Over the next days, I'll drop some bios to explain who all these people are and their role in this AU. Do note that NONE of this is canon to the pre-existing AUs or official universes unless their creators deem it as such.
I apologise in advance if your favourite AU or a favourite OC didn't get in, but do know that this is only the surface level of how massive the multiverse can be. And just remember the one golden rule of the multiverse:
In the multiverse, everything is canon!
Yeah, we don't talk about THAT stuff, though.

I want to get into Zatanna comics but I’m not sure where to start. What series do you recommend?
Hello! Don't worry, I can give you a short starting guide + some recommendations on this post so you can read without having to dive fully into thousands of issues (unless you want a detailed guide of more appearances).
The usual go to for any beginner is Zatanna (2010) by Paul Dini. It's her longest solo comic (16 issues) and it fits as a stand alone.
Tumblr media
If you are interested, I'm currently working in a masterlist reading guide of her appearances. Zatanna is a very old character, so a lot of her appearances are scattered as cameo and team books, so often finding what to read is hard. If you want to get a little further into her character, these options I'm about to mention are good as well. More under the cut because this is a long post.
- Secret Origins (1988) (volume 2) #27
Offers a summary about of Zatanna's origin in the DC universe. A bit old, so the scans can be blurry, but still a nice read.
Tumblr media
- Zatanna Special (1987) by Gerry Conway & Gray Morrow
Zatanna gets contacted by the ghost of her mother Sindella, which leads her to travel to secret city of the Homo Magi with her manager. A lot of details about her background are revealed her, it's one of my favourite comics for her.
Zatanna: Come Together (1993) by Lee Mars & Esteban Maroto
Tumblr media
Four issue mini in which Zatanna tries to get a fresh new start in San Francisco, temporally retiring from her superhero career. Unfortunately, she doesn't expect to find her stay disrupted by a supernatural threat infesting the city. Still one of my favourite comics of her and the art is amazing too. It also explores her background from her mother's side of the family, which is always good and underrated.
Zatanna: Everyday Magic (2003) by Paul Dini & Rick Mays (one shot)
Tumblr media
We see Zatanna in her best moment as a famous stage magician in a long tour. She seems to be doing great, but she still fights to have an ordinary personal life. Things get complicated when her former partner, John Constantine, shows up on her life once again.
This is a fun story! It's Zatanna only Vertigo solo book. There are some poorly aged jokes and the art is not everyone's cup of tea, but it's a fun light hearted read for everyone.
Zatanna: Seven Soldiers (2007) by Grant Morrison & Ryan Sook
Zatanna attends a superhero support group. Her powers are weak and she finds herself in a low spot in her life, but the arrival of a mysterious girl pushes her to go on a tripe to find her father's missing journals.
This mini series is part of a bigger event written by Morrison called Seven Soldiers of Victory, but it can be read as a stand alone. If you want further context, I recommend reading the event, though.
I really like this comic, though. I wish we got to see more of Zatanna's mentorship role.
Tumblr media
Black Canary & Zatanna: Bloodspell (2015) by Paul Dini & Joe Quinones.
A fun team up comic! It's an original graphic novel. I love Zee and Dinah's friendship.
Tumblr media
Wonder Woman: Agent of Peace (2020) #15
A fun team up issue with Diana and Zee spending quality time together.
Tumblr media
Justice League Dark (2011) (New52) & Justice League Dark (2018) (Rebirth)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, to clarify. I don't necessarily recommend the Justice League Dark books, but I'm incluiding them since most of Zee post new 52 appearances are in these two books which are...a mixed bag. Justice League Dark (new 52) wasn't of my liking with the exception of the last third of the whole book (Dematteis did a good job, probably the best out of the three writers heading the book). Earlier writers didn't know how to handle Zatanna, her personality is very watered down just as well as her abilities, and she isn't really given spotlight, leadership and full potential of her abilities until Dematteis takes the pen. I also don't enjoy how off was the characterisation of other characters of the book and the overall writing quality and pace, but that's a story for another post.
Justice League Dark (Rebirth) is a step up in quality from New52, but unfortunately it continues with the weird personality shift in Zatanna's personality and the a lackuster character design. As much as I love Diana, who is part of this team line up, I think Zatanna should have been given the leader role and the spotlight. Out of this book, I sincerely enjoyed Ram V's stage on the later half on this run, who deserved to stay longer on this title.
That said, you can take a look on these titles, but you know, at least you know what to expect.
Bonus: Graphic novels, webtoons and stand alone stories
Tumblr media
DC's new talent showcase (2018)
Truth and Justice (2020) #7 - 9
Zatannna & the Ripper (Available for Free in Webtoon, still ongoing)
Zatannna & House of Secrets (Kids graphic novel)
Batman: Urban Legends (#11-16)
Johnny Constantine & Mystery of the Meanest Teacher (she's a co protagonist here)

