Dabls' MBAD African Bead Museum : Townhouse Renovation

Detroit-based artist and community activist Olayami Dabls is partnering with Los Angeles/Detroit-based design firm Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects [LOHA] and Allied Media Projects, on the renovation of townhouses at the African Bead Museum project on Detroit’s West Side.

This renovation will allow for free rotating exhibitions of African material culture from Dabls' extensive collection of beads and artifacts, as well as immersive public spaces for gathering and events.This space will further foster African-based arts education for local children through partnerships with schools and museums.

HISTORY OF THE BEAD MUSEUM

Here, ancient cultural artifacts are found in a mirrored townhouse next to a freeway. 

Here, beads are for sale that serve as a connection point to another culture.

Here, stories are told in sculptures outside using everyday objects, where any person can walk up and experience them. 

These elements create an environment of approachability - an essential asset to a culturally diverse city. 

A Place for Local Community

MBAD African Bead Museum began in 1994 as the culmination of the ideas of one man known as Olayami Dabls. Occupying almost an entire city block, the MBAD African Bead Museum houses 18 outdoor installations as well as the African Bead Gallery, N'kisi House and African Language Wall. 

Born of his own visual cosmology, Dabls' MBAD African Bead Museum is a quiet revolution that sparks a vital conversation with global and local audiences. Recently designated as a "jewel" of Michigan, the bead gallery, mirrored buildings and massive outdoor sculptural installations bring 35,000 visitors a year of astounding diversity, from all over the world. It's uniqueness is its strength!

Set in a neighborhood in Detroit's West Side, Dabls' MBAD African Bead Museum encourages local community access to cultural artifacts. The museum exists within three townhouses, and includes large outdoor sculptural installations and the N'Kisi House, which holds the African Languages Wall on its exterior. One townhouse holds the active Bead Gallery, while the other two are currently storage space for the collection of African Material Culture. The three townhouses were donated in 2001 by Detroiter Ardie Riddick who believed in Dabls’ vision to educate the public about the vast numbers of artifacts and ornamentation reflecting African life and our story. 

LET'S TALK ABOUT WHAT'S HAPPENING!This Campaign

Thanks to a generous grant from the Knight Foundation and the support of Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects [LOHA], a Los Angeles/Detroit based architectural design firm, we were able to put a new roof on the houses and make repairs to structural damage incurred over the years.

Now, LOHA is engaged in revitalizing the museum and in securing Dabls' artwork as well as his significant collection of African artifacts. Through this Patronicity campaign, we will complete the renovation to the interiors of the three townhouses, making way for an exhibition space, multi-use community space, an artist-in-residence, and a remodeled bead store.

Through partnership with Allied Media Projects, the museum will also become a primary site for the local and national audiences that convene in Detroit each June as part of the Allied Media Conference, or AMC. Approaching its 20th year, the AMC brings together a vibrant community of people using media to incite change and celebrate diverse and inclusive identities. The renovation of the iconic Dabls' MBAD African Bead Museum and the 20th anniversary of the AMC offer an opportunity to solidify and connect Detroit’s unique spaces for creative exchange and cultivating our understanding of one another.

Together, the museum, Allied Media Projects, and LOHA will continue to uplift local culture and artistry, and reinforce national and local exchanges of creativity.

The Renovation of the Townhouses

The funding raised in this campaign will complete the renovation process that will include:

Repair and refinish interiors (including bead store, bathroom, and kitchen)

Build out new gallery spaces

Install ADA access ramp

Create accessible shelves in basement for collection storage

Create gathering spaces and flex spaces for community engagement and programming

This campaign will allow the museum to complete the renovations of the townhouse interiors and make possible the first Museum exhibit, Kuba textiles from the Democratic Republic of Congo, by Spring 2018.

Access to Culture is the Mission

The Museum weaves together the immense power and complexity of African heritage into a vital contemporary context that has engaged and attracted local and global audiences for years. A large portion of that audience are local students of all ages who enjoy learning about the arts in an accessible and dynamic manner. This campaign will provide much needed space to continue and broaden these arts educational programs for the local community.

