up yet? fear not, he is coming)
- while traveling shen yuan decide that the mortal realm is too boring and there are far too many papapa plants there so he travels to the demon realm to record more beasts
- at this point tianlang-jun is still the emperor of the demon realm, and, through shenanigans probably, shen yuan manages to save zhuhai-lang from a rather dangerous plant that mimics normal demonic plants and gets introduced to the emperor
- it does not take long for shen yuan to realize that this is luo binghe’s father and decide, hey, maybe he can help this guy and hopefully get both of luo binghe’s parents to survive so he can have a kind of normal life without the trauma (he is still masquerading as a human at this point and there’s quite a bit of controversy about the demonic emperor taking advice from a human cultivator, linguang-jun later mocks mobei-jun for ‘following in the late emperor’s footsteps’ when he takes shang qinghua as his primary advisor)
- this plan does not work, shen yuan is exposed to the cultivation world as a demon and a traitor and gets his ass tossed into the endless abyss so he can’t warn zzl and tlj about the plot against them
- (shen jiu goes to see him before he gets sent in: “why’d you do it?” “i… i wanted to try and let them (su xiyan and tianlang-jun) be happy together…”)
- sy is stuck in the abyss making himself a little house and strong arming the various horrors down there into liking him
- cut to shen jiu, now shen qingqiu, extremely bitter about the fact that the only person he considered a friend betraying him the cultivation world, and seeing baby binghe who looks just like the guy his friend got tossed into the the abyss for and figures out that this must have been what shen yuan was trying to protect
- shen qingqiu is livid and takes it out on binghe
- yet another cut, we know what bingge’s childhood was like, and binghe’s gets dropped into the abyss (sqq thinks that it’s fitting he sends the beast to the same fate that trying to protect him doomed shen yuan to)
- binghe wanders the abyss, being miserable, for several years before he comes across… a house? the bamboo house from qing jing peak? is he hallucinating? but no, it’s not quite the same, it’s made with whatever freaky bamboo equivalent grows in the abyss and there’s a pen with a six-legged carnivorous horse around the side of it
- shen yuan built himself a version of the bamboo house because he really liked it and he helped build shen qingqiu’s bamboo house as a sort of present/congratulations for ascending to peak lord status and he wanted a comfortable place to relax where he’s less likely to be attacked by a beast
- binghe is very confused when he is enthusiastically greeted by a fox demon who looks like his scummy teacher but is rather quickly endeared and intrigued
- they bond, shen yuan helps binghe find xin mo and they get out of the abyss and into the demon realm together with shen yuan acting as an advisor for binghe similarly to how he did with tlj, with the condition that binghe helps him release tlj and zzl from their prison
- this is the main catalyst for them going to huan hua in this au (most people have forgotten what sy looks like or they were too young to remember his trial even happening, it wasn’t anything super public because publicity for the great sects is very important so they kept things very hush hush)
- shen yuan reunites with zhuzhi-lang and tianlang-jun! it takes them a while to figure out how to properly break them out but they do manage it!
- at some point in the demon realm shen yuan and shang qinghua run into each other and clock that the other person is a transmigrator pretty quickly (they both have a habit of muttering in chinglish during court and they hear each other and do the spider-man point meme)
- sqh and sy bond and binghe and mbj don’t exactly know if they should be jealous about it, they’re very close and seem to share some sort of strange dialect that only the two of them speak and spend a lot of time together?? (they’re arguing and maybe kissing a little bc… cumplane my loves)
- shen yuan eventually has the misfortune of running into liu qingge (who survives here because i love him and i think that sy would at least try to prevent his death because he found him endearing when they were disciples), while sy is delighted that his shidi is alive he’s less happy about having cheng luan pointed directly at his throat in a secluded alleyway when he was just trying to browse the market of a town he remembered being pleasant
- reuniting with lqg leads to reuniting with the rest of cang qiong (and getting yelled at for his incompetence by shen qingqiu before they make up)
- shen yuan has (just barely) convinced binghe that torture is not the answer to solving his trauma so shen qingqiu does not get water prisoned but they aren’t trusted alone in a room together for a good long time
- eventually this probably ends in shen yuan collecting a harem on accident (not that he’s very upset about it but still, he’s confused how he managed this)
- neither binghe nor shen qingqiu are particularly pleased about the harem thing but like… they love shen yuan and if it makes him happy they’ll put up with these other idiots (they totally don’t like some of the other harem members what are you talking about? there’s nothing going on there stop asking them about it)

The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System is a story about being unlovable and self-perception and the tragedy of a self-fulfilling prophecy.
It's about a story that Shang Qinghua writes, about this kind of damage being passed down from one generation to the next, and the man himself reflects these issues directly, yes, but they seep out into the entire universe he creates. At the beginning, this was the story he wrote, cut off and left adrift and quietly rejected by his own family, in an attempt to scrape by. In the original draft, Binghe would have been left alone and immortal, never truly loved, with everyone he tried to grasp and keep slipping through his fingers as he was the only one left, with his surroundings reflecting his inner emptiness. But then, Shang Qinghua lost that first draft, and he's left with a rushed, sexed-up story that's financially successful in a way that he knows the original story he wanted to share never would have been. It's about feeling certain that nobody actually wants who you really are, and watching that inner feeling come true around you.
Because this story is about Shen Jiu too. Nobody embodies this tragedy as viscerally as Shen Jiu does, and it's telling that his backstory is one of the critical elements of that lost story than Shang Qinghua never actually got to write. He starts out as a slave kid on the streets, he has no value as a person and is aware of that, and pours everything he has into his relationship with Qi-ge. By everyone else, his confidence and ambition are treated as punchlines, whether he's a toy/pet to the Qiu family, or a tool to his scam artist master after making his escape. But it's deciding that Qi-ge abandoned him that really locks this damage into place. There's nothing Yue Qingyuan can give him that will convince him that the gift is the result of care, rather than guilt. There's no achievement that makes him feel secure. It becomes a tragic feedback loop where his standoffishness and abrasiveness damage his interpersonal relationships to the point where in an ambiguous situation, he's offered less and less credit, until he's simply handed over to a torturer. And it's a situation that was built, in part, by his own actions, because he passed a lot of his own pain down to Luo Binghe.
Luo Binghe's situation is the most textual, in the story we get. He was set adrift in a river moments after being born, where he would have died if not for a fortunate rescue. Even after being adopted, it was a difficult childhood. His mother loved him, but she was torn away while he was still young. And Shen Jiu was a teacher who chose him, but then was particularly and viciously cruel to him. Even in the novel timeline, when Shen Yuan gets thrown into the picture and starts pampering him as soon as he can get away with it, a lot of damage has already been done. The abyss plot point does more, and Shen Qingqiu's fear of his canon fate does more and more. Binghe has been internalizing these rejections from the start. He's not interested in hearing about his birth parents until he's forced to listen, and the cracks show multiple times, right on the page, when he speaks about how nobody would ever want him, or choose him. Even after Shen Qingqiu has made it very clear how much he cares and is willing to sacrifice on his sake (which is a whole other kettle of worms, binghe's decreasing ability to cope with people (shen qingqiu) being hurt for the sake of protecting him, and his growing certainty that caring about him is something intrinsically harmful to others), even after Shen Qingqiu leaves Cang Qiong with him, Binghe barely manages to propose marriage before scrambling to backtrack, because it's not something he can conceptualize having for himself, and he's terrified that it's too much to ask.
