i have fish instead of cat/dog bc apartment living, but i treat them like they are my cats and dogs, and everything they do is so so so cute, but they’re fish, so every post of them looks like this
I discovered that my kuhli loaches apparently play with empty baby snail shells like puppy toys, flinging them around and playing tug of war 😳 I caught Fletcher playing a bit on video, she and one of the other loaches were playing with the shell together originally
i love kuhli loaches so much. they are such goobers and i used to have some in my freshwater aquarium and i wanna keep them again someday. so imagine how thrilled i was when i found this AWESOME kuhli loach fursona!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
for moreii on af :D

Kuhli loach are a popular freshwater aquarium species known for their unique appearance and peaceful nature. These bottom-dwelling fish have long, slender bodies with distinctive black and brown stripes running the length of their bodies. Kuhli Loaches are social creatures and should be kept in groups of at least six to eight. They are shy and sensitive and require plenty of hiding places in the aquarium to feel secure. Kuhli Loaches are omnivores and will eat a variety of foods, including algae wafers, sinking pellets, and live or frozen foods. In terms of tank requirements, Kuhli Loaches prefer a well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding places and a soft, sandy substrate. They also require clean, well-oxygenated water with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5 and a temperature range of 75-86°F. Kuhli Loaches are peaceful fish and can be kept with other non-aggressive species, such as rasboras and tetras. However, they should not be kept with aggressive or territorial fish, as they are easily intimidated and can become stressed. When it comes to care tips, Kuhli Loaches are relatively low-maintenance fish. They do an excellent job of keeping aquariums clean by eating leftover food and other debris. However, they require a varied diet to ensure optimal health and should be fed a mix of commercial and live or frozen foods. Kuhli Loaches are also sensitive to water conditions and should be monitored closely for signs of stress or illness. Overall, with proper care and attention, Kuhli Loaches can be a fascinating and rewarding addition to any freshwater aquarium.
TIL you guys also like fish!!!! please let me introduce you to the rest of my fishy community!
first of all, these are my fish tanks:
this is a 20 gallon tall tank that I will be upgrading to a 37 long next year when I find out where I’m going for residency. the 5lb pressurized cannister is a CO2 tank that I use to inject carbon dioxide into the water (on a timer)! CO2 is the limiting “nutrient” for plant growth underwater in a tank like mine (with bright light and fertilizers added), so it helps encourage plant growth and more vibrant colors in plants with red and orange tones, as well as carpeting plants.
this is a 6.4 gallon tank that also has CO2 injection, and currently no fish because it is cycling (and will be for about 4 weeks). it will be her highness the betta fish’s new home once it is cycled, because she keeps murdering my shrimp in the community tank. once she is moved, I will probably get a pair of honey gouramis for the community tank.
this is one of the shrimp in question! she is pregnant. (eggnant, you might say.) I love her.
these are my kuhli loaches! I have 6 black and 6 banded. they are technically different species and the banded ones are much more shy. they spend a lot of time swimming circles along the glass and draping themselves over plants upside-down to make me think they are dead. they get very offended when you poke them to make sure they’re not dead.
I have 8 neon tetras. they’re all fat and extremely hard to take non-blurry photos of.
I also have 3 hillstream loaches, which are one of my favorite fish of all time. they’re juveniles that bred from a friend’s tank, and they look like tiny little stingrays that are frequently stuck to the side of the glass. they are aufwuchs-eaters which means they scrape algae and biofilm off the surfaces of things, but they also like sifting through sand and need sufficient protein (aka. not pure algae eaters).
here’s what they look like from the bottom:
I also have snails:
this is the biggest of my three nerite snails! I like nerites because they have bright colors and they don’t reproduce in fresh water. however, if you get a female (like this one), they WILL lay tiny white little sesame seed eggs everywhere, even though they can’t hatch. I used to have “pest” snails in the form of bladder snails and freshwater limpets but, uh, I have a total of 15 loaches in the tank, so. I no longer have pest snails and my loaches are all well-fed. :”)
thank u for coming to my ted talk. I love fish. I love my fish. please come talk to me about fish. I leave u with one last photo of her highness in all her glory:
Got a few new black Kuhli loaches (pangio oblonga) to add to the existing crew and they seem to be having a blast. Also expanded the ember tetra school and added Congo tetras, which may or may not have been a gamble.
Unfortunately for y’all, I’m kinda back on my fish/aquarium bullshit. So if you want to opt out, I tag with “planted aquarium saga” and other related tags.
sad to report one of my kuhli loaches passed away... probably because i ordered them online and the stress of travel... i was real panicked and thought maybe my water quality and levels were bad and assumed the other two died as well but they're fine. poor little guy. I do have to buy some more from somewhere they're supposed to be kept in groups min of 3. I know they sell black ones near me. well. petco will ship them in that is. Gonna check out if the giant aquairum store a drive away has any tomorrow.
So my Kuhli Loaches like to hang themself off the suction cup at the back of the tank.
Really like to hang off it.
Really, really like to hang off it...
So I added some more tubes and suction cups for them to hang out on!
But of course, even with the extra space, they still have to pile on top of each other. It's the Kuhli way. XD
(And yes, the Reticulated Hillstream Loach likes to hang out there too and the Kuhli's try to hang off him too XD)Photo of an aquarium showing an orange and black Kuhli Loach
Finally got the full stocking of water-puppers in the 29 gallon. Slightly more than I planned due to a few extra fishes being in the bag.
Joining the five flame tetras and four kuhli loaches are a happy, healthy school of ten Black Neon Tetras and nine Pygmy Corydoras! They're all juveniles just big enough to be safe around adult fish.
They are also the cutest damn critters. Watching them demolish a pinch of small pellets now. :D
