The Price is Right - Number 27
Welcome to “The Price May Be Right!” I’m counting down My Top 31 Favorite Vincent Price Performances & Appearances! The countdown will cover movies, TV productions, and many more forms of media. Today, we focus on my pick for Number 27…or rather, my picks: Alice Cooper’s “Black Widow,” and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”
Tumblr media
In many ways, these musical achievements – along with Phantom Manor – are arguably some of the oddest and yet best ways Vincent’s legacy has been immortalized. In both cases, Price did not perform the songs themselves, but the combination of the music, the artists, and Price’s involvement have helped to make these immortal. The first of these was “Black Widow,” made by Alice Cooper. The song is a classic in Cooper’s long line of macabre, morbid, and darkly vicious songs that have made him a legend; in its original release, the song itself was preluded by Price – presumably in the role of a scientist – delivering a monologue on the black widow spider, and what one could gleam from its behaviors and how they could compare it to the world of man itself. This monologue was actually essential to the song, as the first lyric of the tune – “These words he speaks are true…” – are intended to be a direct response to the monologue in question. Price not only recorded this monologue vocally, but also appeared onscreen in the 1975 TV special “The Nightmare,” which strung together a number of Cooper’s songs and music videos to create a loose sort of story. In the special, Price appears as a mysterious figure known as “The Spirit of the Nightmare,” who guides Cooper’s character – Steven – through his mad dreams and many fears. Almost ten years later, Vincent would make an arguably even bigger splash in the world of popular music, in a collaboration with Michael Jackson. That collaboration, of course, was arguably Jackson’s masterpiece, “Thriller.” Price delivered a “rap” (really a rhyming monologue) that acted as the closing section of the song, and ended with perhaps the single greatest evil laugh in the history of evil laughs. Funny thing about that infamous cackle: Price actually recorded the dialogue for the rap in just two takes, and if you find and listen to the audio taken at the sessions, after Vincent lets out that absolutely MORTIFYING laugh, there’s actually a few seconds of dead, stunned silence…before Price just giggles and says, “This is great fun!” The moment he does, you can hear the nervousness in the studio people’s voices as they get things shut down. Even with something as simple as the Thriller Rap, Price could truly give a shocking performance. In an interview, Vincent revealed that while he actually never got any great residuals from his contributions to either of these music masterworks, he didn’t mind especially. He found it amusing when projects like this came up, because he knew the reason they happened: “All the pop groups, when they get through their concerts, they go back to their motels, you know…and they turn on their late night television, and there I am! So they want me in their shows, and it’s very nice! No money in it, but it’s a lot of fun!” Considering I would have considered heresy not to include both of these appearances on the countdown somewhere, I think “a lot of fun” is the least of what they offered dear Mr. Price in the long run. The only reason I don’t put them higher is simply because, in the grand scheme of things, there are much more interesting performances to discuss.
Tomorrow, the countdown continues with my pick for Number 26!

COC 01 ⁘ Creature
[Baz] always looks like a gangster first thing in the morning—or a black-and-white movie vampire, with that widow’s peak of his. I’ve wondered whether Baz gets away with being a vampire by looking so much like one.
–Carry On, @rainbowrowell
Fun fact: I did this with my left hand, but I'm more-or-less a rightie!
When I showed a predilection for using my left as a little kid, my mom was worried I'd get in trouble at school for it. So she encouraged me to use my right, instead.
I still prefer to use my left for some things, like holding drinks and my phone, opening jars, etc.
Since I want to develop more fine motor control, I'm going to attempt some of this year's Carry On Countdown with only my left hand! Sorry if you were looking forward to polished pieces from me, 😆 (Also, this one went strangely well, so please don't expect the others to look this good...!)

Tumblr media
“Well? What do you think?”
She twirls around in a black velvet dress, its long sleeves sprinkled with little rhinestones. You have to hand it to her - for a widow in her sixties, your mom still knows how to do glamour.
It’s a pity the same can’t be said for her daughter. You’ve been schlubbing around the house all throughout the holidays in sweatpants, slouch socks, and your oversized college sweatshirt: the perfect “so your fiancé dumped you just before the holidays” cliche.
“You look great, mom. You always do.”
She casts an eye over your attire, your messy hair, your bare face. “You could get dressed and come with me, you know. Might meet someone new? You never know on New Year’s Eve…”
You roll your eyes. “Mom, if you think I’m going to meet the love of my life on New Year’s Eve in Laredo - correction, in Laredo at the community dance - then have I got a bridge to sell you. You’re likely to be one of the hot young things there, going on the usual crowd it attracts.”
She swats at you with her black clutch. “I beg your pardon? I am one of the hot young things.” A final check in the mirror, a final pat to her perfectly-lacquered blow dry.
“All I’m saying is, you never know.”
