#788: umlauts are found all across the world, but they started in german. the name basically means "changed sound" because, well, it changes the sound of the vowel. originally, they'd be written as digraphs such as Goethe ("gUHh-ta", as opposed to Gothenburg "gOth-anbuhhg") and this remained in dutch and old english. but because Efficiency™, germans started writing the second half of the phoneme on top of the first. so bluomen became blůmen, for example. this remains in Scandinavian alphabets and sometimes in Czech. but that wasn't enough for german: they simplified all diacritics to two little dots: schoen* became schön, bluomen became blümen, etc. obviously Goethe is a name so didn't change (compare to Gödel).

So I learned German for 4 years in school, 2 in high school and 2 in University. The latter was quite a step up and a bit rough. I was doing Duolingo a lot until Everything Happened and then fell off it. It’s been a while since I did much besides open Google Translate and put my thoughts down in German to see if I remember the words/spellings of things… like keys…

Tonight I opened Duo again and it’s reviewing me. It said “Hallo & Tschüss” and I am legit almost gonna cry you guys HFJDJD My uni prof was so nice and adorable and having him say Tschüss all the time always made me very happy and now I’m very happy again!!!

Legit, on a quiz my prof wanted us to supply the German word for Spring (Frühling) but I couldn’t remember it… I wrote “Blümen Zeit” (Flowers Time) and he gave me half credit 😂😂💕

Чаще всего - для украшения праздника, для декорации стола или помещения. На праздник букеты дарят редко. От немецкого мужчины вообще большая редкость получить букет. Friendly reminder that weekends are sacred and official market days. 💖 It’s that time of the week when you can go get your cut flowers. Hydrangeas are gorgeous and they last longer than most — especially if you take care of them well. Here’s how I extend their life at home: • I cut off at least 5cm from the stem and dip the ends in boiling water. Let sit for a few minutes and watch the petals perk up. • In my vase, I add flower food which you can buy from @blume2000.de or any flower shop. It’s basically a concoction of nutrients that will extend the life of your blooms but if you have no access to it, a couple of spoonfuls of sugar will suffice. • Don’t forget to change the water in your vase every other day! Heute die Bach-Nelkenwurz (Geum rivale) oder auch Kaminfegerchen - eine wintergrüne krautige Pflanze kommt in ganz Europa vor, ausser im Mittelmeerraum. Dieser Wurz blüht von April bis Juli. Ich fand sie im Garten hinterm Haus der Eltern. Glebe Blüten reckten sich der Linse entgegen und wollten aufgenommen werden. Die Wurzel wird als natürliches Heilmittel verwendet. Sie wirkt unter anderem antibakteriell, schweißtreibend, entzündungshemmend und zusammenziehend und wird bei Magen und Darmerkrankungen und fieberhaften Infekten eingesetzt. Für die antibakterielle Wirkung sind Triterpene und Flavonoide verantwortlich. Kommt gut in den Abend und noch besser durch die Nacht und in den Morgen!