The Tibicena [native Gran Canarian folklore]
An angry dog, especially a wild one, can pose a serious danger to both people and livestock. So it comes as little surprise that large, evil dogs are a very common recurring motive in folktales and myths from around the world.
In the legends of the native population of Gran Canaria, a large monstrous dog called the Tibicena plays an important role. This creature takes the appearance of a large dog with long black fur and bright red eyes. Tibicenas were evil spirits and after the arrival of Europeans, the Tibicena was also known as a form of the devil, but in the belief system of the original inhabitants these monsters were descendants of Guayota, a kind of demon or major evil spirit. Though the people of Gran Canaria use dogs as guardians and pets, wild dogs are also known to attack herds of livestock (which was a problem considering these animals were often the owners’ sole means to make a living) and supposedly even break into tombs to eat human corpses. The evil mythical creature likely originated from these negative connotations.
The monsters were said to live in caves, and even today some of the caverns in Gran Canarias are referred to as a ‘den of the Tibicena’. At night, they left the comfort of these caves to hunt, attacking both people and animals alike.
The Tibicena is analogous to the Cancha of Tenerife. Note that it’s unclear whether the Tibicena is supposed to be a singular demonic entity or a species of monsters, as this seems to vary between different sources.

Black Canary 2015.
I am so conflicted on this series. It’s a good comic, in isolation (and the colouring in particular is fantastic).
However it’s not particularly good as a Dinah Lance comic.
Dinah. Dinah a sometime founding member of the JLA. Dinah a daughter and member of the JSA. Dinah the florist, the secret agent, one of the best martial artists on the planet. Dinah who learned the cost of service and vigilante work and policing in the way it affected both her parents.
Dinah just…decides to run off and join a band and abandon hero work?
I know she has a completely different origin and backstory and husband and arguably set of parents in new 52. But cmon.
I think if this comic were about a new character, I’d love it. If it felt more in conversation with Dinah’s background (if there were Great Frog references teased in it!) I'd enjoy it more. But it feels almost like someone came up with an original idea and retrofitted it to Dinah and made it fit by setting it in Gotham and making Kurt Lance...uh...timetravel to be old and establish the band to foil some evil alien plan and then a demon. A lot of the bits that are about Dinah and her friends and family feel very tacked on rather than integral.

A Film A Year
Tumblr media
Going through an old hard drive today I found this almost-completed list from 2015 in which I'd set myself the task of choosing a single film for each year of the preceding hundred. It was interesting to see in what ways my tastes had changed and just how many more films I'd discovered and fallen in love with in the meantime.
Anyways, I thought I'd finish it off and update it to the present: I very much tried to keep it to just one film per year, but the competition some years was just too high so they've had to share joint first places:

how old is dinah?
asking someone the age of any comic book character is like opening pandora's box.
HOWEVER!! incredibly deep cut and who knows if this is actually treated as canon, but in issue #12 of Black Canary's post-Flashpoint mini series, thanks to a bunch of timeskips (and basic subtraction) it's established that this comic takes place when Dinah is 26
Tumblr media
But, once again, I doubt that anyone is currently treating that run from 2015 as canon. Hell, I'm pretty sure Dinah's a legacy character again so that throws out much of what was established here anyways.
As of right now, Prime-Earth Dinah is confirmed to have been an established crime-fighter for quite awhile. Green Arrow (2023) confirmed that she (and by extension Oliver's) history as previous JLA members pre-Flashpoint is still kinda sorta canon??
Tumblr media
So yeah, this is all to say uh early‐mid 30's probably