“And all I’m saying is, this year I’m sticking to my New Year’s resolution: no more men.”
***
“Alright, pop. Have a good time - and no making out with girls down by the river!”
Chucho Peña shakes his head and smiles as he gets out of Javier’s truck, parked outside the community centre. “A pity you won’t join us, mijo,” the older man says, placing his stetson on his head. “You could do with the company.”
Javier shakes his head. “I’m fine, pop. You go and enjoy yourself. You know I don’t like New Year’s, anyway.”
He doesn’t. He never really did. As a kid he liked watching the countdown on TV with his parents and extended family, as a teen the last day of the year became a competition to find someone to make out with as the clock struck midnight. (Javi always excelled.)
But there was always something uncomfortable about the event, something that preyed on the melancholy aspects of his character. Maybe it was the forced celebrations, or the strangeness of marking the passing of time, or the pressure to be someone new - someone better - in the new year ahead.
He’d been trying to be someone new for years, now. He never succeeded.
Back at the ranch, he flips idly through the TV channels and finds nothing to watch. A rumble in his tummy has him peering into the cold light of the refrigerator, confronted with a few cold cuts, cheese, and a half-eaten jar of pickles that’s been there forever. A solitary bottle of beer lurks on the refrigerator door.
“Fuck this.”
He grabs his jacket and keys and heads for his truck.
***
The cashier rings up your two bottles of wine and places them in a plastic carrier bag. They’re young, probably not much older than sixteen, and their New Year’s Eve shift at the convenience store clearly isn’t setting their world alight.
“Havin’ a party, huh,” they mumble as they hand you the bag.
“Oh yeah,” you respond in a tone dripping with sarcasm, unable to keep your sass-mouth in check. “I’m having a huge party, with my two bottles of cheap Californian white.”
“Just makin’ conversation, lady. Y’all have a good night at your wine party, or whatever.”
You huff as you shove the plastic bag on the passenger seat and hop into your car, still rolling your eyes in misplaced frustration at the young cashier. You knew you were in the wrong, taking your heartbreak and loneliness out on a spotty kid working minimum wage. For a moment, you consider driving to a bar, seeking some sort of solace in the company of strangers.
But every bar in town would be celebrating, you remind yourself. The last thing you want is to ring in the new year being felt up by someone’s greasy uncle in an ill-fitting denim shirt and bolo tie, reeking of cheap whiskey.
In that moment, the yellow glow emanating from the signage over the branch of Danny’s Restaurant, across the street, catches your eye like a beacon.
Perfect.
***
Javier’s truck pulls into the parking lot of the convenience store, pausing to let a woman driving a beat-up compact pass on her way out. He’s got his heart set on a half-pounder and fries from Danny’s - extra pickles, extra mayo - but wants to pick up some beers and cigarettes first, to keep him going for the rest of the night.
The cashier rings up his six-pack and Marlboros, sighing as they place them in a bag. “Havin’ a party, huh,” the kid mutters, barely making eye contact with their customer.
“Pretty mean party, just a six-pack and a box of smokes,” Javier responds.
The kid stares up at him. “Whatever. Smokin’s bad for you, anyway.”
Javier wheels around as he exits the store. “I know. Don’t care. Quitting’s my New Year’s resolution so I gotta make the most of them tonight.”
***
“So that’s a Danny’s Special, hold the pickles, extra lettuce, and a Diet Coke?”
You nod up at the waitress and hand her the menu with a smile. You catch a glimpse of your reflection in the window of the restaurant, and for a moment you don’t recognise the woman you see.
When did you get so old, you wonder? Where did you - or at least, the you that used to be - go?
Still, at least you’d put on some 501s, a fresh white scoop neck top, and a long-line cardigan for your first venture outside your family home in several days. Sure, it might just be for a trip to the convenience store and Danny’s, but even you had standards.
The waitress returns with your drink and the usual complimentary tray of chips and salsa. The restaurant is probably a little quieter than usual for this time of the evening: a couple of families in booths here and there, a few lone diners at the counter. As you nibble idly on the chips, you half-notice a dark-haired man coming through the door a little after you, placing his order quickly at the counter before he’s even been seated.
It was just what you were after: no countdowns, no forced merriment, no crowds, but just enough hum and background noise to break up the silence that otherwise awaited you.
“One Danny’s special.”
You thank the waitress and sigh with anticipation as you lift your burger, take your first bite, and find your mouth filled with the overpowering taste of pickles.
***
“Yes, ma’am?”
“Uh, I think my order got mixed up - I asked for no pickles, and this burger has…”
You become aware of the dark-haired man signalling to another staff member behind the counter, pointing at his burger in much the same way as you.
There’s something familiar about him - about his body language, his profile, the way he carries himself.
And then it hits you.
