A Short List of Doves In The USA That You May Confuse With Each Other
Tumblr media
Mourning Dove Zenaida Macroura
Year-round native across most of the USA, with breeding populations up into Canada, and non-breeding populations extending into Mexico. Least Concern, plentiful, and often hunted for meat though hunting does little to lessen it's numbers. There is often a whistling sound heard when the mourning doves land and take off - it is not a call but rather a sound made by the feathers of the wings themselves.
Distinguishing features: Distinctive mournful woo-OOO-wooo, wooo, wooo call, occasionally, clean pale coloring of head and neck, darker wings with dark spots. Click here to hear!
Tumblr media
Eurasian Collared Dove Streptopelia decaocto
European and Asian native, was introduced to North America, Japan and the Carribean. It is invasive in USA.
Distinguishing features: A quick, rolling sort of goo-GOO-goo call, similar to a rock dove coo. Also, they make a loud HAH sound when taking off or landing. Click here to hear!
Tumblr media
White-Winged Dove Zenaida asiatica
White winged doves are native to the very southern parts of the USA and to Mexico and the Carribean.
Distinguishing features: Bright red eye surrounded by blue skin, brownish feathering with a dark stripe below the cheek on each side of the nect, the bold white stripe along the leading edge of the wings.
Tumblr media
Common Ground Dove Columbina Passerina
Small dove species native to the southernmost parts of the following: California, Southern Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida in the USA, most of Mexco and Central America, and the northern parts of South America including Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, small parts of Peru and Ecuador and parts of northern Brazil.
Distinguishing features: Small size, overall brownish coloring with dark mahagony primaries and dark spots that glisten blue on the wings. Similar in some ways to the Mourning Dove but has a much shorter tail and is smaller.
Tumblr media
Inca Dove Columbina Inca
Native to southern parts of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, Mexico, and parts of Central America.
Distinguishing Features: Pale coloring overall with a distinctive "scale' like edge on the feathers of the body. Noticeably smaller than the well known Rock Dove/Pigeon, and shorter overall than the mourning dove.

oh woo i submitted red eyed vireo so early on cus i had like, just heard it (according to merlin) out on a walk for the first time that day!! what are some cool things people should know about those guys, if youd like to share??
I'm gonna link their All-About-Birds and American Bird Conservancy pages bc they will have infinitely more info than I could put but the basic summary is: theyre common, they're constantly singing, and I am full of love for them!!!
I got into vireos pretty quick when I started banding because theyre very different from the other small songbirds we'd catch, mainly warblers. Vireos have blue bills and feet/legs, and almost always have slight hooks to their bills, like a shrike. When we would take photos before release, vireos always seemed very intent on following your gaze rather than immediately attempting to fly away, which gave the impression that they were very conscious in watching me rather than panicking (flycatchers) or accepting their fate with a blank-face (warblers).
I have a soft spot for REVIs in particular because they dominated my second field season. It was 2020, we were hearing about birds having boom-years and were hoping it was related to humans hunkering down, and we caught over 1000 red-eyed vireos alone that fall. One was a 9-year-old recap, which is incredible considering most songbirds arw lucky to get to 7!
I'm not 100% sure they'll be in the poll since Im for sure including a different Very Common but Overlooked american bird and it would feel too biased to have two of them, but have no fear- a different vireo was also submitted!!

can we talk about Phil and Jaiden today and their interactions after Jaiden finally shows her wings because I’m going crazy.
Jaiden showing off her wings for the first time to Phil, and Phil both happy for her and also insanely jealous, because why did she get to keep her wings, while his got clipped so badly he needs his backpack to counterbalance the weight he lost - or at least the weight he looses having to keep them close to his back.
and the whole time they’re talking in a group, hanging around spawn, Jaiden is perched somewhere above the group. up in a tree, moving from branch to branch, or against the wall, or right on the top of that lamppost. Phil, on the other hand, stays sat on the bench the entire time. grounded.
and every time Jaiden hops from perch to perch, he looks specifically at her. zooms in whiles she’s sat on the lamppost even as he continues conversation. its such a small detail but really helps punch in just how much Philza can’t let it go, can’t stop wishing that he could do the same.

How would you describe the kingdom in your medieval fantasy au? I'm so curious about its rules and society
ok i need to put this down somewhere so im gonna take this as the opportunity to do such bc this things been brewing in my cranium-
The kingdom is a fairly young one, destroyed a few hundred years ago by a falling asteroid, it created a crater in its place. Few survived but those who did instilled the fear of the sky and what dwells in it to those who remained. So anything from the sky is no good, this includes birds. Things that aren't grounded basically. They also blamed it on magic and that a evil magic moon god did this to them, sending one of its children down to tear down their home.
the interesting thing is- they didn't relocate. they cleared what remained of the asteroid, using the stone as their new foundation. They say this is like showing their power over what tried to destroy them or whatever. but yea they built their new kingdom in the crater. Now I hear you saying 'what abt when it rains? wouldn't everything flood?' your right. but you see, they hate what dwells above, they covered the top. its flat. the kingdom is flat up top. (besides those who don't live at the heart of the kingdom- like farmers who need land n such)) Everything is illuminated by thousands of lanterns that carry a flame said to be of the very asteroid that created this pit. This is yet again them taking power over what crushed their kingdom all those years ago. (flame that never dies? doesn't sound very grounded to me mr kingdom..) Those at the crown seemingly hate magic and any form of 'ungrounded' thinking. They are tolerant to those who are half human but if you are deemed too 'monstrous' they lose that tolerance very quickly. rumors are that the kingdom in recent years has started getting double standards for what they allow in their home. aka the head guard being 'half monster' (hes a bug. hes literally a whole bug. there's no human there at all) when the people thought entrusting that care to someone unlike them would be unthinkable, but surprisingly they've been safer these past years with him at the helm.
also yea most of the kingdom is this purply rock cause of this, as well as the flame in the lanterns. despite it being underground it manages to be fairly bright !
OH YEA one of their symbols is a stylized lotus/flame (lotus' can be seen as a symbol of rebirth and that put in place of the asteroid's flames makes for a good cycle like a phoenix sorta)) (this design is seen on Carmine's armor/ alt version on the bg guards))
this is just some stuff thats been in my head as of late that i havent gotten round to writing down.

