BLACK SAILS • IX. | XXXVI.
2.01 "So this is the lesson… the pirates of New Providence Island are incorrigible, dedicated to mayhem. To attempt to address this subject is doomed to defeat from the outset." "It's not him I wanted you to see. [No mercy! Go all the way to hell!] It's them." 4.08 "Those are the pirates. They've inhabited the east bank, across from Springett Island for years. The governor promises this is the year he'll chase them off, but there they are. Seven major shipping concerns in the city here. In less than 10 years, more goods will move through here than any English-speaking port outside London."

The thing with Black Sails is that it's driven by Schrodinger's love. Love is everywhere, in every crevice of the story, and it simultaneously doesn't matter and matters too much. Flint loved Thomas and Thomas loved Flint and Flint loved Miranda and Miranda loved Thomas and Thomas loved Miranda and Miranda loved Flint and Jack loved Anne and Anne loved Jack and and Anne loved Max and Max loved Anne and Max loved Eleanor and Eleanor loved Max and Eleanor loved Charles Vane and Charles Vane loved Eleanor and Charles Vane loved Edward Teach and Edward Teach loved Charles Vane and Silver loved Madi and Madi loved Sliver and Madi loved the Maroon Queen and the Maroon Queen loved Madi and the Maroon Queen loved Mr. Scott and Mr. Scott loved the Maroon queen and Mr. Scott loved Madi and Madi loved Mr. Scott and Peter Ashe loved Abigail Ashe and Abigail Ashe loved Peter Ashe and Mrs. Hudson love her children and and Mrs. Hudson loved Eleanor and Eleanor loved Woodes Rogers and Woodes Rogers loved Eleanor and Silver loved Flint and Flint and loved Silver and at the end none of that loved mattered. Except that it did. In the eyes of the world, the larger picture, that love didn't matter, it was a weakness, and stumbling block, and danger, and it very much didn't and was, and how much was ruined and broken and ripped to pieces because of that love? And yet? That love causes some of the most meaningful things to happen, things that, again, have no standing or place in the eyes of the outside world. Things that do not matter when everything is set an done, but yet they do. They do. Flint defending Thomas. The happiness Max and Eleanor shared once. "We'll be partners until they put us in the fucking ground." The vengeance Flint visited on Charlestown for Miranda. The vengeance Teach tried to visit for Charles' sake. The fucking inscription from Thomas to Flint in Marcus Aurelius. The war Madi wanted. Madi's fondness for her father. How Charles loved Eleanor. The love the men had for Silver. The closeness, the utter something Flint and Silver shared. The book laid on Miranda's porch. The way Peter Ashe cradled Abigail's face when he sees her. Anne's kiss when she finds Jack in the overturned carriage. "there is nothing important that does not include you." Marion Guthrie's dream of teaching Eleanor along the river. Mr. Scott's ongoing campaign to protect his family. Miranda's desperate bids to protect Flint and Thomas that all go unheeded. The way Woodes Rogers did love Eleanor. And on and on and on and on and on and it doesn't matter, not any of it. Because the world washed by and things unfolded the way they did, and most of that love ended up doomed and ruined and twisted and for all accounts, meant nothing. Yet there would be no story without it.

Why Max Deserves Everything
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sisterhood is real in Nassau. Women, specifically prostitutes, are the only ones who are truly loyal to each other. The ally that she has in Idelle is a significant part of why Max is actually the best captain on Nassau.

I heard someone say Black Sails was what straight people wanted queer representation to be because of its tragedy and uh, I'm sorry, but what?
Was it perfect? No. I personally disagreed with the use of rape scenes and I noticed that they included sex scenes between lesbians, but not gay men, which could have been due to bad reasons. (I don't want to say for certain as one couple simply may have had less room for that, but let's be real, the fetishization of lesbians and the way toxic gender norms seep into any male expression of affection are both real things.)
That said, I disagree that the tragic fates of many LGBT characters means it's bad representation or aimed primarily at straight people. The thing about Black Sails is that it has many tragic characters. LGBT people aren't singled out. Yes, sometimes people want LGBT people to suffer, but that's so they can pity them. Nothing about the LGBT characters in this show is pitiful. They fight back about the homophobia they face. People who want to pity LGBT people don't typically want to see them fighting back against the oppression they face.
You can personally prefer the happy stuff. That's fine!! If your preference for queer media is light, happy escapism, then that's great and you should enjoy it to the fullest! But it's also okay that some people want Black Sails. Queer stories can exist in many forms.

So I finished watching black sails last night and there's a specific something I've been thinking about that genuinely can't let me rest. It's one thing Max says when talking about Flint and his war, about how pointless it is because, she says, you can't truly change the world from the outside. You simply can't. The world is too large and too comfortable in its position. It's easy for the world to resist. Easy for it to take you down.
And I keep thinking about how in the end, between the first and the last episode nothing has changed, not truly. England still exists. Pirates do too. Nassau still needs a governor and the plan to integrate it back into 'civilised society' still exists and is underway. The world is still ruled by men. The world still needs its monsters. So what has changed, really?
You can't fight the world from the outside in. But maybe, just maybe you can fight it from the inside out. Piece by piece. England still exists. But Flint's gold still exists also. The pirates do exist and they are still the monsters in the children's stories but some of them are also now in positions of power, are now hiding behind important choices and are helping in the shaping of the future. Slowly. Piece by goddamned piece. It may not be outright visible, this change but it happened, it is happening. From the inside, in a way thay will make the world believe change was its idea in the first place.
Because in the end maybe you can change the world. Slowly. From the inside. And piece by piece.