4, 11, and 14 for the book asks (if they haven't been asked already!) :D
4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?
I haven't found any new ones that I'd immediately call auto-buy authors after just one book, but I read AM McLemore and RF Kuang for the first time this year and have several other books from both of them on my tbr. And it's a bit more difficult to get a feel on comic writers right away since it is such a collaborative medium, but I really like what I've seen from Chris Claremont, Eve Ewing, G Willow Williams, and Emily Kim
11. What was your favorite book that's been out for a while, but that you just now read?
The Wall by Marlen Haushofer translated by Shaun Whiteside is oldest 5 star read I've had this year, having come out in 1963, but I also loved The Color Purple by Alice Walker (1982), and all of the Discworld books I read this year, the most recent of which was published posthumously in 2015.
14. What books do you want to finish before the year is over?
Well the only thing I have that I've started so far is Frankenstein, but my tbr for the rest of December includes Mornings in Jenin by Susan Abulhawa (picking this one up from the library today); Against the Loveless World by Susan Abulhawa; The Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Cañas; When the Angels Left the Old Country by Sacha Lamb; You Exist Too Much by Zaina Arafat; Kissinger's Shadow: The Long Reach of America's Most Controversial Statesman by Greg Grandin; Several People Are Typing by Calvin Kasulke; You Feel It Just Below the Ribs by Jeffrey Cranor and Justina Matthewson; Green Arrow/Black Canary vol 3: A League of Their Own by Judd Winick, Wayne Faucher, Mike Norton, Robin Riggs, and Diego Barreto; Sideways vol 1: Steppin' Out by Justin Jordan, Dan Didio, and Kenneth Rocafort; Batman and the Outsiders vol 2: The Snare by Chuck Dixon, Carlos Rodriguez, Julián López, and Ryan Benjamin; and Static Shock vol 1: Supercharged by Scott McDaniel, John Rozum, and Marc Bernardin

Salty Comics Ask Game #2, 3, 7, 26 Dinah Lance, 28
2. What character death for the sake of drama was the worst?
Already answered!
3. Who is your most hated comics writer?
I'm going to have to say Tom King. There are a number of writers I loathe and others that I'm just tired of, but King has the unique combination of "the most wretched takes imaginable on my most beloved characters" and "has learned just enough comics theory to make his work look Important and Deep so that the industry will keep celebrating his self-indulgent nihilism." Dear comics critics: just because it's in a nine panel grid doesn't make it smart.
7. What “throwaway” character could they have done more with?
Already answered but if we need another one, you know I want Koryak back.
26. What’s the worst costume design for [x]?
Honestly, I hate this one:
Tumblr media
See, there was a 2015 Black Canary series where Dinah was in a band, and Annie Wu gave her a succession of awesome clubwear outfits, none of which was meant to be her single solitary superhero costume. And then a handful of straight male artists picked up one of the later outfits in that series, decided it was her costume, altered it badly, and the poor woman's been stuck in it for seven years. What is going on with those straps? Stop it!
28. What’s a popular fandom take you disagree with about [x]?
I don't know if this is also supposed to be about Dinah, but I will answer for her anyway with a) she is not Roy's mom, their relationship is much more complex than that and not easy to categorize, and b) I hate the fandom trope that she's the superhero therapist, which I think comes from YJTV? I will back button out of a story where she is providing therapy to Jason for no reason.

Big birds - Tweety (Hyde style), Beaky Buzzard and Foghorn Leghorn in a lineup together with DC’s Black Canary (to be inserted later by comic book artist Pia Guerra) for a variant comic book cover from 2015. This was one of 25 covers featuring DC characters and Looney Tunes that I provided drawings for. DC art director Mark Chiarello supplied me with rough concepts for the covers showing how everything should work, and I submitted drawings, sometimes multiple versions, of the characters, which were then passed on to the DC cover artists to be included in the final.