the continuous focus on birds and birdsong in monstrous regiment is one of my fave bits just because we know the only reason polly has all that background knowledge is bc of paul. and even when she has that moment of not wanting to admit that she wants to get paul back partially for selfish reasons she was still the person in his life that paid attention enough to remember everything he loved/knew about birds lol. he's not really haunting the narrative he's just kind of chilling back there but ANYWAY lol polly perks could do antigone

the black scrub-robin is a large passerine bird native to portions of africa and asia. as their name implies, they enjoy hiding amongst dry scrubland, and they are frequently found in savanna habitat. they are a striking all-black bird with white barring on the undersides of their tails, which are often held upright.

Recognise these guys? When crossing the bridge from Riverwood, it's not uncommon for a flock of dark coloured birds with red wing-markings to burst free from one of the pine trees.
These birds are modelled after the male Red-Winged Blackbird. Is it weird that they're only males? Maybe not, the Red-Winged Blackbird is often found in all-male flocks during spring.
Unlike their real-world counterparts however, when observed closely the Skyrim bird appears to have an extra set of eyes below the first...
Tumblr media
Not just found in Riverwood, these birds activate in a few other locations around the Skyrim forests. I've found one source saying there's supposedly six places they appear.
Have you seen them anywhere else?

ring in the new year with me by sharing something you love about birds? <3 submit a bird here and it will automatically be added to the site! click or hover over the icons to see what other people love about birds, and filter the type of stuff shared using the menu at the bottom. note that the site is NOT responsive; I'm new to coding and have no idea what I'm doing there. soo, this is best viewed on a desktop/laptop, or on some (maybe, hopefully) smaller screens using landscape orientation. :)

Hello!! welcome the the only place YOU can decide on the best species of pigeon!!!
I like polls, I REALLY like pigeons, I couldn't find anyone else making a tournament for them, so I decided to do it! I have no idea if I will get enough people for this to work great, but hopefully it will be fun even if it is just me and my friends voting on these.
there are a lot of different species in family Columbidae. and I am using the 352 recognized by The International Ornithological Committee. hopefully there are no mistakes in the polls, because there are a lot of pigeons to sort through.
this will not be seeded or really organized in anyway, because my hands hurt too much to do that. so I will just be going in order of the list I am copy-pasting the names from. (the one on the wikipedia page for the list of pigeon species)
I will be doing 5 polls a day starting on April 26 (unless something comes up and I can't do one for that day, but that is unlikely I have a lot of free time), and each poll will include a photo of the pigeon (when one is available) and a brief description of what makes the pigeon cool/why you should vote for it!
inspired by:
@supremebirdbracket @prettiestcolours @who-do-i-know-this-man @autismswagsummit @ultimatebugpoll @ultimatepinkgirl and others.
and tagging @tournamentdirectory for good measure

2023 reads
The Deep Sky
scifi mystery thriller
on a deep space mission traveling from an environmentally devastated earth with hope to restart humanity elsewhere
when they’re halfway, an explosion kills 3 crew and pushes them off course
the only witness is the Alternate who has no specific role, and she has to figure out who caused it & if they might continue to sabotage, while they're figuring out a way to get back on course with limited resources
flips between present and the past: of her childhood and training for the mission, her identity struggles, and relationship with her mother
questions the ethics of ‘restarting’ humanity elsewhere vs putting resources into fixing earth
#the deep sky#yume kitasei#aroaessidhe 2023 reads#i really loved this!!!!!#very intense but also a lot of interesting character introspection#love the virtual reality AI aspect!!!! though I do feel like. in the end I was expecting it to go way further with it?#(basically like instead of seeing the inside of the ship all the time they can 'be' in forests or aquariums or whatever)#no romance#(there’s side lesbians; and one flashback scene where she briefly wonders about kissing a random person; that's it)#emotional core about her mother and brother and best friend !!#i like that it gets into the flaws of 'humanity's last hope on another planet' bc like. yeah in real life things....don't work like that...#why is there zero acknowledgement that the concept of every one of them being expected to give birth being extremely fucked up?#like obviously everyone on board is there because they agreed with that but there’s not a single flashback of#when they found out that information; or mention of someone questioning it...#(for example a character mentions that they hid their mental health/use of a therapy animal bc they wouldn't have been let in and the -#eugenics around that is iffy to say the least)#but to me. pregnancy is horrifying and nobody questioning that was weird.#also there’s supposedly 80 people on board but we get to know less than 10 of them which felt a bit strange at points#Also! I love the cover. I can’t find the designer (the book info only credits the internal lllustrator..)#also: bird facts!