“Javi?”
***
How long has it been? Twenty years? Twenty-five?
No matter the number, when the shock of recognition has the power to jolt you back through time like this. Back to another New Year’s Eve, someone’s shitty house party, most of your senior year classmates wasted on cheap beer and tequila. Still an hour or two before midnight and already the party has split into two camps: the lovers, making out on every conceivable surface, and the fighters, yelling and screeching and walking off.
And then there were those who combined both roles, whose loving felt a lot like fighting and vice versa.
Like Lorraine and Javi.
In your mind's eye, you're back in the upstairs hallway of that house, wearing your new flared jeans and ditsy print blouse and picking your way over classmates and half-drunk plastic cups of beer as you seek out the bathroom.
A couple is rowing in one of the bedrooms, the door ajar enough for you to be able to peek in.
You know you shouldn’t, but…
“You’re such a dick, Javi! You know what you did!”
Ah. Lorraine and Javi. Lovers and fighters.
“You stand there and accuse me, Lorraine, but where were you at the time?”
Lorraine tosses her perfect blonde hair indignantly.
“I’m not even going to dignify that with an answer. Fuck you, Javier.”
She doesn’t even notice you as she flounces out of the room. Same as it ever was. You’d always had a tendency to blend into the background.
Javi notices you, though. “Did you enjoy the show?”
You step around the door and look in at him nervously. “I didn’t mean to overhear, but you guys were pretty loud…”
He’s got his back to you as he sits on the side of the bed, impossibly broad in his tight, striped shirt.
You wander into the room and closer to him, emboldened by a couple of weak beers. “Are you okay?”
His dark eyes look into yours in surprise, as if he’s unused to being asked the question.
“I guess… it’s just - ah, fuck it. She seems to think I’m always cheating on her - and I’m not, I swear - but won’t explain why she’s gotta spend so much time ‘revising’ with other guys.”
“Maybe she’s just helping them prepare for the SATs?”
He looks at you, and you notice the sadness in his eyes. “Maybe. I dunno. She shouldn’t go off on me about this stuff, though.” He takes a swig from a bottle of beer and exhales. “Fuckin’ hate New Year’s.”
“Me too.”
He huffs a laugh and smiles at you. “I’m in good company, then.”
You see in the new year sitting side by side on the back porch, sharing a small bottle of cheap bourbon and swapping stories about your plans for the future, your hopes and dreams.
Javier Peña tells you he’s going to change the world.
And then school starts again, and Lorraine and Javi make up, and that’s the last time you talk to him other than a mumbled “Hi” in the hallway now and again.
Until tonight.
***
He slides into the seat opposite you and shakes his head with a smile. “All these years, and it took a mix-up about pickles to bring us back together again.”
You shrug, taking in the man he had become: handsome, charming, cool, even, but with the same lingering sadness haunting those beautiful eyes.
“Of all the family restaurants in all of Texas,” you offer.
“You had to walk into mine,” he responds, taking the bait. “Or into this branch of Danny’s, at least.”
You tilt your head to look at him. “What’s a hero doing alone on New Year’s Eve, anyway?”
He rolls his eyes. “Not a hero. And don’t you remember? I don’t like New Year’s. Fuckin’ hate it, in fact. Told you that, all those years ago.”
“You did, didn’t you?”
The waitress returns carrying your two freshly-prepared, correct orders and a large helping of apologies. “We’ll be sure to bring you over some more chips, too, and the drinks are on the house.”
Javier clinks his glass off yours. “Maybe this year is looking up already. What about you, anyway - what brings you back home?”
“My fiancé dumped me four days before Christmas,” you explain, dipping a French fry into a pot of chipotle mayo. “So what else is a girl to do but run home to mama, legal career or no legal career?”
“Fuck, that’s rough.” Javier seems genuinely sympathetic. He takes a bite of his burger and chews it thoughtfully. “So no New Year’s parties for you either, huh?”
You shake your head. “I would rather be dipped in boiling oil.”
He laughs, revealing the crinkles around his eyes that only serve to make him even more handsome as he enters middle age. Why do these little signs of ageing always look good on men, you wonder, but make a woman feel like she’s failed?
“Would you be opposed to a party for two?” he asks quietly. “Theme is: Fuck New Year’s.”
You grin. “Just like old times. Count me in.”
***
You hear the bells of San Agustín ringing in the new year from the back porch of your mother’s house. Javier clinks his whiskey tumbler off your glass of white wine.
“A happy fuck new year’s to you.”
“And a happy fuck new year’s to you, too. You got any resolutions, Javi?”
He takes a long, satisfying drag on his cigarette before handing it to you. “Quit smoking. You?”
“No more men. Think you’ll stick to it?”