But it's interesting that Shang Qinghua's struggles are drawn out for arguably the longest. He has a rough time of it, in both his lives. Even after making it into Cang Qiong Mountain Sect on his transmigration adventure, as the author of the universe in question, he's still shunted off into the most overworked and underappreciated of the peaks. Him hurling himself into shameless begging to survive dangerous situations like meeting Mobei-jun is a more clever characterization than I think it appears at first. And it's funny, right? But it becomes more and more of a sad kind of funny as we get all the way into the extras, and he's totally clueless that Mobei-jun is placing his entire life in Shang Qinghua's hands until it's already happened and they're both in an incredibly dangerous situation. Now, some of this is definitely on Mobei-jun, who is hilariously bad at communication, even in this cast of clowns, but it's also really sad that Shang Qinghua wrote his ideal man, and is confident that this person wouldn't even give someone like Shang Qinghua the time of day. It does genuinely move me that Mobei-jun still fell hard for him, but in a really sad, upsetting way, if that makes sense? And even after Mobei-jun has (barely-verbally) been like 'I trust you above anyone else to protect me when my uncle comes to kill me, and I'm so confident in your abilities that I don't think I even need to explain myself,' afterwards, when Shang Qinghua runs off, he's shocked when Mobei-jun comes looking for him.
I adore how often cnovels include extras after the end of the story proper, but my relationship with the svsss ones is odd, because most of them just emotionally shred me, and I finish the experience on a more melancholy note than I would have initially expected. We get all of Shang Qinghua's personal context and experiences in this part, it's where we get the marriage proposal, and it's got all of Shen Jiu's pov sections. It's also got Zhuzhi-lang, another character who either disappeared in the lost draft or who Shang Qinghua never wrote, who embodies this lack of self-worth even more bluntly than the others, and it's got the universe crossover with canon!binghe, who's still grasping after the experience of being loved, but is gripping so hard that he squeezes the life out of the relationships he tries to keep. These ideas are important in the story proper, but the extras are what take the idea of 'it's silly to think that i would ever be loved' and go after it like a dog with a squeaky toy. Seeing this crop up for one character would be fun, seeing it come up so many times, including for the author character himself, is intentional.

For various reasons i constantly think about how I want a scum villain musical thats basically what if you gave the book to starkid in terms of tone and vibe. I have very few requirements other than the entire play the joke is Shang Qinghua is the narrator and he is constantly holding the actual script in his hand and will in fact pull people aside to tell them you're off key or that's not the right line. The joke here is the play is supposed to be a faithful retailing of pidw but Shen Yuan is the only other actor who acknowledges this is a play and decides to flip the script to make a better ending. It's a whole play within a play thing.
There is a song that basically is "all you gotta do is hit that kid!🎶"
A 'im a mushroom man' song
And the cliff scene is a heart wrenching duet.
Binghe has his harem girls sing about how they're glad that he's gay
Tentpole number in the abyss where binghe does a solo rock song about taking the world so he can take one man
And of course a song about fucking over the system and being ooc
For the obvious limits a stage play presents the climax is that the Binghe wants to do a romantic duet. An ultimate symbol in theatre that they are meant to be and the melody is the underlying score of the whole play and prior to the tragic duet anytime the two sing it is not together and then they gay sing but Binghe goes so high in the notes and virbrato it kills
Just a song about big dick and maybe even loving it
I think of this all the time. Constantly. I want this adaptation so bad. I don't even want it to be like a full adapt of the book. I want it to satire musical genre conventions in the same way the book does harems and isekais. It just... Feels like the perfect bad idea

Brain Overflow
You know how in my last 'state of the author' post I said I could feel the urge to write coming back?
Oh, it has.
It's terribly inconvenient too. I'm going to tell you a little about some of the things I've been thinking of and then whine/wibble a tiny bit if you click through to behind the cut. (You don't have to read the last bit!)
I've written down three different SVSSS (LiuShen) ideas in the last couple of weeks, added a few thoughts to older ideas, made a mental note of possible Cultivate extras, and just refused to write down others so as not to encourage rampant plot bunny breeding.
But let me tell you about a few of them because I'm hoping it reduces the urge to work on them better than just typing up notes.
The Lady Blackbird fusion Not sure what Lady Blackbird is? Well, it's a free tabletop rpg that you can download here. But the TL;DR is, "Sort of like steampunk Star Wars: A New Hope + Firefly + potential Jane Austen novel, if you want." I'll just C&P the pitch here: Lady Blackbird is an Imperial noble fleeing from an arranged marriage to be with her secret lover, the pirate king Uriah Flint. To reunite with him, she has hired a notorious smuggler and the crew of his skyship, The Owl. However, The Owl has been captured by an Imperial cruiser. How will Lady Blackbird and the others escape? What dangers lie in their path on the way to the pirate king’s lair? Can you see where this is going? (Actually, probably not your first thought, no.) We start with Shen Yuan transmigrated in a xianxia-by-way-of-steampunk gown, sitting in a jail cell with several men, a teenage boy, and a veiled teenage girl. System helpfully informs him that he is now "Lady" Blackbird, on the run to end up in the arms of Pirate King Mobei-Jun. His cell-mates are, as follows: Smuggler Captain Liu Qingge, Lady Blackbird's personal bodyguard Liu Mingyan who suggested her brother when LB said she wanted to escape, the ship's mechanic Shang Qinghua, the ship's doctor Mu Qingfang (or they pick him up later, I haven't decided), and "a goblin named BingBing". While SY is busy freaking out that System can't fool him - that's the Protagonist, Luo Binghe!!! wtf!!! System says "later, loser" and more-or-less abandons him (though still employing an OOC ban). So now you can probably see where this is going, lol. It involves at least a brief period where SY has to crossdress and pretend to be one of Binghe's future wives - a fiancée/wife of Mobei-Jun as Liu Qingge gets very conflicted feelings about his troublesome passenger. Featuring lots of Cumplane friendship, sassy MQF (as a treat), teenage smirking (likely aided and abetted by the adults), and space whales (naturally). I have not yet fully decided if the story Shen Yuan read was PIDW and now he has to figure out how the infiltration of "space with gears on it" into his xianxia has fucked up what he and Airplane know, or if the story was something like "Proud Immortal Starlit Way" and it was always like that. (Thoughts?) ---
The "SY Bodysnatches MQF" idea What it says on the tin... SY accidentally ends up in MQF's body instead of SQQ's. Only MQF isn't gone - he remains. This occurs directly before the Demonic Invasion and double qi deviation part of the plot and they rush back to the sect to deal with that. Then things get messy while they conspire to get SY his own body. Featuring: An extremely confused Liu Qingge, eventual Shenbros, and aro-ace MQF being very bemused at all times. ---
The "LQG Gets De-Aged/Age-Regressed" idea As you can guess: LQG gets age-regressed. This happens in Lingxi Caves instead of his death-by-deviation. He latches onto SY-SQQ and SY-SQQ is helpless to do anything but take the cute kid in. Featuring: BingLiu friendship, possibly Bing-other disciples friendship, but mostly establishing bro-code that makes Binghe switch his infatuation with SY-SQQ into family feelings as soon as LQG regains his adult body and it becomes clear that LiuShen is happening. ----
This is along with: Joint Custody (LiuShen), my SJ-SQQ second-chance redemption fic (LiuShen and LiuJiu, but different LQGs), a peak lords ascension fic using Cultivate's backstory (LiuJiu), a LiuShen timeloop fic, and at least another half a dozen fic ideas sitting in the hopper that aren't nearly as developed/that I am not burning to write yet.
