#bionicle 2015 style

Text
So I've seen at least one post talking about a G3 bionicle in system(1) that said it would be more expensive due to the smaller parts.
This is probably not true. Or not inherently so, at least(2).
The GWP set is 219 pieces. Compared to the (admittedly licensed) 75892-1 McLaren Senna at the same piece count, it should retail around 15$. That's comparable to the smaller(3) Masters line of 2015.
However, we can break this down further. The GWP set also features Takua, the Mata Nui & Makuta stones, a lava board and pedestal with lava. Presumably, an actual system style Bionicle wouldn't include all of that in a set.
That leaves Takua at 37 (not including backpack/disc, which would bring him up to 41) and Tahu at a mere 84 (Anyone want to double-check my counting here, go ahead.)
None of these use unique pieces(4), which leaves Takua squarely in the polybag range. Which retail for like. 5$ USD.
Tahu lands roughly equivalent to 9440 Venomari Shrine, which was a whopping 7$ USD.
These are all comparisons, but I think they're fair ones.
Tldr; the price could be equivalent at worst, but would likely end up cheaper then the previous generations.

i've started a little series of weekly posts documenting every MoC i made (digitally) over the last few years:
Week 9: 2022
some old MoCs returning, lego art, 90th anniversary toa team, video game stuff and more Rock Raiders (yay)
this one will be the penultimate week.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
remember back in week 2 (2018) where i tested out the differences in rendering between stud.io 1 and 2? i tested out the mecabricks extention for Blender to render some digital bricks.
this took way too long to setup and render, so i decided to not use blender for rendering after that (escpecially after the win11 updated fucked with my graphics card)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
another mandalorian s2 set MoC. din djarins N1 starfighter, based on the last N1 set we had back in 2015. i think these proportions aren't good, but a bit better than the official set. (its still too big though)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the Horizon: forbidden west set was also teased/revealed around that time, so i decided to make a diorama with just the watcher (and one with a corrupted one) that would be a bit more managable in both cost and size than the tallneck.
i still got the tallneck, becauce those robot dinos are cool as hell and i want to support video game based sets, even though i am a big supporter of the concept that LEGO should make more original themes instead of big and expensive licensed sets (like rivendell....)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
some greebles inspired by the ones on the Icons (formerly master builder) "theme" of sets, also my header image for tumblr.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
back in 2017 (week one) i made The Slugcat Portrait mosaic, and i decided in 2022 that i would remake it to be more in line with the way i would built with bricks at that time. i think i improved wuite a bit.
Tumblr media
i like the 90 years of play tahu, even if his design was considered to be controversial, so i decided to make the full 2001 set lineup for bionicle. i think they turned out pretty good, but i find it a bit annoying that the maccaroni piece does not exist in tan or medium blue (a dicontinued colour)
Tumblr media
anyone remeber Valley? the momentum-based FPS platformer? no? it wasn't really mind-blowing, but i still enjoyed the movement and flow of the game. i also always wanted to try out the Legoland Miniland style of character building. this was the perfect opportunity to combine both of these things.
i think the proportions might be a bit off, but i still like this little desk friend
Tumblr media
someone asked me on twitter to send them the instructions for my marble machine MoC (as seen in week 7), but i didn't want to give them such and outdated build, so i re-designed it to be more up to date.
they ended up giving me about 14 $ for these instructions, which made me pretty happy.
Tumblr media
i tried to make a micro-scale version of the exo-force set 7701 Grand Titan. i really dislike the way this one turned out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lego Ideas had yet another contest. this one was about designing a poster for the then new 21334 Jazz Quartet. i called this one "Golden Sounds" and it is the first mosaic-type MoC that i made where i first sketched it out to kinda figure out how i wanted it to look.
i like the way this one turned out, but i think i should've built it in such a way that the colours in the background wouldn't be as dim.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
remember last week when i said i wanted to make more Rock raiders MoCs? turns out i did. a lot too.
this VTOL-style transport vehicle was kinda inspired by those industrial transport helicopters and was supposed to be some sort of reimagining of 4980 tunnel transport. i think it's a bit too clunky and a bit too skinny at the same time. not my favourite.
also there's a modular open container (is that what they're called?) that can be fixed under the vehicle. (as well as the room container that you'll see next)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Modular bases are so cool you guys. this one is inspired by 4990 Rock Raiders HQ and those big old moving platforms Nasa uses. it could be controlled with a motor, has a removable cockpit (with an access hatch) and the platform has a lot of room for modules. like the crystal refinery, the room container, the high platforms, the crane and the crane attachment holder.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
here are a few variants for the room container: an artifact storage with workbench, a small break room and a laboratory. i like those and i might do more in some time in the future. idk yet.
Tumblr media
my take on the rock monsters. some crystal infested/energized Fauna.
first some bipedal designs (the left one is a modded version of a deviant form an eternals sets) that could be more agressive carnivore types.
in the middle are some quadrupedal guys that could be a bit less agressive and even friendly. Left is a modded version of my SCP 860 creature from week 4 (which was based on either an legendary beast from Chima or a dragon from elves) and the right one is a recolour from the fluffy-tailed Hog from my satisfactory series from week 3
and lastly, some insectoid designs, a kind of beetly creature and two ants, one of them with wings. these could be some sort of neutral (like in minecraft) swarm that might be a problem for buildings and cocky miners.
Tumblr media
this is probably my favourite of my Rock Raiders Builds from 2022. it's 4920 rapid rider built with modern pieces that has been overtaken by the energy crytals. it can be fully freed from crystal and reassebled, which is nice.
we'll see another rapid rider next week...
first week last week final week