He raises an eyebrow at your resolution and smiles as he looks out into the night. “We’ll see. Hearing good things about those nicotine patches.” And then those penetrating, sad eyes are on you. “What about you? Think you’ll stick to your resolution?”
You meet his gaze and give him a knowing smile. “We’ll see. Might find someone worth breaking it for.”

Get to Know Me - Sims Edition
I was tagged by several people (thank you!), so I decided to get off my ass for once and answer this 😆
What’s your favorite Sims death? I think the mummy's curse one! There's just something about that ominous vignette during the countdown days, only for the sim to dissolve into dust at the end 😩👌
Alpha CC or Maxis Match? Both! Maxis Match for clothing, Alpha for hair.
Do you cheat your sims weight? Nope! I leave them at whatever weight they happen to be, unless they want to learn/practice the Athletic skill. I do cheat to give them more muscle tone if they're super muscular already, though; EA really should've made that slider move along the muscle mass one :/
Do you move objects? Oh yes. I can't imagine decorating without it.
Favorite Mod? Nraas Master Controller my beloved 💖 Can't forget BrntWaffles's lighting mods, they make the game look so beautiful that sometimes I like to just leave it on 2x while watching the sunset over the sea.
First Expansion/Game Pack/Stuff Pack? The first EP I got was World Adventures and it's still my favorite. The first and only SP I have is HELS, along with bits and pieces from the others.
Do you pronounce live mode like aLIVE or LIVing? The latter, though this question tripped me up the first time I saw it 😅
Who’s your favorite sim that you’ve made? Ohh that's a tough one. Fergus Vane is definitely among my favorites, he was a Johnny Bravo knockoff who eventually got married and I swear that he and his wife could NOT keep their hands off each other 😆 First is him making friends at uni, second is him with his wife.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Have you made a simself? Oh yeah, when I got the game and was trying to figure out how to play. Didn't last long until I started making serial black widows, lol.
Which is your favorite EA hair color? That platinum blonde looks so tacky that I can't help but love it.
Favorite EA hair? I think EA struck gold with: Loose Curl, Dramatic Ponytail, La Dolce Vita Updo, Chorus Girl Curl, Pin-up Pretty, Skinny Dreads, Wavy Bob, Elegance Style, and Wild Fire.
Favorite life stage? Young Adult, because it has the most things available.
Are you a builder or are you in it for the gameplay? Ohh it depends. I go through phases when I'm not interested in gameplay at all, mostly when I set up a savefile for the first time. But now I've been more into gameplay for a few months.
Are you a CC creator? Yeah, mostly with CAS items and minor annoyance fixes.
Do you have any Simblr friends or a Sim Squad? I have a lot of simblr mutuals where I feel like a nosy person sometimes poking their head above the neighbor's fence to see what's going on 😆
Do you have any sims merch? / A Youtube for sims? Nope.
How has your “Sims style” changed throughout your years of playing? I give my concrete boxes a few more decorative elements now 😅 For once, I stopped playing serial killers (mostly to avoid the NPC pudding spam that ensues), and am making an effort to not micromanage sims as much and to fulfill their wishes instead of ending up with mostly level 10 chefs and gardeners all the time.
Who’s your favorite CC creator? Oh man do I have to name someone?? SimplexSims, @aroundthesims, Mutske, @simtanico, @simaddix, @twinsimming, @bioniczombie, @martassimsbookcc, @simbouquet, @plumdrops, @ifcasims, @sim-songs, @deniisu-sims, @bellakenobi, @brntwaffles, @omedapixel, @wanderingsimsfinds, @simlicious, TheSweetSimmer and on and on.
How long have you had Simblr? 2016! Sometimes I can't believe it's been so long.
How do you edit your pictures? I have a few customized Gshade presets, and only convert gameplay screenshots to JPG. For CC previews, I may change the background color and will combine several previews into one image (and I occasionally correct small issues like unsightly clipping due to the poses).
What expansion/ gamepack is your favorite? World Adventures is #1, followed by Seasons and prooobably Supernatural.
Oof we're at the end! Thank you for tagging me and for reading, and I tag ✨anyone who wants to do this✨!