I'd love to know which ideas you guys are most interested in. ;) Joint Custody is still next regardless and I'll probably not be working on either of the LiuJiu fics in the near future because they are definitely 100k+ territory and I'm still not ready for that. But knowing people are hype for something keeps me hype. ;3
I'll probably be in this fandom awhile, y'all. Please send help.
Sadly, I can't work on any of them yet, because I have over 2,600 messages in my inbox waiting for me to respond to. (This is not a humble brag - this is thousand-yard-stare territory. It was somewhere over 3000 for awhile until I started making a list of people who generally only left emojis or thanks and let them know that I was going to just thank them for all of them in one email so they didn't peppered by replies in kind.)
Not that I'm complaining about them, because I missed replying to comments so much (it's genuinely one of my favorite parts about writing fanfic), but it's still a lot and even if I could manage 100 replies a day (which for mental health reasons, I really can't), it's going to take awhile.
RIP.
More importantly - I hope you are well! 🌼

Thinking through the misconception that Shen Yuan is a self-serving individual who spends most of his time as Shen Qingqiu doing what he can with the motivation of “saving his own skin,” thereby negating his acts of kindness as innately selfish, and how this is all wrong. When he first transmigrates and finds out that, rather than it being at the beginning of the novel, he is more than halfway through Luo Binghe’s disciple arc, he panics:
That meant that at this point, this master and this disciple, Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe, had already passed the incident at the mountain entrance. There, the latter had been forced to kneel as punishment.
It meant they had also passed the incident where Luo Binghe’s fellow Qing Jing Peak disciples had pummeled him en masse, as well as the incident where he’d “backtalked” Shizun and been strung up and beaten, in addition to the incident where he’d ruined the peak’s talismans and been punished with hard labor... Such a glorious track record.
(Shen Qingqiu waved goodbye to his last hope of survival.)
—Chapt. 1: Scum, official
Luo Binghe had already been a Qing Jing Peak disciple for four years, all of which he had been subjected to horrific abuse at the hands of Shen Jiu. Shen Yuan is well aware of this and clearly believes that everything that Shen Jiu has done to Luo Binghe is already enough to damn him to an early, vengeance-fulfilling grave. Despite thinking that his death was predestined, though, he spends the entire time that the OOC function is frozen fighting with his system about being kind to Luo Binghe, showing kindness to the boy multiple times and arguing after the fact that he should not be punished by the system for acting in such a way. In a way, he is already courting death via system by fighting against his system to be kind with all the risk and no benefits, since he keeps his acts a secret from everyone, most of all Luo Binghe, his would-be murderer. It is only after the OOC function is unfrozen that he decides to enact his plan of “earning a less painful death” by overtly being kind to Luo Binghe. So while it is clear that Shen Yuan thinks his kindness is only a cosmetic salve, not a solution that will save him, he still chooses to show kindness to Luo Binghe at imminent risk to himself.
Mind you, though, we’ve only covered Shen Yuan’s actions and intentions towards Luo Binghe, not counting all the times Shen Yuan was life-changingly kind to “meaningless” side characters. His motivation for redirecting Ming Fan’s anger from Luo Binghe was that he didn’t want the boy to die a needless death just so that the plot could give Luo Binghe another chance to flex. His kindness towards Gongyi Xiao who Shen Yuan thought was guaranteed a good (albeit banished) ending was purely borne from the fact that he liked the kid (and also a little bit from him reminding Shen Yuan of Luo Binghe), and it was enough to get Gongyi Xiao to turn against his own sect to protect Shen Qingqiu. And not only did he stop Gongyi Xiao from killing the snake hybrid demon they found in Bai Lu Forest—even though it would have been expected of them as cultivators—he even left a magic mushroom for him, paving the way for Tianjun’s and Zhuzhi-lang’s reemergence into the narrative. Shen Yuan doesn’t do any of these things with the intent to change the narrative. He does them because they were kind things to do, and it is that selfless kindness that changes pidw into the world of svsss.
All this to say: from the very beginning of the novel, Shen Yuan is introduced as a character whose transmigration is meant to bring humanity into the aloof, abusive Qing Jing Peak Lord Shen Qingqiu, thereby injecting kindness into the story where there had previously only been cruelty, and he is shown to be the perfect man for the job as someone who is willing to put himself at risk to do good. This is why it is Shen Yuan and not Shen Jiu who is able to save the world pidw and it’s protagonist from their original destructive trajectory.

Okay readers, just imagine Luo Binghe and Shen Yuan vacationing in a modern world... in Japan...
(Oh, imagine if this is Luo Bingge and the Shen Yuan that he's kidnapped from the modern world to live in PIDW and this is now the couple after 50 years of marriage. Naturally Shen Yuan's gotten dicked enough to achieve immortality or at leave a very very high level of cultivation.)
Luo Binghe insists that his husband can be a stay at home trophy husband (or he can be the trophy husband!) but Shen Qingqiu insists that he'll contribute to the household!
By working!
As a teacher!
Even though they have decided to be in Japan for Reasons (cough Shen Qingqiu going through 100 years worth of anime and manga in the span of one year thanks to the fact that he needs no sleep or food, no matter how much Luo Binghe cries, some things are indeed more Important).
(Yes, Shen Qingqiu only talks about becoming a teacher in Japan after he finished checking out all the trashfire anime and manga so quickly. Then he decided that he needed to get close to some teenagers to find the real gems.)
Okay, this is just a very long intro and explanation to me wanting to have Shen Qingqiu teach at Ouran High School.
And then Luo Binghe meets the hosts club kids and Shen Yuan Regrets Everything (and nothing at once).