A1, A13, C4, C8, C16 for the BIONICLE asks?
A1: Out of the original 6 Toa, Lewa is my favorite. I'm familiar with the G2 Lewa, but G1 Lewa's personality seems pretty similar. My other favorites are Krika and Hahli. Hahli's personality, especially in 2007 where she was having no one's shit. The scene in Bionicle Ignition where she just yeets Kalmah lives in my head rent free.
A13: Oh... I already mentioned it's Hahli, didn't I. Anyway I'm gonna use this as an excuse to talk about Nuparu, because I think he's cool too. I like the idea of him post-cannon managing to invent his way out of almost anything. Maybe he makes advanced weapons and armor for other Toa.
C4: Found reviews of the G2 sets on youtube, bought them when I saw them in stores, fell out of bionicle later, and got way back into it when I discovered biotube in 2018. And now I'm here, making MOCs and revamps, and infrequent worldbuilding that I'd like to do more of.
C8: I have all of the 2016 sets except Ekimu and Umarak the Hunter. I did have some of the 2015 sets, but unfortunately, I'm an idiot and lost most of the parts when I moved, so now they're just disassembled in parts bins.
C16: I've already answered this so lemme just copy paste the answer
I do really like the animation style from Journey to One, where it's in between the Miramax Trilogy and The Legend Reborn in terms of toy accuracy. It looks sort of cell shaded, and everything is sort of scratched and dusty, but still colorful. As for plot and setting, I'm thinking make a movie adaptation of one of the Ignition War years. Ignition War is probably my favorite part of the plot. As for which year, I think JTO's bright animation style would fit best with the 2008 setting and characters, so we're going with that.

Ok but I just realised that I kinda find CCBS easier to pose and work with than the traditional Bionicle building system, so expect some more Hero Factory stuff (also G2-related stuff when Stud.io gets the 2015-style head pieces; they will canon-inspired, but also some stuff to do with the Okotan Empire from my AU).