Dabls creates artwork with traditional African imagery and storytelling, telling the stories of our present through a lens of cultural awareness. Synthesizing the past into the present, the Bead Museum creates a stirring and harmonious space of self-discovery and healing, empowering us to use our imagination, and teaching us about African culture through the language of beads. Exposure to the Museum via this new exhibition space for the African Material Collection will afford visitors an opportunity to see, talk, reflect upon and feel the past.

African Hair Threading

Hair Threading has been part of the Black hair scene for many generations. It consists of wrapping sectioned hair in thread. This method of wrapping the hair in thread strengthens the hair without excessive manipulation, which is beneficial for your strands. Not only does the style strengthen the hair, but it also promotes growth.

The style comes from Sub-Saharan African countries and grew its popularity in West Africa, particularly, South Nigeria. Learn more here

Bantu Knots and Hi-Top Fades

The Zulu people of southern Africa originated Bantu knots, a hairstyle where the hair is sectioned off, twisted, and wrapped in such a way that the hair stacks upon itself to form a spiraled knot (Source). Learn the history of Bantu Knots

The hi-top fade or flattop originated in the U.S. military around the ‘40s and ‘50s. By the mid-eighties, Black barbers began to reimagine the hairstyle, and due to its resemblance to Queen Nefertiti’s Empress headpiece, some speculated the hairstyle's origin. The hairstyle grew as a trend when worn by the like of Grace Jones, Doug E. Fresh, and Salt-N-Peppa.

Afro

As far as hairstyles go, there's nothing Blacker than the Afro. In the 1960s, after decades of subjecting themselves to European beauty standards, Black folks decided to take back their hair. This newfound self-acceptance was widely known as the Black Is Beautiful movement, which sprang from the Black Power movement. The 'fro was rocked by Angela Davis, Huey P. Newton, and Jesse Jackson while fighting oppression; the hairstyle quickly emerged as a symbol of Black beauty, liberation, and pride.

I think this is another one of those things that artists may not have considered, so let's open the floor!

To my Black readers: if you are commissioning (or could commission) an art piece of a Black person specifically- maybe yourself, a friend, a cool character, an OC, etc.- I am asking you:

What things do you consider before making the choice to go with that artist?

(And I'll go first in the tags, just so no one feels pressured or alone)

To my nonBlack readers, esp my artists who want to expand their mentality, skill set, and maybe future clientele: I want you to LISTEN to understand. Listen to what Black fans are looking for in terms of care in the depictions of ourselves. Even if it gets uncomfortable, that's something you can challenge yourself on, and even overcome!

oooooo white people in my replies really saying ‘I can excuse racism but I draw the line at homophobia’

Not surprised since this is the site that only talks about racism and thinks it’s a big deal when they see it demonstrated in the cartoons and comics they like *coughs* dungeonmeshi *coughs* (for example at least. I haven’t seen THIS many white ppl talk as in depth about racism on here as much as these fandom nerds, man. I stg. Like “Ohhhh, so you all DO acknowledge that racism is real? Just not in real life even if you could feel it slapping you in the face at high speed. Gotcha.” It’s crazy.

Tumblr is like, 90% white and is extremely centered around them. That’s why you barely see stuff that’s important to black and brown people ever trending here or being talked about. It has to be something incredibly huge to the point where even white people can’t ignore it like they usually do, to talk about it here.

They only talked about George Floyd here because the topic of his death became world news. Even people in other countries were talking about it. Before him, it was probably Ferguson and Trayvon Martin… most of them are still trying their best to ignore the genocides because it’s a “touchy subject.” What do you expect from white people who live in their own bubbles of comfort and refuse to pop it with a needle??? They find comfort in their privilege and faux ignorance (they love playing stupid to avoid conversations about important things outside of fandoms like, are these mfs born with half a brain dedicated to fandom or what.) That’s literally all these mfs make a big deal out of, especially on this annoying ass platform. The ao3 mfs will go to war for the site that allows racist ff and cp like it’s no big deal. I wonder how many people here even donated to the site while actively scrolling past dono posts from folks who really do need help. They act like they’re doing a civil service by defending this site that makes over the amount of it’s intended dono goal in minutes.