[More in #Shen Qingqiu teaches at Ouran High School AU]

disciple luo binghe, running errands for his shizun one day, somehow manages to be in the exact wrong (right) place at the exact wrong (right) time and catches shang qinghua meeting with mobei jun
in order to keep luo binghe from tattling right away, shang qinghua dissembles in a panic and claims that his clandestine meetings with mobei jun are happening because they're lovers and definitely not because shang qinghua is betraying the sect and handing their secrets over to demons in order to save his own hide. when that almost doesn't work, he also tells luo binghe that he knows he's part demon, and that if luo binghe rats him out then shang qinghua will take him down with him. mutually assured destruction
it works, and even though luo binghe threatens him quite a bit (jeez kid calm down, you might be the almighty protagonist but also you're like sixteen) he agrees to keep shang qinghua's fraternizing a secret. but if ANYTHING BAD should happen to the sect or especially to luo binghe's shizun because of this, luo binghe will take shang qinghua down even if it does ruin his life too
shang qinghua, now sweating even more bullets about the impending immortal alliance conference: cool! cool cool cool sounds great cool yeah
so shang qinghua can add "being blackmailed by the punk ass brat I sort of created" to his list of stress-inducing woes. which gets even worse when luo binghe keeps somehow sensing if mobei jun is around for more than a couple hours and showing up, and picking fights with him?? kind of??
wtf has the protagonist been taking tips from liu qingge or something...?
shang qinghua feels like he's gonna have a heart attack when mobei jun just snorts and tosses luo binghe by the scruff like he's an annoying yappy dog
mobei jun actually knows what's up though. teenage half-demon who has never been around his own kind has become spoiled by the lack of competition on this front, and now his hackles are all up because he wants to claim the whole mountain range as his territory, and his instincts are screaming at him to challenge mobei jun about it so that they can decide who is actually top dog. since mobei jun could easily kill him, especially with his blood sealed, and has been clawing rocks and pissing on trees along the borders of an ding peak since before luo binghe was born, he's clearly got seniority here
and since qinghua doesn't want mobei jun to just kill the little shit (fair enough -- that sealed bloodline does look kind of interesting) that means it's up to mobei jun to teach him how to do things like interact with other demons without making a complete fool of himself. lesson one: what to do when you challenge someone out of your league and they win, assuming they don't just kill you
so luo binghe reluctantly gains another demon tutor
meng mo actually approves. he's been out of the loop on demon high society for a long time, and has lacked a body for long enough too that he's forgotten a lot of the particulars of socializing. it'll be good for luo binghe to pick up some manners that aren't just silly human tea ceremonies and things. maybe he'll start addressing meng mo more respectfully for a change!
(lol no)
luo binghe is partly like "I don't need to learn demon social skills since I'm spending the rest of my life as a disciple of qing jing peak" but partly like, well, if shizun knew about this and didn't freak out about it, he'd probably say that knowledge is power and learning how to handle politics and diplomacy of all kinds is important. and despite himself luo binghe is also interested, because this is a whole perspective on his own nature that he's never really gotten advice about
also, mobei jun is the lover of shang qinghua? mobei jun is a demon who successfully seduced a cang qiong peak lord? does he have any advice about that?
(he does -- all of it very bad)
anyway all of this sort of fucks up the immortal alliance conference developments really good, so the system kind of gives up and settles on some other big transformative achievements that luo binghe has to complete in order to be suitably heroic
but shen qingqiu has no idea and so the reprieve just seems to come out of nowhere until several years later, when he walks in on luo binghe with his claws out and huadian gleaming in the company the demon king of the northern desert, the two of them playing weiqi or something while they wait for shang qinghua to get back from some random logistics crisis he had to rush off to
shen qingqiu: ...?!?
luo binghe, panicking: wait shizun I can explain it's not what it looks like SHIZUN I SWEAR I WAS GOING TO TELL YOU PLEASE DON'T BE MAD--!
shen qingqiu: all this time I thought you were sneaking out to meet a girl, and this was what you were doing instead?!
luo binghe: WHAT?? shizun no I'd never do that I swear I don't even like girls!
shen qingqiu: that's not -- wait what do you mean you don't even like girls?!
mobei jun, unperturbed and still focused on the weiqi board: he's gay

✩ WEEKLY FIC ROUND-UP ✩
All the fics I’ve read and really enjoyed in the past week-ish. Reminder: This list features any and all ratings and themes.
ATLA
illustrate the remnants of the life i used to live by WitchofEndor
Zuko's soul marks have been regularly burned away since before he knew what they meant. He knows that he cannot be loyal to his father and his nation while also being loyal to a soul family, so he doesn't look for them. Unfortunately, that means that he doesn't know when he's found them.
Stranger things
Shovel Talks by unkreativstermensch (+ podfic)
"Oh,” Steve says. Then again, “oh,” a little quieter. His expression changes; from confusion to something pained almost. “Mr Munson, I don’t…” he takes a deep breath, his voice a little shaky as he continues. “I don’t think he…I don’t think he likes me like that.”
He doesn’t say “it’s not like that.” Neither does he say “I’m not like that.”
That’s the first thing Wayne notices.
or: Wayne decides to give Steve the shovel talk, only to realize he might not be the one needing one
Peaceful Bliss by unkreativstermensch
"Henderson,” Eddie groans. “Do you have any idea what time it is?" He rubs his hands over his face. Dustin nods.
"Of course, it’s 6:15, but we need to talk, it's really urgent, I noticed something about the-" he stops in his tracks when he notices the patch of hair next to Eddie, sticking out from under the covers and in between pillows, and the way Eddie winces because Dustin's talking too loud, and oh shit- there's someone else in bed with him.
or: Dustin has the annoying habit of just busting into Eddie's trailer at ungodly hours. One morning Eddie's not alone though.
SVSSS
Protagonist Rehabilitation Programme by cinnamonsnaps
(oh my god they were roommates)
"Thank you, valued user, for accepting the Protagonist Rehabilitation Programme. Your task: Ensure the protagonist's happiness."
Shen Yuan is convinced that his favouri... least favourite novel's main protagonist isn't really happy. He has babes, money and power, but does he have any friends? Cue the system handily dropping Demon King Luo Binghe into his bedroom. Can Shen Yuan make him happy before the timer runs out?
(90% light-hearted comedy, 10% existential horror and fear because this is the OG PIDW Binghe we're talking about)
Shadowhunters
Families of Choice by MonPetitTresor
Life at the Institute takes a turn for the worse for Alec. When he's alone with no where else to turn, his siblings step up and help him find his feet once more with help from a few new friends along the way. Between them, Alec finally gets a chance to realize that the world doesn't begin and end with being a Shadowhunter, and there's more out there for him, so long as he's got the courage to reach out and grab it.
Salvation lets their wings unfold by HopeSilverheart
Alec is frozen and, when she spots what has him looking so horrified, so is Clary.
Above the fireplace, hanging on the wall like some sort of divine offering, rest a pair of huge, black angel wings, so similar to Alec’s own. The mere sight makes him want to throw up and curl his wings around himself to make sure all his feathers are still in place. He can’t even begin to imagine life without the pair of extra limbs every Nephilim has to deal with. To be faced with the reminder that some people want nothing more than to tear those wings off his back is…
“What the fuck, Alec?” Clary whispers, her voice choked up and angry and alarmed. “Alec, what is this?”