2001: Quest for the Masks
Part 6.7: 1388 Huki, 1389 Onepu, 1390 Maku, 1391 Jala, 1392 Kongu, 1393 Matoro
Man, remember when Happy Meal toys were good? I sure don't, these guys were before my time. The original Matoran sets, nicknamed the McToran by fans to differentiate them from the various other groups of Matoran sets, were released in 2001 as free toys received alongside the purchase of a McDonald's Happy Meal. Some people still refer to them as "Tohunga," and, well...that's a personal choice. I don't approve, but it's not for me to dictate your fandom experience.
The Matoran are the heart and soul of Bionicle, and that means two things:
One: they’re the villagers, the innocent people the Toa defend. The Matoran are the reason the world deserves to be saved. They’re hardy, kind, and so very small. Bionicle could have been a story about heroes vs. villains and that could have been it. But it wasn’t. It built up its world, made you care about it, and showed you why it had heroes fighting for it. And it did it all through these guys. The Matoran are kind of the true protagonists of 2001, with the Toa getting very little development early on. We saw the island of Mata Nui, with all its mystique and grandeur, through the eyes of these guys, and I think that’s brilliant.
Tumblr media
Two: the Matoran are miniaturized expressions of the Bionicle aesthetic. I mean just look at them. They’re weird. They’ve got these stumpy little duck feet, kind of ugly faces, bright colours, funky masks, and long, bizarre arms. Seriously, what is up with these guys? But at the same time, they’re kind of adorable? They’re these cute, tiny, misshapen weirdos, and it’s great. I mean, you can’t really expect too much from free toys attached to happy meals. And yet, these guys deliver a surprising amount.
Tumblr media
They are actually buildable Lego sets, unlike future McDonalds/Bionicle toys. They have bright, unique colours, and two functions, kinda. The left arm can be pulled back and released in a punching action, while the right throws disks, Slizer-style. For free McDonalds toys, that’s fantastic. They can even store their disks on the backs of their heads, which is something the animations showed off plenty, but that I didn't know was possible with the sets until like 2015. The grooves on the bottom of the disks fit into slots on the backs of the Matoran's heads, so they can carry them on ther backs when not holding them.
And they’re all characters who actually matter! Jala is a fan favourite, the responsible captain of the Ta-Koro guard. And definitely the most McDonalds-looking of the bunch :P Matoro has the rarely seen sand blue colour and is an essential companion to Turaga Nuju. Huki is one of only a few characters to feature burnt orange, and Kongu and Onepu wear colours not seen in G1 after 2001, being teal and purple, respectively. Though, purple is kind of a weird choice for Earth, I will say. Makes the scheme too similar to that of Gravity, not that Ba-Matoran colour schemes were exactly a concern in 2001.
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maku stands out as an oddity. She is the only Mctoran not to feature a different colour scheme from her corresponding Toa and Turaga, and is also the only Mctoran to wear a different mask than her respective Toa. Instead of a Kaukau, Maku wears a Huna, which is fine, but a bit odd. The mask’s bearded look doesn’t exactly suit a female character, but it is nice to see that any character, of any gender, can wear any mask. I imagine the reason that Maku doesn’t wear a Kaukau is probably because that mask is a little more expensive to produce compared to the others, given its cgi design and the trans blue plastic, so it was probably inefficient to put the extra cash into producing them for free toys, hence, solid blue Huna. Oh well, I’m not complaining.
Tumblr media
Another Mctoran, Hafu, was released in the set 8546 Power Pack, alongside a chrome Hau and a disk featuring Bionicle music tracks. I will not be reviewing the Power Pack, but I will acknowledge Hafu here. He’s the same design as the rest. He’s a Po-Matoran with a tan body and arms and black feet and mask. A Ruru, in this case, so you could technically call him Taipu if you prefer, though he is intended to be Hafu.
Tumblr media
I really do love the McToran design. It's simple, but charming, with a strange, awkward cuteness to it. I do wish we'd gotten a few more, but then again, I'm still missing Matoro, so maybe I should focus on tracking him down before I worry about any more. Thankfully, the Mctoran are easy to colour-swap, and with the advent of collectable masks, there are plenty of designs to be made.
Next up: The Turaga