Then you already know as soon as you even bring up racism in the stuff they like, they start ganging up and harassing black bloggers especially, calling them TERFs and the whole nine. Anything to make that person look bad for being concerned about the racism that they have such an intense aversion to. God, it’s absolutely exhausting knowing that these people would have no problem choosing a cartoon character over your entire existence if they COULD. Isn’t that fucking sad, man?

some of you might be aware of this already, but early October, my eldest sibling & only sister suddenly passed away due to a seizure, she had been dealing with epilepsy her whole life.

this has been incredibly difficult for me, and my family. her passing was incredibly sudden, she was only 30.

for the past month or so ive been struggling to find any motivation to draw, and barely able to work.

she was the incredibly devoted owner of a doberman named Remi(Ramsey). Me and my sister traveled 4 hours to pick him up three years ago. He's a goofball who tears up socks and needs constant supervision. My parents love him, but I can tell he is a lot of work for two people who have fulltime jobs and have lived long lives.

I'm going to try to help them take care of him as much as possible, I feel that it's the least we can do to honor my sister's memory, since she loved him so deeply.

My sister always wanted a doberman, for years she would watch videos about dobermans and talk about them to anyone who would listen.

Remi wasn't easy to raise - I shared a room with my sister when she got him in 2020, she still worked a 9-5, five days a week, so I was his nanny for most of his difficult childhood. I was his chew toy for the first year of his life about - but that only made him bond closer to me. If he wasn't following my sister, I was choice #2. Dobermans are "velcro dogs", they were bred to guard their owners, and because of this, they are fiercely loyal. I've been moved out of my parent's place for going on 3 years, and my sister had just moved with Remi out a few months prior to her passing.

A week before my sister's sudden passing, we had to board Remi at my dog daycare job while my family and I took a trip out of state. When dropping him off, although he was happy to see me again for the first time in months, the moment my sister turned her back to him he began to panic. He got through the boarding all right but my coworkers told me he would cry and wait by the door for me or her. When my sister picked him up, they said he jumped all 80+lbs into her arms.

Since my sister's passing, Remi has been directionless. He's with my family, people he trusts, but he's bored, confused, and heartbroken. My sister would often take him to the dog park, social events, on runs, etc. but my parent's can't do that in their age. If my apartment allowed large dogs, I would take him, but I can't, and I see him maybe twice a month if possible.

Ramsey's Christmas List

I made a christmas list for him of things that might help my parents better take care of him. We're trying different food brands out because he struggles with frequent stomach issues, and we can't seem to figure out what food my sister was feeding him. This list is by no means a necessity for him, but I tried to add things to help with his boredom and keep him stimulated when my parents can't give him all their attention.

i do want to state that my family is capable of providing him with the essentials to live, we arent irresponsible. i would just like to help my parents out since a 3 year old 80-90lb doberman is a lot of work to be suddenly placed on them soley. And I worry for his health and well-being sometimes - Remi has a tendency to eat/tear random objects when he's bored.

In a remarkable twist of events, she was liberated from slavery by Captain Frederick E. Forbes of the British Royal Navy and became a goddaughter to Queen Victoria. She was married to Captain James Pinson Labulo Davies, a wealthy Lagos philanthropist.

I’ve always wanted to do a series on black classical singers for BHM, so here’s a sketch I squeezed in this week—a tribute to the great Marian Anderson!

Marian Anderson (February 27, 1897 – April 8, 1993) was an African-American opera singer and contralto. In 1939, after the Daughters of the American Revolution refused to allow Anderson to sing to an integrated audience in Washington, D.C, then First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and her husband President Franklin D. Roosevelt arranged for Anderson to perform an open-air concert on the Lincoln Memorial steps on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1939. She was able to deliver a critically acclaimed performance before an integrated crowd of more than 75,000 people, and a radio audience in the millions.