Or: Alec, Clary and Magnus go on a mission to a warlock's home. What they find there leaves its mark on both shadowhunters.
Star Wars
listen, there's a hell of a universe next door by storm_petrel
As it turns out, no one ever taught Luke how to tie a little green baby to his back one-handed, but Luke thinks he's pretty gods-damned good at problem-solving under pressure, thank you, and the baby is at least semi-cooperative. When he's sure the kid is strapped in as tight as he can get, Luke pauses, and reaches back. His fingers graze the wide point of the baby's fuzzy ear. "Well, kid," says Luke, and his voice is a little rough, but not bad, all things considered. "Carrying you on my back while getting the absolute banthashit kicked out of me, at least this feels familiar."
The baby coos in his ear, and then kicks him hard in the kidney. Yoda used to do the exact same thing. Somehow, it's a lot more endearing now.
Or: Luke Skywalker solves a number of life-or-death problems, makes some new friends, falls abruptly in love, and gets shot into space, all in the same day.
Clone Wars
No wealth, no ruin, no silver, no gold by themonopolyhat
"New orders.” Cody hands the data pad over, and Waxer takes a minute to absorb the screen contents.
“Are we—” He stops, his voice hushed with something like awe. “Do we get to hit Dooku's... the kriff do the natties call it...” He snaps his fingers and points at Wooley for some reason. “Vacation home. Are we gonna burn down Dooku's vacation home?"
Or: Six weeks after Obi-Wan's funeral, the 212th reunites with their general.

I want everyone to know the only thing stopping me from writing a liushen fic where Evil Binghe shows to kill SQQ and burn down everything but normal LBH helps Shen Yuan and Liu QIngge escape with his portal sword XIn Mo--except they flee to the modern world, but Shen Yuan doesn’t turn back into himself, he’s stuck looking like SQQ who looks *enough* like him that he can steal his own identity to get a social insurance number but not so much that he’d fool friends and family and so they have to move (either cross continent or just to a different province in China) and establish new lives and sort of a fake identity for Liu Qingge as they figure out what they’re going to do for the rest of their lives--
but then, well Shen Yuan knows how the modern world works and after so long as a teacher and also still having all SQQ’s latent skills decides to get his master’s in library studies so he can support them only LQG doesn’t have any marketable skills and is overcome with guilt like “SQQ saved my life, got me an identity in a foreign world and he’s doing everything in his power to help me and he’s figuring out how to blend in and be of use, why can’t I do anything? I’m just dragging him down--” but SQQ is overcome with guilt like “LQG is so unhappy here, how can I enjoy modern life when I’m the reason for his unhappiness, when I did this to him, when he still thinks I’m SQQ? How could I have dragged him here with me just because I didn’t want to be lonely? If he knew how to leave he obviously would and is only with me because he can’t go anywhere else :/”
and then LQG joins a community center to teach underprivileged kids like martial arts and discover who he really is and accidentally joins a punk rock band and SY realizes he doesn’t want to be who he was before he trans-migrated but also he revels in not having to be SQQ and then they fall in love--
anyway, the only think stopping me from writing a 50,000 word fic of this is the 3 hour commute I have for work every day. If I could work from home every day this shit would get done I’m telling you!

contemplating QiJiu -- particularly in the context of my AU -- an’ trying to decide whether I ship it romantically or not :|c
Feeling like the most honest version of myself prefers them queer-platonic -- ill-defined and kinda messy? Private, very private. Like, it takes a while to even get to that point, because they’ve got so much else to work through first... on top of that, technically Shen Jiu is a Qiong Ding disciple now. Sure, it’s almost laughably in-name-only, but still! He is. Even if they both know better--and several more Peak Lords would also know better by then--Shen Jiu is insistent on some semblance of propriety.
He refuses to mirror Shen Qingqiu & Luo Binghe as much as he can help it. And beside that, he’s far less comfortable with PDA, anyway. This will always be true. Thankfully, Yue Qingyuan’s level of public-facing affection tends to be on the subtler side, anyway. He is Sect Leader, after all. Though... to be honest, the other Peak Lords can still tell, but they learned very quickly not to bring it up near either of them. >>;;
(Mostly.)
Anyway, thinking about how Shen Jiu starts out being Intensely Uncomfortable with any sort of Touching Him. Affectionate or not. Private or not. Starting his second life as a kid softened his discomfort response some due to exposure, but it’s an uphill battle the whole way. It’s a damn good thing that Yue Qingyuan is Patient & Determined. He’s not letting go. No way. Not again.
Thankfully, those feelings are a tad more reciprocated this time... after all, Shen Jiu was the one who decided to come back. Didn’t have to. Wanted to.
--all of this to say, Shen Jiu is the big spoon. It started out as a compromise RE Shen Jiu’s hyper-vigilance (Don’t Touch His Back) VS Yue Qingyuan and the mutual Desire For Physical Comfort. But to be honest... as much as Yue Qingyuan might like to hold him, he discovers it is kind of nice? Actually? Being the “small” one this time. Even if he is like a head taller than Shen Jiu’s new body, but shhhh...
I had other thoughts, but I’ve caught sleepy bitch disease & have since forgotten them. So ty for coming to my TEDtalk.

Be careful who you badmouth! PART ONE
Shen Yuan transmirgrated into the worst stallion novel ever. And it was at the end! There were NO cultivation sects- the realms were merged demons running rampant and all the lower class and poor were getting killed by monsters feeding on them! Shen Yuan who took over a rebel cultivator realised he was so fucked if he was caught. He would get the scum villains stick ending if he wasn't careful. He immedietly abandoned the role of the body he was taking, some canon fodder trying to over-throw Luo Binghe? Was this guy insane!
He planned on running away from this rat tag group and just decided to observe the beasts and flora of this realm! He can explore in this open map to his hearts content!
Before he began to be ropped into helping others, then it happened again and again.
They gave him food! A man has to eat! And he was able to fill his beastiary of all that he found. Even with information that he learned through Luo Binghe's adventures.
On one night hunt, he came across another cultivator.
He calls himself Tianmo Yincang. Shen Yuan helps him out after the other cultivator almost gets beaten up by the beast. Shen Yuan takes the injured young man to an inn and feeds him.
"Whats a young kid like you doing outside fighting beasts like that? It's dangerous- and cultivating is illegal! You could be in serious trouble."
Tianmo smirked "I could say the same about you." [Tianmo Yincang means Heavenly demon hidden. but if anyone thinks of a better name let me know]
Ugh this brat, Shen Yuans eye twitched.
"I don't cultivate for myself. I just want to explore demonic beasts, but a mortal wouldn't survive the study." Shen Yuan pouts he gasps as the other sits up "Careful- you took a beating, another days bed rest and you should be fine." The man stared at him, and Shen Yuan gulped feeling as if he was looked right through.
"Thank you for the assistence, stranger." Shen Yuan smiled unsure "You can call me Shen Yuan." The other smiled "Shen Yuan."
This kid was really unnerving.