Staying in tonight? Want some festive viewing? I recommend grisly low-budget slasher flick New Year’s Evil (1980). Tagline: “Don’t dare make new year’s resolutions … unless you plan to live!” In Los Angeles, glamorous hardboiled celebrity DJ and television’s first lady of rock’n’roll Blaze Sullivan (Roz Kelly) is hosting “Hollywood Hotline”, a live televised coast-to-coast New Year’s Eve countdown. Viewers are encouraged to phone in to vote for their favourite New Wave song of the year - but one of the callers is a misogynistic serial killer calling himself “Evil”, who threatens to murder a “naughty girl” as each time zone hits midnight – culminating with Blaze herself! What distinguishes New Year’s Evil is its focus on the punk subculture. Considering it was filmed in LA in 1980, the mind boggles at the actual bands the filmmakers could have feasibly utilized for the musical sequences: X, The Screamers, the Germs, the Zeros, The Weirdos! The presence of any of these would make New Year’s Evil a valuable time capsule. But no – we see only two appalling ersatz punk bands (nonentities Shadow and Made in Japan), and at tedious length. The film’s received wisdom about how punk rockers behave (they are troublemakers with piercings and Mohawks who mosh and stick their tongues out a lot) is unintentionally hilarious. New Year’s Evil also fails to clarify why hardened young hardcore punk fans are so rabidly enthusiastic about sequin-clad middle-aged Blaze. Is it because she exhorts things like “It’s time to spin out and boil your hair!” and “drop a ‘lude and relax, huh?” while wielding a feather boa? Which brings us to Roz Kelly. In her brief heyday, she was best known for portraying Pinky Tuscadero, Fonzie’s tough cookie girlfriend in seventies sitcom Happy Days. Her screen presence was certainly … um … distinctive. Whether playing Pinky, Anthony Franciosa’s brassy secretary Flaps (yes – Flaps!) in Curse of the Black Widow (1977), cavorting in Paul Lynde’s infamous 1976 Halloween special or indeed here as Blaze, Kelly is consistently abrasive, brittle and borderline hostile. Her bizarre acting choices are perhaps the scariest aspect of New Year’s Evil! Watch it free on YouTube.

"Like the things that once filled our world with beauty, the dreams we had for the future died."
TW1ST: 180° is the second extended play by South Korean girl group, TWIST. The album was released on May 5, 2017, through JYL Records. Consisting of nine songs, including the three singles, “Come Back Home”, “Triangle”, and “Overdose”. Musically, the album spans between R&B, hip hop, EDM, metal, and dance-pop. The group earned the title ‘self-produce’ group as all members have taken the lead in the album production. “Come Back Home” was written and composed by Chaeyoung and Hyerim, whereas “Overdose” was composed by Sohye and written by Hyerim. “Triangle” is the first track that contains credits from all the members, in which the live arrangement consisting of an electric guitar and violins were composed by Sohye and Chaeyoung, while the lyrics were written by Mina and Hyerim.
As a sequel to their first eponymous extended play, TW1ST, 180° was a commercial success. The album debuted atop the Gaon Albums Chart, with over 400,000 copies sold in the first week, with Twist breaking their own record for having the highest girl group first week album sales, which was previously held by the predecessor album known as TW1ST. By the end of 2017, 180° had sold over 700,000 copies, making Twist hold the top two selling girl group albums of the year.
The lead single, “Come Back Home”, debuted atop the Gaon Digital Chart with other 567,888 digital units sold in the first week of release. The song remained atop the chart for four consecutive weeks. The second single, “Overdose”, debuted at number two on the Gaon Digital Chart with 309,362 digital units sold. In the first week of June 2017, “Overdose” rose to the summit of the chart with a huge increase in sales after the group held a one-time performance at the Apollo Theater in New York City, leading the performance to gain popularity. “Overdose” topped the Gaon Digital Chart for seven consecutive weeks. Due to the sudden traction from the viral performance, “Overdose” peaked at number 10 on the US Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100. The third single, “Triangle” peaked at number 80 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week of September 3, 2017.
For the album’s release, a special “TWIST Comeback Show”, hosted by a collaboration of Mnet and MTV, was broadcast live worldwide on May 6, 2017. The show consisted of performances from the following albums: TW1ST and 180°.
Promotions for the album focused primarily on South Korea and the United States. Twist were apart of the following lineups:
Dream Concert
SBS Super Concert
Incheon Korean Music Wave
American Music Awards
KCON NY
Tumblr media
TRACKLIST:

ERA HIGHLIGHTS:
It was difficult to follow up to the release of TW1ST, the general public counted them out, but Twist came back FIGHTING!
Come Back Home topped all the real time charts, earning 50 perfect-all-kills.
Overdose was the REAL hit of the album! It became bigger than Come Back Home and earned 73 perfect-all-kills.
Overdose debuted in the Bubbling Under on Billboard at number 10!
Sohye had a vengeance. After a winter of taking violin, guitar, and writing lessons, she composed Overdose as her first project. She then enlisted Hyerim to help her with the lyrical material of the song. 2HYE lives on!
Mina joined the cast of Hello Counselor, to give advice to individuals!
As a gift for such a successful first half of 2017, Twist went on vacation to Malaysia!
To get to know the members more, Chaeyoung began her own radio show; Chae’s Clubhouse, where the Twist members and other idols are interviewed every week.