tell me about Bionicles please :)
OK SO I NEVER GOT TO ANSWER THIS IM VERY SORRY ok so a fun fact about the bionicles is that they singlehandedly saved Lego because the company was at risk to file for bankruptcy when they decided to try something new by giving the theme and characters a storyline. there were supposed to be seven films but only 4 of these were made, most likely due to the series being cancelled by lego, and the first 3 are available on youtube. Theres also a videogame but ive never been able to play it so i really cant say much about it. The bionicles themselves are also very cool and are also a great creative outlet since you can not only mix them with eachother but you can also build extra parts with other legos as well for example me and my brother made this cool rotay cannon and added it to our first bionicle. Another cool fact about them is that some of the bionicles came with masks called kanohi masks, lorewise these masks were originally made by the great beings and would grant the users powers, but in real life some of the masks actually contained hidden codes for exclusive content on the website. there was a reboot in 2015 of the series (that was cancelled not long after) and there was also a tv show made during that time but i have not seen in yet. the lore is very confusing but overall i think its fun to read about and even if its not of your interest the toys themselves are also really neat and have a very distinctive style and are extremely posableand are just really fun to play with and look at im sorry for rambling so much about bionicles i just really vibe with these funky toys and again sorry for not replying right away but i hope everythings cool :)

Wow I can’t believe it’s been pretty much a decade since I began really posting and sharing art, this is crazy to me!
Going back to look for some of these, I have such good memories of the fandoms and people I met through it and just wow, it is nostalgic to see really, more than the improvement, it is that part that I cherish most about doing this.
More talk in detail under the cut
2009: I was 16 and really just starting to get more formal about art, I started taking drawing lessons about this time, main things I liked were the Fairly Oddparents and Bionicle it seems haha.
2010: 17 now and about to go to college at this point. Seems coloring got better, but still a loooong way to go! I was obsessed with Friends at this point, I remember.
2011: First year of college and suffering lol, I started taking animation in college. Hated the school I was at and I still do. I started doing digital art on my own cause even though I was in art school no one thought it would be good to give people lessons on it (I am very bitter lol) Not a lot of art I care to remember tbh, really just not a good year.
2012: 19 years old and the Avengers obsession kicks in full force lmao. I made myself really start doing digital cause I wanted to draw Avengers things so much.
2013: Great year for improvement I would say! Really started to do my lineart and started getting coloring tips. Still full into Avengers mode.
2014: Started to get into some other Fandoms like Supernatural, thanks to Tumblr lol but still drawing some Marvel stuff here and there.
2015: HUNGER GAMES KICKS IN, THE YEAR OF HAYFFIE. God I kinda miss this time, it was sooo fun cause the fandom was so tiny! Started to use more motion and different coloring techniques.
2016: The Gravity Falls finale hits HARD this time lmao and then from then on my art was pretty much just GF for about 2 years. Also watched FMA for the first time and Royai is still fantastic I don’t make the rules.
2017: Gravity Falls is literally all I drew lol, it made me break out to use other styles, mainly more cartoony ones, and this is the year I really learned to take from other styles, but I was also drawing so much GF that I had to re-learn how to do my own style again. I finally graduated college at this point!.
2018: Had a really rough time at the start of this year, as I was mentally exhausted, but then Coco came along and filled my life with color lol. Learning to draw skeletons is a pain. Then Infinity War happened and it was weird coming back to something I had been apart for so long lol. But comparing the art from 2012 to 2018 was a mayor eye opener.
2019: And here we are! 26 years old and still doing fanart! Not a thing I plan on stopping any time soon. I love drawing and just seeing how to make the art even better, even if it does not go to plan sometimes is mayor boost to do art, I love it, and hope to do it more this next year!
Cheers if you read all this! If not then I at least hope it was a nostalgic ride if you have been here for a while! I love you all! <3

I didn't think it was worth a full tutorial this time, but here is how I figured out how to attach the Kraahkan to a 2015-style head. I also have some points about this below.
The studs are held in by putty. I would have used a 1x1 slope piece but I don’t know if these pieces come in trans dark blue.
Only one half-pin is needed to secure the black pin-axle adapter to the head. I put two in as an aesthetic choice.
Due to many factors that I don’t feel like explaining at the moment, even though the mask can be extremely floppy, it is physically impossible to knock the mask off like most of the Bionicle G2 masks. The Kraahkan must be intentionally pulled out of the adapter to  be removed.