Shen Yuan leaned back scratching his head "I don't suppose you were with a group huh? I know the village pay rogue cultivators to dispose of any problems but big groups will cause a problem."
The other watched him warily.
"Why is that?"
"Well Lord Luo Binghe outlawed Cultivation." Shen Yuan was inturupted by a knock on the door "Ah-" He stood up to leave, unaware of the crimson eyes watching his every move.
He thanked the lady who brought a tray of food and sent her on her way.
"Here we go." He placed the tray down, hovering over his charge.
The other watched the food warily, Shen Yuan blinked confused before realising.
This was a cut throat novel of course this young man was wary!
"Ah hold on," Shen Yuan took a small plate and took a view pieces of food from each bowl and took a taste test.
"Welp- I don't taste anything strange- so it should be fine?" He wondered outloud, he moved to his own bowl and decided to eat ignoring the others stare.
"Why did you want to see the beasts?" The other asked still not touching his food. Probably waiting for Shen Yuan to drop dead possibly.
"Well they're fascinating. I plan on finding the Blue billed duck, or even the Ice flame phoenix. The Blue bill speicies have different coloured bills and they only mate with ones of the same colour?" Shen Yuan spoke with his chopsticks before eating forgetting his manners entierly.
"After this I heard there was a water ghoul disrupting farmers and their ponds. I plan on going there next to see if thats the case or just a rumour, did Young Master have anywhere to go after this?"
The other began to slowly eating his food once it was clear Shen Yuan was fine.
"I was only told of this one beast, I never knew there was another?"
"Oh there's thousands. I'm surprised the humans haven't been wiped out yet. Most are ignorant of beasts- most are friendly they only respond when they're attacked while others lure in victims and eat them. Most mortals don't know ever since since the realms merged it's been a fight to survive everyday."
"Why not ask Lord Luo Binghe for help?"
"I think they have? I don't know if they did or did not…or maybe others think he has other things to deal with." Shen Yuan shrugged finishing his bowl.
"Thats enough for tonight, you should rest up. Would there be anyone looking for you, other cultivators I could let the innkeeper know?"
"No, it's just me."
Shen Yuan paused and looked back at his temporary charge. He was so young and he had no one.
He pressed his lips together "I'll be in the other room…."
As they both sat before the fire after that life and death experence the young man before him spoke.
"Do you hate Lord Luo Binghe?"
Shen Yuan looked up surprised. Truthfully, it was better not to bad mouth the current overlord. Others could be spies and report to Luo Binghe for a mutiny.
Shen Yuan placed a hand to his mouth "Hmm, it depends." he shrugged and began poking the fire.
"Would you wish someone else was in charge instead of Lord Luo Binghe, if we overthrow him-"
Oh no that was dangerous talk especially from a kid so young- ah stop raising death flags young cannon fodder please!
"Stop that nonsense right now." It was the first time Shen Yuan was angry at his young charge his glare hardening.
"Overthrowing Lord Luo Binghe is suicide and is better to put such thoughts to rest." The boy blinked his own eyes narrowing, "But if you could though- how would you do it."
Shen Yuan eyebrow twitched. His tone irritated, he wanted this kid to get this through his thick skull that no one can beat the protagonist.
"Fine, here's what I'll do." He took a drink then placed the water pouch down.
"Our Lord has one weakness, I would use this weakness by asking for an audience with our Lord with a women who I'd hired to assist me. This women would instead be a man in disguise once the Lord is alone with her and she utilizes this weakness once his guard is down she'll kill him." Shen Yuan spoke but continued "And then I take over his kingdom for say about five minutes. Then I would be brutally murdered by his harem of wives full of assasins, cultivators and demons alike, if not them then I would have to compete with Strong demon Lords who were waiting for this chance to take over the entire realm. Imagine someline like Mobei Juns uncle being taking over the throne? Luo Binghe's rein would've looked pleasent compared to the utter nightmare we'll be put through with the ruthless demon lords- Humans would be enslaved to be feed to demons who eat us, the human collatoral alone as demons and humans would fight out in the open for territory. But those won't be the worst contestors no- it would be demonic cultivators, the same ones that use Mortals as Human Cauldrons having someone like that in charge of the realm." Shen Yuan shook his head.
"A power vacum. Having so many contend for the throne the casualities would be enormous. No, Lord Luo Binghe may be a bit unrefined in some corners, but he thought for that Throne and earned it and has at least some amount of mercy. Although…Unless you were one of his wives or children not many peoples lives are perfect. But at least they're alive. With him gone our situation will only go from bad to worse." Shen Yuan shook his head.
The young mans eyes stared unblinking at him and Shen Yuan became unnerved "Hmm? What is it?"
"If you're afraid of Lord Luo Binghe you don't need to hide behind such weak excuses."
Weak excuses! It was the truth!? Without Luo Binghe their world will fall into chaos because he's the protagonist!
"Tell me what his weakness is- I know thousands of men and women who want to overthrow this Lord a weakness such as that would surely."
"No."
Shen Yuan closed his eyes with a sigh.
"I may have made a mistake in telling you, Lord Luo Binghe may have a weakness, but he'll never die. And if you plan on torturing me for it then I'm afraid to disapoint you. Tell those men to let it go, it's hopeless and even this weakness wouldn't be enough to stop Luo Binghe."
The Man blinked then smiled his eyes softening "You give Lord Luo Binghe too much credit. He's not a god."
Shen Yuan shrugged "No, unfortunatly he's a man. If Lord Luo Binghe came before us here I wouldn't be surprised to be punished for treason. It is what is is." He shrugged shifting in his seat.
The young man looked unsure as he glanced at the fire then back at Shen Yuan.
"What if you could talk to him, tell him everything thats wrong and how he should fix it?"
Shen Yuan finally relaxed, this he could talk about. "Well," he chuckled "If he was open to the suggestion and wouldn't hack of my limbs for impertinence, then I would suggest return cultivation sects to the mortals. It would help moral and turn their ire away if he gave them a fighting chance to defend themselves. If it was superviosry offices instead and he put his wives in charge and stationed them around his kingdom they could double act as a cultivation sect but also have his men and women stationed in areas he could control. Imagine pledging to Lord Luo Binghe? Most will trip over themselves to have their children educated. Most would prefer that than the other option of selling their children to slavery. Cultivation saved lives once, kids who were starving or wanted to protect others or themselves. There are loads of people in Luo Binghe's position who don't have the same options as he did. It's like being in a well and climbing out and pulling out the rope and leaving the others alone in that hole with no way out. What benefited Binghe he took that experience away from others…he's slowly becoming like the cultivation masters who abused him. Crippling others just so they won't be stronger than him."
The fire suddenly erupted and Shen Yuan yelped his robes catching alight "Ah- shit!" He gasped falling back instantly slapping at the flame.
"Yuan-ge!" The man gasped out horrified eyes wide in surprise Shen Yuan laughed "Well that was weird aha! Maybe Lord Binghe is cursing me." he snickered. Well that was a bad omen and an ominious death flag.