Performance Highlights (Iconic Moments / Popular Performances):
On 050417, the official comeback stages for Come Back Home and Overdose took place at Mnet Countdown. The stage for Come Back Home was rather futuristic, inspired by The Matrix and TLC’s ‘No Scrubs’. Each member had a white monochrome and colorful latex outfit suited for them, as they would dance in unison. The Overdose set in comparison was rather dark, sleek, and simplistic with white greek statues surrounding the girls. The beginning of the performances shows 20 backup dancers in the form of a choir as they surround Twist. Chaeyoung and Hyerim are directing the orchestra before the song begins.
On 050717 at SBS Inkigayo, Twist descended onto the stage from the ceiling via a small shaft and broke the glass wall that is used as an entrance to their performance of Overdose. Notable moments include Sohye opening up the performance with an electric guitar solo which transitions into Hyerim’s opening verse, Chaeyoung and Hyerim’s duo rap at the bridge, and Mina’s high note before the bridge.
At The 2017 Mnet Asian Music Awards, Twist performed a symphony orchestra version of Overdose, which included 100 members and backup dancers on stage performing various string instruments of the melody. At the opening of the symphony orchestra segment, Mina has an operatic vocal solo stage and is followed by Sohye’s electric guitar solo segment. The girls are seen rising onto the stage in a ring of blue fire, which intensifies with every movement of the symphony behind them. Notable moments include a dance break before the bridge, Chaeyoung and Hyerim’s duo rap, Hyerim’s signature hand movement that commands the audience from each direction to sing or scream louder, and a solo Hyerim dance stage. The performance received critical acclaim and is listed as one of the most iconic MAMA stages.
At The 2017 Melon Music Awards, Twist performed a rock version of Triangle with an orchestra live band to enhance the live instrumental of the song. The girls are seen descending onto the stage as angels with fluffy white wings in a ring of pure white light (in contrast to the ring of blue fire they stood in at MAMA for Overdose). Notable moments include Sohye’s violin solo, Hyerim’s runway walk before her bridge (insp @ 3:01 here), Chaeyoung’s screamo rap, Hyerim’s high note at the end (4:30 here), and Mina leading a metal-insp dance break.

Turn Around (Three Times Before Lying Down) by kellifer_fic
Everyone knows that Tony Stark is a playboy, billionaire philanthropist, but what they don’t know is that he’s also a werewolf. When a government agency known as SHIELD finds out, they use this information to force Tony’s hand and bring him into a new elite lycan field team, codename The Avengers Initiative.
Suddenly Tony finds himself playing host to a bunch of lycans, a misplaced God of Thunder and an experimental supersoldier that isn’t as dead as everyone assumed. Can his week get any worse?

Countdown by iL0Vsuperman
In a world where people use timer implants to help find their soulmates, you would think finding your soulmate and love would be easy.
But…
Steve had a soul implant that was zeroed out, meaning he did not have a countdown to meet a soulmate. Steve easily reasoned he did not have a soulmate because he had bad genes, a common belief of his era. Despite this, he prayed for his implant to reset and to meet the person who would accept him for all he is.
Tony created a program for soulmates to find each other faster just so he could meet his soulmate before he turned 40. But, his soulmate never used the program, and it made Tony bitter and eventually begin to hate his mate.
Bucky had a zeroed out implant like Steve and, like Steve, prayed for his implant to reset. His prayers were answered, however, it was years later, when he was no longer his own person, when he was no longer Bucky, just, the Winter Soldier. He was not allowed to own anything, not even his own body, nonetheless a soulmate.
Natasha received the soul implant when she was indoctrinated into the Black Widow Program and, with it, was given her first mission to prove her loyalty: kill her soulmate.
One Thing Leads to Another by missbecky
Following the events in Avengers Tower on Christmas Eve, Steve resolves to ask Tony what he meant by calling him Captain Handsome. It's a simple question, and it should be a simple answer. He just never thought that it would lead him to some surprising revelations about the truth of his feelings for Tony.
I, for You by Renai_chan

mock me with praise by nanasekei
“You should rest. I… I have a quite comfortable couch, you know.”
Steve widened his eyes. “No,” he replied harshly, so blunt that Stark seemed taken aback, which somehow prompted him to add, a little lighter, “There’s no need.”
“You can’t sleep on the floor, darling,” Stark argued. The nickname, as always, fueled fire in Steve’s chest, and he wanted to run away and also to fight Stark at the same time. “Come on. I owe you.”
-
After waking up in a frenzy from a nightmare, Steve ends up locking himself out of his apartment. His hallway neighbor offers some help.
If Only by FestiveFerret
Steve wasn't gay. He wasn't. He'd know that about himself. He had no problem whatsoever with men who were attracted to men - he was dating one of them - but it wasn't him.
Touch and Go by FestiveFerret
In his defense, Tony thought Steve would back down.

