in your opinion do Miles' electrical powers feel more like a continuation of the 'Black superheroes have electricity' trope, or an acknowledgment of that trope while using other story elements to be its own thing?
UPDATE: Look at the reblogs. Somebody who has more superhero knowledge than me answers this question much better than I ever could. Just read the reblog.
I sat for days on end looking at this ask. I genuinely thought you might've sent this to the wrong person but I guess not. I don't know what I'm talking about.
I already knew about the "Black Hero has electric powers trope" but I still looked more into it. The reason this trope is so prevalent, at least for the DC universe, all started with them being unable to use Black Lightening because they didn't have the rights from the creator so they just created a knockoff version of him aka Black Vulcan. The cycle continued with Static Shock as well. It's a whole mess. I link the sources I found at the end.
(Honestly it just seems like after Black Lightening got popular everyone wanted in on his success so more characters who fit the trope were created. But we got Storm out of it so 🤷🏾♀️.)
But to answer your question yes. I feel like Mile's electrical powers are a continuation of the trope. Miles is a variant of Peter Parker. Peter doesn't have electrical powers. I don't think there are many, if any, other Spiderman variants that have electric powers. (Unless someone with more comic knowledge knows something.) So why'd they give Miles electric powers 🤔
Honestly I was thinking of giving my own spidersona electric powers until you sent in this ask. (Because she deals with a lot of tech.) Now that you've brought this up I think I'm gonna go a different route.
I personally don't have a problem with the trope because electric powers are really cool. The characters I've seen with these abilities are usually really strong and powerful too.
I don't have many complaints about the trip in itself but it would be nice to see more variety power wise among black superheroes. But I'd love to hear others thoughts about this trope too.

The first black superheroes on TV were also married. Take that, modern comics!
Not counting Super Stretch and Micro Woman, whom I’ve discussed before. In fact, I went over black superheroes I thought deserved another chance. Just check that list for six good ones, but since that came out I’ve been wanting to list more, like I’ve done with the superheroines I grew up with. However, every time a…