Welp, he's not going to have long to live.
The young man sat down, fire lighting his eyes.
"If you could meet Lord Luo Binghe and he accepted your proposal what then?" Shen Yuan looked up surprised.
This young man…he worried for him. But then again he could be a servant of Lord Binghe- alas. Being a rogue cultivator in a world that outlawed cultivation of course he wasn't going to last long.
Shen Yuan mumbled to himself "…Well I hope it's not a human stick-"
"Hmm?"
"If I could say anything to him, and he humoured me. I would mostly ask about his adventures." Shen Yuan smiled wistfully, thinking on the book PIDW.
"I always liked hearing stories about him, he's just so cool, y'know. Even if he decided to merge the realm because of paper work being too excesive," Shen Yuan laughed "No matter what life threw at him he always perceviered, he was so smart and clever but also strong- even before his heavenly demon blood was unsealed. As a disciple he beat Elder Hammer at just fifteen." Shen Yuan gushed then sighed "It's just a shame, that no one realised his potential. If he had anyone there for him he wouldn't be struggling. Lord Luo Binghe isn't failing his people from a lack of bad leadership. It's his lack of allies. Our Lord can't be everywhere and once and hold our hands. If he had more men he could trust others to aid him then it would'nt be so bad. Which is why I suggest his wives and children to take over the offices they would want to please him and it would probably stop his harem infighting if they had a goal- lets see who can be better at holding the peace in the area our Lord gave us!" He said with a nod.
Unaware how his audience latched onto every word.
"Yuan-ge?"
"Hmm?"
"Would you really not tell me this- Lord Luo Binghe's weakness even under torture?"
Shen Yuan stiffened feeling goosebumps. He really made a mistake. He was fucked. So heavenly fucked.
"Yes. The only one who should know is Luo Binghe himself."
That caught the others interest "So even our Lord doesn't know this?"
Shit!
"Well- lets just says he's experienced it alot that he doesn't see it as a weakness-"
"Like a poison?"
Shen Yuan shook his head "No, he's immune to poisons."
"But he's not immune to everything." Shen Yuan stood up. "Goodnight, put out the fire once you're done." "Ah- Yuan-ge? Was it something I said." shen Yuan turned around.
"Forget about Lord Luo Binghe. Pretend I said nothing."
Of course right after that they began to continue their night hunts. Even if this man was a spy of Luo Binghe. Shen Yuan found he didn't mind. His bestiary was almost finished he even showed the younger man.
"whats this for?"
"Well I was thinking of selling this to a publisher to help the locals defend themselves. It only says how to nuetralize, most of these beasts do have properties thats good for cultivation but I had to censor that. Didn't want Rogue cultivators getting the wrong idea…Lord Binghe wouldn't allow that."
The Young man took the bestiary and flipped through his eyes furrowed "So this is censored?"
"To the best of my ability there is no information on cultivation. So it doesn't break any laws." Shen Yuan nodded, it killed him.
"I have a second book here," he said reaching into his quirkan pouch and retrieved it.
"This is everything I have on papa- I mean everything else."
He missed the narrowed eyed stare from the man who took it out his hands.
he flipped through his eyes narrowing further "This is just flowers?" Shen Yuan looked away "Mmm-hmm."
The other paused then he smirked "Dual cultivation? I hadn't know you were so well versed in this. Had much experience?"
…He was teasing him.
Shen Yuan scowled "As if- do I look like I have anyone to partner with- as if. I only researched these flowers so I wouldn't run into them."
"Hmm what about me? Don't you make a habit of helping strangers and partnering up with fellow cultivators?" What's with this questioning?
"You're the only one thats stuck around long enough. Like a leach. If you want to go you can leave." Shen Yuan snatched his book back and began to walk away.
"A-Yuan!" The other whined running up to him "Don't leave me!"
"Who are you calling A-yuan! I'm your elder!"
"You're not that much older than me."
"Disrepctful. Of course I find you younger if you start acting like a brat."
"A-yuan! I didn't mean to upset you-"
"Enough people are staring…"
Once they dealt with the monster thats when this young master was hit with the sex pollen.
"shen Yuan-" He shoved the cultivator out the way and took thr brunt of the sex pollen. SHIT it was the potent stuff too!
Covering his mouth he grabbed Tiangmo and flew away on his rented sword after moving to a stream he began to remove the clothes that was covered in the sex pollen and drew up an array to dissuade others from getting closer including demons and other beasts.
"Shen Yuan," The other moaned his face flushed. Shen Yuan placed his hand to his forehead "You're burning up."
Tiangmo Yincang grasped his hand his eyes half-lidded "I know how to fix this, Yuan-ge can you help me? I might die-"
"You're not going to die. And how could I help you? I'm a man do you see me carrying a little sister in my pocket? my Quirkan pouch."
If he was riddled with this burning heat, Tiangmo would've laughed. This man was so strange-
"These papapa flowers always leave people vunerable." He scowled ripping into his pouch.
Tinagmo Yingcang sat up his hand out stretching and grabbing Shen Yuans robes.
The other paused "What are you doing…?"
"There's only one cure for these things," He began to slowly disrobe the other "Dual cultivation, it's the only way-"
He felt the sting of the slap against his face and his head snapped to the side. It was enough to bring lucidity.
"Do I LOOK like a maiden to you!? Enough. You're not going to die and we're not going to dual cultivate!" Shen Yuans voice cracked immedietly digging into his pouch with vigor.
He brought out a tailsman and slammed it against Tiangmo's chest activating it and then produced a vial.
"Drink this. Now." Tinagmo Yingcang was dazed he was also distracted by the furious blush on Shen Yuans face he took the vial and drank it.
he…he could feel his body begin to lose it's heat.
"What…what is this?"
Shen Yuan sighed he moved to the river and soaked a cloth, while moving back he began to clean Tiangmo's face.
"Not many of us are lucky to dual cultivate. So with some trial and error I looked for less potent flowers to experiment with. After much trial and error I figured out a remedy for Papapa flowers."
Tiangmo eyes furrowed "papapa? I never heard of these flowers?"
Shen Yuan coughed "It's just what I call them, flowers that require dual cultivation as the cure."
The other looked down at the tailsman on his chest.
"I think if you gave this to Luo Binghe he would reward you ten-fold." Shen Yuan laughed.
"If he ever tries to punish me for rogue culitvation, I'll use this to bargain aha."
Shen Yuan began to love going on night hunts with Tiangmo, he was very reliable! He even taught him everything he knew- which was how he knew from Luo Binghe.
"Shen Yuan is smart, how did he find this out?"
"Well- stories about Luo Binghe traveled so I double checked myself,"
"If Cultivation came back…would you be a teacher?" Shen Yuans eyes widened "What?" He gaped surprised him? A teacher?
"Ah, I think I would be terrible…cultivating is about forms and meridians and there's tons of things I don't know. Like Waterborne abyss or a Night Forest Abyss- man I'm terrified to encounter one of those I wouldn't know how to get out…"
Shen Yuan sighed "How can I teach when I'm just as ignorant."