Written for day 31 of the Bishlova December Fanfic Writing Challenge. Prompt: Fireworks Word Count: 100

Hearing the countdown to the New Year begin on the TV, Kate shifted position on the couch and gently cupped Yelena’s face.  The sound of the fireworks filled the room as Kate leaned forward and kissed Yelena slowly, trying to convey her love.
“Happy New Year, Yelena,” Kate smiled, gently caressing Yelena’s face with her thumb.
“Happy New Year, Kate,” Yelena replied, moving her hand to Kate’s and intertwining their fingers.  “This year, I want to spend more time with you.  I want to travel with you.  Will you be the Hawkeye to my Black Widow?”
“Always.  You and me.”

Spider-man: The Animated Series, 103 (Feb. 11, 1995) - “Return of the Spider Slayers”
The Breakdown
Spider-man is out for some light web-swinging when he’s suddenly attacked by the Black Widow Spider Slayer, which is particularly odd since it was destroyed last episode.  Alas, Alistair Smythe has built a new "Widow" to avenge his father, in addition to a second Spider-robot modeled after a Tarantula (I do appreciate variation on a theme).  The two Spider Slayers quickly overpower and apprehend Spidey, and transport him back to Smythe’s lab.  J. Jonah Jameson is summoned to witness Spider-man’s final defeat, but Smythe turns on him too, and straps a bomb to both men's wrists with a one-hour countdown!  Since there’s NO POSSIBLE way Spider-man could cause any problems with so little time left, Alistair sets the two men free (bomb still attached of course), but not before explaining that he’s sending his Spider-Robots to kill Flash Thompson, Eddie Brock, and Norman Osborn (he blames all these guys for his father’s death).
With only an hour to kill before he explodes, Spider-man promptly gets to work tracking down the anti-spidey-bots, saving both Flash and Eddie, in addition to cutting Jonah free from their mutual-wrist-bomb (courtesy of the Black Widow's standard issue mandible lasers).  Meanwhile Smythe has just sent a third Slayer (shaped like a Scorpion this time, so you know it's BADASS) to Kill Norman Osborn, only for it to be subsequently joined by the other two robots, so they can all combine into one MEGA-Spider-Slayer (which is obviously totally rad).  Since bigger is unquestionably badder, Spider-man finally takes a moment to remove the bomb from his wrist so he can use it to blow up the Tri-Slayer once and for all.
Epilogue – Wilson Fisk (who became Smythe’s evil benefactor in exchange for Spider-man’s death) is pretty choked that Smythe failed, and reminds the young scientist/inventor that he will never be free until the wall-crawler is dead.  Meanwhile Peter Parker must finally relent to Aunt May’s wishes and meet up with their neighbour’s niece, Mary Jane, for a blind date.  Peter is dreading the meeting until he greets MJ at the door, where he discovers she’s a total hottie! What a relief, and not-at-all shallow!
The Verdict
This entire episode is basically one massive fight, with most of the secondary storylines merely sprinkled in to remind the audience that they’re still a thing.  Eddie Brock is still mad at Spider-man, Norman Osborn is still a shifty dude, Jonah is still a crusty fuck, Wilson Fisk is still busy Kingpin-ing all of his crime.  I’m not suggesting any of this is a failing, ‘Return of the Spider Slayers’ is still pretty fun and accomplishes what it sets out to do; there’s just not much to it, and that’s perfectly fine.
3 stars (out of 5)
Additional Observations.
Alistair Smythe is given a lab at the top level of Wilson Fisk’s tower, which has a rather conspicuous giant door to accommodate the slayer-robots.  Admittedly it’s probably ideal as a headquarters for evil scheming, but I have to wonder what all the citizens below think about the building that regularly dispatches killer robots through the secret draw-bridge-style-door.
Wouldn’t three independent Spider-Slayers be more of a threat?  I realize that as a kid I thought this was the coolest thing ever, but even back then I recall thinking that combining all the robots into one would just make a bigger and slower target.  Keep in mind that each of the Slayers are independently capable of flight, and Spidey only had the one bomb.
I will NOT, however, bother to question why the bots are all designed to look like arachnids (instead of just a drone or even just quadruped). Sometimes aesthetic awesomeness is reason enough. Even a supervillain needs to express their artistic voice.
Pete figures out a science-y way to freeze and shatter the metal bracelet welded to the bomb. Narrative convenience aside, I always appreciate it when the writers remember to show that his intelligence and education are as vital to him as his powers.
Peter Parker, Player: Three episodes in and Pete is already juggling Felicia Hardy AND Mary-Jane Watson! I guess when you keep ditching your dates to fight supervillains you need to keep your options open.

