I'm having a lazy day today and didn't have any freshly processed pictures to share, so here's some previously processed older photos of deer that were sitting around in a folder.

A new viewpoint on antlers reveals the evolutionary history of deer (Cervidae, Mammalia)
fullview recommended!
something i've wanted to do for a while now. i've scoured the internet for something like this and can't find anything that compares all the different types of antlers together. except one recent study on their evolution, which is also very interesting on its own! i simplified it to provide a visual reference, while still trying to be scientifically accurate. some things differ between this and trophy scoring terminology like where the beam is and whatnot, so if something looks weird that's why.
small additional note, this study and others provide a lot of evidence that eld's deer should be in their own genus as it doesn't appear similar enough to barasingha and schomburgk's deer. however this doesn't seem to be adapted anywhere yet, so they're still in Rucervus for this guide.

followed a doe over a hillside and discovered another doe and three fawns. all of them were charmingly scruffy after the recent rain. two of the fawns had an intriguing light coat; uncertain if leucism or just a result of being wet.

Shout out to my cousin being completely 😑😑😑 bc I was so delighted by the reindeer just casually walking through traffic in Rovaniemi, as if I don’t have my own herd of whitetail deer that are so ordinary I’m like 😑😑😑 (if not 🔪🔪🔪🔪) every time I see them.

Then I think about the desi guy in a fancy car who rolled up to mr61below at a trailhead all “where can I see the wolves and moose and bears?? 😍😍😍” and my poor husband had to try to explain to him that you absolutely do not want to run into ANY of them while hiking, that if he really wants to see them, to go to the centers in Ely.
Like, this? Annoying, but not really that dangerous: lone black bears are usually easily run off with a stern ‘gwon, GIT!’ (And they really do need to be run off, bc if they learn that people aren’t scary, then they become absolute trash goblins, and they ARE smart enough to give zero fucks. If the DNR tries to relocate them, they’ll just follow the scent back to where they know they can get easy meals. Fuck every single person who thinks it’s ‘cute’ to feed them.)
Tumblr media
But this???? 110% terrifying. I flat out called my boss that I will not be coming to work until they leave on their own. She hung around all summer. This is the mama that charged me bc I tried to say ‘gwon, GIT!’ from the doorway, but her cubs went right up the tree next to the garage, she charged me, then stalked the yard for another 4 straight hours.
Tumblr media
The only thing scarier in my life was the time a bull moose charged us while blueberry picking.