"…Then- can I be your disciple?"
"huh?"
"Can I call you Shizun?"
Shen Yuan blinked, no- no way.
"I couldn't-"
"If Cultivation wasn't illegal could I be your disciple?"
Shen Yuan wavered "I doubt there's anything I could teach you." He smiled patting the young man on the head "You would only be wasting your time with this old man."
"I wouldn't! I would gladly follow Shizun! he's smart and looks after others. I would be proud to be his disciple."
Shen Yuan flinched "Shh- don't let others overhear you!"
"Are you ashamed?" The others eyes began to water and Shen Yuan felt even more worse "No, no- it's still outlawed I don't want you to get in trouble."
Now Tiangmo Yincang looked resentful "Was it really so bad to outlaw Cultivation?"
Ah damage control.
"Tinagmo Yingcang it's fine- there's nothing we can do about it."
"Then lets go to Luo Binghe- request an audiance! Then I can be your disciple!" Shen Yuan shivered.
"No- no way."
"Why? Is me being your disciple so horrible?"
"It's because I'm scared alright!" He grabbed the young mans shoulders "There's a slight chance Luo Binghe would be benevolant and would bring back Cultivation and the sects and we can all have a happily ever after, but there's also the chance that he'll turn us into human sticks or feed us to fire ants! The chance is too risky! And there's no point arguing about it. Promise me you'll drop this."
Tiangmo blinked his eyes wide "I…I thought you liked Luo Binghe. You respected him." He sounded so lost and Shen Yuan faltered and let him go, with a sigh.
"Of course I do. But I don't know what he's thinking half the time or why he does hate cultivation sects so much? Why does he hate men and trusts women- it's just too risky…" Shen Yuan looked away. Honestly this young man was giving him heart attacks left right and centre.
Stop raising death flags young man! You're too young to die!
"You're scared of Our Lord that much?"
"Yeah he's terrfying, Who wouldn't be afraid? and I'm a man. If I was a women then at least I'd know the worst thing is to end up as his wife." And take that heavenly pillar, he shivered.
"I'm sure Lord Luo Binghe won't hurt you. If he knew about you he would probably see you have valuble insight."
Shen Yuan looked at him, there was no use wasting his time.
Tiangmo is going to be roped into one of those rebel Cultivator groups.
"Listen Tiangmo, there are rebel groups who are against Luo Binghe." This caught Tiangmo's attention.
"You can decide now what you want to do. If you hate Luo Binghe that much I can't do anything about it…" Shen Yuan looked away "Or, you can come with me. We'll continue taking odd jobs and help the locals and continue our beastiary-" Whoops he said 'our'
"You can call me Shizun in private if you want." He scratched his cheek feeling them warm up. Being called Shizun would be weird and embarrising.
"…Does Shizun know where the rebel cultivators are?"
Shen Yuan blinked, then pursued his lips. When he woke up he was the Rebel leader before he walked away realising how stupid that was.
"I did used to know them…before I realised how much of a lost cause it was and decided to put my efforts else where. I cut ties, I don't know where they could be…" He looked up.
"The only thing I do know, was that they met in brothels, you'd assume their buisness was pleasure but it was a meeting ground." That's where he found himself during a big speech. He had all these young men staring at him and he had no idea where or who he was.
He looked to the closest guy beside him as the others yelled "Down with the demon half-breed! Down with Lord Luo Binghe." After hearing that he realised how much he was flirting with death.
He turned to- whom he was assuming was his right hand man and patted his shoulder "You're in charge." And ran away.
Tinagmo nodded "Okay."
…What?
"Shen Yuan you can't live like this- you wouldn't even fight Lord Luo Binghe and tell him your demands you would rather hide with your tail between your legs."
owch that hurt. Shen Yuan's eyes narrowed "have you met any man who asked to bring back cultivation Sects? After what happened to Shen Qingqiu? And you tell me why I'm afraid?"
Tinagmo Yingcangs eyes widened taking a step back.
"Come on, lets go." Shen Yuan nodded looking away he felt raw and wanted to forget this converstation.
"I heard something happened in Hualing city, we could go check it out…Tiangmo Yingcang?"
The other looked sullen.
"I think, I should find the rebels, Shen Yuan."
Shen Yuans eyes widened, he could walk away. But he felt something else bone-chilling fear.
"Tiangmo- be reasonable."
"I've made up my mind. I wanted to find the rebels first and join them. I heard you were their leader who was laying low." Shen Yuan sighed.
"I've given that up- those rebels should and so should you, it's pointless Tiangmo Yingcang there's no need to throw away you're life for this. Lord Luo Binghe isn't our enemy."
The young man shook his head "A beast like him only responds to violence. We should fight-"
"He's a heavenly demon! Tiangmo you're talking nonsense-"
"Shizun you won't be afraid anymore." Tiangmo drew his sword and flew away before Shen Yuan could stop him.
"Tiangmo- STOP!" He cried out mounting his own sword but it didn't matter…he was gone…
Shen Yuan found an inn, but he was barely paying attention as he collapsed onto the bed. His mind abuzz with static.
He made a mistake.
He made a mistake keeping Tiangmo along, he made a mistake letting him go- why did he tell him where the rebels were.
He could picture it, the group deciding to start their siege and be slaughtered. Luo Binghe would never hear them only see them as a threat.
And Tiangmo-
Tiangmo's broken body appeared before his mind, dead sliced down by Xin mo his eyes wide in surprise.
Shen Yuans mouth wobbled his eyes stinging with tears as he curled up in a ball in his bed.
This was a novel- he wasn't real. So his death is meaningless…it didn't mean anything. So why- why couldn't he stop crying.
…Tiangmo's absence was obvious. He could barely focus or even have any excitment for the beasts and demons he defeated. Even the money he had he found himself giving most of it away. He was robbed and he barely cared.
Even the food was bland…although he immedietly understood the others worry as he was poisoned and woke up with a high fever and his rented sword and quirken pouches were stolen.
At least his beastiarys were protected. So much arrays and protections so his books couldn't leave two feet of his person. Or even get damaged.
Months passed and he found himself unable to eat or sleep. Even with Enedia wasn't enough to show how guant he was looking.
He could've been happy with Tiangmo Yingcang. Both surviving and passing aimlessly hunting beasts and looking up fuana.
He just doomed a young man to death…although- Jiangmo was struggling with a beast so maybe he just bought him some time.
Why did he get attatched? Why did he influence him to be anti-Binghe.
Shen Yuan scrubbed his face.
"Hey you!" He turned and blanched.
A women in red clothes that was practically scandoulous and another with a veil on her face. It was obvious who these two were.
Shen Yuan grabbed his stuff and his new rental sword and ran out the window.
"Get back here!"
"Stop him!"
Of course, being pursued by Luo Binghe's wives after years of silence meant one thing.
He was dead. Welp this was fun while it lasted, thank you PIDW for giving back some thing back. He loved PIDW for the demons and monsters and he got that in spades. He should be happy.