New telescope to detect gravitational wave events A new telescope, made up of two identical arrays on opposite sides of the planet, will track down sources of gravitational waves. The Gravitational-wave Optical Transient Observer (GOTO), led by the University of Warwick, signals a new era of gravitational wave science. Deployed across two antipodal locations to fully cover the sky, GOTO will scour the skies for optical clues about the violent cosmic events that create ripples in the fabric of space itself. GOTO began when the UK's University of Warwick and Australia's Monash University wanted to address the gap between gravitational wave detectors and electromagnetic signals. Now the international collaboration has 10 partners, six of which are in the UK. GOTO has received £3.2 million of funding from the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) to deploy the full-scale facility. "This is really encouraging from an international cooperation perspective that the UK is willing to support this project, with new telescopes to be built in Australia," said Associate Professor Duncan Galloway, from the Monash University School of Physics and Astronomy. "The new site gives us a massive improvement in our chance to observe the counterparts of gravitational wave detections. Detecting the optical counterparts promptly is a key factor in how much we can learn from gravitational wave detections. The first such event, GW170817, was identified in 11hours; but our GOTO network can be on sky and autonomously observing the field within minutes." Long hypothesized as a by-product of the collision and merger of cosmic behemoths such as neutron stars and black holes, gravitational waves were finally detected directly by the Advanced LIGO (Laser Interferometry Gravitational-Wave Observatory) in 2015. Since 2015, there have been many subsequent detections but, since observatories like LIGO can only measure the effects of the gravitational wave as it passes through our local patch of space time, it can be difficult to track down the source's point of origin. GOTO is designed to fill this observational gap by searching for optical signals in the electromagnetic spectrum that might indicate the source of the GW—quickly locating the source and using that information to direct a fleet of telescopes, satellites and instruments at it. As most GW signals involve the merger of massive objects, these 'visual' cues are extremely fleeting as must be located as quickly as possible, which is where GOTO comes in. The idea is that GOTO will act as sort of intermediary between the likes of LIGO, which detect the presence of a gravitational wave event, and more targetable multi-wavelength observatories that can study the event's optical source. Professor Danny Steeghs of the University of Warwick, GOTO's principle investigator, said: "There are fleets of telescopes all over the world available to look towards the skies when gravitational waves are detected, in order to find out more about the source. But as the gravitational wave detectors are not able to pinpoint where the ripples come from, these telescopes do not know where to look." Following the successful testing of a prototype system in La Palma, in Spain's Canary Islands, the project is deploying a much expanded, second-generation instrument. Two telescope mount systems, each made up of eight individual 40 cm (16 inch) telescopes, are now operational in La Palma. Combined, these 16 telescopes cover a very large field of view with 800 million pixels across their digital sensors, enabling the array to sweep the visible sky every few nights. These robotic systems will operate autonomously, patrolling the sky continuously but also focusing on particular events or regions of sky in response to alerts of potential gravitational wave events. Professor Steeghs continued: "The award of £3.2 million of STFC funding was critical in allowing us to build GOTO, as it was always envisaged to be; arrays of wide-field optical telescopes in at least two sites so that these could patrol and search the optical sky regularly and rapidly. "This will allow GOTO to provide that much-needed link, to give the targets for bigger telescopes to point towards." In parallel, the team is preparing a site at Australia's Siding Spring Observatory, which will contain the same two-mount, 16 telescope system as the La Palma installation. The plan is to have both sites operational this year to be ready for the next observing run of the LIGO/Virgo gravitational wave detectors in 2023. The optical search for gravitational wave events is the next step in the evolution of gravitational wave astronomy. It has been achieved once before, but with GOTO's help it should become much easier. If astronomers can locate convincing counterparts to gravitational wave signals, it will be possible to measure distances, characterize the sources, study their evolution and determine the environments they are formed in.
