MOST ICONIC BIRD CALL BRACKET: ROUND 1: MOURNING DOVE vs. WHITE CROWNED SPARROW
IN THE BLUE CORNER, hailing from your local park, we have the feathered fighter, the flying phenomenon, the mourning dove!
the mourning dove may be mourning, but it's ready to bring the pain to any opponent that steps into the ring. one of the most abundant birds in north america, this opponent is named after its doleful, unassuming call, a series of soft coos. this bird may be gentle, but don't let its soft demeanor fool you. this bird is a fighter!
IN THE RED CORNER, we have the king of the ring, the white crowned sparrow!
with its striking black and white head and sweet melodic calls, this opponent is truly a sight to behold. but this bird is here to show it's not just a pretty face. it's not just here to compete, it's here to win.
I have compiled my almost 500 animal call recordings and put them on the web archive and itch.io for people to easily download for use in video games and movies, as public domain!
You are explicitly encouraged to download and share these! Use them for games, audio books, music, movies, educational stuff, anything you want! share the link on other sites too!
Here's my general itch.io page where you can see everything
As of 10/06/2023, there' 490 total!
I'll also add them to Itch.io so people can leave tips if they want and that link will be added to this post, but if you're able to, please donate to the Web Archive!
The itch.io files will be sorted by species!
Here's a few links for specific species. I was going to put them all but there's too many lol...
American Crow Calls (30)
Barred Owl Calls (25)
Belted Kingfisher (1)
Blue Jay Calls (17)
Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher (12)
Also reminder that all my photos on iNaturalist are public domain :) I've observed 1,339 species as of January 7th 2024!
As are all my youtube videos. I even made a playlist just for videos I took specifically to be stock videos :)
So, this is bothering me and I wanna talk about it...
I just saw a Peta ad featuring barn owl screams, claiming that these are their screams of agony at whatever the university keeping them is doing to them.
Apparently, Peta is banking on city folk not knowing that horrible screaming is simply what Barn owls sound like. The barn owls aren't in distress; they just normally sound like horrible death screams.
Look up "Barn owl calls". You will find lots of audio and footage of horrible, ear-splitting screams coming from barn owls which are simply chilling most of the time.
MOST ICONIC BIRD CALL BRACKET: ROUND ONE: COMMON LOON vs. BLACK CAPPED CHICKADEE
IN THE BLUE CORNER, we have the master of the waves, the king of the lake, the COMMON LOON!
this bird is a true lunatic. this bird is a true master of the water, and his haunting calls can be heard echoing across the lakes and ponds of north america. this is a fierce competitor that always gives 110% in the ring. get ready for some aquatic action, folks, because the common loon is about to take flight and deliver some serious punishment to its opponent.
IN THE RED CORNER, we have the high-energy, high-flying, and high-pitched wrestler, the black capped chickadee!
this cold-weather bruiser is well loved among backyard birders for its charming chirps and its boldness around humans - excited fans report being able to feed chickadees by hand. this little dynamo's calls are highly complex, able to communicate different types of information to members of its flock. most well-known is the "chick-a-dee-dee-dee" call that gives this wrestler its name. it sounds simple, but this call has been the subject of research since the 1970s due to its complexity. this call can be arranged in different patterns to communicate information about threats from predators and coordinate group movements. watch out, because the black capped chickadee is one fierce competitor that won't back down from any challenge.
There's a pack of them, living in the tunnels outside of town. Two big ones, and maybe a litter. No one knows what they are, or how the hell they got here. All I know, is that if you hear birds laughing in the shadows, it's too late...they've found you.
I was inspired by a recent dinosaur horror thread on Twitter.
All the noises, screeches, clicks, etc. are made by my voice. The only edits I did was adding the echo/ambience sound to the background and cleaning up the audio.
