-- 𝑲𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒏 𝑹𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑩𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝑹𝑿 𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘 -- Kamen Rider Black RX, the final frontier. RX is the end of Rider’s tenure to the Japanese television screens on weekly airings in the Showa period. For Rider would not get its shine once more in television until 2000 with Kamen Rider Kuuga (2000-2001). RX is direct sequel to the previous Kamen Rider Black (1987-1988), following Kotaro Minami in a new battle against the Crisis Empire with his newly gained form “RX” and later the forms of Bio and Robo Rider following suit. The show occasionally brings back cast from the previous season to further add onto a tighter sense of continuity. RX follows in Black’s footsteps by being essentially “Kamen Rider but with Sentai and Metal Heroes underneath”, a show that is so devoid of the typical Kamen Rider format that when it eventually does return to it with the final arc it feels fresh and new. From the well-crafted storyline to some really great scenes of character drama, RX seems to keep the ball rolling with Black’s strengths while putting it into a new setting and tone that still works. A problem Rider faces when doing a sequel series so direct (see Rider to V3), is that the sense of staleness coming from the similar tone and sometimes new takes on old plots. RX succeeds where V3 fails in this regard, where the more of the same types of moments don’t feel like they overstay their welcome and, arguably, show why those types of beats worked so well last season. Another issue they face is implementing the legacy cast into the story, and I think RX has the best approach to handling the return of the previous Riders compared to the many abrupt and rave-y attempts seen before. Instead of feeling like an attempt to garner higher viewership or ratings, they feel like they return for a reason that fits their characters. The show tackles its themes and ideas in ways not dissimilar to how Black did with its own, and even expands on many of the themes of Black. The two shows go hand-in-hand very well, as if they really do want you to also see how the writing team are able to strut their stuff.  RX has a few issues with pacing at times, and I feel as if the show can have one too many unnecessary scenes that could have been cut out. I feel like this duo both have a wonky middle section that kinda bring them down but not to the point that it wholly affects the show. RX is worth a shot if you track down a good quality version, my personal recommendation is the Bereke Scrubs RX release.  NEXT: Iron King

“What did you do?”

Jemma hissed at him, her annoyance clear as she hurried him through the street market. Robbie looked back over his shoulder at the Locos shoving their way through the crowd to reach them.

“It’s a long story.”

The glare Jemma shot him made Robbie question if facing the gang might have been the less painful option. But if it wasn’t for the Locos deciding now was the time to make good on their threats, Jemma would have been on her way back to the security agency to quit this job. After what she had seen last night, Robbie couldn’t risk Jemma taking off and talking about his secret.

“Reyes! Stay focused!”

The Rider was dragging their feet, wanting to take on the gang rather than run from them. It didn’t matter that it was the entirety of the Locos coming after them, or that they were in a place where innocent people would get hurt, the devil wanted nothing but vengeance.

He was suddenly slammed back against a wall, Jemma grabbing the front of his jacket and yanking him down to her level.

“This doesn’t mean anything.”

Was all the warning he got from her before her lips crushed against his in a kiss.

For a moment even the Rider’s hunger for vengeance was drowned out by something sweeter. He pulled her closer and Jemma’s hands went from his jacket to around his neck as the kiss deepened. It had been years since Robbie had allowed anyone to get this close to him, his secret too dangerous to risk getting out. Now he didn’t want to let Jemma go, even after the footsteps of the Locos stopped pounding past them.

Jemma pulled back, running a hand through her hair and trying to hide the flush that colored her cheeks. Robbie reached out but Jemma took a step back.

“We need to get out of here before they come back.”

Pulling his hand back Robbie nodded and followed her lead.

“And as soon as we’re somewhere safe, you owe me a damn explanation.”

“Yes ma’am.”

Shedding his recognizable jacket off and draping it over an arm, Robbie stayed one step behind his bodyguard wondering how he was going to explain any of this.

Ship that is most misunderstood: 💢

Don’t think I really understand this prompt, ironically. Guess if I had to pick one, it’d be Jancy (Stranger Things)? I see a lot of people viewing this ship as a fantasy cliche of the antisocial guy getting together with the popular girl. For me, I liked Jonathan and Nancy together simply because they really were better for each other. Nancy and Steve were awful to each other and the chemistry between Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton was just a lot stronger (the actors are even dating in real life).

So, I didn’t really get why there was so much hoopla about the two of them, the pairing made sense with the show.

Ship that you used to have as an OTP: 💙

Okay, gonna make some people mad tonight. It’s Fitzsimmons. 

Back in the day, I loved Fitz and Simmons’ dynamic together and I was really rooting for them to become a couple. However, season 3 (aka, the worst AOS season) really ruined the ship for me. I wasn’t invested at all in the Will Daniels love triangle subplot and it felt like the show reduced Fitz and Simmons to just their ship. I went from wanting to see them get together to wanting them to just do anything else outside of their relationship.

And the other seasons didn’t help. Ever since they got together, it feels like the writers are stuck in one mode for writing Fitz and Simmons. One gets into trouble, the other has to save them, one gets into trouble, the other has to save them, insert dialogue about how they’ll find each other no matter what the circumstances, insert dialogue from the other characters talking about how much Fitzsimmons are the embodiment of love, blah blah blah, rinse and repeat.

It’s kinda sad but the most interesting thing the show has done with Fitz since season 3, at least for me, was the Doctor arc. And with Simmons, it was her becoming the second-in-command of SHIELD. Part of the reason was those subplots didn’t have to do with their relationship (at least initially).

So there. I don’t mind them as a couple but they’re no longer OTP status. I just want to see them do literally anything else outside of their relationship.