ASK GAME
@theluckydimecaper tagged me in this so:
1. 3 ships: Out of character for me, they've been pretty straight recently (or rather m/f because I don't think any of them are straight): Mulder/Scully and Steed/Peel. Also Yaz/13th Doctor
2. first ever ship: I think it was Black Widow & Maria Hill, from Marvel
3. last song: En Ledig Dag (I'm nothing if not predictable)
4. last movie: I went to a Mamma Mia sing-along last Friday
5. currently reading: Savage Beauty: The Life of Edna St. Vincent Millay by Nancy Milford
6. currently watching: At this exact moment, a years-old episode of 8 Out of 10 Cats does Countdown (Susie Dent my beloved)
7. currently consuming: Water. I need to buy more snacks.
8. currently craving: Ice cream. Specifically a type with cookie/oreo/brownie/etc. chunks in
9 people to tag (I only have 4. ignore that): don't feel pressured to do it at all! It's all in good fun

The Price May Be Right - Number 5
Welcome to “The Price May Be Right!” I’ve been counting down My Top 31 Favorite Vincent Price Performances & Appearances! The countdown will cover movies, TV productions, and many more forms of media. We’ve reached the Top 5 for the countdown! Today we focus on Number 5: Mr. Trumbull, from Comedy of Terrors.
Tumblr media
There’s a difference between your favorite performance for an actor and your favorite actor’s movie. To give you a better understanding of what I mean by this, here’s an example: my favorite Ian McKellen performance/character is Gandalf from the Lord of the Rings. However, my favorite Ian McKellen movie – meaning a film in which McKellen is really the driving character of the story – would be either the televised version of The Scottish Play in which he starred, or the theatrically-released film “Gods and Monsters.” I say this because my fifth and fourth place picks for this countdown are my two favorite Vincent Price movies…but, as you can guess from the fact there are three roles above them, they are not necessarily my favorite Vincent Price characters or performances. The first of those two films to cover is one of my all-time favorite comedy movies, “Comedy of Terrors,” from 1963. This movie was made by AIP, the same company behind the Corman-Poe Cycle of films. In fact, it was made at the same time a couple of those movies were being constructed. Indeed, with its aesthetic and tone, it almost feels like one of those movies, barring the complete lack of connection to Edgar Allan Poe (not that it would stop anyone from advertising “Witchfinder General” as a Poe movie later, but that’s another story). Much like “The Raven,” the movie is a horror homage and spoof, only “Terrors” is actually much darker and more adult in tone than “The Raven” was. It also features a lot of the same cast: Vincent is here, of course, along with Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff. They are joined by Basil Rathbone as a little extra tricky treat. The plot focuses on Price and Lorre’s characters: Mr. Waldo Trumbull, the perpetually drunk and thoroughly crooked head of an undertaking business, and his blundering henchman, an inept coffinmaker and former bank robber called Mr. Felix Gillie. Trumbull is a totally awful so-and-so: he is verbally abusive to his (admittedly rather henpecking) wife, constantly schemes to poison his father-in-law for seemingly no other reason than the old man annoys him, and spends almost everything the business earns on drink. (For the record, the father-in-law is played by Karloff.) Every year, in order to pay the rent they owe their landlord, Trumbull and Gillie ride out to some rich old person who lives in or around their city. Gillie helps Trumbull break into the house, and upon entry, Trumbull suffocates the one in charge of the home with a pillow, and makes it seem like they died of natural causes. This allows them to get enough money to pay off the annual rent. One year, when one of these wicked schemes goes awry, thus putting them in danger of eviction, the pair decide to go after their landlord – Mr. Black, played by Rathbone – but what seems like the perfect crime soon turns into a wild nightmare for all parties involved. While the film has a lot of dark moments and themes, it is COMPLETELY played up for laughs, and every single actor delivers perhaps one of the finest performances of their career. Vincent and Lorre, however, are easily at their finest here. This may actually be my favorite of Lorre’s performances, in particular, which is saying quite a lot, and it’s easily one of my favorites for Vincent. Although Mr. Trumbull is a completely horrible and appalling creature, Price somehow manages to make him humorous and enjoyable. There’s such a fine string of irony to the character, as he is easily the most awful person in the story, yet he seems to be totally unaware of just how bad he, himself, is. For example, in one scene, Trumbull discovers that the widow of his most recent victim – now a client of his – has run away to America without paying anything for her husband’s funeral, absconding with all of the family fortune. Realizing he’s been swindled, he looks heavenward and mournfully intones, “Is there no morality left in this world?” I think that sums up the character better than anything else I could say. Honestly, I’d love to see this movie turned into a stage play, sometime. It feels like it could possibly make a great one…but finding a team to match, or even come close, to the chemistry between Price and Lorre, and the charm each actor has, would be next to impossible. We are getting closer to the end, comrades. Tomorrow, the countdown continues with Number 4!
